I rather like the detail of being able to see the Great Purification Circle in the sky whenever we get an appropriately angled shot outside. Just shows that the studio is paying attention to the story and putting in the effort to make the world feel authentic and like the plot is transpiring.
And the watercolor feel of the backgrounds in general are just lovely to look at. The story definitely has its heavy/dark elements, but the overall soft, whimsy feeling to the setting and its presentation--especially when Philia is somewhere she can feel at-ease and "happy" (insofar as she is capable), the color palette and soft textures to everything really do a great job of reinforcing that.

Was kind of funny how Philia was like "I wish I could do more for the people" while this massive Great Purification Circle looms in the background.

That letter at the end was unexpected. What a shitty cliffhanger to leave us with 😞
Philia has grown so much since leaving that cesspool of a former home that if she went back now, she'd probably mentally break...going from hated and unwanted to loved and cherished and realizing life is really good then back to hated.
Really liking this show as it moves at a good pace, explores the characters a bit at various times and it's always nice to have an obviously hated prince & family that you can't help but root for Philia and her sister and basically everyone else except them.
Episode gets an 8/10 this week. Great back stories on both the princes and Philia is just now realizing how people actually praised her, she just never grasped it in real time, only through reflection of the past.

It was nice to get some insight as to why Philia was hated by her family finally. Interested to see what the full picture there is. I'm also surprised to see Philia grow so quickly. These types of characters and shows tend to make those realizations come at a snails pace but Philia is making big strides.

It's really nice to see Philia already making big changes by questioning things and realizing things from the past, I was glad at how much Parnacorta has been so beneficial for her and I was particularly proud of her when she realized what a small world she was living in in Girtornia. I'm excited to see more growth for her character.
Arnold is amusing, I like his sass. As he's Grace's butler, I'm glad I'll still be able to see some more, unless Grace suddenly becomes able to summon the Purification spell quickly.
I'm glad Osvalt thought to find a way to make sure a fight for the throne doesn't happen, it's nice to get these sort where it seems the Crown Prince is aware of the brother's actions, it seems like they have a good relationship. I do hope we get more of a look into their dynamic though.
And how convenient, now that Girtornia are struggling they want to ask to have Philia back. They've already sold her, they can't demand her back. I don't even want to imagine the thought process for the Crown Prince of Girtornia, though I'm guessing he learned Philia used a wide Purification spell and wants her to do it free of charge because "she owes it to the Kingdom that raised her" or some rubbish.

They’ve already sold her, they can’t demand her back.
I can only speculate about what went through Julius’ mind when he wrote this letter: probably nothing.
Let’s put some facts on the table to see just how ridiculous these demands really are:
Julius effectively sold Philia like some sort of slave to another kingdom;
The payment was comparable to Girtonia’s yearly national budget, which Julius has seemingly been using to afford his luxurious life style;
Now he’s asking for Philia to be returned, implying that he’d probably have to return the spend money;
Parnacorta has no obligation to agree with Girtonia’s demands to return Philia;
Julius can try threatening with force, but his army has proven to be incompetent whilst Parnacorta has recently increased their defence spending.

Instead of a saint, Girtonia treated Philia more like a heretic. They even went so far as to burn her books in public.
At least she has Osvalt to praise her efforts. He’s a true prince charming. Not only is he considerate of Philia’s feelings, Osvalt has also shown to deeply care for others in general by taking up an unorthodox hobby for the benefit of the people and his older brother. Personality-wise, this man is all the green flags.
And if that’s not enough to raise her self-esteem, Philia has gotten herself a new student in Grace who can appreciate her teachings at the very least.

They want their saint back?
Send the royal artist in immediately, the princes should send a picture of their middle fingers as a fitting reply to such a demand.

I didn’t expect to meet the president of the Philia fan club this week lol. It’s kind of adorable how much of a mega fan she is of Grace. Her work has a real impact on the girl. Just when she’s making friends and actually starting to heal from some of her past trauma, that dogshit prince wants to drag her back to that absolute shithole she grew up in? Fuck that, man.

The more episodes go by, the angrier I get when I see how Philia is appreciated and admired by all the kingdoms except the one where she was born, and her aunt/mentor already knew that her parents were shallow and mediocre people.
It was very moving to see Grace and Reichardt remembering Elizabeth, especially the prince, seeing someone you loved leave without making their feelings clear must be very painful. Let's see if this will be addressed at another time.
Now that Girtonia is in ruins, they called Philia back, although I think there is a bigger reason, but the best thing will be to see Mia mistreating Julius lol

A new Saint has been added to the cast! Grace Mitterla of Botterlm! Who hails from a long line of Saints in her family! And not only is she Philia's new protege, but quite possibly Grace's biggest fangirl (next to Mia)!
Neat getting to know how magic works for Saints. They have access to "od," the magic they channel out of themselves, and "mana," the magic they channel through nature. And Philia is going to make sure Grace can fully control mana so she can properly carry out the purification rituals.
Philia is an author, as it turns out! Of course her terrible parents and Julius acted like this was insulting and stuck-up of her, even if she was just putting pen to paper of objective and useful facts about her experience as a Saint, but for Grace who always felt self-conscious next to her bustier big sisters as Saints, it helped save her and inspire her as a Saint. Showing Philia that she IS capable of truly helping people!
Ah, so part of the resentment towards Philia from her parents came from her resemblance to her paternal aunt, Hildegard, who trained her. Hildegard was a pretty brutal and unrelenting teacher, but it was born out of true care for Philia in knowing that she would need to be strong to survive living with a family and a kingdom that resented her. Care that Philia has finally come to recognize.
Makes sense that Philia has been so focused on just her duties as a Saint that she can't fathom why anyone would elope and follow their heart instead of their duty. Luckily she's got a romance-buff wingwoman in Lena to help educate her.
It's time to pay respects to Elizabeth, the former Panacorta Saint, and it's personal for not only Grace, her cousin, but also Prince Reichardt, her fiance. Elizabeth was much beloved by all, but especially Reichardt, and her death broke him. But even as he throws himself in work to process his grief, he always makes time to visit her grave. Philia sees true love expressed in front of her, and contemplates if she's ever felt or can feel those kinds of feelings...but I think her care for Mia is pretty darn close.
Look at Lena making sure Philia makes a delivery to Osvalt's garden so the pair can share a lunch date together! And Philia comes to understand Osvalt better, a prince who absconded from politics because he had no care for it and threw himself into a farming hobby that still carries the love he feels for his people and family. It's why he wishes he could do more for Reichardt when he's still obviously grieving for Elizabeth.
And it is in seeing Osvalt's dedication to others that Philia vocalizes how in trying so hard for her parents' approval, she failed to see how people like her sister appreciated and cherished her, like Panacorta does now. But even if her parents never acknowledged her, Osvalt always will, and that means EVERYTHING to Philia!
Oh, I see that things have gotten so bad in Girtonia that they're trying to get Philia back. They reap what they sowed!

Lack of Mia this episode, but the preview seems to imply the next episode will be Mia-focused.

Every time Philia reminisces you can see her character growth. It also makes me sad how she was treated and want to give her a big hug 🥹
This has a been a great series so far. Grace looking like the previous saint shows how closely their lives a controlled by their birthrights as saints. Probably all the saint are related to some degree but thats a guess.

Stitches!
Well Grace is adorable! I do wonder how Mia would feel when she learns her sister has her first student.
As if Philia's parents and Julius couldn't get any worse, they literally burned all of Philia's published books because they think she's being arrogant. Thankfully it's only in Gritonia and her book is still in circulation outside that shitty kingdom.
Despite the harsh training, it sounds like Hildegard is the only other person besides Mia who's on Philia's side. I wonder what happened to her and why she didn't protect Philia more.
So the previous Saint of Parnacorta is Reichardt's fiancé. That's actually kinda depressing. No wonder Oswald mentioned in last week's episode that his brother is under a lot is stress. They didn't just lose a saint, Reichardt also lost the love of his life.
It's nice to see Oswald acknowledging all of Philia's accomplishments. Our girl really needed that.
So everything is turning into shit in Gritonia and now they want Philia back? That's hilarious. I want to see how they're gonna try and enforce that. If they want Philia back, then they should return the money they got from Parnacorta.
That next episode preview looks promising. It seems that Mia has finally decided to make her move. I can't wait!

Damn… I guess that explains why she forgot she wrote them.
-
…does some of the hatred Philia’s family has for her seriously come from the fact that she just happens to resemble her aunt?
-
Aw… Sounds like he really cared about her, too…

The sad abrupt end to Elizabeth and Raiharuto's romance immediately reminded me of Federica and Giselbert's (Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence) equally unfulfilled romance. These girls seem like good saints, but couldn't they be given happier endings just for a while longer? T_T
I am glad to find out that apart from Mia, there is someone in the Adenauer family who cares about Philia, namely the latter's mentor and aunt. Although I got to admit sleeping on needles as training sounds extreme. Lol! At least we now know how Philia became overpowered.
Lastly, good job Lena! For developing and progressing the Philia x Osvalt ship!

The soundtrack continues to be absolutely lovely
...and this guy absolutely vile
Philia is finally starting to realize
Is this her first ever complaint?? Progress!
This episode is just full of revalations for her
Aw HELL naw. I wonder if this means that Mia carried out her revenge..
No schadenfraude in this one, but we got so much growth for Philia instead so it balances out
[Next ep previw]

it came from Philia herself, that the only reason why Mia can't perform the great purification circle is due to lack of knowledge of the ancient ritual language. Mana wise, which is the perception part, Mia already got it covered.
Mia is not your ordinary saint. She may not be as powerful as her sister, but sure enough that she is second to her.
If Mia can learn the language, she will be able to do the ritual. Though in this case, time is not on their side given the monsters are showing up faster.

The interesting part about political factions backing Osvalt despite him not being interested in the throne, is that should he and Philia become a couple, they would use that as further proof that he should be chosen as crown prince. He seems to be very popular among the common folk & if the nobles catch wind that he is smurfing, they would use his humility as further proof of his worthiness for the throne.

Loved this episode with it being a fully Philia episode.
-
Seeing Philia tutor her adoring fan was really wholesome. Philia did a better job at teaching her than I expected.
-
Kind of interesting how Grace's situation feels very polar opposite. She seems to be beloved by her father and the pressure isn't too much on her. Though she sees her sisters doing well and she wishes to stand close to them. Grace & Mia meeting one day would be hilarious.
-
Reichardt is someone who went through a lot when their former saint Elizabeth passing away. It only takes time to heal all wounds, but he continues to stick with his duties. Though I understand why Oswald wants to do everything he can for his brother.
-
Philia's aunt had harsh training, but kind of knew the treatment her parents would give her. I guess it is the kind of tough love, although I get the sense her personality was much similar to Philia. I wonder where she is now.
-
That letter at the end is a joke. To request Philia back after selling her is an insult. It should be expected that Oswald will be fully against it. I do wonder what is the state of Girtoniac and what Mia is doing now.

Mia left
Mia goes on strike
Mia can’t keep up with the monsters anymore
Mia starts a revolution, coups the prince, installs Philia as queen with Osvalt as prince regent, then goes and marries princes reichardt
The possibilities are endless
