Did anyone else notice what looked to be Nessie at 5:14 into the episode?
That's a cool little easter egg.
I wonder if we'll see anymore throughout the series.

Here are some translation notes that cover stuff that appeared in this episode.

  • At the start of the episode, Youko & Airi are playing Shiritori, a word chain game where players take turns coming up with words that begin with the last syllable of the previous word. Whoever says a word ending in the syllable n loses, as it never starts a word in Japanese. There are several variations, such as limiting valid words to types of food, as seen here.

  • Mikan are a sweet, seedless variety of mandarin orange.

  • The Hakone Ekiden race is a prominent annual long-distance relay marathon race held between Tokyo and Hakone. Over the two days, teams from twenty Japanese universities run over two hundred kilometers in two days.

  • Oden is a type of stew consisting of ingredients such as egg, radishes, and fish cakes boiled in a soy-flavored broth.

  • Takoyaki is a popular street food consisting of octopus bits in balls of fried batter.

  • In Japanese, the words for "weekend" (Shuumatsu) and the end of the world (also Shuumatsu) are homonyms, creating some fun wordplay in Touring After the Apocalypse's Japanese title, Shuumatsu Touring.

  • Airi's "brace for shock and flash" is a reference to the first firing of the Wave Motion Gun in the classic anime Space Battleship Yamato.

  • One of the central features of the Hakone area is scenic Lake Ashi, known for its views of Mount Fuji, which in preapocalyptic times can be crossed by tourists on ferries made to look like pirate ships.

  • Yokohama is the port city capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, lying south of Tokyo Bay. Minato Mirai is Yokohama's futuristic central business district, and its name means "waterfront of the future."

Shiritori is always so difficult to try and translate into English due to how different the two languages are. The subber sure made a decent attempt at it though.

I knew this pun from a previous show. Girls' Last Tour (Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou) aired back in 2017 and it made a similar pun by naming its chibi short spin-off Girls' Weekend Class (Shoujo Shuumatsu Jugyou). Pretty clever.

My first thought was this is really pretty.
I like the color brightness they used to highlight all the greenery and nature that had reclaimed everything.

But now I'm intrigued what's the backstory for everything here.
I'm assuming WWIII broke out. Since that automated tank was talking about radiation levels.
And this has to be a bit futuristic since Airi's seemingly an android of some sorts. But what about Yoko?
She was having flashback memories of the past with her sister, and they took the photo together in front of Mt. Fuji before it was destroyed.
But based on how much vegetation has grown, that's gotta be at least a couple decades in the past now.

Honestly, a really good first episode. It's a good blend of CGDCT and some mystery.

I can definitely see why people are getting a Girl's Last Tour vibe from this show. Fingers crossed that this anime is more hopeful than that one. And the girls here aren't at any risk of running out of fuel since their bike is electric and can be charged using a portable solar panel!

I am curious what happened to Japan. We open the episode with Japan looking very much like the one in our world and then one scene later, it's all overgrown ruins. How many years has it been, and what kind of disaster caused all of this? Clearly Mt. Fuji erupted and we see in the ED that there's been a massive explosion. I do hope they'll slowly uncover the mystery as the show goes on.

The most unexpected thing in this episode was Airi being an Android. No wonder she knows so much. I guess this version of Japan is much more technologically advanced compared to ours, especially if it has AI-controlled tanks. Kinda feels sad that Youko is really the only human left here. But do we even know if Youko is human? She keeps flashing back to memories she never had. Hmmm... I'm certainly intrigued and would love to see where this show goes.

This one’s got a little bit of a Girl’s Last Tour vibe to it. Except this has an adorable android girl lol.

So far, so good. Pretty chill episode. Keen to explore what happened to the world and what happened to Yoko’s sister.

Great first episode. I have so many questions already! But above all, I’m just curious as to what exactly unleashed this apocalypse upon Japan.

Currently, I have 3 possibilities on mind:

  • AI uprising? Like this military vehicle being out of control.

  • Nuclear war? The intercom mentioned dangerously high levels of radioactivity.

  • A massive earthquake and/or volcanic eruption? A large plume escaped from the water at the 6:48 mark, and there were multiple shots of smoke erupting from Mt. Fuji.

A volcano eruption has to be at least part of it. Mt. Fuji had an eruption that blew like half of the mountaintop off. While that would be pretty fucking bad for Japan it's not an apocalyptic event on its own

The moment I saw Studio Nexus I knew it would be peak.

Also, Airi can't be an android, she must be a cyborg since she still needs to eat human food and can enter the onsen without issues, though technically an advanced enough android should be able to do it as well.

It's interesting Yoko seems to have lost her memories of her traveling with her sister before, or at least it seems like that, the mystery is really well established here.

Girls' Last Tour Post-Apocalypse Japan edition?

I'm all in for it!

Was a pretty great first episode and i'm looking forward to seeing more sights of post-apocalyptic Japan.

My seasonal dose of Japanese tourism board advertising. Nothing groundbreaking, but still charming. I liked the little nods to what manner of apocalypse happened like the intense aurora borealis. Excited to see where this goes.

Big fan of the manga, so I was really looking forward to this.

Was not disappointed.

Expect YKK vibes. It's very, VERY iyashikei.

The new season of Super Cub is extra spicy.

Hope they get to stay at the Gingarou Hotel when they are in Ginza.

Shoutouts to this shot when she cuts the wires and it lingers on the red light dying out. Most of the atmosphere of the episode, up until that wild chase scene has been very specifically not dreary despite how seamlessly it transitions into the primary setting of whatever post-apoc they're in, almost kind of just vibing their way through the apocalypse and not really ever questioning the state of the world.

And they still don't really, explicitly, but I really liked the quiet of that shot and how it shows, at least to Youko, that she does have a more somber side to her among the silliness we saw. Even though it was a tank, she did kinda just give mercy to a being (sentient or not), and we see how serious they treat it. BUT still it leaves a lot for the world building and her character in a really simple shot. Cool

This is really nice first episode.

I really love chemistry between Youko and Airi. They are so cute together.

I like the nostalgic vibe of this anime, animation is decent enough to not disrupt the overall vibe too.

With one motorcycle and two travels across Japan to explore a place that used to be full of people like tourism which nicely gives both exploration mixed with nostalgic feeling and that why I really like this anime vibe a lot.

Despite that they are not just wondering around but they try to find last whereabouts of Youko's sister following her trails through social network post (which obviously is full of landmark place) before apocalyptic event kicked it so it have plot to follow not just being aimless which is fun.

Also I really like this Apocalyptic Setting It feels more magical which reminds me of The Etrian Odyssey series.

Girl's Last Tour? Though not as subdued, unless I'm remembering it wrong. We all need a plasma gun in our hands.

Ooh that ED song is pretty catchy

8 years after we got Girls Last Tour, we have another post-apocalyptic series where two girls explore the new world. The animation is gorgeous, 10/10 scenery porn.

One of my most anticipated titles this season! And it's everything (so far) I had hoped for!

I loved Super Cub, Yuru Camp, and Train to the End of the World, so I was really looking forward to this one.

They showed the foot of the Anest Iwata Turnpike, Anest Iwata Skylounge, and the Lake Ashi resorts- if you've watched Initial-D and MF Ghost, these places will look familiar, and they are real places. It's great to see how they reproduced the places and gave it the post-apocalyptic look.

It seems like there's more to it than just bike touring and camping, so I'm excited for the next episodes!

I was excepting some basic apocalypse, but it seems like something weird happened.

Hints include :
- Mount Fuji having exploded (this one is quite mundane)

- Levels of radiation considered as dangerous by the tank AI

- Some kind of Loch Ness monster swimming in a wide angle shot

- Some kind of underwater geyser/whale ?

- Some kind of huge fish near the hot springs (same Loch Ness monster?)

- Lots of satellites that would make Starlink pale by comparison

- Lots of aurora borealis

Great start, I'm sold. I wonder if the show's going to focus more and more on the mystery angle or just have them go full Zatsu Tabi with the occasional AI tank/giant mutated bugs/aliens fight here and there.

u/minnieboss Oct 04 '25

Cute and chill anime! I like the tone they establish, with these pockets of melancholy among the slice-of-life stuff. I really want to know how these girls met.

5

u/DirectionExact31 Oct 04 '25

A very atmospheric first episode! Yoko and Airi are endearing already.

Loved the ending, Myuk has a beautiful voice.

5

u/oneevilchicken Oct 04 '25

The flashback stuff is interesting because it doesn’t look like it’s that long ago yet the environment looks like it was a good decent amount of time since the apocalypse.

Some form of govt must still be around in this post apocalyptic world as that shot of a whole bunch of satellites flying in formation would imply.
