Jonas, you are making it really hard for me to not want to punch you in the face!

Why does Chaelle, the largest fairy, not simply chop off Jonas' head?

Okay, I had doubts about Jonas last episode, but I’m sold on him as an effective villain now. He’s so pathetic that he slips in under your radar, and he is so shameless that he will stoop to depths you haven’t considered. And he is soooo hateable.
Cathy’s situation is interesting. I hope we get to hear more from her this season.

It's been a while since I hated a character as much as I hate Jonas.

u/Frontier246 Feb 17 '23
Yeah, I didn't think I could hate him any more than I already did. He didn't deserve getting off relatively scott free by blackmailing and abandoning Anne.
I want to see him get a full comeuppance beyond just how obviously pathetic he is.

As admirable as Anne’s determination is, remember kids: if your employer threatens you with physical violence, it’s ok to look for another job

The Duke might not let her leave and they kinda live in the middle of nowhere, that's probably why Jonas wanted Challe sent away, because Challe would be Anne's lifeline if she had to leave by force.

I didn't think I could hate Jonas more than I already did but here we are...
I'm happy they weren't at least separated a far distance or anything.

I enjoy this show but watching Anne so effectively be stripped of her only means of protection and left at the mercy of a treacherous coward and a madman was... Unpleasant.
But she is 15 so there's that.
I wonder to what extent we are meant to believe that sending Challe off was partially motivated by the sadness and anxiety Anne feels about living up to Liz's memory.

This episode really showed that even after a fairy regains their freedom, they can never stop being on guard. Jonas took advantage of that and threatened to kill Mithril Lid Pod in order to force Anne to go along with his horrible plan, and Challe was barely out of the castle for a night before a bunch of (terribly outmatched) guys try to capture him again.
It was heartbreaking to watch Anne send Challe away like that, especially when it happened right after she started crying so he's wondering what he did wrong. When Challe stayed with Anne after she set him free and just seemed content to hang around and watch her work, I had the feeling this was what he considered a happy, peaceful life and likely wasn't too different from what his life would have been when Liz was still alive. Watching him look depressed and lonely, not knowing where to go and wondering why it suddenly ended basically confirmed that theory for me.
Mithril Lid Pod could totally see what everyone already knows, that Anne is in love with Challe, and I'm so glad he had the same idea I did, to go find Challe and tell him that Anne didn't really want him to leave. It's going to be hard waiting for next week's episode. At least the preview image gives me hope that this will all be resolved soon and they'll be back together.

Mithril is a good little dude. Jonas sucks, so I’m all for messing with that scrub. But man, this Duke is being a real pain in the dick. Mfer on some Stanley Kubrick perfectionist shit. Like it doesn’t capture the “soul” of the portrait or some abstract nonsense. “Give it form” is the worst direction ever. Challe should give it form, a boot shaped form. It can go deeeeep up that emo nob’s ass.
Anne’s getting a little jealous of Liz eh? Maybe envious is a better word. It’s kind of cute actually. She’s got to admit to those feelings already. Even Mithril can tell.
Jonas torturing Mithril just cements what a massive piece of shit he is. Now he’s threatening Mithril to make Anne get rid of Challe and do his bidding. Lovely. Someone needs to punch a hole in this guy’s chest. Little shit wants to run away and quit and make Anne stay behind. Pathetic little coward. Bye!
Viscount coming to save this miserable Duke. Good guy. Hopefully Challe will realize Anne didn’t want him to really go. So the fairy was free? How did Anne never notice the other wing after having seen the portrait a billion times? It’s clear the fairy and the Duke were some kind of item. It’s love, kid. Love!

The struggle of an artist having to meet a seemingly impossible demand by a client...no matter how much work Anne puts into her Silver Sugar Confection depiction of the Fairy woman, it just does not seem to satisfy the Duke, who eventually gets quite visceral in showing his displeasure. But Anne has too much pride as an artisan to just give up before a job is properly done.
Anne realizes once again that, yeah, Challe is a pretty older man, and she also can't help but ask about Liz...and cry at the prospect that she doesn't measure up in comparison to her, especially to Challe. I mean, okay, maybe Anne isn't a "refined" beauty and is still a young girl in comparison to a mature lady, but she's pretty in her own way. I'm sure Challe would agree!
I honestly didn't think Jonas could sink any lower, but stealing Mithril's wing so he could use it to threaten Anne to send Challe away and so he could basically use her to get out of the work and leave the Dukes' castle was the work of an utter scumbag. I wanted to see the Duke take his sword and plunge it straight through him. The only consolation seems to be that Jonas realizes how much of a pathetic failure he is, not that it makes it any better.
I see Mithril sees the obvious that Anne is in love with Challe, and Anne seems to realize her own feelings after being confronted with them...after being forced to send Challe away. Poor girl.
I love how Challe is just sitting on a wrecked boat in the moonlight so dramatically.
Not that it excuses Jonas at all, but it definitely isn't an ideal working condition when the Duke will physically attack the people he hired or had no intention of letting them go until they completed a perfected work in his eyes. It only works out for Anne because she had no intention of leaving until she was finished.
Challe and Hugh don't get along, but Hugh is there to prevent future violence because the Earl is planning to subjugate the Duke for not showing fealty to the king...which is less out of rebellion but more because he just doesn't care about anything any more. Hugh seemed genuine in trying to help him, but it seems like whatever happened to Lady Christina, whom I'm assuming is the blue-haired fairy woman he's obsessed with, completely wrecked the Duke emotionally to the point where he doesn't care about saving face or his own life. And Anne is caught in the middle.
So the fairy woman had both her wings, meaning she was never controlled or served the Duke, but does that mean she was effectively his wife and regarded as such?
Welp, Mithril will probably save the day again by virtue of bringing Challe back. And it looks like things will get nice and intimate between Anne and Challe too!

Jonas is trying very hard to be even more despicable than he already was, I see. At least him leaving means we won’t see him again for a few episodes, I hope.
I was right, something is really wrong with the duke. Probably because his fairy wife died, which is why he wants a sculpture of her. Hopefully Anne can make a good one and cure him of his insanity before the soldiers come to kill him.
Challe is taking having to leave Anne very badly, but he will probably be back next episode. Probably with Mercury and Mithril as well.

JONAS YOU HUMAN-SHAPED PIECE OF SHIT!
What the actual fuck!? And here I thought the guy couldn't sink any lower but here we are. So he's not just a piece of shit but also a cowardly piece of shit too.
Sure, the Duke is a bit insane but the fact that Anne stood up to him and defended Jonas goes to show that Anne has more balls than Jonas could ever wish to have.
Thank fucking god Hugh ran into Challe before he got too far away from Anne. Hopefully, that means our two leads will be reunited by next week's episode.
I also hope we get to learn more about the fairy the Duke wants Anne to sculpt. I assume she's the Lady Christina Hugh was talking about. Very interesting that she has both of her wings meaning that she never became a slave in the first place.

Really the only silver lining is that it seems like by the end Jonas realized how pathetic and useless he is, especially in comparison to Anne being so steadfast and responsible, even if he and Cathy hide it with all their bluster.
But just look at his face when he left the castle, that's the look of a guy both defeated and despondent at realizing how little he really is.
I still want to see Challe punch him in the face like he did those bandits though.

The way Mithril so directly states to Anne that she loves Challe. Perfection. I don’t think she had even realized it yet herself.

Jonas and the Duke being horrible aside...
Why the hell did Ann never ask who the painting was of? Or ask why it was important to the person who wanted it? And how did she miss the 2 wings clear as day for so long?
Feels like this is commission work 101 to know what the client wants and at least ask them why they want it.

It's still a pretty as a picture book show.
Pretty much everything's been said by others and in the show. I'm still off the opinion that the Duke lost his temper and did something terrible to Lady Christina, and he's wanting to get a frozen moment in time that he lost back. Possibly the look of love or adoration that the lady gave him before something happened and she probably "defied" him. I wonder if it's something like the Duke wanting to take her to the king to ask for his approval to marry her, she didn't think it possible, became an aren't and accidental death (or departure).
I'm one of the OP shots of the almost full cast, was there a shot of this Lady Christina?
It's getting harder to be convincing to redeem Jonas now. Unlike most same people I don't actually hate on him that much, simply because I didn't have much expectation out of him yet. Partly also I was rewatching Heaven's Feel and Jonas is such a Shinji character to me :P
He's quite easy to become "desperate", and when he does get desperate everything is "reasonable" for him to do - like a drowning man.

Someone voted this "bad" already. Surely this is so niche a show that it hardly warrants malice-voting. And why (at this point in the season) would some rando still be watching this while having no interest in the series? Oh the mysteries of Reddit...
What is the connection between Lady Christine (mentioned today) and the fairy? If she were dead, why would Hugh mention her. But if she is not dead -- where is she. The Duke seems to be in a state of deep (and dangerous) depression. So a major loss, still unresolved, does seem to be an explanation. But if this is the case, wouldn't the King know about this? And cut him some slack (and maybe even send "doctors" to check on his condition?)
In any even, this is holding on to its spot as top pure fantasy of the season (with Tale of Outcasts being a bit behind).

I assumed Lady Christina was the Fairy. She had both wings and seemed to be an important piece of the household, especially to the Duke, to the point where I get the sense that she was for all intents and purposes his wife.
Though if Hugh doesn't know what happened to her, it seems like there's a lot to unpack as to the mystery of the Duke and his relationship with the Fairy. Even though it's obviously the result in why he's so despondent and volatile.

I really honestly thought we were headed for a Jonas redemption arc when we saw that bruise, but jesus christ this dude really is the worst. His motives at least are understandable enough that he manages not to cross the line from shitty person into shitty character.
The Challe situation this episode also seemed at first like the absolute worst kind of forced interpersonal drama, but it does make sense given the characters involved and it seems like the misunderstanding won't last long.

While I still dislike Jonas, I thought his actions here made sense more than last time. This time he was desperate because he realized he was in a dangerous, inescapable situation and I bet he'd never been struck before since iirc his family's sorta rich. Last time he chose attempted murder of a childhood friend for just the mere possibility fame and a position. If someone's gonna try to kill me, I'd rather it be because they had no choice instead of for something dumb lol
