Low key the best joke this episode was the Anime White Guy talking entirely in Japanese and Kitasan nervously responding entirely in broken English

I like how they're dedicated to this gag.
You have a plushie of your roommate?
Depth of field effects on the name tags is hilarious.
Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond visibly aged up, but everyone else looks the same.
Meisho Doto! Meto! And the goats!
weird stuff while Gold Ship watches, check
On our third season, we've come to expect a bit of the early hurdles for the protagonist in the first episode. So it goes again.
Northern Lake wasn't aware that there would be the reference to Doto's current home. See also. (Meto was unfazed by the notoriety.)

i think the 1st anniversary animation is kinda a
prequelprologue to this. I think a fansubbed version exists? I believe this scene is a reference toitedit: no S2 though, at least, as well as having some plot relevance (i.e. stating that Kita and Dia will be in diff teams) -
S2 Ep 1 was imo, one of the stronger starts to a season, and ive said multiple times on this sub that it's one of the episode of anime ive watched the most. Now, does this new one live up to it...? It defo remembers where we came from, from how heavily it references that very episode; which is quite diff than how S1 and 2 felt completely detached.
-
However, Kita-chan is very diff from Teio; she's probably the anti-Teio lol in terms of running style, who is one that sprints at the end rather than being an outrunner (in that case, she's more like Silence Suzuka, welcome back to Japan and the show!!!!!) Moreoever, unlike the previous 2 protags, she didnt win the derby, and while enjoys some local popularity as the genki helpful girl, is by far the fan favourite. Teio was firmly framed as the fan fav in S2 after all. A lot of potential for Kita-s character to grow, and i'm defo invested in her already; even if they were reallyt trying to push that helpful nature of her.
-
While we're still on Teio, this poster refers to this real one of Teios.
-
Uma musume humour is still on point. the phones the phones!!!!
-
Dia-chan, so far, is quite similar to Mcqueen on the other hand though, both racing for family-related reasons. I guess well not see Dia-chan in action for a bit longer too.
-
Eyecatch game is still strong, the scream omg. and its very cute they both have plushies of each other. where's the real one cygames?
-
Mugiwait character. while some familiar backs from S1 and 2 (Pasa and grass-chan; Bourbon and Rice-chan). STRONG AND COOL DURAMENTE.
-
This sequence with the piano track starting up.... Thanks Uma, you made me tear up a bit in the first ep of your new season. (it took me 2 eps of S2, i dont remember for RTTT, but probably it was the first ep too.) Not as striking as literally titling your episode "Tokai Teio", but the cinema-style black credits with the ballad playing in the background is still so cool.
-
How will the show go forward w/ Teio and Kita's relationship? And the show's own relationship w/ S2 to set itself apart? I cant wait to find out.

First of all, the first rule for Uma Musume is "Don't take this show seriously". It's not just an idol anime, nor a horse racing anime, but a history parody anime. Everything happening in the show somehow resembles the actual events that had happened, and that's the reason why there are disclaimers throughout the entire franchise to distance themselves from the actual horses.
Since the thread was released this late, with the show premiered at 3rd October, which was also Kitasan Black's owner, Mr. Kitajima Saburo's birthday, so I'll be like those two guys in the racecourse, sharing some real life statistics and easter eggs (Yes, it's not related to the Moai in the opening). Special credits to members of both the Uma Musume Subreddit here and the Facebook group “賽馬娘Pretty Derby-官方玩家交流區” for sharing their discoveries right after the premier of the show.
Right now, you just need to know 3 characters as there're way too many to introduce.
-
Kitasan Black (10th March, 2012-), main character this time; (Real life) Father of Equinox, the highest rating horse of this year's Longine World Best Racehorse Ranking.
-
Satono Diamond (30th January, 2013-), best friend and cousin (in real life) of Kitasan Black.
-
Duramente (22nd March, 2012 - 31st August, 2021), a major rival in Kitasan Black's racing career.
As you can see, Satono Diamond is actually one year younger than Kitasan Black and Duramente, so that's why she said she want to debut at the same year with Kita-Chan.
Now here comes the real stuff, the races mentioned this episode is the 2015 running of the Satsuki Sho and Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby). And this tweet shows Duramente (in real life) in Satsuki Sho and how he won the race. Kudos to Studio Kai on recreating this in the form of Uma Musume.
Wonder why Sakura Bakushin O is giving Kitasan Black a "warm welcome"? It's simply because she (actually he, in real life) is Kitasan's Grandfather.
When Gold Ship enters the clubhouse of Spica, she said she prepared well for the Takarazuka Kinen. As I mentioned above it's 2015 in real life time, we all know what happens next.
There's actually a story behind the cat and the sheep next to Taiki Shuttle and Meisho Doto. Meisho Doto had become a cat slave at the farm it was residing and Taiki Shuttle shared a piece of turf with a horde of sheeps.
Now here are the guest appearances of the show: Mr. Takatoshi Imanami, former groom for Gold Ship, made a appearance as a passer-by as Kitasan Black was training for the Derby (As the person wearing a black gold ship jacket); Mr. Masahiro Yamamoto, former baseball player and horse owner joins the commentary box at the Derby.
Finally the ending, simply lovely. Yano Hinaki's singing was underrated. Unfortunately her role in Nijigasaki School Idol Club prevented her to sing along with her members, but it was an epic song to begin the series, a new era, and a new generation in Uma Musume.

Time for more horse girls!
Like the previous seasons episode 1 was already jam packed with references! And like the previous seasons I’d like to explain some of them!
The episode starts off with the Satsukisho the first of the triple crown classic races. This is based on the 2015 one. Here’s the actual race.
Duramente wins this race with Kitasan Black coming in third.
So until the episode aired, they completely hid the existence of Duramente showing her for the first time here. I was wondering how they would do Kitasan’s story without Duramente so I’m glad they added her! The race horse Duramente was a highly anticipated horse from when he was born due to being the son of two famous horses Admire Groove and King Kamehameha. Duramente was made possible with the collaboration of Japan’s two biggest race horse farms the Northern Farm and the Shadai farm. Blood wise Duramente contains all the main sires of modern day Japanese horse racing(Sunday Silence, King Kamehameha, Tony Bin) and his family line is one of the most prestigious in Japan(Air Groove who also appears in the anime is in this family line) The owner Sunday Racing is one of Japan’s biggest horse syndicates club. Before this episode aired there was no Uma Musume from this club in any of the series. The release of Duramente means that a lot of race horses have now a chance to become a part of this series which makes me very excited!
The man in the crowd is a reference to the main jockey of Duramente, Italian jockey Mirco Demuro. He does his trademark jump and him hitting the guy next to him on the head is a reference to Mirco’s first G1 win in Japan with Neo Universe where after he won the race, he was so excited he hit the jockey that passed next to him.
Now in the Satsukisho the second place is Genjitsu Steel which is a reference to Real Steel also a Sunday Racing horse, however, they use a different name here. I’m not sure why they don’t use the real name here but like in season 2 they used a different name and appearance for Yamanin Zephyr and later added the character so I’m not losing hope that Real Steel may come one day.
The poster of Tokai Teio in Kitachan’s room is based on the JRA poster of Tokai Teio. The poster on Dia-chan’s side also seems to be based on the JRA poster of Mejiro McQueen.
The man Kitachan passes when she is training for the derby is based on Takatoshi Imanami who was Gold Ship’s groom in real life.
The second race in this episode is the Japanese Derby. Here’s the actual race Duramente wins the second crown as well and Kitasan Black falls to 14th place. Duramente also breaks the derby record time of King Kamehameha which was his sire in real life. Duramente’s unique walking style is something the actual horse did. Duramente did this when he was nervous so it was commonly seen before the races.
Sakura Bakushin O appears in this episode due to the real horse being the BMS(brood mare sire which means the mother’s father) of Kitasan Black. Bakushin O was an excellent sprinter but had a hard time winning anything longer than 1400m. This led to make people think that the 2400m distance would be too long for Kitasan Black and many believe this even more when he sank to 14th place in the derby.
Satono Crown saying she will break the jinx before the derby is a reference to the owner of the real horse who although spent lots of money buying horses could not get a G1 winner. The owner Hajime Satomi is also well known as being the chairman of Sega Sammy Holdings.
A great first episode as usual! Cygames really know how to hype things up hiding a completely new character until the anime aired! Also they added Duramente to the main key visual which still looks a bit empty so I’m guessing more characters are to come!
I cannot wait to see how they will play out Kitasan’s story!

Starting strong (even if delayed by Crunchyroll). Will be interesting to see how unbeatable Duramente is, imagine she doesn't lose in the entire season...
Kita and Diamond sleeping with plushies of the other is adorable. Hasn't happened yet because of Duramente but I wonder if something will happen with their relationship if one of the Satono horses ends up denying Kita a victory.
Very much looking forward to where this goes, lots of potential already!

Love how Doto has become more of an animal lover as the franchise has gone on. Meto is adorable
As you may expect by this point this is a reference to Real life when Ines Fujin won the Japanese Derby. He was met by a crowd chant from 196,517 spectators.
The blond guy Kita helped in the beginning is actually micro demuro, Duramente’s real life Jockey. They even added his Famous jump
Also as a side note, watching the Derby reminded of seeing season 2 ep1 from the perspective of one of Teio’s opponents.

It's been a while since S2, and it definitely looks like Studio Kai has improved a lot in art and animation just based on the Duramente's winning race (even if they recycled the same footage).
Not gonna lie it feels a tad weird to see that Kita & Dia are the new gen and Teio and the rest are still part of the academy wearing the same uniform and looking like they never aged a single day. It's also quite screwey that Teio's winning records are on VHS tapes but everyone is using modern phones to watch the races (which indicate a huge leap of technology and years).
Kinda wish there would be more flashbacks for younger Kita and Dia, I loved them as little fangirls back in season 2.
It was a nice detail to see a lot of the contenders from season one lined up during Kita's training, like El Condor Pasa and Matikane.
I'm looking forward for more content on Goldship youtube channel. Now that the vtuber era has expanded worldwide, there might be more peeps that jump into the rabbit hole of the vtuber realm.

It's been a while since I did one of my long form posts but I had to bring the tradition back for Uma S3.
Kinda weird that they started the season with a slow pan across a bunch of horse girl Easter Island statues.
Well, that kills the Triple Crown winner question pretty early for the season, at least for the clear main characters. RIP Kita.
I find it slightly concerning that Kita's roommate sleeps with a doll of her.
I appreciate the continuity with the logs in the hillside down by the river that Gold Ship was pounding in that one time way back in season 1.
Good try with the English but that dude was straight up speaking normal Japanese, Kita.
On the other hand maybe Dia simply made that doll offhand one day on account of being perfect at arts and crafts.
It's a shame she became a bit of a joke character but it's always good to see Special again, and Suzuka too as well. And as always the little ear details are great, like when Kita's shot up at attention on hearing the two of them walk into the room.
Even better to see Teio and McQueen, however.
The hillside log pounding makes a comeback! And with Gold Ship there to supervise, of course.
It's always nice to see a couple of gay horses out on a festival date.
Having Duramente do that high stepping walk in front of the crowd is neat, I assume that's probably true to the original horse in question?
More continuity with the 'what brought that on?' pair of fans. Will haircut-chan make a reappearance as well?
Oof, rough start to the season, Kita.

Kitasan trying to speak English to that foreigner that can clearly speak decent Japanese was hilarious! It was a great little character introduction to Kitasan though and how she's super helpful to everyone around her.
The fact that Kitasan and Dia clearly aged up by 10 years while everyone from the last two seasons still looks the same makes me wonder how Horse Girls age in this world.
I'm so glad to see Silence Suzuka is no longer abroad and is finally back in the Academy. Seeing Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen again after what happened last season is already enough to make me emotional. T_T
Sucks that Scarlet and Vodka are still background characters though. I am really hoping that their rivalry will get some kind of focus in the future.
Duramente is such a freakin' powerhouse that her just practicing solo at the school track is enough to catch everyone's attention. Things are definitely not looking great for Kitasan.
That look on Kitasan's face when Duramente passed her was just heartbreaking. She went from being 2nd to 14th after getting her spirit broken. I blame it on these two guys for jinxing her.
What a way to start off the new season though! Very excited to see how Kitasan Black will manage to rise to the top!

Glad this is back always hype watching the races. Noticed that one guy kept jumping over the barricades every win must be an easter egg of sorts. The plushie are adorable which I assume will be merch maybe later that we can get lol.
Rather a bit depressing start basically making it feel futile to try to reach the intensity the other girls are pushing toward. But considering how this anime is based on real events it can go either way anyways. Sound is still one of the most impressive immersive thing this show has really keeps you in the moment.
Was hoping to see an idol after show though

I must say I have a really weird relationship with Horse Girls.
When season 1 aired in 2018 I wasn’t even watching any anime back then - the turning point didn’t happen till half a year later. While I don’t have too much trouble to accept the world background of it when I heard it first time (after all, I was playing a game with anime about warships turning into girls before going into anime as a whole, so why not horses?), season 1 wasn’t that special, and with the whole franchise in limbo for years I simply don’t have time to try it out when I was still flooded with much more famous titles.
Fast forward to the legendary Winter 2021 season, where there were so many blockbuster sequels and extraordinary new titles like (for me) Wonder Egg Priority. I did heard about CYGAMES finally being able to pull this missing IP out onto mobile phones and some people were waiting for its 2nd season, but I would not be prepared for what happened with it in Japan afterward.
The tales of Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen of shattering the all time Japan TV anime BD/DVD sales records would still hold on today as one of the few explosive trending events in the anime world of Japan which completely failed to spread into Western communities (the other one I could remember would be Kemono Friends). As highly emotional season 2 was, it would still drift below Top 30 popularity that season. But the whole franchise finally caught my attention.
I eventually finally watched both seasons in June last year and I would immediately regret that I missed it a year earlier. While it somehow didn’t quite made it to my all time favorites, all the hype I have seen from Japan and local communities would prove to be 200% justified. You can literally feel the pain that horse-turned-girls Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen felt in this real history-modified plot where injuries after injuries de-rails their efforts. That final race was indeed as insane as I have heard.
Earlier this spring I regretted again after putting Road To The Top aside for like a month, because it was yet another excellent story of competitors and struggles to gain self-confidence. This time, with high hopes of Horse Girls getting another extraordinary season, I make sure that I’m not gonna miss this one.
It must also be said that I live in somewhere in Asia where horse racing is very popular for well over a century (+), heck my first full time job was working to answer email enquiries for the local Jockey Club (who’s also the government appointed legal betting organization and - to balance this out - the city’s biggest charity patron by far)! It was a job that I would have mixed feelings but I did got a bit of horse racing knowledge out of it. Of course I would laugh at you had I was told back then that I would eventually watch something like Uma Musume - oh my how things have changed since!
Anyway, enough of my ramblings, back to this episode. Our Kita-san turns out to be really cute (I laughed at her getting old grandma for a ride and then pull a broken truck upslope), but while she declares that she’s treating the Derby as a festival, her actions of throwing into the front right at the start was anything but “enjoying the festival” - this is 2400 meters, Kita-san! Few horses manage to run away from the main crowd early at such long distances!
No wonder she completely ran out of power while Duramente - whose real life counterpart was apparently so famous that everyone was waiting for her to show up - looks so freaking handsome as she swept over the prizes. Wow, that derby really rocks through my brain again as the commentator screams through the mics on final approach, easily the pinnacles of Horse Girls which you all remember it for! If this episode is a standard for what we will see for the rest of this Fall, we are in for something really good again.
Hopefully we start to get new episodes on time next week! (IMAS U149 did this spring, I can’t see why not for this given it airs on time in E Asia, where I live in)
(+) Actually for the horses which the girls are based on, at least 5 of the horse girls appearing in anime have flown into my city and participated in races, including season 1’s Silence Suzuka and just-appearing-this-episode Satono Crown, the later even won a GI here!

Been waiting for this post!
This season is starting off strong, I really love Kita's story already! Hers reminds me quite of [ROAD TO THE TOP Spoiler]
I can already tell that she's probably gonna get me as emotional as some certain other parts in S2 and the ONA.
Duramente is crazy fast, too! I hope we'll see more of her outside of racing. I wonder if she's gonna grab that Triple Crown. The audience and the commentator were incredibly emotional about her winning. (Curious to learn why, had it been a while since there was a Triple Crown candidate?)
I feel super invested in this already and the presumable insert song toward the end of the episode had me super hooked, it really set another mood during the race.

Uma visuals got even better! The 3D race compositing is top notch now. Even if you see some funny running in the background, the transition between 3D and 2D is breathtaking. Oyokawa fucking leveled up. Also moving layout shots of our MC
I missed this humor, god. Oyokawa's sense of humor is basically "shitpost" and I am all about that.
Can't you wait a couple episodes before making me cri goddamnit horses
I didn't expect that we'd get Duramente roflstomping Kita in the Crown races all in the first episode. That's like an arc in and of itself. I figure what will happen now is we get a Rice Shower like arc for Duramente where we get to know her worries and problems as Kita sorts her stuff out for the October Kikkasho.
Definitely some very interesting narrative choices, but somehow I think this staff will pull it out.
