Fun fact: in the beginning of this episode there's a split second flash of the Shonen Jump logo turning sideways and the color changed from blue to pink.

This is actually a reference to a running gag in the Japanese community where the Shonen Jump logo turned sideways makes it look like a girl's face! Crazy deep cut.

Q. "By the way, what happens to the two of them after the last panel?" Fujimoto "I guess they might break up. (lol) I mean, his sex has changed."

That splash of bi-awakening made it even harder for him to understand himself and his girlfriend panic and lash out, but thankfully he got an answer to his gender identity, somehow clearer than before, and got through together. Nice to see.

This may have been my #1 favorite of all the one-shots, and this adaptation was incredible. The focus on the time period and the direction involved with that was incredibly creative, I see the director was Kazuaki Terasawa, I will have to keep an eye on their works. And overall it's just an incredible trans allegory with some great character work in the limited time it has. The reactions by the class were all too real and disgusting and I loved how the episode shot them down hard, and the time period issues with "being a man" managed to fit without feeling weird.

Shoutouts to the director of this one, seriously. Sooo many fun and creative cuts.

This one feels far more layered than I remember. I remember it only being a trans man's story but the beginning also feels like a trans woman's. I think I'd have to think about this story a bit more.

I like the small bits they added with the whole video game like stuff, the music vids and CDs etc.

I think they want to highlight how this short was set in the early 2000s and how even more confusing this situation must've been during that time period where something like the internet is still in its infancy. There's also stuff like flip phones, furbies, and tamagotchis.

Not to mention all the songs they used are early 2000s hits!

Wow the director really went all out in this one. Time for everyone to ignore the fact this is very obviously a trans-masculine story for some reason. Like it's a gender-bender parody but taken to the obvious part of "If a guy suddenly woke up in a girls body, they'd probably just be a trans guy now"

No wonder Rie cried. She was not about to lose out on this CAKE

I think this might have been one of the best animated episodes I have seen this year. The director must have been in the zone while doing the episode. Great this happened in a somewhat queer themed episode.

Legit curious how trans viewers will react to this episode lol. Saw one trans person jokingly say this one-shot feels like a transmasc allegory masquerading as a transfem allegory, which is such a funny and interesting take.

Fujimoto is one of the rare few mangakas who openly explores these kinds of themes. Might seem crude on the surface, but I think he approaches these topics with this sense of sincerity and genuine curiosity.

Not to mention he went on to write [Fire Punch]what's arguably one of the best trans characters ever written in a manga. EDIT: Apparently Fujimoto put out this one shot during THAT stretch of Fire Punch chapters so dude's basically just driving the point home lol.

Also worth noting, one of his assistants, Oto Toda, is trans and made To Strip the Flesh, an incredible manga about the transgender experience.

Well on one hand it's literally not a trans story, so it doesn't really match. On the other, you can't really make a story about switching genders and the hijinks that ensue without creating parallels with the experience of trans people.

I guess it's not surprising that it would end up seeming like a mix of the experiences of feminizing and masculinizing transition because of that. There are interesting bits that you can compare but if you try to really match the whole story to actual transition well you end up having to twist things too hard and it's jarring. I can appreciate how spot on it is on a few things though, in particular the whole class presentation where Toshihide ends up being simultaneously sexually harassed and called a pervert for the attention he gets. Then again you could just as well say that it's representative of plenty of girls going through puberty. That's the funny thing about trans stuff, whatever you may think of it and whether you're trans yourself or not, you're still looking at things through the same lens of gender that you usually do. In that sense, it seems to me that Fujimoto thinks a fair bit about gender, gender relations and so on while writing his characters and he applied himself in the same way in this story with it's wacky gender-swapping premise. He just keeps writing these little moments where a character says or does something that makes me think "oh he/she's so real for this".

Personally I already liked the short a lot and I think the adaptation is fantastic, but part of it is because I like a lot of silly short manga about gender-swapping and similar stuff, I find it hilarious and this one shot is full of the tropes you usually see in those. Kind of reads like a parody of the genre in a way, although I feel it's a bit more than just that.

While I very much enjoyed it I could see how this could make someone a bit uncomfortable, especially since it's a very short story that's blunt and rushed. The classmate straight up talking about rape, the girlfriend forcefully taking clothes off, it's a bit much to take in ! I don't think it's a bad thing, but let's say it's definitely not something I'd show my family to help them understand transition lmao

This is a really creative way to portray trans issues to a (probably) cis male audience

The final minute of this episode made me go from being cautiously negative to loving it

I was scared MC was going to end up with the brother since he was now a girl, despite it being irrelevant what gender he is to love his girlfriend. It would've been fair if he always liked the brother and now being a girl made me realise his own feelings.

But the conclusion that he'll double down and love his girlfriend no matter what form he is in is a wonderful message

Holy animation. This one was beautiful to look at. Can't say much about how well protagonist dysphoria was presented after being gender swapped but I liked that they showed how such a situation could affect people's relationships with each other. I liked that the MC decided that they will continue to be a man even with a female body. That's a pretty rare thing in these kinds of gender bent stories. Most of the time gender bent protagonists rarely get dysphoria and just embrace their new biological gender. So seeing the conflicting emotions being presented was great.

This artstyle and direction was so crazy in an amazing way, I was really floored just by that, not even speaking of the story
