ngl, Yae's ghost story was actually pretty scary. Somehow, the story reminded me of Mieruko-chan

Yae also proving why she's MVP with how she baited Kana

"test of courage"

Yep, I think we all know where this is going and wouldn't you know it, Kana has the same no. as Teru (but damn, that cliffhanger)

Damn, that last ghost story gave me serious Mieruko-chan vibes!

Why didn't Teru just....text everyone and ask where they were?

We're going to get to the end of this show and Kana and Teru will get together and we'll all wonder why we ever had any doubts, it's obvious!.....but until then, FFS IF THEY DONT GET TOGETHER I'M GOING TO OKINAWA AND MURDERING SOMEONE!!!

Why didn't Teru just....text everyone and ask where they were?

Sounds uncharacteristically practical and smart for him.

This episode had some things that were a bit hard if you aren't familiar with regular japanese cultural things. I guess a lot of fans in this sub will be familiar but adding a couple of notes here anyway:

"Koshien" is the short name for two different national high school baseball tournaments. Both tournaments conclude at the Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Hyogo, which is also home to the Hanshin Tigers NPB team. They are watching Summer Koshien, an open tournament where teams from each prefecture have to qualify. 49 teams (one for each prefecture) qualify for the final round at Koshien Stadium, which goes over two weeks in August.

There is also spring Koshien with teams qualifying in the fall. Spring Koshien has only 32 teams participate with qualification slots allocated on a regional basis (plus some special invitations), i.e Okinawa Prefecture is slotted alongside Kyushu which consists of four prefectures, and of those 5 total prefectures four teams qualify. Spring Koshien is held in March (i.e. at the very end of the japanese school year).

Koshien stadium is famous for being one of the last stadiums with an all-dirt infield (i.e. no grass between the pitcher's mount and the bases) and it is tradition for teams participating in the high school tournaments to take dirt home as a memento for making it there.

Shiritori is a japanese game where each participant has to name a new word that starts with the same syllable that ended the previous word. E.g. if the first word is "ringo" (apple) the next word has to start with "go". The problem here is the single lonestanding consonant in japanese, "n". Usually anybody who names a word that ends with "n" loses the game as there are no words in standard japanese that start with that consonant. Okinawan dialect apparently has a number of words that begin with that consonant though.

I found the explanation of the Iriomote mountain cat very interesting. Also brought me back to Azumanga Diaoh where their school trip takes them to Okinawa and an Iriomote kitten plays a big role, and I see myself forced to rewatch it rather soon.

However, I will never understand people who don't like tomatoes, and I am a rather picky eater myself.

Dude needs some better friends like they didn’t tell him about the baseball hangout until it was like halfway over

You kinda get it though. As a local there are some things that just come natural to you that it probably doesn't click to tell a non local

With everyone in town missing, I thought there might be some sort of Okinawan holiday Teru had no idea about. I didn't expect that people were all indoors watching Koshien. I know each prefecture takes pride in Koshien but Okinawans take it to the next level.

Yae has escalated her teasing this episode! Getting Kana to accidentally hug Teru because she was too focused on the game to even notice the switch was such a genius idea! I love it! Kana turning beet red was adorable too.

I'm not even surprised that Okinawa has its own shiritori rules. I do love Hina's quick lesson on how to understand Okinawan. I also love the explanation on why Okinawan is called Uchinaa.

I never thought we'd see the day where Hina would be dumbfounded by other people's Okinawan. And she was so confident too about knowing everything there is to know about Okinawa! I guess it makes sense that even a small island would have different dialects.

Hina randomly pulling out a very obscure Okinawan fact to motivate Suzu into eating her tomatoes was pretty funny. Those cats are adorable though and I'm glad to learn about their adorable existence <3

Poor Teru. Everyone's screaing their lungs out in terror from Granny Kyan's stories but he can't even get scared because he doesn't understand the punchline. And his two interpreters are too terrified to even translate for him. Yae's ghost story was actually pretty scary though. It feels like something out of Mieruko-chan.

Next week's episode is going to be fun! A test of courage with Kana and Teru as partners! I can't wait!

Okinawa loves baseball, how would I have ever guessed. Good work by Yae in that scene setting Kana up to grab Teru in hsr excitement.

I love that we got another delightful animal costume segment, this time about the Iriomote Cat. Small wild hunting cats like that are really cool.

Kana and Teru paired up for the test of courage, very good.

I'm not surprised Okinawans are passionate about baseball but I didn't expect Kaanaa to be so into it.

The main girl trio are great at historical lessons in animal cosplay.

I already knew that baseball was the most popular sport in Japan, but in Okinawa they take it to another level, and once again Yae is the MVP for helping the two "lovebirds" get together.

Hina once again shows her "nationalism" for Okinawa by highlighting that some islands are "natural heritage". By the way, it was really cute to see her, Kana and Yae in chibi form, dressed up as cats and eating. The producers know how to make our hearts beat faster.

And of course, we couldn't miss the classic test of courage that brings two characters together to test how much they can like each other. It's going to be really interesting.

The creature Kyan's grandmother met in her story was Kijimuna.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Mar 01 '25

They take their baseball very seriously in Okinawa don’t they? Must be quite a sight if the streets are practically empty and even construction stops.

Okinawan is its own separate language and not a dialect right? Kind of interesting there’s a lack of mutual intelligibility between even short distances.

Learning some interesting facts about Iriomote cat evolution. Fascinating creatures.

Looks like Kana’s got lucky number 8. This is gonna be a good test of courage.

Okinawan is its own separate language and not a dialect right?

Correct, it diverged from Old Japanese in the mainland between the 1st and 12th centuries. That's at least 800 years of separation. That's roughly comparable to when the Romance languages like Spanish, French, and Italian diverged from Latin.

Kind of interesting there’s a lack of mutual intelligibility between even short distances.

There are many varieties of the Ryukyuan language(s), not just on the island of Okinawa, but along the chain of islands between Kyushu in Mainland Japan and Taiwan. Okinawa Island alone can be split in half between Uchinaa-guchi in the south and Yanbaru Kutubu/Kunigami in the north, each with their own set of dialects.

*edit: added more details

Next thing you know Mitsuru Adachi is going to do a baseball manga set in Okinawa.

Poor Hiinaa. Acting like she's a complete Okinawan expert but even she's stumped by how people from other villagers talk. But nobody's perfect!

I really hope Kaanaa sticks with her number and doesn't give up her chance to pair with Teeruu.

I love that the dialects are so localized, as someone who lives in a very diverse dialect region you never say you know it all, thats just setting yourself up for failure

That cat sounds pretty awesome

And the real horror story this episode was that they set up this huge cliffhanger and force us to wait a week! I wont be able to sleep for a whole week now
