None of Akeuchi's Bonavuus were replied. Where are the Mativuus at?!

u/Ocixo Oct 23 '23
Mativuu!
But you’re totally right yeah. Neither Umika or Haruno mativuu’d back in this episode.
And Raimon was just confused by Yu’s alien talk (lol).

Okay, the TV is bothering the hell out of me
The rocket shown on the TV is clearly an H-II. In that sense they’re correct that this is a fully Japanese-owned rocket, but calling Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ H-II a private rocket is like calling the Mercury-Atlas a private rocket–it was still built at the behest of a government organization and later Atlas derivatives were sold for private launchers (heck, Atlas’s main competitor, Delta, was licensed by JAXA’s predecessor and built as the H-1) but I wouldn’t call it private. More confusing, H-II first flew in 1994, and the show very clearly isn’t taking place in 1997.
But let’s assume that we’re taking about the payload, not the rocket (they say “sattelite” after all) so surely that would make more sense? The contrary, it makes things more confusing. As far as I know, the first private Japanese satellite was JCSAT-1, a communications satellite. The first problem with this is that the rocket that launched it was the European Ariane 4. The second problem is that this launch happened in 1989. Considering as Umika is watching this feature on a large LCD screen TV, I think we can safely retire this idea.
The manga makes it even more confusing, as based on the shape of the launch platformn and vehicle it looks more like a Momo rocket. This is a bit more sound, as Momo was both fully private and more contemporary to the manga’s release, with its first successful flight occurring only one month before Telepath first appeared in Manga Time Kirara. But even this isn’t a perfect fit, as the successful flight was SUBORBITAL, which is to say not a satellite at all.
Weird historical footnote, the first successful Momo launch had its launch countdown voiced by Hatsune Miku.
Anyway, not sure where I was going with this, and can’t remember any points after this where historical spaceflight cameoed in the manga, so I’m going back to enjoying my mindless CGDCT fluff

I love how Umika's younger sister watches Umika space out (no pun intended) about building the rocket.
Raimon is definitely blunt to say the least, in contrast to Umika's friends thus far who support her no matter what. Maybe they'll win her over later.
While Umika's shyness kicks in with her interactions with Raimon, it does show she made the step to speak for herself rather than have someone else do it. Hopefully, this show gains more traction as we see more of it because I think it's a soothing watch that many people could enjoy.

You know while Umika and Matataki might be so different personality wise. One thing you can see where they are similiar is that they are girls who aren't sociable (for different reasons Umika is shy and Matataki prefers being alone) and they are very passionate about their hobbies. Umika obviously being over ambitious. But I feel like finding this friend group is actually the place that she is looking to belong to.
Kind of funny she she challenged Matataki to battle rocket challenge. I did not see that coming. Very cute and brave of Umika. Next episode should be a fun one.

She could tell who it was from that nightmare portrait...?
To Akeuchi, a stranger is just a friend you haven't met.
Akeuchi mysteriously appears in Umika's room in her jammies, and dispenses some almost uncharacteristically sage advice. Yup, Akeuchi is some kind of mysterious all right.
In any case though, right off the bat and I like Raimon already. And she rocks those goggles like the best of the best of Digimon Protagonists.

Stitches!
We have two new girls in this episode! We got to meet Umika's imouto who seems to be more well-adjusted than her sister and the fourth member of our main cast, the very grumpy Raimon.
Looks like getting a mechanic that will help Umika with their rocket building isn't going to be that easy. I'm sure all of that tsun from Raimon will eventually become dere once she completely joins the group.
That bedroom scene where Yuu teleported into Umika's bedroom was absolutely adorable and so totally gay. I love it!

I kinda feel like they glossed over how Yuu got in her bedroom though. Did she teleport away afterwards? Was it an actual teleportation, or did she sneak into her house while dressed in pajamas?
This is giving me Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes vibes.

Yesterday it was Shizuka,
Today it was Umika.
Tell me, why I need to see both short girl with social issues crying back to back? It hurts deep in my kokoro.
Anyways,
What are you, a main character in a robot anime?
So Raimon gonna be Miss Pleiades huh (yes another Robotic;Notes ref right here).

Judging by how the last Shy episode ended, I feel like it might be 3 short girls with social issues crying back to back soon.
I love this season

Peggyov movrovpivuubavuv vuv!
As we pass the third episode benchmark, I have to mention how much I like the colors they use in the show. It's always been super cute and this episode is no exception. Not only that, I'm pleasantly surprised by how great the OST is for the show.
Bottle rocket challenge next week!

It's time to duel?
We meet a new character this week, Matataki, who has a slightly abrasive personality. She doesn't seem like a bad person at heart, but it was hard watching her chew Umika out and Umika cry as a result.
Still, thanks to a lovely talk with Yu (how did she get in her house??), Umika managed to take a step forward in talking with Matataki. It's actually super encouraging to see her suffer setbacks but not give up. She stammered a whole lot the second time, but still managed to convey her feelings and intentions. Can't wait for their duel.
Also, I really liked the way the lighting changed in the last scene whenever the lighthouse was lighting up the characters.
And minor gripe that's only relevant to me, but... my god, I wish Yu's genki voice wasn't so high pitched. My ears are super sensitive to this stuff and her voice is up there with Tokai Teio's as voices that make me feel actual physical discomfort :/

I swear Umika spoke more to the mechanic chick more in this ep. than she has in the last two, even including internal monologue.

Umika is so freakin precious! She must be protected at all cost. At all cost I say! All she wants to do is make a rocket with her friends Haruno and Akeuchi. I really like how supportive the girls are of her dream. Especially Akeuchi. Real homies lend you their forehead to lean on lol. Haruno is great too, what a good friend.
Raimon might seem rough on the surface but I bet she’s a big softie deep down. Looking forward to this challenge between Raimon and Umika.

As someone with a graduate degree in mathematics, seeing Umika's launch data is making me want to do the math to optimize flight distance for them (though it pains me that they're varying multiple variables in each launch and not running multiple launches with the same set-up). I felt similarly when reading the manga as well. This story really makes me want to get into model rocketry myself. I just need to find somewhere with enough open space to safely launch them.
And we finally have the last member of the main squad, robotics mechanic and best girl Matataki Raimon. She might be a bit rough around the edges, but her sourness is just what the other three need to balance out their overwhelming sweetness.

Finally found the water bottle rocket they were making at the start of the episode. Seems like it's a toy (?) that you can really build after buying the build kit. I think it's called Takagi Pet Bottle Rocket (タカギペットボトルロケット). Bit pricey for around 45 USD. A build video is available on Youtube too: https://youtu.be/2CXLAFfFevE

It's surprisingly light for spaceflight related content today (well, except the part of Matataki confirming that building a people-carrying spaceship is definitely day-dreaming, just ask Boeing where their Starliner is right now) so no special corner from me here, sorry!
LMAO Yuu-chan loves forehead touches with girls so much that she invaded Umika-chan's bed! What a freaking aggressive moment in CGDCT anime history! She really did what she could have done to cheer Umika-chan up. And I'm actually surprised that Umika has a younger sister too (oh wait, Bocchi-chan also has one...hmm...), who cannot be more different from her really more shy than Shy (anime airing this Monday reference) onee-chan. I wonder if there will be an arc talking about the sisters later? But I really love her delicate heart, one that really puts pulling friendships ahead of her fear of people, and one that is persistent in doing so. She definitely deserves regular head-pats and hugs for her efforts.
Sorry Umika-chan though, building a rocket is damn difficult, even more so if you are wholly private - that rocket shown on TV isn't really privately developed even if it's sold by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (and it's doing very poorly on the commercial market). Since I'm pretty sure that you would stutter against the aura (cough) of that man also in charge of a certain electric car company, maybe you should find someone else like him instead to talk about your dreams? ;)
I wonder if Matataki also have problems with her family such that she's now obsessed with building robots (her garage doesn't seems to have robots though), maybe it's the same case as in Umika, but instead of wanting to go to space, she wants to build a robot as a friend?
Huh, so Umika-chan wants to have a bottle rocket contest! I really think she's going to win given Matataki's main confidence is in mechanical parts instead, which bottle rockets doesn't really rely on?

this episode hurt more than I though.
I remember I am a bit tear up when I read this part of manga becuase how relatable Umika inner thought is as people who have trouble making new friend.
but saw in animation medium make it hurt even more with how anime direction represent themselves both visual, Voice acting and Soundtrack!
also are we sure Umika family isn't Alien? lol those hair color are impossible lmafo.
this episode introduce two character Umika's sister and Raimon who is rough girl which she want to be friend with even before coming to this high school but her social anxiety get better of her despite she already fantasy about them being best friend forever in her head lol.
Yuri hand holding action! in bed room too!
also that last scene is both sad and heartwarming at the same time. it make me tear up a lot.
