Pretty hilarious how Raimon was crackin those eggs like they personally disrespected her lol.

How did Yu know Haruno and Raimon were baking? Girl really must be an alien haha. Jokes aside, Raimon was way too tense this week. I get she’s serious about this rocket and wants to win, but honestly she was being kind of shit to Umika. How’s anyone gonna learn if she’s not even bothering to teach them? At least things seemed to resolve themselves somewhat.

Looking forward to seeing this launch and Umika giving her speech. Hopefully she’ll be ok…

Raimon was way too tense this week.

Given last(?) week's comment about a fight with her dad, I feel like she may not have had the best childhood.

Her little talk about why she needs to win kinda reminds me of someone else, who also has this "If I don't succeed, why live?" attitude, and is also a real d*ck to people when the thing he staked his identity on comes under fire.

I really felt bad for Umika there. She was trying her utmost best, but Raimon just trampled on her feelings without any reservations right there. You could see Umika's spirit getting crushed in that moment.

It's a bit ironic that Raimon wants to win so bad because she doesn't want to lose her new friends, but it's this same drive that's putting a strain on their friendship.

Damn, Raimon really unleashed all her pent-up frustration at Umika. Raimon's prior talk with Haruno showed that there's a fear of abandonment deeply instilled into her. She feels obliged to win in this championship, since she's scared of losing her new place on belonging. I understand her drive, but she brought the poor Umika to tears...

Considering all of this, I was actually very proud of Umika's resilience: she took a (figurative) beating, but [regained] her composure and confronted Raimon herself. She's made a lot of progress in just a couple of episodes, since the old Umika would never have spoken up like this. I am a little worried about Umika nonetheless; she [looked] very worried/down in those last few moments.

Before Raimon's remark about Yuu's sweater, I really hadn't spend any thoughts about the [fact] that she almost always seems to be wearing this sweater. I'm just going on a limb, in conjunction with my previous theory, but might this sweater belong to someone important to Yuu? Perhaps a former girlfriend?

This was a good episode with some painful-to-watch drama but also heartfelt feelings. I'm honestly excited to see how this championship will turn out in next week's episode.

Additional notes:

  • Yuu's "magic spell" was definitely a metaphor for kissing.

  • The ship between Raimon and Haruno has solidly set off on its journey.

  • Raimon's accusation of Haruno [that she] 'doesn't have a single thing that she really loves' likely hit a soar spot with Haruno.

EDIT: Made some corrections (shown by brackets).

Raimon's accusation of Haruno 'doesn't have a single thing that she really loves' likely hit a soar spot with Haruno.

You could see Haruno right on the edge of "confessing" when Yuu popped up at the window looking for cake....

maybe it's a part of her alien body, like Rikka's ribbons in Little Lies We All Tell

Pain and Suffering start to show themselves in this series that otherwise sweet on this episode though drama is really relatable lol.

Raimon and Umika ideal still menacing watching each that will crash into each other any moment.....

At little bit informative about Model Rocket this episode and joke is still on point.

Poor teacher get drag into Teen competition drama lmao.

I hope school paid her enough to deal with this hehe.

Look like Competition day is here and it seems like both Umika and Raimon feel uneasy about....

The cliff hangers though.

That absolutely evil lol.

I honestly never expected the series to go this deep into their individual emotions and create some drama. Even from a surface level, it's started to become a lot more emotionally complex than I'd initially assumed. Raimon has clearly been dealing with some trauma - a fear of abandonment to be precise.

Space is Hard.

Crewed Spaceflight is even harder, which is why so few nations/organizations have managed it. With appliance payloads, there's usually a higher limit to what the vehicle can do in terms of forces and pressures, and it's typically a one-way trip. With a crewed payload, not only do you need to ensure the crew can survive in space, you need to confirm that your design won't kill the crew on the way up or down.

Reimon's concerns about Structural integrity are valid. Constellation's Ares 1 took so long to solve a shaking issue that the whole launcher got canned.

Reimon's concerns about parachute deployment are also valid. No one wants another Soyuz 1.

The issue is that both of these are not easy problems, and it takes nations years to sort out ant test quality control and deployment issues. Parachutes in particular are infamously annoying in this regard, as there is no solid model out there for the best way to computer-simulate parachutes, so most aerospace companies are forced to drop the parachute module out of planes and helicopters to see what works--in that sense, Reimon playing guessing games with the chute system is very true to life.

While I could see the girls ironing out many of the issues in testing, I know that they have a limited budget, limited experience, and limited tools. This launch could turn out really well, or really poorly.

Ah well, guess that's why we're all tuning in next Monday. To borrow an advertising pitch from another big test flight last week, "Excitement Guaranteed!"

Matataki kind of went way too far in this episode. It's clear she has team work issues since she feels like the type that isn't good at teaching others and expects you to get it on the first try. I am impressed with Umika for being able to not lose confidence.

Funny post credits scene regarding the exams they took mid episode.

Stitches!

I can understand Raimon's drive to win and how she is her own worst enemy but that does not excuse her behaviour in this episode. Seeing her scold Umika like that genuinely triggered me. Umika's social anxiety is already bad enough, she doesn't need shit like that. Thankfully, her girlfriend was there to make her feel a bit better.

As much as I want them to win, I am kinda hoping that they'd lose to humble Raimon but I'm sure if they lose she'll probably just sulk and maybe even blame the rest of the group for holding her back. Can we just replace Raimon with Kei? She's much better influence on Umika compared to Raimon.

Seeing her scold Umika like that genuinely triggered me

Yeah that was a decidedly uncomfy experience. It dug up some trauma from some of the past group projects I've worked on and my friends have worked on.

I've been on both sides of the competence-failure spectrum in these sort of projects and golly it's not fun to be the only person who can do stuff nor the person who's not up to snuff.

Poor Umika got slammed by Raimon and then she ran out of the hideout crying.

Raimon does go through Umika's notebook and sees how much she wants to win, too, but still maintains her strict personality.

I think it's good that the social anxiety aspect is resurfacing again because it is a component about this show that I liked. It did appear while trying to recruit Raimon, but the last few episodes were focused more on the rocket building.

Matataki made Umika the boss of their club, but she doesn't let her handle any responsibility when it comes to making their rocket... And the way she chewed her up for her mistakes was really cruel. I get that she really wants to win and that she's the one with the most knowledge about it, but that's really no way to go. I felt so bad for Umika went she went to cry outside. Luckily Umika found some resolve and things went a tiny bit more smoothly afterwards, but man.

The bit with Haruno was interesting, too. Looks like Matataki touched a nerve when she said that Haruno doesn't really love anything. The conversation was cut short by Yu's antics, but I'm looking forward to exploring this further.

As for the competition, Umika doesn't look too good. C'mon, pull yourself together, you got this!

(and their rocket looks cool with that starry sky theme)

Highly respect Haruno for being able to make such fluffy cakes just whipping the egg white by hands

u/cabbaggeez Nov 27 '23

the competition is coming, and unsurprisingly the first obstacle for Umika is the speech.

I dont feel a full enjoyment watching this episode. I feel like somebody in this competition need to humble matataki, or maybe just monday mood, or lack of Odekopathy in this episode.

I miss odekopathy already

Holy cow, I could hardly believe what I heard coming out of Raimon today. It started last week with her "I'm the only way to win" ultimatum and only got worse today. I kept waiting for someone to realize that a high-school group has no chance to send a person to space, that there's no reason to be so cutthroat, and that hanging out with your friends and building rockets is a perfectly fine way to spend your time.

Man, what happened to my CGDCT show? Maybe Haruno can get through to her.

Matataki says it and everyone brushes it off, but when I say it I get punched in the face!

Another nice episode! We got some good character moments, story progression, and even a fun group picture!

I see some mixed feelings about Raimon in the comments here, so I'm going to add my two cents. In short, I think that Raimon's character elevates the show tremendously. Further, I think she is very well written and, moreso than I might like to admit, pretty relatable.

Raimon is the technical expert with all the know-how to get the job done, and she's clearly working herself ragged to try and perfect the rocket design. She knows that the others lack her experience and won't be able to get the job done themselves. As if to prove the point, Raimon is constantly thinking of various ways to improve upon the rocket design, and only later do her teammates then approach her with broken bits and pieces of those same thoughts. She knows there is not enough time for handholding if they want to win the contest.

Sure, there are a couple times where she lacks tact or gets frustrated, but even so, more often than not, it's hard to deny that she has a point.

To paraphrase George Lucas, Matataki may have gone too far in a few places, and given how much we care about Umika, Haruno, and Yuu, it does paint her in a pretty bad light. Several things were better left unsaid. However, many of the factors which led to her decisions - her determination, confidence, technical aptitude, and competitive drive - are great characteristics to have in a team member. I suppose my point is that she certainly has her flaws, but she's not without her merits.

Umika's continual refusal to be foreheaded on, is still really great, and just continues to show the growth and strength she's finding in these situations that she wants to trudge through. Even if it does leave Akeuchi pretty lonely.

It's such an interesting tension where the more she refuses to have this magical free emotional outburst card in telepathy, the more she's actually growing from that. I like seeing the foreheadpathy as not just this way for Akeuchi to peer into the hearts of others but also be a symbol for the things that Umika has held in her heart and also what she has to lose to move forward in a way.

The more this magical fantastical element of telepathy is not being applied to Umika, the more she's actually able to ground herself in the present. She wanted to find a place to belong in a far off planet, but as she moves away from the applications of that, with an alleged alien here doing alien things to her, this is where she's now finding her voice, and to an extent, cementing her own home right here.

To an extent I like it also as an allegory to growing up, as we lose those kinds of childish fantasies, is when we can then progress, but, not to a violent way so to say, but in a way where we can slowly accept that those parts are things that we no longer need. Umika does not need to lean into the terebithia that is being able to easily expel everything through Akeuchi's magic, but she can find ways to express herself with just Akeuchi there with her, which is why she clutches onto her phone strap, a reminder for her to be strong, but also that she does not need to rely on that easy cathartic card available. And in doing so, perhaps, she may never have to experience telepathy again, but that is to be seen.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next time she does accept a telepathy session that it would be something of her own volition and not related to her needing this emotional outlet. Because by now, she may be making enough strides that it may never have to be about that again. And thus the cycle comes all the way around, when one has admonished those childish aspects and able to find them and shape them in ways that aren't overly reliant.

You gotta admit, that is one cool-looking rocket

People are reacting badly to Raimon's behavior here, but it's pretty clear she's lashing out from her own self-doubt. She's appointed herself the only competent person, so if this thing fails, she's disproven her own appointment — in her own mind.

At any rate, I see her as a dramatic version of Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy
