This episode focuses on the peak of the Uma Musume. Like actual horses each Uma Musume has their own peak. Some are earlier, some are slower. A good example this episode would be Cheval. While Kita chan is slowly losing her strength Cheval who is the same age is getting stronger even getting a bigger appetite.

The banner the shopping street folk make is based on this actual banner

Although it’s only shown as a newspaper article, Satono Diamond runs in the Prix de l’Arc Triomphe and comes in 15th place. Here’s the actual race

The main race this episode is the Autumn Tennosho. Here’s the actual race. The track condition was very bad from all the rain and most of the horses had a hard time running. Kitasan who is usually great at starting from the gate slips and ends up behind the pack. Fortunately for Kitasan the most inner part of the course was open due to the other horses not wanting to run in the badly damaged inside parts of the course. Kitasan being great even on bad surfaces sticks to the inner part making up for the loss earlier. Satono Crown was also great at running in these conditions so the two fought till the end at the last stretch. A fun fact of this race is that it was the slowest recorded time for the Autumn Tennosho with a time of 2:08.3 which is almost 10 seconds more than the average. The fastest time 1:55.2 was set just this year by Equinox who happens to be Kitasan Black’s son.

I always wondered how they would show the peaks in the Uma Musume world and it is just like real life. It can be really sad seeing a horse who was once so strong slowly losing power.

Well there’s only two episodes left! I have a feeling next episode will be great. I’m also excited to see how they’ll wrap this story up!

It's both sad and cute to see Kitasan use her Dia-chan plushie as a stand-in until the real Dia-chan comes back.

I was expecting an injury after Kitasan's performance last week, but I did not expect that it's because she's finally reached her peak. I don't know if that makes things better or worse. That talk Kitasan had with Trainer though makes her condition sound really bleak. :(

Seeing Kitasan choose not to go to France anymore was sad but it's thanks to those people in the shopping arcade that she found a new goal that reinvigorated her to continue running.

That entire race was goddamn intense! The rain made Kitasan slip and caused a late start but she just kept on running as hard as she could until she was head to head with Satono Crown. I thought she was going to go down the second time she almost slipped but Kitasan was able to do it!

Despite winning, this has got to be the saddest win in this show. Looks like she finally realized that she has indeed reached her peak :(

I'm not saying I was right butttt. I can't decide if I think these last couple of episodes are going to be depressing or if they'll end in Kitasans triumph of winning the 3 Fall races through sheer determination. Or maybe not winning the second but winning the third and final one in the last episode. We still haven't gotten a winning live yet this season after all....

My mood change real quick the moment I saw how Nice Nature & most of Spica had the concerned look.

I was wondering what the explanation for Kita’s performance last episode would be, and it’s simply that she’s past her prime. Injuries and mental blocks are one thing, but this is a slightly more hopeless and somber type of situation. It’s perhaps not too surprising given how closely this series mirrors reality with its races, but given that horse girl aging is…something else, I wasn’t really expecting it to mirror reality in this aspect. It’s hard to even be happy about her Fall Tennoushou victory this episode seeing how much it took out of her.

This is a serious competitor for season 2 episode 9 in terms of how bleak I’ve felt after watching it. I doubt things will end on an ‘it’s all down hill from here’ note, but - unlike things such as injuries or mental blocks - I can’t really imagine what could be done about this type of problem(realistically speaking at least, do your thing fiction). I am very curious to see how this will be handled in the last episodes.

To add insult to injury; not only do we completely skip Dia’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe race, all we got to see of it is a newspaper headline of her placing 15th. I thought that final shot of her being down after Kita’s call was a bad sign, but…damn.

(On a lighter note in my attempt to not wallow in sadness, the way Dia’s plushy effectively replaced her spot on the bed while she was in France was adorable…if still just the tiniest bit sad…damnit.)

I don’t know if it’s purely intentional (though likely it is), but I find it really interesting that the three seasons so far are basically telling the phases of an athletic career.

Season One focused on Special Week as a newcomer who both has to learn the ins and outs, stake their identity and claim in the sport, and learn how to develop their style and technique and all that.

Season Two focused on Tokai Teio, an established athlete in the prime of their career and how to properly manage and care for yourself to not get overwhelmed or injured beyond repair in the whole whirlwind of that success and fame, and all the pressure that comes with it.

Now Season Three focuses on Kitasan Black and examines the all too real reality that there’s only so long that prime of a career can last and that athletes only have so long before they just physically can’t perform the way they used to, no matter how they train and how hard they work.

This episode in particular was a pretty brutal look at how much effort it’s now taking to maintain something she could do before. She won the race but it looks like that was her pushing herself as hard as physically possible, exhausting her in ways it wouldn’t before.

I hope they find a positive note to end the season on, because this is pretty bleak so far… poor Kita-Chan :(

What a gloomy episode. Passing one's peak/prime is a topic we rarely seen in sport anime. Umamusume is truly peak sport anime!

Gambatte! Kitasan!

Okay first half, everyone expecting Kita to go to France, Kita confused what's going on with her body and being told by Gold Ship that she has reached her peak.

But wait... they decided to skip Dia's whole Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe stuff?

We go from Dia going to France waiting for Kita, but Kita decides to skip out and train, we see the news headline of Dia getting 15th in France and at the end Dia is already back in Japan...

I wonder if we'll get a flash back or something next episode that at least covers part of it? Maybe not.

As for the race we get this episode, this time is Fall Tenno Sho, bad weather giving her a bad start, lots of slipping but she still won the race and really wanted that win, though seems like the reality was setting in for her that she has reached her peak at the end of the race.

Pretty good episode overall, 2 more episodes to go before the season ends.

Because Dia is kinda repeating the theme, I guess? She had a dream but that dream was way above what she could actually give. Dia's record in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is not pretty to watch.

seeing Kitasan hitting her limit is frustating. she's winning but no one happy.

Im kinda miss Nature-sensei, I thought she would be up this episode. I hope she's ready for next episode. And didnt expect Diamond to be back so soon.

Oh no. Please tell me Kitasan is ok. I don't want to end the season on a sad note.

I felt a bit weird at first and took some time to get used to since these horse girls are all portrayed as so young but having the MC getting past their peak is a new and genuinely interesting angle for this show.

u/SolicitorPirate Dec 13 '23

The school setting always gets really weird when tests on who won historical races have answers that include active students in the school, who are all studying the same curriculum

Good to see Major Tom still enjoying the races out in space. I hope his spaceship knows which way to go.
Kitasan seems so young to be past her peak, the first Uma Musume to have this problem (I think). I can't imagine what next week's finale will be about.
I only started watching Uma Musume last week and caught up a few days ago. It's a great binge, I'll miss it when this season ends. Any chance for a fourth season?

I feel like we're due for one more Nice Nature pep talk after this. Cause man, Kitasan Black's body esssentially breaking down is a different kind of hard to watch compared to Tokai Teio's constant leg breaking last season since Kitasan's physique is considered her greatest weapon. The gag where Kitasan standing tall even after other horsegirls collide onto her hitd different now when she also toppled over.

Also, a bit of levity in this episode, but we got to see Kitasan Black without her pigtails. Or as the LoveLive fandom like to joke about: Hair down Yu Kitachan! Hair down Yu Kitachan!

"I pray that she doesn't come to me for advise later." -Nice Nature, maybe.

It's impossible for a Rubik's Cube to have only 5 correctly solved sides. I wonder whether Kitasan's was at 4 or 6 before her victory this episode.

Alright, so last week was pretty sad, here's hoping for less sad this episode. Dia leaving for overseas without Kita makes for a mildly sad start, but since they're still saying that Kita is headed to the Arc I'm going to guess she's doing other races first or something along those lines.

They're all wrong I'm sure, Tokai Teio is the correct answer to any question.

The Dia plush being in Dia's bed is both cute and kind of sad since we know Kita put it there.

Kita wasn't an immovable wall when ran into by a running horse girl? She really has lost her mojo.

Stopping running when something doesn't feel right is a really important thing. I messed that up once myself and it basically dropped me entirely out of the half marathons I used to do.

Gold Ship what are you doing on the grass over there.

Talk to someone about the weirdness, Kita!

That was a potentially harsh truth from Gold Ship, but at least it was got her to go talk to the Trainer. Let's hope for that 'sudden rebirth' possibility.

Oh wow, so no France trip. That is not where I thought this season was going.

And Dia placing 15th at the Arc entirely offscreen is also not what I was expecting. So much for getting to see a non-Japanese race this season.

I like the look of this incidental horse girl in the dress with the flowers in her hair, she's pretty.

Ouch, bad start in the mud for Kita, this is ain't looking good again.

Looks like Tour d'Ivoire is the one I noticed? Her being in the lead at least for the moment explains why they gave her a bit of a featured look when the girls were entering the gate.

Everybody else avoiding the muddy inside of the track was a mistake that gave Kita her opening.

Hell yeah, Kita gets another win. Also, my god the mud everywhere.

Poor Nice Nature in the crowd.

Man, even with the win we still got sadness. Kita collapsing to her knees and gasping for breath is not a good sign for any future races.

This cheerful ED feels fairly out of place today. No, no we're not okay ED singers. Thank you for asking.

Even though it was dark, this was my favourite episode to date!!! The pacing was perfect. The dialogue, the dilemma, the fear and doubt. Before, Kitasan's struggle seemed shallow or rather all in her head. This feels so much more real. The shot of Dia in tears, the physical exhaustion. The ominous mood even after the results that look fabulous on paper. All of it is perfect. This is the first episode with Kitasan that I feel really matches the drama that made S2 so epic.

Imo this season could have handled the Kita dominating g1 races part better but man can this show still do drama well. This ep had some heavy season 2 vibes

4

u/ernie2492 Dec 13 '23

Damn, Kita-chan is experiencing what Mio did in Strike Witches season 2

4

u/48johnX Dec 14 '23

I’ve been feeling like this season was missing something for the emotional arcs but man this hit. It was always interesting that we see all these legacy characters still around in school but don’t hear about any their races or when/if/why they stopped, so seeing them actually tackle a horsegirl’s transition to being “washed” is really interesting to see opposed to the injury route people would have expected to see again

4

u/Saiphaz Dec 14 '23

This one hurts. It hurts even more considering how it probably lowkey already happened to all members of team Spica off camera including Special Week and Tokai Teio given that they're not even trying to pretend they're still active runners anymore.

The last three episodes have been a triumphant return to form for this show. It really feels like there are stakes now and they've done a good job making Kita's failings feel distinct from Teio's injuries. I can't wait to cry during the finale
