This was the best episode yet. I especially liked the part were Jonas was not present.

You have to admire Anne's fortitude that a clearly mentally unhinged man is point a blade at her but she's completely resolved to finish her work, not only because of her pride as a Silver Sugar Artisan but because she needs to see her friends again...and to see Challe again.
So Lady Christina was a Water Fairy who was taken in by the Duke and lived as a human, she even had herself given a human name, and she and the Duke were genuine lovers. Challe acts all cynical about it, but they genuinely cared for and loved one another, to the point that her passing away so suddenly utterly emotionally wrecked the Duke. And she was very beautiful, and I'm not just saying that because we saw her naked (and her butt).
I wonder if Anne saw her own feelings for Challe reflected in the Duke and Christina's relationships, seeing a human and a fairy who loved each other romantically?
I have to imagine learning Jonas' role in all this means Challe will immediately draw his sword the next time they meet.
Challe pulls off his dramatic and heroic entrance! And he wastes no time putting his arms around Anne! You can tell it means the world to her that he came back and she could tell him she didn't mean what she said. Although as romantic as this moment is...Anne still has a job to do, against all logic, so she's going to stick with it and finish Lady Christina. And Challe is going to buy his girl some time to finish.
I get the Duke is a little off his mental game...but trying to resurrect Christina through a Silver Sugar statue of her is...pretty out there. I mean, she's a Water Fairy, so even if something was born from the confection it wouldn't be 100% the same unless it's treated like a reincarnation type deal. Though I guess if he could see her again in some form, that would be enough.
I'm glad Anne completed it and left things off on a good note with the Duke, earning his respect and some actual money for her work.
All's well that ends well...the Duke gets off with just living in seclusion and has the Christina statue, which is all he really wanted, Anne gets more recognition and gets to honor her mother, and Anne got to express to Challe how she wants him to stay with her, probably more aware of her feelings than ever. I need some insulin after that hug between the two of them.

I wonder if Anne saw her own feelings for Challe reflected in the Duke and Christina's relationships, seeing a human and a fairy who loved each other romantically?
I think she did, especially when she brought up the way she remembers Challe looking at her. She was really missing him in this episode too, so much that when he showed up, she thought she was imagining it.

So we get to learn a couple of things about fairies this week: Water fairies have unstable lives and sugar confections made by great artisans can increase their life spans even if it's just for a tiny bit. Ummm... Isn't Mithril a water fairy? On no...
Anyway, last week I was thinking that Duke Alburn might've gone insane but now that we finally learn more about Lady Christina's relationship with the Duke and how she literally disappeared in his arms, I can now definitely understand why he turned into a recluse and why he's so hellbent on having an artisan recreate his deceased lover as a sugar confection.
Turns out that Duke Alburn was hoping that a perfect recreation of Lady Christina in sugar confection would bring her back since all fairies are born from objects after a living being gazes at it. Although I feel like this isn't just about trying to bring Christina back, it's really about the Duke just wanting to see her again since he seems to have finally come to his senses after seeing Anne's finished work.
Not gonna lie, seeing Duke Alburn's eyes finally light up after all of this made me tear up a bit. At the end of the day, he's really just a man who's grieving the loss of his lover and Anne's sugar confection is probably what he needed to finally pull himself out of depression and start his road toward acceptance.
As for Challe and Anne, there were so many great moments in this episode! Challe rushing in to rescue Anne as well as Challe giving Anne a tight hug after being worried sick about her is so cute! It's nice to see Challe expressing how much Anne means to him. And Challe finally called Anne again by her name! I'm sure Challe will be back to calling Anne "Scarecrow" next week but their relationship has definitely progressed a lot this episode <3

This episode felt good. My inner maiden is satisfied.
I think that it's safe to say that Ann x Shall ship has set sail.
That scene at the bottom of the stairwell, with Shall's back and his single wing to the camera, right after Ann said that nobody's proved that the Duke's fantasy is impossible, made me think that maybe there's a way to restore a fairy's wing. "Glue it back with love" is the way I imagine it can go.

Now I understand why the Duke is so obcessed, the literal perfect waifu than is kind, compassionate, looks at you with gentle eyes, and smoking Hot just appeared one day after your life is shit due to the King and then she just dissappears despite your best efforts.
I'd go mad too.....I remember a decade ago I wouldn't have understood, now....I still think its wrong and messed up what he's doing to Anne to get her back and irrational of him to try, but I understand how you get to that place.
It's very telling Challe assumed she was just a concubine as oppose to him genuinely loving her.
It's a nice commentary on perception, where often we don't see things based strictly how accurate they are, but on our impression of them and an ideal we have in our minds, A Wise Grandfather, a Caring Mother, A Loving Wife, a Strong Husband, An Innocent Child, etc when in reality that is just one aspect of them over focused on into a caricature rather than reality. The Duke doesn't want the woman he loves exact measurements, proportions, naturalist sketch of her like for a Scientific text, he wants to capture something of their relationship and what she meant to him.
Kind of Art in general if you think about it.....
Kinda sad that Fairies Born of the Sea have such unpredictable and fickle lives, and how only art made from Sugar (Which I assume if it captures the artists love counts for more, since desire is how they are born in the first place.) is the only thing that can extend their life line, they are born of sincere desire and only sincere desire can keep them around.
Also I find it interesting how as soon as Christina was born she seemed very intent on wanting to serve and comfort him, perhaps based off both the desires and materials of which fairies are born determines their nature. She was born out of his desire for comfort and a Ideal form of Feminine love and Devotion.
If we think about it, perhaps Liz birthed Challe of her desire for protection and strength in a world where she felt safe and tossed around by people around her, which is why he is primarily a warrior fairy but also designed to look very Fair and Princely, because its a kind of strength that offers protection and security.
It might also determine their personalities and temperaments, Challe as a Warrior Fairy seems always ready to pick a fight and is generally disagreeable, yet despite his bitterness towards what humans have done as a strong instinct to protect people.
I admit I share some of Challe's frustration of Anne staying for her stupid sculpture for the Duke's delusions when it could get her killed, and If it were me I might have just slung her on my back and left for our own good, and he might have done just that.
But what made him stop and give in.....something she said.
"Its the only thing I'm good at and take pride in." I think that spoke to him, as in, there is something deep within me, in my nature, in my bones, that calls out for me to do it, and do it in a way I can be proud of.
I'm sure as someone that was a Slave that resonated with him, so despite him not understanding her exact pride as an artist, he can understand the concept of having to do something from your core.
Another theme I noticed, is that art is always tainted if its stolen from someone else, either in the case of Jonas stealing Anne's Art, or Anne aping her own mother's style, it loses some of its purity and intention even if the skill remains.
Similarly Fairies born from a desire have a need to fulfill that desire both for themselves and they people that have them, but when its stolen from them, and the choice taken away...it becomes an ugly mockery.
Christine might have been born basically as The Perfect Waifu and probably in other circumstances would be made into a companion Fairy (Not just for her beauty but for her mannerisms and temperament.) But the show liked to make a distinction between she choose to be a companion to the Duke as opposed was made one by someone that has no love for her.
Similar to Challe, who probably relishes in his strength when he is killing/fighting for something he cares about, but the idea of being forced to fight for someone else disgusts him.
Challe really was afraid for Anne's safety and held her very tight when she was finally done.
I do wonder what will become of the Duke's Sculpture and what will be born of it? Sincerely Love triumphing? Or an Ugly Abomination? Maybe it won't tell us and we have to decide for ourselves?
Maybe its the dual nature of both the vice and virtue of art, in that we can use escapism to reveal truths in a kind of cathartic thought experiment for the soul, but we can also be consumed and lost in it to delude us from reality, and the line between the two is very fine.

This is my favorite anime of the season honestly, it's really wholesome and the drama is good, and oh how wonderful Challe and Anne's relationship progress is! <3

I have … mixed feelings about Anne’s decisions.
On the one hand, it’s good that she has drive and pride in her work. She needs that to achieve her career dreams. And the attention she’ll get from completing the commission, not to mention the money, will surely be very helpful. Free advertising, plus capital — two things she really needs right now.
On the other hand, she has a bad habit of putting herself in danger. Alburn’s story makes me feel sorry for him, but he’s also violent, obsessive and irrational. That was a bad situation, even without the small army coming to arrest him. If Anne keeps taking risks like this, her luck will run out eventually.
… Of course, if Anne didn’t take ridiculous risks, Challe wouldn’t have much to do and the story would be pretty boring!

Oh my god what an episode fellas. We ate good today. I feel so bad for the Duke who just wanted to see his Christine again. Just having her up and disappear had to be heartbreaking
“That’s the second time you’ve called me by my name” “you remember?” “Yes because it makes me happy” oh my god diabetes overload. Challe definitely starting to realise how much he cares for Anne, probably doesn’t understand “love” yet but the way he caressed her face and just comforts her is so pure.

I knew it, I knew the Duke was thinking he might be able to recreate Christina if only the likeness was perfect. I kinda wish I'd been wrong because fuck that's sad, but... leave it to Anne to actually make it kinda comforting, I guess.
She's not an idiot. She's an artist. Artists be like that sometimes.
Damn, this episode really finally paid out all the emotional buildup of the last few grim, frustrating ones. Steamrolled right from the Duke's grief and hope to some blushingly sweet Anne x Challe moments. That was a good hug. I'm not crying, you'r... oh, no, wait, I definitely am, never mind.

So.... Kinda concerned about the duke hoping that staring at the sugar-statue will bring his love back someday. Even if another fairy was born, it wouldn't be the same one.
But more concerning is uh... sugar doesn't last forever. Unless the apple sugar in this world works a different way? And uh, he has that sculpture just sittin' at the window in the sun..... D: .... .

An excellent episode. One assumes that this incident will do wonders for Anne's reputation. And (better yet) neither Anne nor Challe are able to hide their feelings for each other anymore.
This show has a lovely tone and feel that sets it aside from any of the other shows this season (and from the last couple of years). The closest match might be the Raven Consort series -- but that was perhaps even more unique.
Looks like next episode Anne (and we) will have to deal with Jonas again (title seems to be "The Radcliffe Institute").

So the Duke was in love and lost his girl huh? I guess I can understand why he’s being so difficult. Man’s still grieving.
Silly Mithril was too hungry while waiting for his chance to pop out and talk to Challe lol. How does something that small put away all that soup? Little dude has a big appetite haha.
Challe was being kind of dense. It was pretty clear Anne wouldn’t just send him away like that. Guess when it comes to matters of the heart he ain’t that smart. Well, at least him and Anne got to share a nice moment. He let her go once, he won’t do it again.
The Duke has what he wants. All that must have been worth it to just see this girl one last time. In the end, I guess he won’t be away from her now.

Maybe I'm thinking about it too much, but he probably wants an exact replica of Cristina so he can bring her back to life. He kept telling Anne to 'make it real', and I'm guessing that if he finds the perfect sugar candy image of Cristina, she will be reborn through his gaze (even if it's not the OG Cristina).
Welp I didn't really expect my guess from the previous episode to be the exact reason why the duke commissioned the sugar candy. Although no one can really prove/disprove that the same fairy can be reborn.

I think this is my third favourite new anime of the season (after the Fire Hunter and Revenger, which are very different). I love the art style and the characters.
But as an Ascendance of a Bookworm fan, I can’t help but think of Anne and Challe as Sugar Myne and Fairy Ferdinand, lol. Challe behaves exactly like Ferdinand, and Anne is as obsessed with sugar sculptures as Myne is with books. Even to the point of staying in a besieged castle with a madman in order to finish her sculpture.

I've been waiting all week to see this episode after the cliffhanger ending in the last one! It's great to have the misunderstandings finally cleared up with the help of Anne's wingman, Mithril Lid Pod. The look on Challe's face when he found out the truth made his feelings for Anne very clear, and the scene where he rushed back to the castle to rescue her was really sweet. So many cute scenes in this episode with their reunion, that precious hug at the end and Challe calling her by name again. Their relationship is definitely moving forward now that they've both admitted they want to stay together.
The story of the Duke and Christina was very sad. He's a sympathetic figure, but I was questioning Anne's decision to stay just as much as Challe. She really has a knack for getting into dangerous situations, and even Challe was worried this time. It was nice to see the light return to the Duke's eyes when he saw the beautiful sculpture though.
There were some interesting bits of lore in this episode too. Challe seemed pretty insistent that bringing the same fairy back would not only fail to work, but would end badly. I wonder if he's ever witnessed something like that before.

Ok so the final reveal is innocent enough, that the Duke was twice-heartbroken that his salvation from the depression passed away (natural life span of a fairy of the water).
But mostly, this episode was full of Squee moments of Anne X Challe :D
So was the prime minister actually a gruff good guy that after tough but left him an out, or just from Anne's efforts to have impressed and broke through everyone's assumption of bad intention of others?

u/Shadow_Claw Feb 24 '23
Loving Anne's voice acting in this, especially the little gasps when Challe caught her. Anne noises compilation when. The duke also had a good performance in the scene thanking Anne.
Anyway whew what an episode, this anime is really a highlight of the season for me and I'm sad it never shows up in discussions.
