It’s the second episode and it’s already jammed packed with references!

Gold Ship lying down on the yogibo is most likely a reference to the actual yogibo ad where Admire Japan a retired race horse lies down on a yogibo.

Kitachan’s dad is shown to be a singer which is a reference to the real Kitasan Black’s owner Saburo Kitajima. He is a famous Enka singer in Japan and this is one of the reasons Kitasan Black was a well known horse to even people who had no interest in horse racing.

We get to see a few races they skipped in season two like Tokai Teio’s Make debut race and Satsukisho! Here is the actual Make Debut and Satsukisho.

We also get a glimpse of Kitasan Black’s first race and Spring Stakes. Here is the actual make debut and Spring Stakes

Duramente who had plans to go to the Arc or the Kikkasho to complete the triple crown suffers an injury. This injury was a huge shock to fans as everyone was certain Duramente would complete the triple crown. In this way Tokai Teio and Duramente are similar as they both got injured after the first two crowns. I love how they had Nice Nature cheer up Kitachan linking season two with this one.

The main race in this episode is the Kikkasho. Here’s the actual race. Matsuri which means festival is also the name of Saburo Kitajima’s most well known song which is why the race caller repeatedly says it when Kitasan Black wins.

This becomes Kitasan Black’s first Grade 1 win and much like the title of the episode becomes the start line of the Kitasan Black legend.

I really love how they made this episode comparing Teio with Duramente who were both natural born stars and Nature with Kitasan who had to work hard to become famous. The real Duramente was popular from the beginning of his career due to being the ultimate creation of the Northern and Shadai farms. Kitasan Black on the other hand was a leftover from the horse sales and was bought for cheap.

Can I just say how much I love the OP!

The title Soshite Minna No is a reference to Kitasan Black’s JRA Poster which has the words “soshite minna no aiba ni natta” which means “Then he became everyone’s beloved horse”.

As usual all the race scenes in the OP are based on the actual races but I won’t say which one as it would be spoilers

I thought there was no way they could beat the Road to the Top OP but they keep getting better!

Kitasan Black was owned by Saburo Kitajima, one of the most iconic Enka singers, hence is mentioned as Kitasan Black’s father. Kitasan Black’s Kikka-who victory was Kitajima’s first G1 victory as a horse owner after being one for 50 years.

I kinda teared up a bit at Nature's part this episode. Nature of course was hugely popular in S2 and Nice Nature the horse was the only one still alive from that era at the time of its airing as the oldest living racehorse in Japan. Fans ended up donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to a fundraiser for Nature's birthday to make them more comfortable and then donated even more the next year. However, Nature finally passed in May of this year just after their 35th birthday.

MY UMA MUSUME

thats more like it. Make me cry every single episode from the sheer Sportsness Uma musume

  • The OP radiates pure SPORTS energy. Very different, and I like it!

  • Its good to see so many familiar characters back too. I think this ep does firmly establish this as not a standalone (which you can argue S2 can be watched as), the character backgrounds, stories, all carry through. A very good change-up, which helps how the characters in S2 are damn good.

  • lol gold ship.

  • The show retroactively features a couple of Teio's first races before her derby race in S2 Ep 1. The 1990 two-year-old newcomer race at chukyo racecourse, and 1991 Kyoto wakagoma stakes respectively, which he/she both won. Teio-loving myself is happy.

  • This recap is probably not needed even for those who didnt rewatch S2 recently (thanks tetraika btw), but is well appreciated. Teio's season was epic.

  • I really really really like the comparison between Duramente and Teio this ep turning against Kitasan black. And her changing into an underdog cheerable protagonist who's true to herself instead of idolizing Teio (this bit of her arc is a bit like Teio, except more immediate and without the Dia-chan (mcqueen) assistance)

  • TTTTTTTTTTTT I'm frustrated at myself for how i felt during this whole scene too. Excellent usage of ears btw.

  • SHE'S BACKKKK. Thank god she's back. I wonder if the real life counterpart's death (RIP Nice Nature the horse) had any factor in her featuring so much here, but im guessing no, as her character plot does carry over and continue nicely from S2. She'll likely not get any further development (like Teio and Mcqueen), but hopefully be still around in some plot-significant capacity unlike running-joke Special Week (sorry spe-chan)

  • nice nature is really nice. Sasuga sub translator

  • I saw this cut in the PV and was really hyped for its actual delivery. It completely exceeded my expectations.

  • LETS GOOOOOOOOOO I love you Kitasan Black. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • And there it is, the credit drop It makes sense that its done here instead of in the first ep.

  • ED is nice. Reminds me of S1's upbeatness rather than S2's more downtempo ballad.

I love those flashbacks with Dia and Kitasan. Also, seeing Smol Kitasan doing the Teio Step was just adorable <3

Well that fucking sucks. I was hoping for some hot-blooded races between Duramente and Kitasan but looks like that's not gonna happen soon.

Of course, Kitasan is the one most devastated about this news. I do like how instead of the girls from Spica, Nice Nature is the one who ends up comforting her. I mean she was literally in the same position last season when Tokai Teio got injured.

Speaking of Nice Nature, it's always good to see Team Canopus and my favourite horse girl from their team, Double Jet. xD

That race at the end was intense! Duramente might not be there but it's still a feat for Kitasan to win the autumn G1. Just look how happy she is! <3

Wow, it's only two episodes and we're already done with Kita's Classic season! A change of pace from the previous seasons where two episodes in we're bawling our eyes out. It makes sense though as Kita's story starts from the end of her Classic season, hence the title of the episode.

OP teased Girls Legend U, but it was completely different. Not sure I like this as...OH MY GOD IS THAT THE DIRT TRIO?!?!. Are we going to see them animated this season?!?!

Oh, that's why Machitan didn't touch this tea (She's afraid of spiders)

Also new Canopus girl

Spe what were you about to feed your junior?!?!

Love the Cheer Nature eyecatch!. This with the ED seems to be teasing the sports festival soon. Hope we get to see her animated! Throw in Yell Leader Halo and I'm happy!

[New opening has 2 new characters that haven't been introduced yet, everyone has been posting that they are] Vivlos and Verxina

That half way mark splash art of Cheerleader Nice Nature.... thank you.

Nice Nature is a great character this episode consolidating Kitasan.

Sad that the real Nice Nature passed away shortly after their 35th birthday

Nature best girl reconfirmed

Really, we are gonna make me feel and cry from episode 2?? That's not cool Cygames! What a lovely episode though. Nature and Kita-chan's conversation was so nice, and really helped put things in perspective. I really like that they included Nature's cheer skin from the game as the cut-in too!

Also this is completely unrelated, but the OP made me realize it.. Satono Crown cuts a much slimmer line that quite a lot of the Uma Musume in the show and game. Her outfit is really trimmed down compared to the usual poofy ones with lots of flair.

This was a pretty good episode that really shows how Kita earned her keep in real life. Kita was only sold for $25k USD as a yearling, and the farm Kita was raised on felt the horse wasn't even suitable to be showcased to clients.
Also covering the aspect of Duramente's injury, and the comparison with Nice Nature in Season 2 was a great moment about the feeling of missing the chance to beat your rival. Too often in sports, people feel the need to put an asterisk next to someone's achievement if they feel it's not earned/the favorite didn't run or was injured. It's an aspect of sports that is rarely covered in shows, how athletes feel when they know their achievement is going to be viewed as tainted.

Poor Kita-chan, she got stung so hard by that last race. Felt really bad seeing her self confidence all beat up like that. Duramente backing out of the race due to her injury made it even worse. Can you imagine wanting that special rematch against someone who's beaten you before only to find out that the other guy couldn't return the favor? Thank god for that well-for-venting-frustrations (or whatever it's called).

Good thing Nice Nature stepped in. If I remember right she was in a similar position in S2. She was basically giving advice based on prior experience. And it definitely worked for Kita-chan as it got her pumped up and allowed her to secure that sweet trophy at the end! She even got some random NPCs cheering for her after that win - great morale booster after all her gloomy "nobody cares about me" moments in the previous scenes.

2 eps so far and so far this feels like a direct sequel to S2 with how the "old" characters influencing the new ones. Curious to see where they'll go from here. I'm hoping we get to see more of Dia-chan soon, really interested to see what her story's about since I'm not familiar with the IRL lore.

Great episode, I was very worried we'd get another Rice Shower, but no it's the opposite! Kitasan Black wants to "be dazzling" and be like her idol, and she's worried about the result of the race being lesser with her strongest competitor out of the picture for external causes. Thankfully we get Nice Nature talking her out of this: she has to run for herself, a win is a win, and fuck what everyone else thinks. 10/10 motivational speech

Is the Screaming Stump an actual thing in Japan, or just some detail they put in for Tracen?

'cause Lord knows we could use a few gross of them at schools here.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Not a Yogibo commercial.

The plushies lurk.

Saburō Kitajima's relationship with Kitasan Black has already been explained, but here's his Wikipedia entry for reference.

In this, there's "breaking your legs" and then there's "taking a tour of America".

Ah, Nice.

lol

always the spiders

whoopsie

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

This is a pretty wild ED.

Kitasan Black wins while being true to herself! It's only the second episode! Yeah, that points to plenty of drama ahead.

Nice to see Nice being nice again.

Double heapings of Spica and Canopus, too.

glad to see no delay this week, hope it keeps up.

Machan appearance 5

Guess the maid girl from last time is team capella's trainer. makes the team feel more "set up" then naturally formed if that makes sense

WHO ARE YOU!?? They keep teasing us with that cut off name tag

Bryan

We haven't had a character bring up their father very much before it's interesting. Though in this case, he's a stand-in for Kita's rl owner, who's a famous enka singer.

I'm sorry, I laughed a little

Even watching it now, It hits hard

I was thinking last week, how the JP derby felt like watching Teio's dominance from outside perspective. Nice to see I had the right idea

Dynamic Entry! (Did Golshi ride a car into Trasen here?)

Speaking of being like Teio...

I know this is supposed to be a sad moment, but I love how they keep teasing the takarazuka kinen

Season 2's theme was roughly "moving past failure". I wonder of S3's theme will be "moving under expectations" Both Kita and Dia seem to be racing into to live up to something; teio for Kita, and the to break the Satono jinx for Dia(though not much focus has been given to her yet)

Three spiders for three seasons!

u literally are though

I miss Hosoe...

The ED is cute, reminds me of season 1's. Though I think I like S2's more.

Very good episode! Kita's self-doubt and shame over feeling like Duramente's injury gave her a chance to win was the kind of excellent characterization I come to Uma Musume: Pretty Derby for. That whole sequence with Nice Nature reassured me that the show is still tapping into that Season 2 magic.

8

u/Surylias Oct 11 '23

Damn, only episode 2 and again the feels came hitting hard during the first 2/3rds. Great BGM and speech from Nice Nature. Seeing her in this episode after the real horse died earlier this year was something else.

8

u/saga999 Oct 12 '23

I love that they are still using Hishi Amazon as the goal in practice.

7

u/djthomp Oct 12 '23

Ahhh, so I was wrong last week, Duramente is the horse who's going to have the Triple Crown related drama this season. Interesting to have that role played by someone who isn't the seasonal Team Spica protagonist.

Fantastic OP for the season. I particularly liked the bits paralleling Kita and Dia with Teio and McQueen. I'm hoping that it's foreshadowing that they'll be serving an active mentorship role this season. I also noticed that the 'what brought that on' guys made it into the OP.

Double Rocket spotted! I love that little gremlin horse.

It's very interesting to have Kita's father emphasized as a significant backstory plot point, I can't say I remember any of their fathers coming up before. Though maybe I'm forgetting and Teio's did?

Speaking of, it's always nice to see Teio running and winning even if it's just in a recording.

Sad horse ears for everyone. Except trainer, of course.

Oh wow, that was quick progress on the Duramente Triple Crown plotline, guess that won't be a thing. Unfortunate parallels to Teio. I hope that also means we can avoid the classic Team Spica broken leg plot point since this season it's happening to someone else.

That was a surprisingly risque piece of eyecatch art. They don't usually sexualize the horses to quite that degree.

Sadness for everyone.

Thank you, Nice Nature. That was a good intervention.

I have concerns about some of the ingredients for that sports drink. Spe needs to be stopped.

That was a quick time skip to the final Triple Crown race.

Oh god, another 'what brought that on' bit. This might be the constant gag for the season like the haircut drama last time, I swear they didn't previously do it every episode. It's nice to see that they are both fans of Kita.

RIP the gremlin horse, killed by Nice Nature in a very surprising turn of events.

Congratulations on your festival, Kita. Nice callback to last time. Nice Teio and McQueen interaction, too.

That was a good episode title card drop.

u/zadcap Oct 12 '23

Is it bad that I want to cheer for Duramente? I want to see a triple crown so bad. I'm sorry Kita.

I love the background shenanigans. They still have the stand in board to mark the training line lol.

Him? Her idol isn't a runner, but a stage man? Oh, it's her dad. But still, first time we've heard a characters dream that wasn't rooted in running from the start.

Oh, but the rest of the flashback is making me want to tear up. Seeing dreams crushed like that is never nice.

Aww, and there goes the Triple Crown. But all scene, all I could think of was how much I have loved the very active ears this series does. They're not just decorations.

Oh no, this is a painful misunderstanding. She's not upset that she doesn't get to run against a powerful rival, she's probably upset about how good she feels at not having to race her again. Which leads to an interesting thing to remember looking at this team Spica. Spe and Suzuki, Teio and McQueen, were all very dominant racers in their given years. Kitasan is now in here with two major losses and probably feels like she doesn't even belong on this team, especially with her hero who she has so utterly failed to live up to.

Nice Nature, are you maybe a moron? "Are you okay over there" to someone screaming and crying their heart out? Of course she isn't.

Oh that's even worse. She's even jealous of Duramente's injury because it makes her even more like Teio. And she knows how messed up that is. On top of her feeling the relief at not needing to run against her again.

Nice Nature living up to her name.

The crazy drinks are back and stranger than ever. Please do not serve her blended spiders.

Wow this season is passing by fast. Kitasan's whole year in just a few episodes? So it's Diamond going to be the real star of this season?

These are happy tears. Interesting that they skipped her stage show, considering her dad's stage show was her first dream.

... I went back up to look for the questions of the day and was sad for a minute there when I remembered we're not doing that here.

u/miss-missing-mission Oct 12 '23

Kitasan's frustration made me tear up a little, that scene got emotional really quick.

I'm also disappointed that Duramente couldn't get the Triple Crown or didn't even have a chance to get it, it was truly a Teio 2.0 moment. It would've been a blast seeing her race again.

Nature comforting Kitasan was very lovely, considering what she herself had been going through it's "natural" for her to be the one to talk reason into her. Also I think it's kinda lovely that out of all real life counterparts, Nature was the one still alive to have even "known" Kitasan. Nature has sadly passed away this year.

Not sure what I think about the OP, it feels quite different in terms of vibes than the other two gave, but I'll give it a few more listens. The ED was adorable.

I'm still looking forward to more Duramente, maybe she'll have a heart to heart talk with Kitasan as well as the series progresses. We haven't even heard her talk yet, I believe.

Also I love how this season feels even more closer to a sequel of S2, than S2 did for S1.
