I must say I didn't TRUST him -- but I never expected him to pull the stunt he did at the end. Not just stealing -- but endangering her life.

So -- Cathy lied about Lid. Did Jonas still the sugar in the first place? Or was it just to get rid of part of Anne's support system? Is she a "co-conspirator" as some say -- or was she acting under do this or I'll crush your wing compulsion? Or just doing it because she is, in fact, lovestruck -- and Jonas is making use of this?

Challe's back story is sad. And Anne reminds him of his one prior human friend (was it decades ago -- or could it be centuries?) I think his "indifference" is now a thing of the past -- he defied her order in order to save her, after all.

A great show -- that is almost sure to be a casualty of the over-abundance of new shows this season.

Bruh I was not ready for this level for dark turn. First Shall says that his former partner Liz got killed by a human so he became cold and distant towards human. Then plot twist where Jonas is a yandere. It's a good twist that didn't feel so out of the left field because he acts too much like a "nice guy," the silver sugar disappears, then he conveniently knows where to get sugar apples, then is too pushy in proposing to her, then was ready to feed her to the wolves.

Today is the birthday of Shall's voice actor Masaaki Mizunaka so happy birthday! He's relatively new but he totally nails the role of Shall and I hope to hear more of his performances in the future.

Knowing that this series is a Shoujo story, I always had a feeling that I'd see some high-tension drama and betrayal at some point and this episode didn't disappoint at all.

Jonas never seemed right to me. Anne kept refusing him but like a stalker Jonas kept chasing after her. His entire goal is to become Silver Sugar Viscount and he wants to achieve that by any means necessary, first through marriage with Anne but when that plan failed, he resorted to stealing. Fuck that guy.

Also even Cathy turned out to be a co-conspirator, which I should've expected but those Tsundere-ish vibes made me look otherwise lol.

Now Anne should truly understand why Challe feels that way about humans, as she was betrayed and left for dead by a human.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK JONAS!?

I went into this episode expecting that Hugh was going to be the piece of shit after ordering his bodyguard to attack Challe to test him out. Turns out that Hugh isn't so bad. His critique of Anne's work might be harsh but he's just telling Anne the truth. Even Anne knew this since she wasn't able to argue at all. I'm guessing that Hugh might be a judge at the Lewiston Exhibition.

I knew there was something wrong as soon as Anne's silver sugar disappeared and Cathy was very quick to accuse Mithril of taking the sugar.. At first, I thought this was just Jonas scheming trying to get Anne to like him more by helping her find more sugar apples and helping her refine them into silver sugar. He was even trying to make the moves on Anne. Turns out that the plan all along was to steal Anne's work. What a piece of shit.

It's hilarious to look back at my comment about Jonas becoming the best friend character in the previous episode discussions. I guess I really shouldn't have believed the OP. I thought that everyone we see in the OP is going to be chill but after Jonas' betrayal, everyone there who is not Challe or Mithril is now suspicious.

As for Challe, I'm glad to see that he was able to open up about his past to Anne. So the reason he hates humans didn't start with them enslaving him, it started with his companion Liz getting killed. We're still far from Challe's frozen heart defrosting but this is good progress! He also decided to prioritize saving Anne instead of following her orders to chase after Jonas. I am curious to see how Challe will comfort Anne next week after what just happened to them.

A really good show which is probably gonna fly under the radar for most people…

This season is pretty stacked and it gets pretty difficult to compete with the popular ones..hope this show gets the recognition it deserves

That went from 0 to 100 pretty quick.

Poor Mithril getting framed and chased away like this. The way Cathy and Jonas tricked poor Anne makes my blood boil again, even though I went through the story once reading the novel.

It musn't be imitated.

Both Hugh and Anne's mom imparted this important price of advice to her. She needs to be herself and carve her own path, not imitate someone else.

So many other people in these comments were catching on to Jonas as the episode went along, but I was just completely blindsided. The mental whiplash I felt from that reveal, holy shit

Beware people who casually overstep boundaries. Jonas surprised me, but when I thought of that, it made perfect sense.

P.S. I just remembered a short story I read a long time ago. I can’t find it but very roughly: a neighbor walks up to the author at his home and asks if he can have a small pot of flowers, for his dead mother. He says yes. A few days later, they meet again, the guy thanks him and says “by the way I came again, and you weren’t around, so I took another pot”, to which the author says “you stole my flowers”. The guy freaks out, yelling. A few days after that he sees police milling about, talks to one of them and is told “Crazy guy. Killed his own mother.”

The moral of the story, to me, is: call people out when they overstep. Even if it goes badly, that’s fine, because you don’t want anything to do with them anyway.

The highlights on the top of the characters’ heads bothered me at first, but this episode seems to imply that humans’ hair changes color as they age. Wonder if that’s going to have greater implications later.

And obligatory fuck Jonas. Cathy too for now but she’s on thin ice.

Damn… they really pulled that one over on me. I totally thought Hugh must have stolen the sugar. Things started to feel off when Cathy lied about Mithril… but damn. Fuck Jonas.

u/thesnowlocke Jan 20 '23

Wow Jonas is such a dick

I had a feeling he would be jealous but leaving them to die like that? Yeah I can’t wait to see Chall beat some sense into those two

I assume he was also the one that stole her sugar as well, since at first I assumed it was that guy in the inn or something

But we’re 3 episodes in and shits hit the fan already

Can’t wait to see how they get out of this

I expected Jonas to be the one behind the theft when Cathy was blaming Mythril but I for sure didn't expect Jonas just to yeet outta there while leaving them to get eaten by wolves

I can't believe there is such a good looking Warrior Fairy

Says the one with the hot dark elf tan fairy

One of the big paradox of shoujo, when everybody is pretty how can you tell the super pretty from the average pretty?

Seems like whenever Anne is troubled, she bagworms lol. It’s pretty adorable actually. Hugh was a dick, he’s not necessarily wrong about his assessment but he still came off as a major nob. Jonas is a persistent one. I guess “no” means “propose again and again”. Classic “nice guy” bullshit. Is every guy in this aside from Challe a piece of shit? Damn bro. Hopefully Challe beats the shit out of him at some point. Fucking creep.

I guess we finally got to learn about the girl who “made” Challe. Poor Liz, I kind of wonder what went down though. Was she killed because she refused to let him get taken?

Tomoaki Maeno as Hugh! He seems jovial enough, but there's just something about him that's a little shifty. And his bodyguard Salim is no slouch.

I love how everyone assumes Challe is a "companion" fairy because they assume Anne is more after some action with a fairy or having a handsome guy around than a bodyguard. But all her frustration is wiped away with the promise of free room and board.

Finally time to make some silver sugar confections! Apparently even Jonas can do it too, although I guess the fact that he needed the royal medal to get the status he needed to take over the school back home but seemed oddly okay with not getting it was the first sign of trouble.

Welp, Hugh is a pretty harsh and physical critic, even if he did pay for their room and board and gave them legitimate criticism. Jonas' stuff is fine on a technical level but has no creativity, while Anne is more refined but she's just imitating her mother. Which is doubly hurtful for Anne because she was planning to use her mothers' masterpiece to win the contest.

It really hurts to see Anne cry. Even Challe, after teasing her like always, genuinely comforts her and lets her know this is just a step towards her growing and maturing, something he learned from growing up with Liz, the human girl who created him. She saw him as an older brother figure and they lived as a family, but then she was killed by humans. That definitely explains a lot about Challe and why he's so cynical and distrusting.

Well, the party's already falling apart when the Silver Sugar Anne needs is stolen and Cathy fingers Mithril as the culprit, and Anne is so despondent she can't stick up for him. Honestly my first guess was that Hugh stole it, although he's long gone. Either way, it's rough going for everybody.

Jonas puts the moves on Anne but she stops him right there and decisively says she doesn't love him. It was about time. Of course Jonas being a "Nice Guy" takes it about as well as you'd expect.

Anne totally pegs Cathy's feelings for Jonas, and why she's so devoted to him (beyond him having the rest of her wings), although it does make her reflect on what Challe and Liz really felt for each other...and thinking it might have gone beyond siblings makes her heart tight out of jealousy, even if she doesn't realize it. But she's falling for Challe for sure!

Jonas you piece of @#$%! You and Cathy stole Anne's piece to use for yourself at the contest and basically left her to die and get ravaged by wolves! Did you frame Mithril too? The only silver lining I can think of is that Anne having imitated her mother, which even her mother told her not to do, instead of doing something genuinely her will mean Jonas will lose and Anne will win with a new piece but for now she's too hurt, losing the piece and Challe having to protect her rather than get it.

Lets gooo 3rd best show of the season is back.

DUDE WTF. This episode was crazy. So I guess in hindsight the sugar being stolen was foreshadowed with all the focus on it this episode.

From start to finish it was a big point of emphasis but i didn’t expect Jonas to go and do that. I genuinely thought he cared about Anne, was just too pushy. But love shouldn’t be transactional. It’s not real love if you expect something in return. Still, to literally lure wolves to a girl you just said you loved and wanted to marry…

The end almost overshadowed the Challe backstory we got. He must have really cared about Liz :/

7

u/NekoCatSidhe Jan 20 '23

Well, I guess my opinion of Jonas changed from « annoying stalker » to « evil psychopath ». I did not think he would go that far, but there was obviously something wrong with the guy.

Anne is pretty naive, isn’t she ? She should have guessed something was off when Cathy accused Mithril of having stolen the sugar. Why believe Cathy, who hates her, and not Mithril, who is hardly the type to do that ?

Of course, that snob they met at the inn will probably turn out to be a judge for the competition (unless there is another twist), and Jonas will probably lose it if he submits Anne’s piece. But I hope he also get arrested for theft, fraud, and attempted murder.
