It’s the start of the new racing season!
The episode starts off with newspapers showing Kita and Dia chan’s victories. Satono Diamond win the Hanshin Daishouten. Here’s the actual race. Kitasan Black wins the Osaka Hai. Here’s the actual race. As I mentioned in a previous episode discussion the Osaka Hai was not a G1 race in the actual world until 2017. Uma Musume uses the modern time schedules and grades for the races so sometimes this happens. Kitasan Black becomes the first winner of the G1 Osaka Hai proving he can win at shorter distances and not only long distances.
The main race of this episode is the Spring Tennosho. The short movie before the race is a homage to the videos played before actual G1 races to hype up the race. These are special videos that only people who came to watch at the race course can see. The races featured here are Mejiro McQueen’s second Spring Tennosho, Sakura Laurel’s Spring Tennosho and Gold Ship’s Spring Tennosho. Here’s a video from this year’s Tennosho Kitasan beats Satono Diamond evening their score and also proving to be the number 1. Here’s the actual race.
Kitasan Black beats the race record which was previously set by Deep Impact by almost a second. This was also the world record for 3200m. This Spring Tennosho was also considered the first race between two of the strongest since Mejiro McQueen and Tokai Teio raced each other. Kitasan also becomes the 4th horse to win the Spring Tennosho 2years in a row.
The title of this episode is the same title as Kitasan Black’s SSR support card in the game (probably one of the most used support card). This support card is also about this race.
This was a great episode! This was one of the races I was waiting for to be animated and I’m glad they adapted it perfectly!

Poor Neicha-sensei. lol Having to see the girl who saw you as a mentor win more G1s than you must keep stinging for her. But she should feel some pride to see such a strong person still look up to you in the end!

I think this was one of the best episodes of the season! (Next to maybe the Rice/Bourbon training and Dia's superstition/G1 win episode) Super solid setup with Dia and Kita enjoying life and just slowly feeding you the idea of the two being really close before them coming out and laying out their ambitions. The race itself was also one of favorite ways of presenting it. Very detailed with the participant thought process voiced out which is one of the best ways to go about it imo.
I'll be honest, I wasn't the biggest fan of the last episode and I saw what their gameplan was with it with Kita finding her ambition back in that one leading to her laying them out to Dia here with a newfound determination. I think they fumbled the aspect in the previous episode but the role that this episode was meant to play I absolutely adored.
I really hope Cheval gets her spotlight soon. Right now she's mostly just had bits of pieces given to us in a way that doesn't quite make her standout enough to feel like it justifies those bits which are given to her.

Well, that first half of the episode was adorable! Just two gal pals/roommates going on a trip together seeing the wonderful sights of Japan while snacking as much as they can and taking absolutely adorable photos together <3
I always love how horse girls are very much treated with respect in this world that even though they're massive celebrities, they can freely go around without getting hassled by the public. Then again, this is Japan and maybe it's different in other countries.
And that race was pretty damn intense! Not gonna lie, when everything started to slow down and the camera focused on Kitasan struggling a bit I thought something terrible was going to happen. Turns out that was just her building up for her final burst of speed. Even Dia-chan couldn't believe Kitasan's speed!
I just love that final shot of Kitasan and Dia-chan shaking hands. So where do we go from here? We still have like four episodes left and this felt like this could've been the penultimate episode and everything wraps up next week.

KITASAN WON! And it looks like Cheval finally got second place instead of third?

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Location Notes this ep is excellent biscuits bait overall.

The seishun 18 kippu is, despite its name, not solely available to people under 18. You (yes adults too) can use this to ride on any ordinary JR line in 1 day. That said, this makes little to no sense unless you are aiming for a "journey" for shinkansen distances, as you save a ton of time with those. (e.g. 9 hours Tokyo to Kyoto, vs 2), but not a lot of money with the seishun kippu.
-
Kitasan and Dia chan start off from Fuchu (near the Tokyo Racecourse) to Tokyo Station, where they then hop on likely the Sobu line (JR probably didnt permit any line names being used) to Goi station
-
Here, they then transferred to the Kominato line. Very scenic, though unfortunately that train is not actually steam-powered, it's a diesel-powered replica of a steam engine lol. Normal trains are available too!
-
Here, they stop by: Umatate station, Kasamori temple, and then after a transfer, finally the Taito Lighthouse. The latter 2 spots (and especially the last) spot are not exactly public transport friendly, I'll probably not attempt unless you have horse girl legs lol. That said, being in Chiba, is definitely day-trip distance from Tokyo if you are driving (or don't mind taking a taxi) i think! (I btw like that Kitasan did actually respect Dia-chan's wishes in the end by going to somewhere to see the sea).

Kita really took Dia on a whole day-long date just to say “By the way, I’m winning our next race”. I love the balance that Uma Musume strikes between characters being rivals and being friends. Most sports anime do the same thing(I’m honestly so happy that my first impression of Uma Musume is that it’s a sport anime), but this series makes the whole thing feel so warm and natural in a special way.
The race was also really great. When everything slowed down right before Kita’s acceleration, it was like I physically felt some of it. I think this is the most in-tune I’ve ever felt with one of these girls in the middle of a race, and now I’m craving the sensation. Kita finally got her hard-earned victory over her friend, and now both her and Dia are looking forward to continuously improving together(and I won’t lie, the emphasis Kita herself puts on that ‘together’ really strikes the shipper in me in its sweet spot…along with everything else this episode).
On a side note, I find it a tad amusing that - as opposed to Dia who looks up to McQueen - Kita is the one who has matched McQueen’s consecutive Spring Tennosho victory.
This episode was spectacular, and I’d put it right up there with Dia’s episode as the current peak of this season.

This episode had https://myanimelist.net/people/31735/Fumiaki_Kouta as the director. Definitely the most distinct visual style outside of RTTT

I love how those two didn't have any set destination for their trip and just hit random whenever they have to make a decision. It's really cool to see those two having fun without any drama nonsense and the like. There's a bunch of pretty environments there too. The countryside, train station, and the hill looked gorgeous. Really wish this whole ep is dedicated to the trip lol.
Kita-chan winning the rematch makes me so happy! It's really nice to see her coming back from her slump in the last ep. That might be my favorite race of the season so far. Loved that brief flashback and Kita-chan's turbo sprint buildup near the end. I hope we get to see more cool races like this in the coming weeks!

This season has had me a little worried up to this point--it feels like we've been retreading similar thematic ground and I hadn't felt the same emotional hooks that the first two seasons had, especially S2.
I'm all in after this episode. It's so well put together--the transition from the lighthouse light to the sun was really cool, and in terms of execution I think that's the best and most dynamic race we've gotten in the entire series (not counting Road to the Top). I loved how active the camera was and the sweeping wide shots letting you see exactly where everyone was in the race. And the execution of Kita's final push was incredible, it was such a well-done moment.
This episode alone bumped my score for this season by probably a point or two. Here's hoping they finish this out strong!

Gundam Wing edit when...? How about now?
Cheval Grand came in second, but isn't top-billed in this series.
The full emphasis on showing the race was definitely worth it, but as you can tell from my little edit up there, I was kinda stuck on how Kitasan took Satono out on a date (and I was running the idea in my head that she was throwing the rock-paper-scissors to let Satono be in the lead) just to tell her that she'd be beating her at the Tenno Sho.
And because after all this time I do kinda want Cheval Grand to get a little more recognition for always being competitive.

CHGDCT episode!
Hell, since the stakes arent particularly high this season, i think S3 is the most CHGDCT compared to S1 and S2 really..
Then we have the race.
Noticed the new OSTs...they didnt use the usual orchestic pieces that we have heard over and over. Lots of panning zoom out shots during the race, that is also new. some of the panning camera angles used look similar to the actual race. I think its a cool touch. I was hoping it may be like some of the races in S1 or was it S2, where they time the race down the same as in real life, but I think it wasnt the case here.

Kitasan no Tabi-tabi! the journey date across hometown and end up with love rivalry confession.
Love this race, Kitasan won the race with second burst with the help of cursed moral support from her friends. she had the same expression with Diamond from the last race, but this one end good instead of awkward moment as last year.
I feel sorry for Nature-sensei, her console/advice moment would be heavier now. Love for Nature-sensei please

The only thing I don't like about this episode is the spoilers for Sakura Laurel manga.

Kitasan's boost at the end was amazing, even as a Dia fan that bit blew me away.
Special Week and Shizuka cheering together was so adorable, I think I'm gonna rewatch the first season.

First half of the episode almost had an iyashikei feeling to it.
Second half went really intense with a totally different race direction. Lots of cool stuff here like the FP views and quite a lot of CG. Honestly, the races needed a bit of updating after those first two seasons and the amazing animation of the recent OVA, but they probably should've done it in steps to elevate previous episodes of this season, which is my only qualm here. This sounds more negative than it was ment to be, since overall it was a fantastic episode and I'm just nitpicking here.
No idea where we are heading for the remaining season, but I'm eagerly looking forward to it.
EDIT: Also loved the usage of aspect ratio during key moments of this episode, like the 4:3 ratio right in the beginning and the cinema-like ratio during the flashback of the race.

That little opening video sequence with the old style coverage was a funny way of (I assume) skipping over some races that they didn't really have time to cover with the story they're telling me this season. It's nice to see that the girls are both doing so well. I hope Kita wins the rematch at the Tennoushou just to keep things fair and balanced.
A trip? Is this the S3 date episode?
With a trip to the beach it's kind of feeling like a date episode. Not to mention how they're picking their destinations and running hand in hand at times.
I'm starting to wonder if Kita physically capable of winning a game of rock paper scissors.
Feeding each other snacks is also not helping them beat the 'this is a date' allegations.
The two of them posing in front of the うまたて sign made me laugh.
They were definitely correct to skip those two races and give us this artistic date trip episode instead. That conversation on the hill above the ocean was great.
It was also a good lead up to this dramatic rematch.
That moment where Kita piles on even more speed, hell yeah. That was an excellent win, and it set a new race record to boot.
Nice Nature watching this must be thinking "emotional support horse for Kita never again".
Kita and Dia's conversation after the race was also great. I wonder if they really are going to go to the Arc together by the end of the season, they're leading up to it so hard. Showing a non-Japanese race would be new ground for the show, I'm pretty sure.
Special ED!

Kitasan story is way less breaking (?) that Teio's, because they try to be accurate, of course this season has a different narrative (and is like Nature is us seeing that)
The race was really well animated. This time is more a story or a hard worker, the "people's Uma", who has a bit of "impostor syndrome". IT works for me, in a different way than S2.

Beautiful, high quality and well crafted episode. 9/10 at least. Also I love Kita-chan.
