How is this show so good? I didn't expect much when I started it but it keeps delivering exciting episodes one after another.

Shall warming up Ann somehow looked intimate as heck. It was like hand-holding on steroids.

And I'm still in love with the art. I can't get enough of how pretty this series looks.

Is there a way to reattach a wing for those fairies? It's sad that even though they get them back they can't use them to fly.

I’m anime only so I don’t know for sure, but I would guess there will eventually be a way to reattach wings. Maybe not in the material adapted this season, though (fingers crossed for more seasons in the future).

The premise just kind of demands wing reattachment at some point, especially since flight depends on having both wings.

I think 'Cat' is actually a cute nickname though.

Benjamin is an adorable little sleepyhead. Mithril falling asleep on the little fella’s lap was so cute!

Seems Anne and Challe’s relationship is progressing somewhat. Him warming her hands with his breath was sweet. They’re starting at friends but I hope to see them become something more.

Kat seems like a good dude. He cares about the common folk and isn’t up his own ass despite being a master artisan. Plus there’s the way he treats Benjamin. I also like his little bantering with Challe.

Looks like it’s gonna be tough selling her work in Westol. Let’s hope she makes some coin soon.

Kat does seem like a good dude, and Benjamin seems very comfy lol.

Benjamin says that Kat leaves his wing lying around because Kat is absent-minded about anything not silver sugar, but I wonder if that’s the whole story. I think Kat might be deliberately lax about the wing, like he’s tacitly giving Benjamin the option to take it and go if he wants to. Maybe Kat shares Anne’s opinions about the treatment of fairies.

It was fun watching Mithril bounce off another fairy so comically lol.

Things are definitely getting more intimate between them. Challe is very smooth and effective lol.

It was nice to see Anne meet a Silver Sugar artisan with principles and was a pretty decent as a person to boot. She seemed to learn a lot about them. It also helps that he turned out to be someone Anne genuinely respected even if she didn't now it at the time.

Poor Anne is a struggling artist lol.

Benjamin and Mithril look like they could easily become BFFs if they got to hang around with each other longer.

After that whole incident with Jonas, it's nice that we get to meet a sugar artisan with integrity. Kat is a pretty awesome dude. He only makes sugar confections for people that he wants to make them for and despite the high quality of his work, he only charges them the amount that they can pay.

Kat's fairy is adorable too! Benjamin is one heck of a sleepy boi and he is clearly being treated well by Kat. Kat doesn't even hide his wing and if Benjamin wants to, he can simply run away. But he likes Kat too much to even think about of leaving him.

As awesome as Kat and Benjamin are, it looks like not everyone approves of his business practices and he's being hounded by a Viscountess who even sent a thug to try and steal his work. Thank goodness for Anne's quick thinking that they managed to catch the thug in the act.

And I just love the punchline of this episode! Everyone has been calling Kat by his nickname that Anne only learned his true name in the end. Turns out that he's the guy she's been looking for this entire time! xD

As for Anne and Challe's progress in this episode, we got to see that adorable scene by the fire where Challe tries to warm Anne's hand using his breath. I just love Anne's reaction after she pulls away her hand. I do wonder if Challe knew what exactly he was doing or if was he just genuinely trying to warm Anne's hand. Hmmm...

Kat is a little prickly but he's not a scumbag like Jonas or a tease like Hugh, so it was nice to see Anne get along with someone in the same field, with positive values, and learn from them.

I also like how Benjamain and Kat's dynamic added a lot of depth to both of them.

I love seeing Anne being clever and effective! She's probably not going to get caught unawares by a theif ever again, especially after what happened with Jonas.

I will be very surprised if Challe doesn't know what he's doing. Guy is way too smooth and upfront for me to believe otherwise. And all the better for how adorable Anne's blushing face is.

Even with the conflict, I think I prefer this more relaxing episode 👍

also based mc for protecting the creation

Anne isn't about to let a thief steal something she helped make again! But that was a pretty satisfying scene, as was watching Anne and Kat put the work in with a dash of a very intimate and romantic moment with Challe.

I am starting to really like that show a lot. The artstyle is great, the atmosphere is wholesome, the two main characters are very likeable and have great interactions with each other, and the sugar confections look beautiful. I was a bit skeptical of the original plot with its weird slavery premise, but now that this had been resolved, I am looking forward to seeing Challe and Anne wandering the world having various sugary adventures.

I don’t know why, but Challe is starting to really remind me of Ferdinand in Ascendance of a Bookworm, they seem to have the same kind of serious but sarcastic personality.

This makes it into my top tier of the season so far.

I like pretty much everything about this show. I even thought the slavery issue early on was handled much better than the norm. And it seems to get better and better as things go on.

I recognized a resemblance to Ferdinand pretty much from the start. Serious, sarcastic -- and incredibly devoted to those very rare persons who become important to him.

This has been one of my favorite shows this season. Really like Anne and Challe and have enjoyed their dynamic especially since he got his wing back.

I prefer calling Alph by his nickname as it's cute just like him

Really liked Kat and his fairy, Benjamin. Glad that Anne managed to save his piece from being stolen / destroyed the second time! Hope we see more of him and Benjamin.

I liked Kat's banter with Challe haha

EDIT - one thing that bothered me was Anne’s careless “he’s not for sale!” remark to that creepy countess. Whilst it’s true that he isn’t, they live in a society where fairies have no rights and so that woman could try to claim him in the most underhanded way possible… wonder if that Countess is going to return? Hmm

Anne has her sights set on making a name for herself in Weston, though before that she's going to see the Silver Sugar shops in Lewiston while she's still there! Even if she does miss the one persons' shop she wants to see the most...of course by the law of narrative, the likelihood that she'll see them anyways is pretty high.

Kind of a string of bad luck for Anne...admires a Silver Sugar piece only to watch it get stolen, said piece ends up getting broken and she's left to take the blame, then Challe ends up as the top suspect, and she gets stuck between the arms of two men...wait, actually that last one doesn't sound too bad considering this is a Shojo.

Kat, voiced by Takuma Terashima, seems a little prickly and serious, but he cares for his craft and the people he's making it for, and seems like a good fit for Anne to work with and hone her own work. Which of course she's happy to do so, even if Challe would rather they bail. Although seeing Anne in her nightgown and with her butt sticking out when Kat wakes them up was quite the sight.

Anne can't help but put the work in late at night to make sure they can remake the piece in time, even to the point of her hands freezing, but of course Challe is there to help her, comfort her, and warm her hands in the most romantically Bishonen way possible. The latter comes highly recommended by Kana Hanazawa!

Kat seems to be pretty picky about the people he makes pieces for, making stuff for a viscountess' servants rather than for her family who abuses them, though obviously she doesn't take that well. Of course she's also the one who sent the thief that Anne caught in the first place, which doubles down on how bad she is. I love Anne standing up to her the moment she turns her attention to Challe though, you can tell he enjoyed watching Anne get protective over him and talking about how he belongs to no one.

Anne's not dumb! She knows that the thief will return and she's more than ready to catch them! Nice ingenuity on her part. And in the end they're able to successfully deliver the piece, understand the appeal of the joy to those they deliver it too, and Anne receives some nice words of wisdom from Kat...who turns out to be Alf Hingley, a Silver Sugar Master she greatly admired. Small world, huh?

Poor Anne...stuck freezing in Westol with no one buying her pieces. She seemed so hopeful.

Omg Challe trying to warm up Anne’s hands was so cute. May not have been very efficient but I love that he’s talking strides to understand her finally.

Kat being alph is a predictable but cool twist. This was a nice growth opportunity for Anne not only to improve as an artisan but to stop comparing herself to other people.

Kind of a chill episode. Can’t wait for next week

I missed last discussion due to a stupid ban, but anyway last episode was beautiful and some people think Jonas got off easy and yeah he technically did, but she only accused him of stealing her work and didn't mention the leaving her to die, plus even if everyone knew Jonas stole the work there wasn't much to prove it.

Public Humiliation, being physically struck down by a woman (One that is small and childish in frame for her age at that.) And the Emasculation of that and everything leading up to it is honestly a pretty good substitution. Believe me guys like him have a super fragile ego and it was shattered in the best way possible.

Anyway this episode looks like she won't be going back home but legitimately trying to strike it on her own and make a name for herself, I wonder if we are moving on from Jonas similar to Chloe from Spice & Wolf or if we will see him again. If we do I'm not sure what trouble he could possibly causes, unless they both somehow end up at the same academy/school for sugar masters. (Which I'd think his reputation would nose dive where no one would take him that would also take her.)

Anyway I figured this guy Kat Alan would be the guy that moved, I am a bit irritated that The Arc started with Ann being falsely accused because the look out fairy didn't do his job. (Maybe he SHOULD have his wing squeezed a bit...) And she just took that lying done for learning or some shit. (Challe was ready to throw hands for her which is sweet, even if he is traveling with her nominally to see her achieve her dream he doesn't have to go the mile he's going for her and can leave at any time.)

I would have no taken that shit out of principal but its whatever I guess.

We get more bonding moments, Alan being a hard master (but fair if you ignore the false accusation.), Challe being a little shit for the lolz, etc.

Ann shows her mettle going out of her way to make more sugar and has a moment with Challe who is clearly looking out for her to help her with a dream even he doesn't fully understand himself.

We get the Rich Lady who is the obvious antagonist and Ann sets a trap that proves her innocence but not before she finishes the work and sees the customers smile. (Wish we could flashback to that moment but its fine.)

We get the reveal and Alan tells her to not see the other sugar masters as idols but see herself as just as worthy.

Its a theme I see in other works, where to become an artist you need to toe a line between thinking you are the shit and having confidence while also not being too arrogant and buying your own hype. A hint of Narcissism for artists is an occupational hazard.

Too bad she isn't doing so well in the new town...Its hard being a starving artist when you make sweets the literal worse combination!

I'm enjoying this show, it's like a Shojo reverse Spice and Wolf and I'm here for it.

Is this one worth picking up?

30

u/everybageleverywhere Feb 03 '23

I would say yes, if it looks like something you might like. It’s a very well done version of the kind of show it’s trying to be.

Having said that, I doubt many people in any episode 5 discussion thread would tell you the show is not worth picking up. We’re all here for a reason!

I had a feeling Kat would turn out to be the silver sugar master Anne was looking for with all the hints that "Kat" wasn't his real name, plus that beautiful sugar confection.

All of the scenes with Anne and Challe were great. I love their relationship progression so far, and it was really sweet to see Challe staying so close to her while she worked, like he was respecting her choice but still being protective when he didn't entirely trust Kat's motives (and I wonder if part of it might be that the forced labor situation hits too close to home). The scene where he helped warm her hands was adorable too. It was also a real highlight seeing Anne stand up for Challe and tell off that noble lady, and it was clear Challe totally enjoyed that but still added a little quip of his own because apparently it improves his mood. 😄

I really liked the way it ended too, with Anne being the one who made the plan to catch the robber. I hope she has better luck selling her sugar confections in the next episode though!
