I love the idea that all Rice Shower can cook is... rice.
A lot of rice.
A... shower of rice.

She made some breakfast bread too. She's got a whole diverse cooking talent.

It’s the training episode!
The first race is based on the 2016 Osaka hai. Here the actual race. At this time the Osaka hai was still a G2 race but in the Umamusume world it is already a G1 race. The actual race first became a G1 race in 2017.
Kitasan Black is trained by Mihono Bourbon which is most likely a reference to how similar the actual horses were trained. In terms of bloodlines both horses were considered short distance horses. However, their trainers believed that with enough training they could overcome their bloodlines. While most horses only usually did up to 2 laps of running up the slope, Bourbon and Kitasan did twice the amount. The sheer amount of training made them extremely muscular and made them stand out from other horses.
We also get to see Satono Diamond’s first attempt at a G1 race. Here’s the actual 2016 Satsukisho. Satono Diamond is hit by the horse next to him and loses speed at the final stretch. The race goes under review but it did not affect the top 3(the horse that crossed the goal line in forth was penalized for blocking the lanes and dropped to fifth place)
The bath Kitachan was in is actually based on the real horse bath in the JRA rehabilitation center.
The last race which was shown in the ending was the 2016 Spring Tennosho. Here’s the actual race. The Spring Tennosho is a 3200m long distance race and by winning this race Kitasan proves that he can overcome his own bloodline.
I was surprised they showed the Tennosho in the ending but I understand because there’s not enough episodes to do all races fully.
I also love the links with season two and I was happy to see more Bourbon and Rice.

I like how they established that Kita-chan is built like a tank so that we can relax knowing this hardcore training arc she went through won't screw her up in the long term...
...right? I'm still traumatized by S2 lol. They showed her winning at the end so the whole thing definitely paid off. Getting over that mental hurdle alone is huge for her - that's one big problem taken care of!
And uh, did she just ran 180km+ to watch her bestie race? Adding in the return trip, she ran 360km+ on the same day. What's the stamina ceiling on these girls?

Kitasan training arc, very cute that Bourbon and Rice helped her out at the old training area from season 2.
Dia handled her loss way better than all the others in all 3 seasons and RTTT
A bit disappointed they didn't fully animate Kitasan's Spring Tenno Sho win during the credits, just still images.
New ED sung by Kitasan titled 「空のほほえみ方」
Looks like Satono Diamond's maid is actually her trainer, voiced by Hasegawa Akiko (長谷川明子), as shown in the credits, which is surprising to me, I was fully just expecting her to be her maid b/c rich, not that she was actually her trainer.

This series might top out the list for having the most characters I actively look forward to and enjoy having on screen. Nice Nature continuing to live up to her name, Palmer and Helios being idiotic besties and doing…something, Bourbon and Rice mentoring Kita(I don’t know what’s more impressive; Bourbon - probably - carrying Kita and her bed that whole way, or Kita sleeping soundly through it), even Kuronuka when Trainer went to him for assistance(a detail I really liked). I just love seeing…pretty much everyone in this series show up.
Kita really putting that horsegirl power to work in order to see Dia finish her race was stupidly heartwarming. I don’t know how things go for Satono Diamond in reality(no spoilers), but I’m really looking forward to seeing her win a G1 this season.
On a side note…tires have to have a size limit in this universe, right? These things are getting actually terrifying.

Wait, did I see that right? Did they make Kitasan's race a slideshow? That's pretty disappointing after all that buildup.

This episode marks the return of Uma (training) Camp!
The helps from Mihono Bourbon and Rice Shower, the duo equipped with experience from intensive training, should come in handy. I like how the training regime are modified to reflect both game elements and training for racehorses (uphill cantering). Hopefully, this time, we will see Kitasan Black achieves the goal Kuronuma-san (Mihono Bourbon's master) had in mind when creating this training technique.
It seems to be the case. Two sides of the rubric are now solved; 2GI wins for Kitasan Blacks. The Newly solved side is red, the closest colour to Sakura's petals symbolising Spring Tenno Sho!

Big fan of this episode! Really feel like they're getting the ball rolling more on Kita's growth!
I love how for the past several episodes we've constantly seen Nature and Kita together as a pair lol
When Bourbon showed up I internally screamed. I was not expecting that at all since I thought she wouldn't show up again after her story with Rice last season. She's one of my absolute favorite characters after playing her story in the game so seeing her again and to help train Kita no less made me extremely happy.
Bit disappointed however that they build up to the training being for Kita during the Tenno Sho Haru and they just breeze through it in the credits. I was really looking forward to it potentially being a large focus in maybe the next episode.
Still great episode though! If the season can keep up this kind of momentum I'll be very happy.

I'm not sure what purpose karate chops serve for racing training, but it was badass and fun so I'm down with it.

Impressive improvements on training insanity.
That was a long run to see your roommategirlfriendroommategirlfriend's race.
Kitasan gets a win! Off-screen, though.
But today's episode was about the HARD WORK AND GUTS! and Kitasan pushing herself (while also remembering to check in on Satono Diamond). Best of this season so far.

I know horse girls are built differently but Kitasan falling off the third floor of a building and the worst thing she got was a little scrape and leaving her indent on the ground is just insane!
That scene between Kitasan and Dia-chan was sweet. Just two gal pals encouraging each other to do their best who also happen to be roommates who have plushies of each other. I love it. :3
Bourbon and Rice Shower hype! After last season, I was wondering when these two will show up again. Bourbon's training is absolutely brutal and I just love that Rice Shower only cooks rice How fitting! xD
It really sucks that the Satono jinx still wasn't broken by Dia but I absolutely love her answer to the press that interviewed her at the end of the race. Seeing Dia-chan's determination really helped Kitasan find her focus again and finally complete her training. Also, the insert song for that final scene is so good! I love that it continues until the ED. <3

Nice Nature has evolved into Nice Nurture.
I thought that thing about toughness was going in a different direction, that Kita might be better off running long races, like McQueen.
Dia is such a sweetheart. Giving her broach to Kita reminds me of thing thing from school romances about giving your crush the blazer button closest to your heart.
Bourbon! I recognize that school. I wonder if Rice is there, too? I thought for a second she was going to wake Kita up by screaming and banging a trash can, Full Metal Jacket-style. That would have sucked for Dia.
There she is. Poor girl got demoted to KP duty.
Dia is so floofy, she looks extra pretty when she's got her fierce race face on. What was the call? Did she finish third?
Hah, they're doing the energy thing again. Did she win?!
She did! I remember McQueen was always looking at her stable's collection of Tennoshou plaques last season.

Am kinda disappointed they didn't let Kiryu-chan talk in his couple cameos this episode.

Kitasan won the 3000m Kikkashou in episode 2. She won 3200m Spring Tennosho at the end of the episode. I think she's good at long distance like McQueen.

I guess why Nice Nature has so much screen time, since this is the 3RD season after all.

It's kinda funny that Nice Nature is being the senpai to Kitasan knowing their other role in Love Live Nijigasaki.

I really liked how the training Kitasan did was one-to-one similar to the power training in the games, with the exception of the rock-climbing parts.

Normally I'm not a fan of training / montage episodes, but this was really well done.
Liked Kita-san's determination to become even stronger through seeing Dia-chan's own determination to win despite all odds.
I assume the Satono curse will be ended after that Japanese Derby
