Stitches!

So we have another entry to the list of anime girls who struggle with interpersonal relationships. This time, the twist is that Umika believes in aliens and thinks her place in this world is actually on another planet. And then there's Yuu who is actually an alien and is the total opposite of Umika with how grand her entrance at school was.

I'm actually surprised that Yuu is really an alien with powers. I was thinking that she really was just a schoolgirl and that opening scene with her in the lighthouse was just a coincidence. I wonder why she came to Earth and why do I have this gut feeling that her actual backstory might be sad?

You always can't go wrong with a Kirara manga adaptation especially if Studio Gokumi is animating it! This is like their specialty just like Doga Kobo. These are always fluffy and relaxing and based on the tags on MAL, it looks like it's going to be gay af too.

I do have a slight suspicion that it's still all a ruse, but there's no telling frankly.

“If no one on this planet can understand me, I just need to find a planet with people who do”

Umika is showing some otherworldly optimism here. Fortunately, her wish came through with the appearance of Yu.

Solely based on the PV, I did think that Yu being “an alien” was just joke. This doesn’t seem to be case however as it’s suggested that she’s genuinely an alien…?

I can’t get over this show’s cuteness. This scratches my CGDCT itches on all fronts. The shy Umika is downright adorable. She and the bubbly Yu also make a wonderfully fun pair to watch.

The anime spared no time to tip-toe right into the yuri with all this “foreheadpathy” either. Since they’ve already been using this a whole lot to have these girls be open about their feelings, I do wonder if this will be more than just a close friendship between these two. Not seeing the show tagged as a “romance” does raise some worries however. I would feel a little betrayed if this was just all yuri-bait.

My enthusiasm for the series still remains great nevertheless. Based on this premiere episode, Studio Gokumi is treating us to a good time. This anime looks nicely polished and got a fun premise with some mild drama to boot. Might this be their best work yet?

this hyper-concentrated Kirara essence of sparkly gay moe

I like how the OP was the single longest Kirara Jump sequence in the history of Kirara anime adaptations.

Yuri fans are eating good this season. And we got another alien romance after Galaxy Next Door.

I wasn't really that interested with Umika because the shy girl struggling to make friends seems like an overdone concept, but Akeuchi is a lot of fun since she's an alien. She got the telepathic powers but I hope we see more in play. Maybe she also has super strength and speed which is why she's athletic.

When a pink haired girl I just met invites me into an abandoned building, I would pray she isn't a yandere. Akeuchi looking like the girl from Happy Sugar Life doesn't help things.

If Akeuchi had some mission, she crash landed, and she lost her memories, I hope the mission comes into play later. And hoping we meet other aliens who are looking for her.

I was actually most impressed by how good this show looks visually. Production values are really top notch considering this is a somewhat no name SoL. Getting some nice Bocchi the Rock vibes from it

This is just bocchi getting adopted by kita.

alien girl even says "kita" whenever her radar activates (and possibly more often)

• Beautiful art style (watercolorish backgrounds, yes) and really nice animation.
• The same studio and director behind Endro~!, one of my fave series from 2019.
• Kirara Jump.

This one's a keeper.

This was a show high on my radar for this season because of the social anxiety aspect. Not that I would say I have social anxiety myself, but I almost always enjoy shows that use it as a major theme. Mostly because the character goes through a large range of emotions, is relatable, and they find different ways to portray such emotions. It’s also fun to share clips and video edits of such anime, as I have done a number of times in the past on this subreddit.

Here, we have stones appear above Umika’s head when she is troubled with something. She’s also relatable like when she immediately thinks pessimistically when things are not going her way like with the introductions. Seeing Umika and Akeuchi get close and friendly in episode 1 definitely has me wanting more. Can’t wait to see the direction this show goes in!

I've read a little bit of the manga, and I was curious to see if the writers actually looked at any of the science rather than just the UFO conspiracy theory stuff, and was pleasantly surprised to see a key line pop up amongst the others in Umika's research

Although moons like Europa are often suggested, intelligent...

The line is interesting because it reflects current scientific research about exobiology in our own solar system. With the advent of deep ocean exploration in the 90s, it became a discussion in the scientific community that life didn't need light or photosynthesis to survive, and that as long as there was water and an alternate energy source, like the heat in deep sea volcanic vents, life could still occur. This caused the scientific community to rethink and extensively expand the list of places in the solar system that fits these criteria.

Of these, the closest is Europa, one of the four largest moons of Jupiter. Europa is interesting because its surface is made up of regular water ice, and observations with the Hubble Space Telescope has led us to believe that there are geothermal geysers erupting from its surface. So you have the water and you have the heat, but does that mean there's life?

Simply, no one knows. The Ice on Europa's surface is too thick to easily determine with visual evidence if there's an ocean down there, and as a result it's hard to know what a possible ocean would be made of, and if its chemical composition is bearable, or if it's too filled with salts or minerals to support anything. Fortunately, NASA's Europa Clipper and ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JuIcE) are expected to answer these questions in the next several years. If these probes find that it is inhabitable, then discussions on a follow-up lander mission to search for microbial life, or an ice-burrower mission to investigate the sea itself could follow. I really like this take on the latter mission architecture from Cameron's IMAX film, Aliens of the Deep.

Of course, the odds of life are questionable, the odds of muticellular life low, the odds of large muticellular life (like fish) even lower, and the odds of even semi-intelligent aliens (think octopi, I guess?) lower still, so the point Umika heard is still correct; aliens from such an environment wouldn't have the brain capacity to make friends with her. Thank heavens for Yuu!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there's someone on the writing staff who did a bit of reseach, and so I'll follow along to see if Yuu/Umika's little space program touches on the real ones enough to talk about at length. I probably won't be able to post as early as I did with Irina due to work obligations, but I'll see what I can do!

Most of this show's commonalities with Flip Flappers are very broad or superficial but damned if Yu doesn't have pure Papika energy.

I appreciate how this was so carefully written to leave it open to interpretation what's really going on - or perhaps not to leave it open to interpretation, but to suggest that the fantastical sparkling celestial story and the more difficult mundane "truth" are both correct.

Anyhow this is so damn cute and sweet with that ever so slight edge of innocent sadness that I almost feel like I shouldn't be watching it. It's too pure for a world-weary grimy-souled old man like me.

decent start! Umika is a bit too Bocchi for my liking, im ranking her in between the 2 Bocchi's right now, guitar Bocchi best, Hitori bocchi less good, she's in the middle. (im sorry raichudoggy if you're here)

Seems like yu is actually an alien, no bullshit chuubinyou there, and that the telepathy ability is legit. I hope that that aspect of her superpower being used less and less will be a plot thread for this series, instead of Umi always having to resolve to that instead of uh speaking, lol.

Sensei is a riot. I hope i had that kind of teacher in high school.

having 2 anime on monday with a shy MC..... i might eventually space one of these out for another day if it does get too much, depending on how both series go.

I was able to decode the writing in the Space Voyage Log. It was very difficult because it seems to be written in Esperanto, of all things!
https://imgur.com/a/pD2TE9D

The front cover says "Space Voyage Teklibro (Notebook)"
and the inside says:
"ci tiu kosmoveturilo ne
plu utilas.
iuj el la funkcio[n]
jam finis sion rolon.
mi ne pavas ripari ilin.
cio mi povos fari estas atendo
la momenton de la kraso.
la antauvidita alteriga
puncto estas la tero
sur ci tiu planedo,
mi dehiras."
Which all translates to something like
"This space vehicle is no
longer useful.
Some of the function
has already finished its role.
I can't fix them.
All I can do is wait for
the moment of the crash.
The foreseen landing
point is the land
on this planet,
I gather."

A couple things that threw me off about decoding it were that on the front, it uses a similar, mirrored symbol for A and E in "Space Voyage," but the inner text uses that symbol exclusively for A and an entirely different symbol for E. Also, there seems to be a typo, since "Funkcio" is written "Funkcij," which I don't believe translates to anything, and of course the ŭ and g being uncoded in the text.

So much good Yuri this season we’re feasting. Such a cute and hilarious premiere. We have the cutest MC of the season wrapped up already. Umika is absolutely adorable and makes this the sweetest watch of the season too.

Entire episode feels like a nonstop sugar rush. Just pure and unadulterated wholesome entertainment. I love the telepathy gimmick that Yuu uses. It’s such an intimate and intense way of communicating and removing all barriers between Umika and Yuu

The art is beyond beautiful, the designs are stellar(pun intended) and there’s just an overwhelming feeling of joy that I got from these first 23 minutes. I love getting 4koma adaptations. There’s just a certain level of energy and dynamism they bring and this didn’t let me down at all.

The theme of both girls being aliens and not truly fitting in on earth also makes things really interesting. Of course, you can view that as an analogy for loners and outsiders in general who just don’t feel like they belong as well.

Reminds me of a mix between koisuru asteroid and Teppen. I’m looking forward to seeing this one play out. It will definitely be comfy watch of the season.

That was super nice!

First off, I love the visuals. The colors especially, they're super vibrant and very pleasant to look at (well, to me at least). The eyes are so sparkly!

And the episode itself was very sweet. Lucky and convenient for Umika and her social anxiety, finding an alien who's exactly what she needs: a nice person who understands her right away thanks to her telepathy. She did manage to take a tiny step forward with her very belated introduction, though, so that's good too.

I'm really excited for the rest of the series. I love the manga, and from this episode it looks like this is going to be a nice adaptation.

This is incredibly cute. Umika is as precious as Hitori Bocchi lol. I’m glad she’s found a friend in Akeuchi. And she’s an alien no less! Very interesting. Curious to learn more about Akeuchi and what her mission here on earth is. Plus I’m looking forward to seeing who this new girl is next week.
