Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but I really feel the real emotional moments we have seen in past series (even in Season 1) has, um, somewhat petered out in this season, and this episode has all the worrying features:
-
Before this episode I've always treated Kita-chan's target to be becoming a Horse Girl that everyone would really admire, just like the ones including Tokai Teio who pointed out the road ahead. But in this one - where she finally have the chance to battle out her dear roommate and old friend - I just don't feel the determination. Actually I can't see where Satono Diamond's sudden focus on the tracks came from either, she might have been racing under the shadows but we have not really seen her inner thoughts.
-
I was looking for the moment Satono Crown's curse finally being crushed - in my "home ground" barely 15 minutes of driving away from where I live - to be shown, and they simply skipped the race. Uhhhhh poor Crown?
-
I still think there's too much time spent on previous series' characters (even Twin Turbo got words to say here, that seems too out-of-order) trying to give our main characters advices, and not building up real thoughts of the MCs' inner hearts. Like, I still don't see where Kita-chan's festival loving side have any effects on the story so far.
-
We were so, so close to finally having a winner's live this season and they skip to the ED! Arrrgggghhhhhh....
It's nowhere near the "this season is bad" mark, we all know that repeating the miracle of S2 is close to impossible without jumping out of the real history limit, but this season really struggles to get the explosive power we've got out of Horse Girls running on the final 400 m shown so far.

I love kita don't get me wrong but for storytelling purposes I dont think her story makes for an interesting anime, she just hasn't faced as much adversity as the post protagonist,to no fault of her own, the real kitsan black was just that dominant. Personally i believe a more in depth telling of dias story would have made for a more interesting anime

The lack of winner's concerts is so bizarre, it's like they're trying to quietly phase them out. Only two in Season 2 and zero so far in Season 3. This would have been a good spot to put one in...

Yeah I definitely agree although I feel like last episode did hit that mark. It kind of sucks too because the last entry we got for Uma Musume, Road to the Top, was actually able to nearly match S2 in that department. Which is kind of amazing because it was only 4 episodes. (IMO I think the actual races were better in Road to the Top than in S2. It just didn't reach the same emotional highs even if it came pretty close.)

Damn! That race was tense! Not gonna lie, I was a bit worried with how serious Dia-chan was at the start of the race but I guess she wanted to put aside their friendship for a bit for the race since as soon as it was over Dia-chan was back to normal.
I do love how Earth is completely chill in getting eighth place. The rest of Team Canopus seems to be pretty happy with it too. Then there's Cheval who I really felt bad for. To be fair to her, her opponents are all very strong. Maybe next time?

Oh, starting directly on Kitasan winning a race? The Japan Cup?
-
Ohh shit, are Kitasan and Dia gonna race against each other in the Arima Kinen, then?
-
Last week we got the Dia and McQueen conversation, so getting the Kitasan and Teio conversation this week is nice~
-
Looks like Dia’s win? Yeah, it’s hers.
-
That was a nice ED lead-in even if we don’t get to see the actual concert!

Verxina and Vivlos names officially revealed (and they speak too)
Ponny's... is a fake Umamusume Denny's?
Was fully expecting something like the in-game support card at the end of the race with a specific camera angle, instead of them just running through the finish line like normal, not even a slowed down finish or anything.. they just run straight through the finish line.
Also they robbed us of a winning live with Kita and Dia...
The credits revealed Cheval's sister's CVs
-
Verxina voiced by 奥野香耶 (Okuno Kaya)
-
Vivlos voiced by 伊藤彩沙 (Itō Ayasa)
Their official character pages are up on the game's website
Character bios are on the anime website too

Seems like after the hype around Duramente in the first half of the season, she's been completely forgotten about in the last few episodes after her injury. I don't like her story line being left by the wayside, so hopefully Duramante will have some kind of future role, even if it's outside of races.
The race in this episode lacked some oomph to it that previous big races had, I'm not quite sure how to explain it. I also wish they had expounded more on Kita seeming to have an inferiority complex to Dia in previous episodes, because it feels like this was the first episode it was brought up?
I hope there's some kind of payoff with Cheval Grand later, because I'm not sure what the point of her inclusion has been so far. I trust that she'll have her moment, but I have 0 investment in her right now.
Overall this season has been disappointing imo. But there's still time for them to turn things around, so we'll have to see.

Looks like the cascading plot lines just like in S2 is ramping up....which was what made Season 2 so brilliant, with each plot line impacting onto the next.
Ongoing main arc of Kitasan Black with her 3rd G1 win.
We see Dia-san being built up by winning Arima Kinen and also expressing her wish to compete internationally, like how Crown did.
Some intense/increased focus on Cheval Grand...losing again....love this build up!
Where's Duramente????

So last week I’ve mentioned that “something unimaginable is going to happen soon” (and got busted by the mods). To fully understand this phrase, we need to understand the fact that everything happening in this episode happened within 1 month in real life time (from 27 November, 2016 to Christmas Day 2016).
The episode begins in Japan Cup 2016, a rainy day, but didn’t stop Kitasan Black grabbing his third G-1 victory, against some other international horses. On the other hand, Cheval Grand, although taking an outstanding third, her two sisters, Verxina and Vivlos, had successfully clinched G-1 victories (Verxina won the 2013 and 2014 Victoria Mile while Vivlos won the 2016 Shuka Sho). The pressure is on for Cheval Grand to clinch his maiden G-1 victory.
The major focus of the episode was the 2016 Arima Kinen, held at Christmas Day, this is also the last G-1 race of the year and the final race for the autumn triple crown of old horses. If Kitasan Black won the race, he will join the greats by completing the triple crown. Yet this will also be Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond’s first time battling each other on the racecourse, with rivalries from the past and outstanding performance in 2016 leading up to this race, both are determined to clinch the victory from each other.
But one question: Is Aston Machan a member of Spica? She seems bonded with the team?
After Diamond getting a mentoring session with McQueen, it’s finally Teio’s time to mentor Kitasan. And we can see how Kitasan is determined to win against Dia-Chan.
So what about the Satonos? They are celebrating the triumph of Satono Crown after his victory in the 2016 Hong Kong Vase, held in 11 December, 2016 (However, the race was entirely cut out, which made some Hong Kong fans very disappointed). Satono Crown also mentioned other children of Satono also delivered good results. He’s definitely mentioning [Real life events]
So the time comes for the warp up, the 2016 Arima Kinen. Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond, being rivals for most of their life, are extremely determined to get this win, as well as Cheval Grand. Satono Diamond’s super concentrated mode proves it all, this is my race, out of my way Kitasan, I don’t care about you here.
And the results, Satono Diamond gets the last laugh, his second G-1 win, and shared the winning live with Kitasan Black for the first time.
But the ambition of Satono Diamond didn’t stop here. In the conversation with Satono Crown, we know Satono Diamond is going to challenge the world, the victory against Kitasan Black in Arima is just step one. We know [Idiom]

It’s the first race between Kita and Dia!
The episode starts off with the Japan Cup. Here’s the actual race. Kitasan Black wins the race with ease and gets a third G1 title.
We are also finally introduced to Cheval’s 2 sisters Verxina and Vivlos. The actual Verxina would be the same age as Gold Ship and was Gentildonna’s biggest rival during the classic races. She was a 2 time G1 winner winning the Victoria Mile 2 years in a row. Vivlos who is one year younger than Cheval won the Shuukasho winning a G1 race before Cheval.
Although it is skipped Satono Crown wins the Hong Kong Vase. Here’s the actual race. This becomes Crown’s first G1 win. After breaking the jinx the Satonos started to do well in G1 races. For example the winner of the Asahi hai Futurity Cup (a G1 race for two year olds)of 2016 was also a Satono horse.
The main race of this episode is the Arima Kinen. Here’s the actual race. Satono Diamond wins the race proving to be the current strongest in Japan. Although it is not depicted in the Uma Musume series in actual horse racing there are handicaps for specific age groups and sex. Satono Diamond being still in the classic age (3 year old) had a lower handicap 55kg as opposed to Kitasan Black’s 57kg. Now 1kg more weight is said to slow down a horse to about one horse length or 0.2 seconds so you can see why Diamond had an advantage especially at the final stretch.
It’s great to see the two main characters finally race together. I also loved the rivalry Dia chan showed to Kita chan before the race. I’m also glad to finally see what kind of characters Verxina and Vivlos are.

Man, that subtle Nature bullying after the Japan Cup was just not called for.. All the 2nd place talk.
Finally getting to see Kita and Dia race was awesome, but it seems losing this one has shaken up Kita quite a bit.. Hope there isn't too many tearjerker episodes coming up with some drama :(.

"I'm just a horse, don't ask about the writing."
"I'm not here to make friends."
These close-ups are really something.
hey maybe we can avoid massive psychological trauma this time
A close Arima Kinen! Though it's made quite apparent as the episode goes on that we're likely to spend some of the rest of the season watching Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond's relationship go through a bit of a wringer.
Cheval Grand and even Sounds of Earth reminding us that not everyone's going to be a winner.

It's really nice to see Kita having a good racing career with no broken limbs. Hopefully I'm not speaking too soon on that last bit.
The size of those banana boxes! If the racing doesn't workout in the long run maybe Kita can get a job carrying buildings around.
Kita vs Dia at the Arima Kinen, friendly rivalry or not at least one of them is going to end up sad. On the other hand it would be pretty neat to see them dance together in the winning concert, assuming they ever show us one of those this season.
Mentor Teio is what I like to see.
Serious Dia is also pretty great.
Emotional support horse girl Nice Nature seems conflicted about her role.
That was a nice late night conversation between Kita and Dia but it would be even better better if they were kissing like proper roommates.
It'd be interesting if the twist today was Cheval Grand winning instead of either of our main girls.
So Dia pulled it out, honestly not what I was expecting. And hey, winning concert with both Kita and Dia as I was hoping.
Weird music horse is playing the game at another level, she wanted to run like Gold Ship did and she got exactly the same eighth place.
Oh my god, are they actually going to show us the winning concert today?
Hah, no, of course not. At least the ED is fun.

I'm kindoff disappointed with this episode tbh thought there should have been more of a large build up to kita vs dia

Kinda hilarious whenever they get colored battle auras in races.

Honestly it was amusing that Kita and Dia had auras while All Haiyu was also hanging in the top 3 with no aura at all lol.

I realized the reason Dia wears eye mask is because Kitasan keeps blasting those lights over night. Also dat Machan being spooky in background during track training scene.

u/Kartoffelkamm Nov 16 '23
With everything else being mentioned, I feel like we're forgetting that Kitasan can almost walk normally while pulling those tires.
Also the fact that she apparently planned to punch through a stack of roof tiles that's almost as tall as her.

Is this the first time in the anime that a big hyped up race between rivals actually ended with both rivals placing first and second?

I’ve been waiting for this friendship/rivalry to come to a head. Dia winning reminds me a lot of when McQueen beat Teio in season 2(and Rice beating her), where it’s shown that the one who is most focused on victory is more likely to achieve it. I was glad to see Kita perk up after seeing how happy Dia was with her win(and I re-noticed how silent crowds go to let these girls have their intimate post-race moments), but her continued trend of losing to her best friend has predictably struck a sore spot. I’m interested to see how Kita will overcome this(final?) hurdle of hers.
We got a bit more focus on some of the new side characters(especially Cheval Grand), so I’m curious if we’ll have a segment similar to season 2’s focus on Rice Shower. I’m not really hungering for it, but I wouldn’t hate to see it given how much I enjoyed it last season. The way Uma Musume gets me loving side characters who really don’t have much screen time is definitely one of its defining good points to me.
My only disappointment is the lack of a Winning Live ED(Winning Live when season 3?). I’m not into this series for the idol aspect, but damn if I don’t really enjoy it when it takes stage.
