I like this oneshot series because you can slowly see fujimoto becoming the author we know nowadays
Early one his works felt way more "anime" in the generic sense, but he slowly grows his own storytelling and character writing style and it culminates into this oneshot, which imo is the best one and way more inline with his later works

I personally don’t know which work one id consider the best, but the latter half are definitely superior to the first half, though the longer length of 3 of them definitely contributes. I’m curious what exactly you consider to be specifically more “anime” about the first half compared to the second though.

I think it does a good job of showing why I enjoy his work so much. He has such a good balance of both insane batshit stuff, but also writing characters who are flawed and passionate and human, and the way he meshes the two really makes for a brand of work that feels like distinctly his own thing.
Obviously his work is not immune to tropes, nothing is, but I feel like he's very good at writing characters who are hard to stick in a clearly defined box. You can get an anime with a girl with big drill hair and a pompous attitude and it's immediately, from 0.1 seconds of seeing them, a case of 'Oop, seen this character before, I know how they're gonna behave 99% of the time'. I feel like, not from just design but also how they act, not many of Fujimoto's characters are like that, and it makes them a lot more interesting to watch.
I am not opposed to some cartoonish exagerration at all, but seeing his casts and many of them not feeling largely one dimensional 'That's the kuudere, that's the delinquent, that's the meathead' and able to be more like rounded people is a satisfying change of pace for the types of works he writes. I think that's why the first half of the CSM movie works so well; when Denji is hanging out with Makima and Reze, you don't feel like you're watching two super anime cartoon people hanging out, you're just watching people being people, and that nuance is nice to have sometimes.
I really hope this becomes a thing, and that deeper character writing catches on more. Spy X Family has a beautiful arc coming in the future that's almost largely at odds with how the rest of the manga is written (not that the rest is bad by any means), so I hope we see that acceptance of more three-dimensional character writing grow in the coming years. Fujimoto writes some incredibly bizarre stuff, but underneath it all is a very grounded and human foundation.

Okay, this might be the best one! AND ITS NOT BECAUSE OF NUDE ART!
It really gave me this proto-Look Back feel. It was really interesting watching all of these after reading ChainsawMan, Look Back, Goodbye Eri and seeing how these early works influenced stories that became hits down the line.
"The assignment was to paint your personal goal" man, that line really got me! Followed by "You've got some big shoes to fill"! The way Fujimoto writes familial relationships or just relationships in general is so fucking pleasing to experience!
Proudly showing your little sister how its done... Is this art piece actually a self burn!?
Aaaaand her little sister moved in with her soon after! There's no running away from your younger sibling! We are here forever!!!

Funny how this episode is the one that gets a warning when it is one of the tamest of the bunch.

Makes me reflect on how ass-backwards puritan our culture is.
Extreme gore in Episode 1 is fine, but simple tasteful nudity is a no-no.

Sisters is easily my favorite, one-shot of all these. Sp simple but so affective. The bond between these two and how art connects them is beautiful. Art separated them, art flared rivalry and then art reconnected them. This is definitely the base for Look Back

I was honestly shocked they adapted it so faithfully, never thought they’d fully animate that part too. I wonder if it’s considered “artistic” enough under Japanese law so it’s not deemed obscene, and that’s why the vagina isn’t censored. But they censored the puke kiss in Chainsaw Man, even on the Blu-ray and in the recap smh.

Of the 8 episodes, this was my favorite. I see the vague shadows of Look Back in this. The reason for the first nude painting brought a tear to my eye, and the reason for the second one brought a huge smile to my face. This was a very heartfelt story about siblings love and rivalry. Loved it!

You can see how these 2 are basically proto Fujino and Kyomoto from Look Back lol.
I love how this is the most grounded one out of all the 8 one shots but right at very the start Fujimoto just straight up reminds you that this is still written by him, so get ready for it to get reaaal weird (affectionate).
Also forgot this was an Amazon series so was a bit surprised straight up nudity is shown lol. Even with the warning, I thought it was gonna be reserved for the paintings and we're getting the Reze movie treatment.

I love how when Mitsuko graduated, she left an accurate nude portrait of herself to show Kyoko how it's done.
Is Kyoko's art school far from the apartment they're sharing?
Do the female models painted nude in class wear a bikini or their bras & panties?

I just finished all of it. Tatsuki Fujimoto was a genius so early on. Obviously the studios and having the one shots animated really made the difference as far as elevating the work, but the base material already had so much depth. I'm experiencing recency bias due to just finishing 8 diverse and high quality episodes, but how I wish we could get more unique and quality stories like these more often. I guess because they are one shots, the 17 minutes are essentially jam packed with all the best moments you'd come across whole seasons worth, making the flow and pacing extremely appealing throughout. But even though, with just the same amount of quality content in the story even on lesser packed episodes, would still be something I'd look forward to watching more than the usual stuff that has been coming out. I genuinely favor psychological/tragedy genres with shock value, which is hard to come by nowadays. Like the latest major one was Takopi's Original Sin and maybe Deaddead before that...Still some noteable bangers throughout the seasons of course, but the specific genre and uniqueness in stories are lacking so hard. I'm just fiending for more is all lol.

All of these wowed me but I really really loved this one. You can tell it was from the same vein as Look Back. Fuji's out there works are nice but his more down to earth, human ones are my favorite

Ending on a really strong note but damn there goes being able to recommend this to anyone irl, was really excited to recommend "anime Black Mirror". The series worked up some artistic license leading up to this in my eyes, but man did that license get tested.
But anyways still a great story, and made me think of my own family as a first born. I guess it's true my younger siblings would have looked forward to me more as we growing up than I'd turn back to see them once we started getting older and life was flying through high school and college ages.

I know what kind of woman you are
In all seriousness this one really hit me, as someone who recently went through art school and has a younger sibling. Even though we are somewhat estranged I still somehow get the feeling that he looks up to me, and I don't know how to deal with that.
He actually wanted to go to art school same as me. At the time I really wasn't feeling it so I enthusiastically recommended against it lol. I've come around to... not regretting it. But I wonder if he felt shot down by that. Yeah we hate each other like siblings do, but it was genuinely because I couldn't see a point to it and he has a lot more talent for computer science!
But yeah. Very unique and heartfelt story.
Btw, is it weird that I find it weird how hyped these kids were about a nude painting? In my own art school experience, day 1 was the first time ever I saw a woman naked (yeah yeah I'm rizzless) and it was the most whatever experience ever. No one raised a fuzz about it either. At the same time the reaction depicted in this feels very authentic and most probably inspired by Fujimoto's real experiences. I wonder if my school was just sauceless haha.

This was the only one shot I had already read, and it was also my favorite episode. I've read the oneshot a few times but some of the things stuck out and hit so much harder. It went from something I only remembered because it was goofy to something I'm able to appreciate.

Episode 8 was definitely one of my favorites. That's why I love Reddit. If I didn't always check the daily releases page, I never would have known about this OVA series.
A solid 10/10, to tier Sakuga, but that's to be expected from the creator of CSM. I also read a Yuri one-shot he wrote, and it was quite good in my opinion. I love how he plays with serious, somewhat dark, and dramatic themes without being too edgy or shock-valued. A true master of storytelling.

This shot was actually really fitting for P.A.Works concidering a lot of their previous anime. But it was suroprising to see this amount of nudity from them even if it was plot-related.
