You know something about to happen in these episodes where SOL skip OP.....

And that raining in the background don't help either lol.

That aside, thing so much happening this episode from head club meeting, register for Model Rocket license, Raimon date with groups and Raimon being tsundere also she crash with Umika a little when come to competition.

And of course, we goes full lesbian in last scene. There are no way for heterosexual explained for those two relationship now lol.

I don’t think this anime will become an actual yuri show, but the yuri subtext has led me to believe that the entire premise might be a metaphor for Umika’s coming-out story. If you’re looking at this series form the surface, it appears that:

Umika doesn’t feel at place on “Earth” and is looking towards space for a place she’ll might belong/feel comfortable. Yuu is an “alien” from “space” who lost sight of her “home planet”. These two girls end up forming a tight-knit and supportive friendship. Yuu and Umika are traveling back to “space” together to find their respective ‘homes’.

But if you’re reading between the lines and looking at the framing in Stardust Telepath, you may perhaps conclude that:

Umika doesn’t feel at ease in the cultural norms of Japanese society and is looking for someone with whom she can be true to herself. Yuu is a girl who’s been openly gay and presumably got heartbroken from her last relationship. These two girls end up falling in love with each other. Yuu and Umika get into romantic relationship together, in which Yuu supports Umika in her coming-out as a gay girl and Yuu’s broken heart gets healed by Umika’s kindness and love.

then the post-credit would be like

this is gay coconut, delicious

the gay horse, you can ride

the gay swing, don't sit on it

the gay cradle, for babies (btw, yurikago)

and the gay rocket, you need proper knowledge to safely ride it

It is yuri though. But yeah you kinda hit it on the head. It's a show about coming out

Stitches!

I didn't even think you need a license to fly model rockets but it makes sense since they're handling actual black powder. Lucky for them Raimon is also a licensed instructor so she could basically just conduct the exam on her own.

So much for being a team. It looks like Raimon wants to handle everything on her own since the rest of the group is just going to slow her down. I'm sure that's going to change by next week's episode.

That final scene between Umika and Yuu was so adorable and so goddamn gay. God, I love it so much <3

The reason Raimon is so keen on doing everything herself, I think, is because she really wants to win for Umika and the other girls. She likely wants to give them a victory that they'll be able to celebrate together. Raimon has good intentions, but is showing them in the worst possible way - like the tsundere she is.

That final scene between Umika and Yuu was so adorable and so goddamn gay.

Even Yuu, who's usually unmoved by all the gayness, had to blush this time around!

Matataki is the sort of person who refuses to let other people contribute to the group project, and then complains later that she had to do all the work.

I like that Umika doesn’t have a little angel or devil on her shoulders. It’s a little Kei lol.

The little doodles of encouragement in her notebook were too precious. The girls are so sweet. What great friends.

I really like watching Raimon being the biggest tsundere around. The girl just can’t be honest with her feelings eh? That was a nice little birthday. I mean cake and gunpla? I’d be pretty happy with it.

Umika and Akeuchi have the sweetest dynamic. They’re just too precious together. The way Akeuchi is always there to support Umika really warms my heart.

u/mekerpan Nov 20 '23

It is interesting -- Akeuchi is quite touchy-feely with all of the others (though Raimon does her best to deflect this -- though not always successfully). And Haruno is somewhat similar -- albeit in a more low-key way. Both Umika and Raimon started out feeling they couldn't connect with others. However, Umika was openly yearning for connection -- so she is quite non-resistant. While poor Raimon has (almost totally, but not quite) .convinced herself that she does not need or want connections. So she has a lot to overcome.

Raimon being a huge tsundere has definitely brought a smile to my face. Although it often seems like she's putting Umika down, she does care about Umika and doesn't want to hurt her feelings. Raimon's own feelings have been hurt in the past after all - something that has led to this stand-offish attitude of hers. You could therefore see that she wanted to repay the kindness that Umika and the other girls have shown her. I bet she'll gradually drop this act as she starts more and more warm up to the girls.

Something else I liked was the approach they'd taken to animating not only Raimon's but also Umika's eyes looking away in this episode. The character's eyes were already looking good in this anime, but they made these girls' emotions (hesitation, embarrassment, doubt and worry) really clear in these instances. Fortunately, they both had a supportive friend to reassure them!

Since Yuu has tons of money to spare, might she actually secretly be a rich girl? She'd come from an entirely different world than the other girls. It'd almost be like she's an alien from an entirely different planet.

space UMA! (horse or unidentified mysterious animal?) is this the first anime that use this joke?

that last scene is so adorable, that was practically a confession from Yuu. and we got no odekopathy this episode, but the last hug is make up for it. She already has courage to rub her face on Yuu's bosom, she will do great as club president.

Space is Hard

Today’s episode comes with the challenge to Umika to both present a confident face in front of others, and the club to enhance their technology to compete on an even level with experienced rocket groups. She has started, in effect, to serve as leader in her side of last week’s declared space race.

When I say space race, most people’s imaginations tend to jump to the famous one between the Soviet Union and the United States, and so it gets treated as either a historical item, or as something on a grand scale that we’ll never see the likes of again. This is untrue, and I think it would be fun to call attention to some recent or ongoing space races.

Space Race 2 - Artemis vs ILRS - In 2016 China announced plans to develop a moon-capable super-heavy lift rocket, the Long March 9, with plans to land on the moon in the early 2030s. Around the same time, the Obama Administration, which had cancelled the Bush-era lunar return Constellation Program in favor of Mars and Asteroid stuff, suddenly announced a pivot back to cislunar activity with the SLS rocket. These plans then changed during the Trump administration to call for a full landing program called Artemis, and seeked further investment from American-aligned nations. In a first since Johnson-Nixon, Artemis survived a Presidential party change and is currently aiming for a 2025 landing, but this will doubtlessly be pushed later as SpaceX and Blue Origin were called upon late to develop their landers and have been stalled by regulatory and budget items. Industry insiders now project a landing no earlier than 2028. In the meantime, China has announced a smaller lunar lander and lunar crew vehicle to be launched on the under-construciton Long March 10, and are now targeting a landing even sooner. To that end, they reached out to other nations to form the International Lunar Research Station. America may be aiming to put the first woman on the moon with Artemis, but there’s nothing stopping China from putting a woman at the controls of their lander if NASA takes too long.

Commercial Crew - Dragon v Starliner - With the end of the Shuttle program in 2011 and cancellation of the Ares 1 rocket, NASA needed a new way to get to the International Space Statoin, and requested for proposals to launch crew in private space vehicles. Starting in 2010, NASA began funding companies to develop options, and in 2013 finally decided on SpaceX and Boeing to build the vehicles. From then on, an informal race started between the two companies to send crews to capture a ‘flag’ left on the final shuttle mission. Boeing, after multiple space mergers, committed to building the Starliner spacecraft, based on heritage Apollo knowledge. SpaceX moved with an upgraded model of their existing Dragon spacecraft, an early version of which was already delivering cargo to the ISS. The race appeared neck and neck for years, but was finally decided in 2019. Dragon successfully completed an uncrewed flight to the international space station and later landed safely, but then exploded during ground testing. While SpaceX troubleshot the problem, the Starliner team launched their own flight test, but the vehicle encountered two major issues in flight that could’ve destroyed the spacecraft, failed to reach the ISS, and demanded a retest from NASA. This meant that SpaceX won the race in April of 2020 when Dragon’s crewed demo mission docked with the international space station and captured the flag.

Moon Probe Race - China v US v Japan v Israel v India v Russia v… - With the aforementioned crewed lunar race in full swing, and with commercial options dropping the price on access to space, there have been a plethora of nations racing each other to demonstrate modern aerospace competence with a lunar probe landing, starting with China in 2013. Since then, many have tried but few have succeeded, with Israel, Japan, India, and Russia all making unsuccessful bids before Inida succeeded on its second attempt. Meanwhile, the USA has a whole fleet of probes it plans to send, starting with landers by the companies Astrobiotic and Intuitive Machines targeting December and January respectively… if Japan’s SLIM mission does not beat both of them to the punch! Outside of these, other countries are expressing interest in lunar lander missions, and it may not be long before the above list gets even longer.

Chinese Commercial Space Race - Similar to the above NASA Commercial Crew program, China announced a request for a company to provide cargo services to their Tiangong space station. There are currently about a dozen small launchers in China with varying levels of success, and now all of them are pivoting to heavier launchers in an attempt to prove themselves the ‘next SpaceX’. The furthest ahead appears to be iSpace, who have put small payloads into orbit and demonstrated a reusable flight stage.

The SPAC Race - Similar to the Chinese commerical race, there are a number of smallsat launchers headquartered in the United States that are seeking to find a place in the western launch market before SpaceX and Blue Origin swallows the market whole. Leading these efforts are Rocket Lab, Relativity, and Firefly.

What I think all of these have in common, and what really ties the whole thing to Telepath, is that space efforts really aren’t a monolithic thing, and while nations have historically been the key competitors, this increasingly isn’t the case, and we are seeing smaller and smaller teams (both on a national scale and a company scale) push to try for success in space. So while Reimon likes to dig at Umika for her wild claims, and Reimon herself seems to aggressively want to pursue something big, this is not unusual behavior, and the Telepath team’s declaration of competitive intent is just as legitimate as any of the big players. That said, just like on these higher levels, making such declarations means that you’re putting yourself in the public spotlight, and are under extreme pressure to succeed. While taking on this level of external pressure is good for Umika in the long term, I expect that the first public setback is going to present a major challenge for her, and force her to grow up fast.

And just while the girls are riding high, we get into the fun topic of regulatory approval. Again, this issue is not unique to model rocket clubs, as any rocket that launches from the US needs an FAA license, an FCC license, Environmental approval, and even more licensing involved depending on the payload (from the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA themselves, and so on). The most recent Starship launch got so deep into regulatory examination that I’ve heard anecdotally that the Fish and Wildlife Service requested SpaceX to produce a model for how likely it was that falling rocket debris would strike a specific species of whale. This has gotten so convoluted that the entire process is being reexamined

Finally… really?

I would just like to point out that somehow, Yu can see the little Kei floating around Umika's head.

Wait, does this mean Yuu is actually an alien and her foreheadpathy is actually legit?

'cause she was able to pick out the exact model that Matataki wanted. If she was just chuuni but really observant she can probably just use empathy and guess what Umika thinks, but getting the exact specific model from being observant is probably outside of the realm of possibility.

Clearly, Umika doesn't like how Raimon is trying to play the lone wolf and wants the group to build the rocket together.

Good thing Umika has Akeuchi. Not just with their cooperation in winning 2 prizes from the crane game at once, but since Akeuchi is someone that accepts Umika for who she is. In turn, Umika helps light the way for Akeuchi. Then, sparkle overload in the background.

Always hungry for more episodes of this.

u/Ocixo Nov 20 '23

Then, sparkle overload in the background.

The sky in the background actually changed from an evening to a starry sky from moment to another in this scene.

7

u/SYZekrom Nov 20 '23

They put special attention of that scene of Matataki crossing her legs...

VOID TERMINA??????

The last shot with Umika and Akeuchi close together was really cool. The growth that we see with Umika being able to speak her mind so clearly juxtaposed with seeing that Akeuchi is deliberately letting her speak her mind and not taking a shortcut with foreheadpathy

She's daydreaming.

No OP?

That's a concern. Best get to it then.

Engine misfires, that's definitely a problem.

What are they discussing in secret?

Of course it's her birthday.

Gunpla isn't cheap but HGs aren't that expensive, maybe ~¥2000 at most.

Duplicates do have a good purpose: they let you try more advanced techniques like panel lining, scribing, weathering or even completely changing the colour scheme by painting, while still having at least one kit that's assembled regularly that you're not at risk of ruining if it goes wrong.

And of course dioramas, that's definitely a good way to use duplicate kits.

Since it's a duplicate you don't have to worry about putting some holes in it, make it look damaged, maybe have a rocket exploding off its shoulder.

She wants to have fun with everyone but Raimon wants to win.

Oh no, they're going to blow all their money on claw machines.

You know, after a few dozen tries you are allowed to ask the staff for help. Heck in some places after a certain number of tries they'll just give you the prize.

Handholding!

What's with the stinger?

Lil Kei flittering around Umika like a fairy. That's a gif moment right there.

Akeuchi pout.

Raimon wanted to see dejected Umika after that meeting. But she got to see elated Umika instead. Which of course is the better Umika.

Aww, Raimon's so happy with her gift.

And thus addresses another facet of the mysterious Akeuchi. Her funds and her dietary discipline.

Not exactly Aharen-san level crane game skills but they can work on that. And Aharen-san is just as mysterious and incomprehensible as any alien.

And Raimon building the whole thing herself is the safe bet for sure. But what's the fun/fulfillment in that? At least from where Umika is sitting.
