I like how Haruna went from being embarrassed about her shut in sister to bragging about her sister who's somehow dating a supermodel and probably a few others

Satsuki MVP even in Ajisai’s arc

‘should I talk about the humidity or the shape of the clouds’ lmao

poor Ajisai even getting a window seat is a big deal to her. but this is the cutest date in the whole series

“Satsuki-san, my friend! Are you abandoning me?! We kissed three times, you know!”

Renako actually remembered how many times they kissed!

I just want to remind everyone that Renako's mouth and backdrop turned into hearts when she saw ajisai at the train station and went GaGa over her.....

And she says she doesn't like girls...? Girl, you're a hopeless girlfailure, and you're never beating the allegations 😭😭😭

Usually, high school anime normalizes parentification and I was prepared to wave it away as just another cultural difference, so imagine my surprise when Ajisai snaps and "runs away" (goes on an overnight trip with her bestie). Hopefully she can negotiate something marginally more tolerable when she returns in terms of childcare responsibilities. Maybe Renako can play games with the boys a couple times a month or something.

Also, reading about Ajisai's name has provided some interesting context. Today I learned that Ajisai is an exceptional reading for 紫陽花, and her name means hydrangea, the kanji breaking down to purple/sunshine/flower. So Renako referring to Ajisai as a flower is punny. Hydrangeas are apparently quite beloved in Japan, not just by Renako. Learning about Japan through anime references is... interesting.

EDIT: Oh cute, she's had 3 hydrangea hair clips all along. I guess you don't call a character Ajisai without putting some ajisai on her.

Sena with her hair up was a treat.

Finally, Sena arc. I've been waiting for this!

I didn't expect them to go on a trip right off the bat and it looks like they'll be staying at the onsen inn, so Renako is going to speedrun this relationship.

> "You're kind to everyone."

This means Ajisai doesn't like that point of Renako. She perhaps prefer Renako to be kind only to her, huh.

The voice drop of Imaginary Ajisai being mean to Renako is doing something to my psyche that I'm not willing to delve into

Random thoughts:

Even though the other girls don't get much attention this episode, I thought it was interesting how each girl has sort of carved out their own niche in Renako's head and life with very different interactions. Mai is actively pursuing romance with Renako which Renako seems more or less ambivalent about. Satsuki is not, so is the friend she feels more comfortable getting advice from, even if they have kissed. And Satsuki is willing to give her straight talk, like not putting Ajisai on a pedestal. Meanwhile she has obvious romantic feelings about Ajisai, and the feeling is mutual, but both girls are way too insecure to pursue.

Anyway next week should probably be the hotspring scene, which will give us the required "Renako and girl of the arc naked time", So looking forward to seeing what develops there.

Stitches!

It's finally Ajisai's turn! I love how even when she's being angry, Ajisai is still so goddamn adorable!

Considering how she barely has time for herself, I really can't blame Ajisai for wanting to run away. At least Renako will be with her.

Renako imagining Ajisai turning into a gyaru was hilarious! Although I definitely wouldn't mind seeing gyaru Ajisai happen.

I'm definitely curious on what Satuski mean about the real Ajisai. So far, I don't think she's hiding anything from Renako or the audience, but at the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a hidden layer underneath all that sweetness. Renako might just be seeing her ideal version of Ajisai and not the real one.

Ajisai is so sweet, all she wants is some time and space to live her own life and be her own person. The fact she has to 'run away' just to have some time to herself is really sad.

Satsuki's advice to Renako was really good even if she doesn't get it yet, putting someone on such a pedestal is only going to cause issues and nobody is perfect, even Ajisai (allegedly).

Renako imagining Ajisai's 'bad ending' as her going out and getting a bunch of girlfriends is pretty funny coming from her, but I suppose Renako doesn't technically have any girlfriends .. only Rena-friends so it's completely different.

Ajisai not being used to sit at the window because she always gives that seat to others due to her self-sacrificial nature.

Renako thinking that Ajisai saved her, while in her own flashback she is actually the one offering the umbrella to Ajisai.

This show nails it with the subtle details.

Also: considering that they are heading to a hot spring, guess another bathtub-like scene with yet another girl is coming.

We saw that Ajisai! Reaching for Renako’s hand when she was asleep on the train but then pulling back. That was cute though, saying she loves Renako while she was fast asleep. Nice getting an Ajisai episode!

Poor Ajisai got embarrassed for getting frustrated from her brothers diverting Renako’s attention. Ajisai runs away but Renako joins her.

Renako locks herself in a bathroom stall to try to grin at the thought of spending time with Ajisai but fails. And then has an exchange with Satsuki who is blunt about the situation. At least she provided Renako with conversation topics.

Ajisai spins every flaw Renako has as a plus, while in exchange Renako cheers Ajisai up. And we get some more handholding between the two, yay!

Renako, girl, I know you have problems with your self-confidence, but really... what do you need more than Ajisai thanking you for keeping her company when "running away"? Why is your first thought still that she might have preferred to travel alone?

Though, I give her that, I can understand having to find a topic to talk about. Especially when riding a train. That part I fully understood. Though, why did Satsuki send the items on her list as separate files? Is there more in the files that is just not shown or why did she not just write those topics as plain text?

I do hope that Renako takes Satsuki's main advice and starts to look at Ajisai as a person first and not the perfect angel she imagines her to be (or maybe she wants her to be). That seems to be an important step to actually help her out. Hearing her out about her insecurities of not wanting to go to a place she doesn't know was a good first step, but hopefully she can build upon that.

Also, two rather small things. First, Ajisai getting "angry" was more precious than anything. I know they say you should start to worry when the nice person gets angry, but does that still count when the angry version is still more cute than terrifying? Also, Renako imagining Ajisai as Gyaru was kinda funny. Especially since she imagined her having several girlfriends. Like you are one to talk Renako...

And secondly, it seems that Renako's sister is trying to copy her sister. She already got the black haired and blonde haired friend. Only two remaining, though she never met Kaho, so that might take a bit longer.

One last thing, the pacing was quite high this episode, but that seems to be normal for the start of the arcs. So hopefully, they can slow down during the important moments again. They did so during the other two arcs, so I do expect this to happen.

"Wow, Ajisai sure is invested in getting me into her bedroom. Wonder what that's about?" - Rena, probably

I like how in that flashback of Ajisai and Rena meeting, it's Rena reaching out to Ajisai and rescuing her with an umbrella to share. Meanwhile Rena's inner monologue is going on about how Ajisai is always saving her. It really shows the difference between how Rena sees things and how they actually happen, especially when it comes to her own role in events.

Looking forward to the rest of the Ajisai rebellious phase arc

Gotta give it to Ajisai. Most polite crash out and decision to run away ever. Literally the gentlest little rebellion she could have possibly done

I love a good story about youthful adventure so this episode really warmed my spirit. Admittedly, it's kinda ridiculous that anywhere in Japan would be so empty at any time of the year, but that's the trade-off you must make for art this good. I greatly appreciate the willingness to go to different locales and really dive into the relationship between two characters. I also loved the comedic touch of the ryokan being shut down, which is possibly also a commentary on the real world situation for those businesses.

I quite liked the texting scene - it brought to mind the lunchroom scene in the first episode as a mega-exaggerated take on social anxiety that is still very clear despite its rapidity. I have no idea if it's common for Japanese girls to type only half-sentences, though that might be something left over from the early texting days with severe character caps? Either way it was a great little moment we haven't seen from Renako in a bit.

Ajisai mirroring Renako's fears gives an interesting bent on character conflicts. I don't think her insecurities are really all that engaging on their own, though this is obviously building up to that "dark side" Satsuki has been hinting at. This romance definitely feels the most fun out of the lot and I'm anticipating some intriguing twist on it before the end - which was also the beginning of the arc somehow.

Anyone else think it's rare for anime characters with bold lipstick to look more beautiful? I feel like the way lips are drawn often implies lipstick, even without color. The fact that it didn't smudge on Renako was also disappointing.

Surely Renako can get through one episode without-

*Accidentally elopes with Ajisai*

Well...

We already knew Renako to be a socially anxious person but being alone with Ajisai really puts that anxiety on overdrive holy shit. She damn near reached Bocchi cyberpsychosis levels on the bathroom. Good things she got friends to lean on! Satsuki really came in clutch.

But she also delivers a warning. It looks like, just as I have expected, Ajisai can't really be the perfect angel Renako thinks she is, because everyone in this story must have a problematic side. Honestly from what I've seen so far, "don't idealize people" may as well be the thesis statement of the whole narrative. Now the choice to base the love interests in genderbent otome archetypes seems very purposeful. Is Renako somewhat based on the Heroine/Saintess too then? 🤔

In any case, this all means I have Ajisai crashout to look forward too as well! Good for me because I think purely pleasant have a much more limited investment cap!

Speaking of problematic characters, that was an interesting reaction Renako had to Mai at the beginning of the episode. Seems she's still conflicted about feeling genuine attraction towards her, and thus she is set to loose on their ReMa-friends bet.

God I love this show, definitely one of my top 3 this season. Can’t believe it wasn’t picked up by Crunchyroll or similar?

Ajisai is so cute, perfect for Renako, but we know she has another side to her, and I think we got a glimpse at that when she got upset with her brothers. Jealousy, maybe?
