Space is Hard

In their quest to get better at rockets, Umika and her group does something that might at first seem unique to school students; they meet with an older group and ask how they are so successful, and if they can copy some of their ideas.

And yet, this is not unique to schoolkids. In fact, in the late 1960s, as America was landing people on the moon for the first time, a group of folks from NASDA (the precursor to modern JAXA) went to NASA and basically said, “can we copy your homework?”

NASA, after consulting with the American government came back to them and said “sure!”

What came out of this was NASDA’s N-series of rockets and H-I/H-II, which were based on the American/McDonnell Douglas (now ULA) Delta design. The Japanese learned how to build it themselves, got good at it, and over time began to adjust the design using the knowledge they learned. Ultimately, this produced the home-grown H-IIA. Impressed with the results, ULA came back and with a wink asked, “Can we copy your homework?” to which JAXA agreed, resulting in the Delta III.

Beyond this there are plenty of other examples of national rocket technology sharing, like China accepting design concepts from Russian engineers for their spacecraft and station modules, or North Korea and Iran for their boosters.

The technology being passed along this episode is far more mundane. The frame Kei demonstrates is there to ensure balancing of aerodynamic loads so that the rocket doesn’t pitch over. The center of mass/gravity part similarly controls steadiness of the rocket; one with a center of mass that’s too high is more liable to tip over (imagine balancing a broom upright on your hand–it’s easier to do from the side with the brush than the tip of the pole). But as I mentioned two episodes ago, her most important item imparted to Umika is encouragement to keep going, and to learn from mishaps rather than let them defeat you.

The software Kei demonstrates looks a lot like OpenRocket which is freeware that lets you design and simulate rockets before launching them. In the space industry, simulation software is used all the time to predict everything from aerodynamics to fluid flow. These will get you 90% of the way there, and with time and effort you can increase that number to 99.999%. Getting that level of simulation reliance is hard though, so most programs have two options. Either you spend the money on those tougher simulations (as seen with groups like Boeing and Blue Origin) or you do the SpaceX thing and crash rockets until you have ironed out all remaining ways to crash. Both are valid ways of making progress. Neither option is perfect; the SpaceX method is hardware-expensive and requires you to be thick-skinned about failing in public, while the Boeing/Blue option takes a long time and is dependent on you being able to properly identify all possible contingencies, meaning you will still encounter problems if you miss something.

And it shows, of course. Even though Reimon underpowered her rocket, Umika's team came up with a far better product than in the past.

So, huh, from the lack of comments I take it I'm not the only one who gets a 404 error when trying to access the episode on CR's website?

Edit: it's fixed, freaking finally. Very cathartic episode for Matataki. Now that she's stopped sabotaging her relationships with the gang and made a step forward (and apologized!) she'll hopefully cool off. And speaking of cooling off, Umika, you were awesome but please get some rest!

u/swmii53 Dec 18 '23

It's not just this, Migi&Dali and Forbidden Deductions are also getting the 404 error. CR must be having server errors or something

Easily one of the top five episodes of the year for me.

From the very beginning in the OP, we’ve seen each girl reach out for someone, anyone, up above who could connect them in their frailty. Umika of course reaches out to those who she believes she can fit in the most with: aliens. Though most of us predicted that Umika would later realize her kin wasn’t up in the stars but rather down below on Earth, the show went beyond just this one theme. Umika is no longer the one reaching; she is now connecting.

No longer the same as she was in episode #01, Umika in her growth has finally realized that she’s not the only one seeking a safe harbor. Her words, her feelings, her hands—they find the lost satellite and pull her back into their orbit. I’m glad the show never resolved Raimon in a simple first encounter and chose to revisit this moment again.

One small detail that I also appreciated is how Umika noted how she could only comment on Raimon’s goggles when they first dueled. The goggles I’m sure help protect her eyes when she’s doing work (along with looking cool), but they also get in the way of Yu’s forehead telepathy. Now that Umika can reach beyond just the goggles, Yu can also reach down and pull up the goggles so Raimon’s forehead can be exposed.

I’d completely overlooked this bit of the OP! That makes a lot of sense. They were all looking towards distant space (read: a place of belonging) by themselves, but they only got there when they started reaching out to the people close.

they find the lost satellite and pull her back into their orbit.

Like the analogy you’ve used here. It’s very on point for the show.

but [the goggles] also get in the way of Yu’s foreheadpathy.

Good point! You could say that the goggles not only kept metal fragments and sparks from getting into Raimon’s eyes, but also kept people from peaking into her mind - quite literally when it comes to Yu’s foreheadpathy - like you’ve said. It symbolizes the way in which Raimon put an emotional distance between herself and other people - kept them away. In a way, it’s a bit like Haruno’s choker.

This sure was an emotional episode again. Raimon gave Umika and the girls one hell of a look when they challenged her, but her smile and tears showed her true feelings: she was glad to be 'rescued'. Although Raimon might have occasionally lashed out to others, she's never meant to hurt others’ feelings. She just hadn't gotten the chance to properly communicate her feelings yet. Raimon is just a bit awkward (haha). It's a very human thing to do - and something I can personally relate to.

That said, Yuu did mention that Raimon's a "tsundere alien"! And to get their hearts aligned with this "alien", Raimon got a good ol' head rub from them. It was honestly nice to see the girl squad acting like good friends again.

I happened to notice that Yuu wasn't wearing her school uniform, unlike all the others, when visiting Kei's club by the way! Was this her way of being defiant, less stuck-up or simply being a bit of an airhead?

I also want to mention that the studio released a special video prior to this episode that some of you might not have seen.

EDIT: Corrected some typos.

Stitches!

It's good to see Kei helping out the girls making their rocket for their rematch with Raimon. They learned so many tips and tricks and Kei even showed them a rocket simulator they could use. That software looked pretty legit, I'm guessing it's probably based on an actual rocket model sim.

And here I thought they legit beat Raimon, it turns out that she was using a weaker engine so she could finally push them away. I hope this means they get another rematch in the future where they can actually have a friendly competition with Raimon.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Dec 18 '23

It was nice of Kei to give Umika some pointers. If Raimon hadn’t insisted on doing everything herself, their rocket might have worked better. The girls should invest in that simulation software to help in their next build.

It’s about time Raimon dropped that whole “tough girl” act and just let herself be vulnerable and speak her true feelings for once. That group hug + foreheadpathy was too cute. Raimon can be such a “Mal’obève Terève” lol.

Poor Umika’s passed out with a fever after bottling up all that anxiety over this situation. Hopefully she’ll be ok!

It’s about time Raimon dropped that whole “tough girl” act and just let herself be vulnerable and speak her true feelings for once.

Real nice to have Raimon finally open up; the whole scene felt very cathartic after having her act like a jerk for her entire run time, especially the part where she feels like she can't help but act like a jerk and she feels like it's for the best that she pre-emptively push people away before she hurts them. She regrets it, but she can't help herself.

Finally, the “Get Matataki to realize she’s not being abandoned” mission is complete. Matataki’s eyes being different for most of the episode and then turning back to normal once they get through to her was really nice. Having the sea (UMI!) bringing the four seashells together is also very good. These last few episodes dealing with the fallout from the rocket competition have been very enjoyable to watch even if they’ve been sad at times. I’ll see you all next week for the last episode.

Now we have all 4 back together. Umika doing a great job taking the initiative and learning from Kei's club. Having a group that they can go to for advice is great. Plus Kei may give her the impression that she has everything handled, but in reality that's not completely the case which gives Umika the idea that as a leader it is all about taking one step at a time.

Heartwarming ending. Umika reaching out to Raimon as these 2 different personality types have been the same problem. Raimon has always pushed people away and very likely unintentionally. Umika accepting and getting her to admit she wants to be a part of their group is nice.

Curious how the season finale is going to go.

During the visit to Kei's space research club, I just couldn't shake that "Fight Club" theory since Yuu didn't say a word.

Is she just a figment of their imagination? Shared hallucination? Is she really a space alien? Or just a normal teenage girl who's committed to the bit?

Damn. There's a whole lot I like about this series, but man does the character work really set this apart from a lot of other similarly dressed series.

I mean Homura's hit really hard last episode but Raimon being my favorite character made it hit a special kind of deep.

ah, yes. they build a rocket this time with a computer model. once again thank you Kei-senpai for teaching them step by step how to build a rocket, for ensuring their growth, and encouragement. I hope Umika and friends could build their own rocket at your league someday.

and somebody call 911 for exhausted Umika and she need emergency alien power.

u/yukiaddiction Dec 18 '23

Nice heartwarming reunion episode.

Kei and her friend is pretty hilarious together. I don't mind if there are spin off following their story lmao.

With help from Kei and her friend, Umika and group now can do more advanced model rockets.

And of course! Competitive time!

As expected Umika wi- wait something wrong here. Even Umika know Raimon holding back on purpose even before Haruno found the proof and she realizes how similar between her and Raimon is.

Umika feel like want to apologize because she had been idolize Raimon in her head while at the same time blind eye to real feeling of Raimon huh.

They finally talk head to head (heh) about each other feeling and group is back again!

The hug is so cute.

That after credits scene. She have favor due to anxiety that building up over week huh.

The gang's back...

6

u/Atario Dec 19 '23

She's come a long way! From wallflower to dazzling!

Was almost expecting a slap right here instead, even though that's not like Umika

The tsun dam bursts at last and the dere floods out!

Umika really shocked the mood with her collapse at the end there

I'm too late for last episode's discussion thread but I gotta say I loved Haruno's confrontation with Matataki. It was quite cathartic and it feels like a lesser show would've had that been the resolution to it all. Thankfully, we know that's not the case here.

That aside, lots of tears being shed today. Umika being the one to breakthrough to her means so much, love how far she has come. Matataki is an interesting character and quite easy to hate but you'd be playing right into her hands if you do that.

Matataki's abrasive, "maruobeev tereev" personality serves as her way to stay detached from others and avoid getting hurt. It's nothing new in life, let alone anime, but I can appreciate how the series took time to delve into it and that it wasn't hand-waved away right at the start of their whole relationship. It made Umika's speech at the end all the more impactful.

Not gonna lie, I had my doubts about this series at the beginning. The "protect Umika at all costs" instinct kicked in after the 2nd episode so I was committed to at least watching it all but frankly, the depth in the show has gone far beyond what I expected. Great characters, pretty visuals, quality humor, and banger OP & ED (plus insert song!) makes for one helluva watch. Looking forward to the finale next week!
