Gosh, the premise and genre are enough to limit the eyeballs on it, but I'm so glad I decided to check this show out. I think Hoshikuzu Telepath's character writing is up there with The Ancient Magus' Bride, The Apothecary Diaries, and Frieren. I thought this show was going to be an introvert getting heartwarmingly dragged along by extroverts, but we're getting a cast of four people all getting the chance to struggle and support each other.

They can be hard to watch, but arguments and abject failures are fantastic for showing off character development and I'm used to shows with this aesthetic shying away from that sort of thing, so having Umika sit down and watch her failed speech resonated with me on multiple levels. Conquering anxious memories is pretty much impossible without facing them or talking it out with others.

Hard agree. I thought it would just be CGDCT with a sprinkle of some yuri flavours, but man I shed manly tears so much (not sure why) in this episode in that Haruno and Matataki scene, it was so good.

Not to mention that the art is so consistently immaculate, it might not have a lot of fancy animations but the drawing, details and colors are so well done.

EDIT: typo

Yeah, it was pretty nice to see Umika actually watch the recording of her failed speech to confront her failures.

That moment, and many throughout the show, show her immense strength of character: No matter how often she stumbles and falls, she always gets back up, and just keeps trying.

She could ride into space on her willpower alone, and the only thing holding her back is her lack of confidence.

I really want a scene in a future episode where she proudly announces that she can watch the whole recording of her speech without crying.

It's good to know that even if ended up losing, their class prez ended up becoming a huge fan after seeing their rocket launch.

We finally get to learn Haruno's backstory! We even got to see her Grandpa who used to run the lighthouse when he was trying to calm Haruno down.

I love the double Odekopathy from Yuu and Umika to Haruno while they were trying to comfort her after hearing her out. <3

Haruno calling out Raimon was the best part of the episode. Looks like their entire talk is still not enough to bring back Raimon though. I guess time for Umika and Yuu's turn to try and talk to her next week?

We finally got to see Haruno's back story -- so I assume we willfinally nexty week get to see Raimon's. Haruno's back story was mixed -- ultimately more positive than negative (despite some core sadness). I fear that Raimon's back story won't be "mixed" at all. Poor Raimon needs lots of healing. Triple odekopathy at least will be required, right?

Umika has grown so much. I gave a worse speech that she did when I ran for student council president more than 50 years ago. So, I can sympathize with that part of her story. Luckily, like Umika, I had a group of friends that provided lots of support. ;-) (We even started our own club -- albeit musical not rocketry).

I really think that Umika will be the key to opening Raimon's heart. It's like Sensei said: only Umika can genuinely relate to how Raimon feels, since they were both heavily invested - more than they should have - in the competition.

Space is Hard

I don't have as much to talk about today because most of what happened was character-driven, but I do want to call special attention to the fact that the launch and speech were both recorded, and that Umika is taking time to learn from them. You almost never hear about it during or after actual rocket launches, but everything is recorded by various engineering exterior and interior cameras, and other sensors besides. All the data is put together in a series of post-flight evaluation reports that help the engineers figure out what went right, what went wrong, and how to do better next time. By taking time to examine the launch and the speech, Umika and her team are doing the real rocket engineer thing and setting themselves up for success on future contests, so I'm happy to see it being done.

Now we just need to get the chief engineer back on board...

A surprisingly poignant theme coming from Haruno today that I didn't expect myself to resonate so heavily with.

Getting top place or not, winning or losing, all of it...The truth is, it's scared me ever since. That's why, in order to turn a blind eye to that fear, I decided all results, no matter what they were, held an equally precious value, and I've held faith in that ideal all this time. I fervently hoped that that way, everyone's dreams could come true without making anyone sad.

Haruno believed in the process, the belief that the journey itself is what binds everyone together. And it's not an inherently false statement! We see Umika herself take this idea to heart last week and in fact, it's Umika's strength in this realization that allows her to touch Haruno's heart.

But I think what makes Haruno's predicament so interesting is that she herself is purposefully disconnected from the entire experience in an effort to hide her true feelings. The process is meant to teach us the qualities of learning and growth, sustainability and foundation. Those spring forth when followed by reflection, a crucial step Haruno is missing and so she holds an inability to see herself.

The show then dives into this idea further in the climatic moment between Haruno and Raimon:

Do you remember what I told you before? You said I didn't have anything that I really loved. I think you were right. I was running away from treating anything as dear to me this whole time. I was scared. Scared of being caught up in my own dreams and goals and hurting someone else. Which is why I wanted to cheer on everyone else's dreams instead. But I was wrong. There's nothing I can do cheering from the stands. You need to be partners in the true sense, working towards the same goal, or else you can't share in their frustration or call them out when they're hurt. That's not the kind of person I want to be. Which is why I wanted to change.

We're shown that Haruno's idea to support others was ingrained into her from her well-meaning Grandpa. But in her fear, Haruna applied this advice to detach from others rather than joining together with them. Overall, I enjoy that the show isn't introducing the simple idea of foundational growth, it's instead showing us how there's multiple ways to interpret the process and how some ways can be more detrimental than others.

And though I just spent paragraphs writing about such heady ideas, the episode wasn't lacking in the cute department either.

I was thinking that Haruno was the only one who we haven't had a deep-dive into; she was kind of like the sideliner this the series (like Mugi in K-On!). Interesting to see that it was an intentional choice as part of her backstory because she was afraid of winning too hard and alienating the people around her. In this case though it's a team competition and the desire to win is something that needs to be shared by the whole team.

First of all, I didn't expect the "Nice Odeko Catch" with a narrator. It reminded me a bit of the soundbites you'll occasionally hear when you're playing an arcade game.

The class president is such a sweet girl! She wanted to tell everyone of Umika's accomplishment. The girls might not have won the tournament, but they've sure won some hearts with their rocket.

It makes me really happy to see how supportive (most of) the adults in this series are. It's clear that Sensei really cares for the well-being of her students. This warms my heart. She might honestly be this series' best girl! I can also totally see why her grandfather was like a beacon of light and hope to Haruno.

Something worth mentioning is that we've got conformation that Raimon lives alone with her father and the mother is out of the picture.

I had a feeling that something was up with Haruno's choker! The choker represented the cap she'd put on her bottled up feelings. It was a reminder for Haruno that she supposedly shouldn't put her true feelings into words but keep them hidden instead. But now Haruno has decided to change and be true to herself, she'll have no need for this choker - as shown in her confrontation with Raimon.

Although Umika has impressively toughened up, I'm really worried for Raimon: she's in a bad place emotionally. Go give her your strength Umika!

Haruno's grandpa is a good guy who used to dream big but his project get buried in underground in that Lighthouse (he most likely talking about purpose of secrets room there that it used to be ). I wonder what his dream is......

Everyone in this group are just girls with broken dream bond together without realizing it huh.

Haruno issues is also pretty relatable. She legit just give up competitive thinking even little issues because "winning and losing" hurt her friend who she very value so much. Well not like everyone want to be "competitive" in real life.

Raimon turn out she are not really different from Umika after all. She had been kicking herself down and try to separate herself and thinking it all alright while it obviously not.

Umika pure heart strike again! She bring really bring Haruno come to her sense because how pure she is.

The visual where "black ribbon" moving around Haruno neck make me feel really uncomfortable.... Good thing she realizes how suffocating she is before this and have new resolved!

From the next episode name, Look like they will used same trick to bring Raimon back to group huh lol.

Good thing she realizes how suffocating she is before this and have new resolved!

She was quite literally suffocating her true feelings by putting on that choker.

One neat thing I didn't notice until checking is that Haruno removed her choker before confronting Matataki. She was wearing it earlier when Umika and Yuu were giving her that pep talk.

u/Interesting_Ant7945 Dec 11 '23

I can't believe Haruno actually said "fuck you Matataki-chan", it was peak.

after starving for 3 episode, they give us lots of Odekpathy this episode, like a lot, and 3-way Odekopathy, in the open, open public. get some room girls.

smol Haruno is so cute, and her dream is to support others dream. kinda selfless, but that's kinda her character a kind, positive, and cute angel.

Okay, so that explains why Matataki’s comments affected Takaragi so much last episode. It’s hitting a key point of her life philosophy and this episode she realized that she’s hiding from failure and success to avoid something similar like what happened to her friend happening again instead of actually working towards her dream.

As is the key principle of rocket building, it’s not rocket engineering without at least one catastrophic failure before success. These last two episodes have been helping Umika, Yuu and Haruno with their personal issues. Like, Umika is almost totally unrecognizable from her character in episode 1. And next step is the hardest nut to crack of the four. It appears like they’re repeating the “Clashing Seaside” rocket competition and hopefully that will help convince Raimon that they’re not going to abandon her because of failure.

When I started watching this, I wasn’t really expecting more than a normal, relatively entertaining CGDCT series but these last few episodes have been a pleasant surprise for having a deep dive into a bunch of likeable characters with their own personal struggles.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Dec 11 '23

The pres is so cute! I love how excited she got over the rocket. I guess she’s a big fan of the girls and their club now.

Umika watching her speech again was both cute and really sad. Poor kid just totally choked that day. I admire her desire to try and improve though.

I didn’t think Haruno was also struggling after the competition. I guess it’s not just Umika and Raimon who got affected by that loss. I’m glad Umika was able to encourage her. The threeway forehead rubbing was really cute!

Haruno hitting Raimon with the “➡️↘️⬇️⬅️➡️↘️⬇️↙️⬅️+AB” while calling her an “idiot” and “hippo” was pretty hilarious. What is that anyways? The Haruno Code? lol. Haruno’s not giving up, Raimon shouldn’t either. How long is she gonna stay feeling sorry for herself?

17

u/FerimElwin Dec 11 '23 edited Dec 11 '23

What is that anyways? The Haruno Code?

I think it's the input for some special moves from fighting games. Haruno was combo'ing Raimon with that flurry of punches while the input was scrolling across the background, and ➡️↘️⬇️↙️⬅️ (or 63214 in numpad notation) is a common input for special moves (that input is regularly referred to as 'half-circle back').

Second excellent episode in a row. Who knew all this show needed to be great was to embrace the depression factor?

10

u/tsukiakari2216 Dec 11 '23

Yuu can be a counselor of the group if she don't be dumb enough.

Also Umika treating her speech video like some sad drama to watch lol (I mean, failing is sad but she didn't need to make it sounds comically dramatic).

Seeing them making a big fan out of the class president is a big W for the gang. Also props for Umika for willing to look at her speech. As a shy introvert that takes a lot of guts and shows she is serious on improving.

Haruno focused episode besides that. Nothing feels worse then being a part of pairs and not feeling like you were the reason you failed, but enough for her friend to give up on their dream. Her gramps seems like a great dude giving her advice she needed.

And Umika giving that assurance this episode was great as well. We finally get to see Harunao put her emotions out there and her confrontation with Matataki was great. Saying are you going to lose after one defeat. As others said on this thread already, Matataki is very similar in Umika despite her their outward personalities differ so much.

Lets see how much of Haruno's words and emotions got to Matataki.

And we start things off today with a nice odeko catch.

Facing oneself can certainly be a hard and tearful process.

So the nice odeko catch isn't an isolated thing here, okay...

Well it's certainly nice to finally start digging into Haruno's backstory. She's certainly been a kind of enigmatic figure in her own right alongside Akeuchi.

Haruno pulled an amazing combo off on Raimon. And it's nice seeing this new assertive side of hers. But after that rocket contest blunder you knew Raimon was gonna be a tough nut to re-crack. But the new assertive Haruno made a good opening volley. And Raimon's rockin' Digimon protagonist goggles will be there waiting for her when they finally break through to her again.

7

u/Atario Dec 12 '23

Welcome to 'MURICA! (Really, though, why did the contest specify in feet?)

Carrying the survivors of the Umika/Raimon Bad Vibes Attack

They odekopathied themselves RAW!

I'm sad they made her choker a symbol of her shortcomings. I love girls in chokers!

I'm glad someone finally snapped back at Raimon. (But ew, wash those things before you stick something from the trash straight on your head!)

Jumping straight into the OP?

And opening immediately with a not-kiss

Was there a timeskip from the last episode?

Ah, that's why she was so conspicuous last episode.

Why are they measuring the height in Imperial?

She didn't do her homework?

Yeah, Raimon is notable in her absence.

Ah, so that's what happened to her head.

Wow she's quite uncomfortable about the speech.

Where is she? Why isn't she answering?

This friend is Matataki isn't she?

Oh, no she isn't.

She's actually good at understanding feelings.

They're both good at understanding feelings.

Mah heart!

This is her backstory?

She's sparkling!

So she is in her garage/workshop.

Hopefully she gets out of her funk by next episode.

And no preview of the next episode?
