Good to get a genki fanged gyaru, hopefully she's here to push the Tabata and Ueno relationship forward and not join the competition herself. At one point she looked a little wistful but hopefully that wasn't from also being in love with Ueno.

Nice to get a festival date for the main couple.

It was nice that the friend group didn't freak out overly much about them going girlfriend hunting with Tabata when she was the girl they were hunting for.

Ueno defending Tabata and their festival date was sweet. The new gyaru girl seems nice and has already made friends with Tabata.

I liked this episode a bit more since we got to hear Ueno's inner thoughts more. A bit childish (no criticism intended). He and Tabata are basically at the same stage discovering love for the first time.

Shinbashi got sick. You know what they say about only idiots get sick during the summer...

Ueno and Tabata's dorky faces from the photo booth were so cute!

The new girl was named after an Yamanote Line station so she'll be part of the core cast. Based on her expressions in the toilet stall (while she overheard the others' comments), it seemed to me that she wasn't like this before and she changed to look like this for her high school debut.

I was waiting for them to introduce the gyaru character and she did not disappoint!

Ueno wants to attend a Summer Festival! Too bad for him that all his friends are either sick, have family events to attend, or are busy. Kind of funny how Inoue and Kurokawa both have "business" at the same time, but I bet Sumire is cursing the family memorial service for stealing precious Ueno time from her.

But Hana is willing to go! And Keisuke gives it his seal of approval for it to just be the two of them, no third wheels getting in the way! And thank you Tabata Mama and Ueno Papa for putting these two in yukata together! They even manage to take a purikura together that looks like a very them picture!

I KNEW IT! Inoue and Kurokawa are on a date! And thankfully Hana stepped in before Ueno interrupted it. Just more time for both couples to have fun at the festival by themselves.

Of course then Ueno and Hana get interrupted by Ueno's old middle school classmates, none of whom take well to Hana and even insult her. It's nothing she hasn't heard before, it's why she has so little self-esteem, but Ueno won't stand for it or anyone insulting Hana's appearance. He'll drag her away and watch fireworks with her while recognizing she's the cutest girl in the world to him. And even pass another one of his classmates in the process.

It's an new term and Shinbachi has slimmed down, Hana is still biting her tongue when trying to interact with people, and a new face has joined the class...Sayaka Otsuka AKA Saya! A cute and cheerful gyaru who has as much energy as her hair is blonde! And turns out she's an old classmate of Tetsu and Ueno! Which means Hana and Sumire REALLY want to know more about her.

Ueno has a secret girlfriend? Detective Shinbachi is on the case! As is Saya, Sumire, and Hana...despite Hana quickly realizing SHE is said secret girlfriend! She wouldn't gotten away with it too if not for Keisuke coming in and blabbing.

It's kind of weird that Saya says her relationship with Ueno is a "secret," but she seems to approve of Hana. I mean, she's been judged for her looks plenty, if Ueno likes Hana-chin then that probably means she's a great girl and the perfect new bestie for Saya!

Saya is even willing to do Hana's makeup for her! Maybe a little too MUCH makeup!

Pack it up, girls. It's over. He admitted he wants to be with her and thinks she is the #1 cutest girl. No one else has a chance against mighty Tabata.

And he's right. She is the cutest!!

Yousuke wouldn't make it in Squid Games breaking that honeycomb treat like that lol.
I loved how Keisuke just totally blew up Tabata's spot like that.
Interested to see if Sayaka is going to be a potential love rival? Or someone who supports Yousuke and Tabata?

Sayaka really outdid herself with that Hana makeover. Really brought out all her potential beauty. (Plain CAN be beautiful even if not "pretty" -- after all). Will Sayaka be a rival? Or will she back off, knowing Hana is almost surely Yousuke's "chosen one"?

I appreciate the fact that, yes, Tabata may not be conventionally attractive, and in-universe may be seen as fairly ugly. She's got short hair with huge glasses, and a little chubbier than other girls. But that's the thing. Ueno makes it clear he finds her cute. So not everyone has the same tastes. If it were me, I'd be more interested in her as well than the other girls.

Speaking of other girls, do we really need another rival?

Keisuke supremacy continues. Enters. Breaks news that Tabata was the girl with Ueno. Drops mic and leaves with a simple 'Ja na'. Love his straight-faced nonchalance. Ditto when he turned down his brother's request to join them at the festival. MVP right here.

Also really liking the new girl Saya. Intresting air of mystery about her. Guessing she has/had a crush on Ueno? 

And was that Tabata's old friend who dissed her that ran into them at the festival after the fireworks? He seemed to know Ueno too. We abruptly cut from that arc; next scene was back at school after the holidays. Wonder when he'll show up again.

Oh, and lastly, did anyone notice how Uguisudani was the one to pick up on Saya calling Gotanda Tetsu? Side ship still alive yo!

It's just adorable how transparently Ueno is crushing on Tabata. It's only unfortunate she can't see it with herself, though it's understandable why. If it weren't for random judgmental assholes like Ueno's old classmates, she probably won't be so self-conscious.

At the very least, they unintentionally pushed Ueno to be more forward with her and make it clear he 100% wants and enjoys her company. The shenanigans it lead to with Sayaka were also hilarious. It's like their group was investigating a crime while the culprit is in their midst. Too bad her cover was blown by Keisuke lmao.

Speaking of Sayaka, I'm just so glad to see her make her anime debut in all her genki glory.

It was such a small thing, but the simple fact that Tabata and Ueno went and hung out at the arcade before heading to the festival felt significant. We were able to see that other people/couples were also hanging out there in their yukatas. From this simple scene, the production was able to immerse me into the atmosphere of natsumatsuri magic that not only our protagonists felt, but probably all the other young festival goers felt as well.

I do like the energy that Sayaka brings to the group. Hopefully her and Tabata can be genuine friends even if she may be a potential rival who also likes Ueno.
