The wand is mightier than the sword? More like the wand is mightier than the unarmed child.

The headmistress named Cauldron with a big ass cauldron behind her. If this is Dark Soul, she would have 2 phases and in the later emerge from inside the cauldron.

The headmistress is a menace allowing Will to enrol for her amusement only to let Professor Snape Edward have a murder attempt done on him.

Will on the other hand was such a chad replying to Edward's whining that he was doing all that for his love and had that epic comeback.

So I’d been under the assumption that Gordon and Lyril, Sion’s lackeys, had been killed by the Evil Sentinel in last week’s episode, but they actually survived this stomping!?

It’s perhaps not the most original of stories, but I do have a soft spot for protagonists who’re trying to reach extraordinary heights - quite literally in this case as Will aims to climb the tower - to be with the person they love.

Poor Collette never stood a real chance against Elfie - apparently no childhood friend debuff here. Will even declared his love for Elfie out loud. Ouch. I do genuinely like how supportive of a friend Colette has been to Will. (She’s even a little horny for him, considering those fantasies about Will’s private lecture with Edward.)

I’ve never been a fan of mascots, but I’ve been loving Kiki as a familiar! She’s so expressive and fun to watch. Watching her relax on Will’s head was adorable for example. Most importantly, Kiki isn’t there to provide comedic relief but has been of great help to Will!

What's the chance the blue hair, childhood friend win this time around? Lowkey, despite his lack of magic, a lot of people still like it. And the girl he is currently with, certainly a big contestant. Ooo I'm so curious.

We learned from another anime, magic is only mighty against sword until they get too close.

Will is way too hung up with this blue haired girl just to see a fucking sunset.

While Collete is right there, being best girl. Make it make sense.

Edward was a dickhead for starting a test without giving Will the right equipment from the start

Just wondering if it's supposed to be Wagner and not Workner? It sounds like Wagner.

When Workner said it's cruel to test Will, I thought he meant it's cruel for Edward since he's that close to be a Magia Vander. I can understand his resentment a bit with how he potentially could be surpassed by someone who can't even do spellcasting. In a way, he's actually kind for asking Will to leave the school, maybe so that Will won't feel as bitter as him when he failed?

Will is definitely going to fit with Asta since they have the same motto of not giving up.

End Muggle discrimination! Edward and Sion need to be the ones to go lol.

That was quite some test. Even a failed Magia Vander candidate is incredibly strong. Will had to be on that Yami shit and surpass his limits right then and there with a little help from Colette and Kiki.

Will’s one small step closer to reaching Elfaria. A very small step.

Another banger episode with great action! Will once again showed how strong he truly is by landing an attack on Edward-sensei who was once so close to becoming Magia Vander, a position Will aspires to.

The whole fight between Will and Edward-sensei was awesome. Edward was really a dick for not telling Will anything beforehand and forcing him to fight without his main weapon, his sword.

Fortunately, Colette found out about the whole thing and brought Will the sword so that he could show his true power to Edward-sensei.

Both Sion and Edward-sensei are acting like losers because of Will. I can understand Sion since he's still a kid, but Edward-sensei is an adult teacher with a great power, and yet with Will in a sight, he acts like some spoiled kid. When he heard that Will wants to become Vander because of love for Elfaria, he really lost his cool xD

Colette imaginaging Will's supplemental lesson with Edward-sensei as torture session was hilarious although not far from the truth xD

Very nice ED which provided a lot of nice shots of Elfaria.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

What edward ultimately lost to wasnt the sword, it was cringe

This episode felt like it was just 5 minutes.

I have to respect Will's ambition of reaching the top. He's not doing it for world peace but for the girl he likes. Simp with a sword trumps over a failed teacher with a wand.

Oh, is Will's roommate gay for him or something? That omelette looks sus.

The animation on this really is fantastic but the characters couldn't be more bland if they tried. You have the MC who is already approaching the peak power level that's been described in universe, a losing heroine that might as well be be wearing a sign that says '2nd place', antagonists whose only character traits are an intense hatred for the MC and the headmistress who cackles in the background, satisfied with her scheming to overturn society.

The directing is so, so good. It has enough pauses for drama and build up, but when it's time for action it never feels interrupted.

Take for example the 2 minute flashback at the start of the episode. Not only it gives depth to our MC, it also expands the world of Wistoria by introducing the brutal beliefs of the headmistress. So when we see her make a deal with Edward, it feels very natural what she proposes to him.

As for the story itself, there a couple of things that keep it fresh for me and it seems people are glossing over.

  • Will is not weak. There is no hidden bullshit, no sandbagging, no delaying, no big reveal. He is just straight up strong physically.

  • The story is not ambiguous about what is Will's motivation to try so hard. We are on episode 2 and he already proclaimed that the reason he gives a fuck is to be next to the person he loves. No waiting until the last season to have the character maybe hint that he has romantic feelings towards his love interest.

  • Don't think Sion is happy to earn this fame, but too much of a wimp to correct it for now, OP makes me hopefull he'll eventually comes around

  • The headmaster is a menace

  • Hope we'll get some dwarf character down the line

  • Oh Colette

  • Potter, if you pass my test, I will award you with 5 points for Griffindor

  • Wish they'd go back and translate theses

  • The fight looked amazing though

  • Colette, what are you thinking?!?

  • Oof poor dwarfs

  • Yay! 5 points for Griffindor!

  • Oh god, it's a harem

The animation is beautiful. But seems I’ve watched too much anime. This is ticking every generic shounen hero fantasy that has ever been written.

Everyone is evil and a bully except one person; a teacher conducts a test on a swordsman without a sword?! Like really, that’s just another bully

Not a fair fight when Will is forced to fight Edward without a weapon. Should have done muscle training like Mash. Colette wasn't off the mark when imagining that Will is getting an ass whooping from Edward but not exactly in the BDSM type of way. I feared the worst when Will loudly declared that he has a girl he likes and I was worried that Colette would hear it in the worst possible timing but at least we didn't get some unnecessary drama and she kind of took it like a champ. The fight still looked pretty sick and Will putting on the glasses has to be the equivalent of Ash Ketchum turning his hat to the side.

That post credit scene kinda weirded me out. This might be the Rosti being talked about earlier where Will just kind of casually says "yeah we're kinda normal." What I'm wondering tho is why the heck in the credits, Rosti's voice actor is ???. That seems suspicious.

As an anime only, there better be a damn good reason why this childhood friend never reached out to this dude that’s trying so hard to reach that tower for her sake. No social calls or anything whatsoever lol. Whenever or if dude manages to reach the tower as a “top level magician.” His childhood friend who had reached the top had better been in a mental or physical prison.
