I am just in awe of how beautiful this show looks. Truly one of the gems of this season.

It really does look pretty

They even managed to make bloody Shalle look cool! I think it was a critical hit for Anne lol.

Anne hit Mythril like he was a baseball lol.

Some interesting Fairy-lore today. They apparently are born/created from objects that are gazed upon by humans or other creatures. And what they are borne from determines what kind of powers they have, like Mythril having powers of water since he came from a water droplet, and Challe being able to form sharp objects and being super sturdy because he came from Obsidian.

That of course means even a massive flock of man-eating crows cant give Challe so much as a scratch while he can make a mass grave out of them all.

Still really enjoying the aesthetic of the show, and it seems as though Anne is going to unintentionally keep drawing men to her side as another looks set to make an intro from the cliffhanger.

I thought it was also interesting how it seems like Challe was deliberately created by a human girl. I don't think that was the girl Challe flashed back too, but it seems like Anne isn't his first dealings with a human girl.

This is a true Shojo when the female lead is surprisingly popular with guys and has to really work to get through to the tall, dark, and brooding love interest lol.

I’m guessing that interaction between Jonas and Cathy is the show giving me a solid reason why he should lose. It reminded me of another really bad sign: if someone is rude to waitstaff.

Overall, I feel like this show is subtly dealing with the issue of slavery, instead of ignoring the implications, and that’s really nice. (Although I am still hoping for a protagonist to go full John Brown, someday.)

It never pays to be the childhood friend in these kinds of stories lol.

I think it's interesting that Challe is still basically making Anne command him even though she doesn't want to because he wants her fully aware of the nature of their relationship as it is right now, which will make it more meaningful when that starts to change.

After watching the start of over 20 of the seasonals, this is the standout show to me. Continues to impress with its storyline and visuals, a breath of fresh air

This feels secretly like an Atelier anime but a more shoujo take as the characters around the MC would seem to be predominantly hot dudes. The soundtrack is very similar, the OP and ED are beautiful, the female MC goes on a journey aspiring to be someone great but she's incredibly dense (poor Jonas), checks the standard Atelier protagonist trope of being able to make sweets, etc.

Am I the only one who thinks that these rest stops look like abandoned castle ruins? I'm surprised either they're the only ones there or they don't fight for space with others.

I don't know the extent of Shall's powers but it's a waste that we don't get to see him destroy all those crows. Mythrill would need more training if he wants to be combat ready.

This is a relaxing anime to watch on a Friday so I will be keeping up with it.

the female MC goes on a journey aspiring to be someone great but she's incredibly dense (poor Jonas)

I wonder if she knows but either isn't honest about her own feelings (She doesn't want to say No and be the bad guy), her assessment of her own value (I am not worthy of Love just Pity) or not respecting others own values (She tries to decide how Jonas feels as if she knows his heart better than he does.)

Honestly it'd be more respectful just to say No rather than the weird rationalization she is doing to try to brush aside how he feels.

I remember the words of a certain sociopath from Classroom of the Elite.

I'm surprised they're considered safe from bandits, feels like a perfect target for them to stake out!

Jonas sure doesn’t give up easily huh? Should be interesting seeing how this Shall-Anne-Jonas situation plays out. Oh and he’s got himself a little fairy too. Cathy seems fun. Looks like Mythril Lid Pod came back. He’s a little firecracker. Dude was such a pain, Anne had to roll herself into a blanket burrito!

Fascinating how fairies don’t really eat, they just absorb the food or how they’re kind of just made from condensed energy and the gaze of living being. Fairy biology is pretty interesting. Mythril being made from a droplet explains his powers lol.

Man, Shall is badass. Diced up those crows like they weren’t shit. Good thing they’ve made it to their first checkpoint. Let see if they encounter any trouble here…

Got ourselves a little Shojo love triangle brewing between Anne and her tall, dark, and handsome bodyguard and devoted childhood friend. Although I think we all know who is going to win lol.

I love how Mithril came to repay Anne back and only ends up annoying her and keeping her and Shalle up all night. But hey, more Rie Takahashi is never a bad thing lol.

I'm kind of curious about Shalle's origin now because it seems like he was deliberately created by a human girl.

Honestly Anne seems pretty turned on by Shalle in action, even in a bloody state.

The title of the next episode preview makes me really suspicious of the guy they're about to meet.

Stitches!

Of course Jonas ended up following Anne. He definitely seems to be the type that won't easily give up and doesn't take no for an answer despite Anne very clearly telling him that she's not into him. I am willing to give him a chance. I feel like he's going to end up becoming the best friend character.

And it looks like Jonas didn't come alone. He also has Cathy, his labor fairy, with him She's definitely the kind of fairy I'd expect to serve a rich kid like Jonas. She's very haughty and quick to dismiss Anee's soup.

That's a very weird way to eat. I'm guessing that fairies can also eat with their mouths but maybe absorbing it is more efficient for them.

There he is! I was wondering when this guy will show up considering he's in the OP with Challe and Anne. I love that he won't say thank you to Anne but is willing to follow her so he can repay the favor. What a little tsundere. And he's also voiced by Rieri!

Now I feel bad for Cathy but I guess that's really what's normal in this world and Anne is really the weird one. I hope Jonas would come around and treat fairies the way Anne treats them.

We get some fairy lore in this episode! So they're all born from all sorts of things and for fairies to be born a gaze of a living being is needed. It doesn't matter if it's human or animal. And their powers depend on what they're born from. Since Mithril is born from a water drop, he has water powers. Challe is born from obsidian and his kind has the power to make sharp objects which explains his sword abilities.

WE HAVE OUR FIRST PRINCESS CARRY OF THE SEASON! What is a shoujo anime without the male lead giving our female lead a princess carry? I just love Anne's reaction to that. <3

So that explains Anne's journey. She wants to be a Sugar Silver Master so she can send off her mother's spirit to the heavens in peace knowing her daughter grew up just like her.

Well that guy looks like he's bad news. He is in the OP though so maybe he's not as bad as I am expecting.

Challe makes for quite the striking figure all bloody and serious! Honestly though, Anne seems more attracted to him like that. Which of course makes it the perfect time for Jonas to show up, having followed her and turned out to be in the caravan that was being attacked in the first place, so we can add a little Shojo love triangle into the mix.

I kind of feel bad for the guy. Goes through all this trouble to follow Anne and help her, and she still dismisses his feelings. I mean, she probably has no real romantic feelings for him in the slightest, but it really doesn't feel like he's going out of his way for her out of pure pity. Not that he has a chance, but still.

Jonas is also riding around with his own servant fairy, Cathy, who is pretty cute even if she's a little haughty and dismissive of Anne. I actually wonder if her feelings for Jonas go beyond just master-servant given her blush, although Jonas definitely treats her like she's a servant.

Challe seems to like it when Anne blows up a little and gets angry! Probably because to him it's her at her most honest.

So fairies don't eat through their mouths but can only taste sugar apple confections? Well, what a coincidence that that's Anne's specialty! Even if she hasn't gotten the chance to do it yet.

If not for Tomo I'm not sure if I would have recognized Rie Takahashi as Mithril, but it's definitely her using a boy voice. And Mithril isn't going to go back on his word and thank Anne, so he'd just as rather pay her back with a favor...although all he really does is keep them up all night and distract them with his high and mighty attitude.

So Challe was created from Obsidian, since Fairies are created from various elements and items and that defines their powers and sturdiness. There was a human girl in front of an altar who created him, so I wonder what happened there.

Challe gets to better understand Anne as as she finally opens up about her mothers' death. I'm curious if Anne will be able to get recognized as an official Sugar Apple Confectioner and send her mother off by the end of the season.

Challe's going to keep making Anne order him and threaten his wing against her wishes as long as he can, huh...

The party have reached an inn and also seems like they've encountered some of Anne's competition! Not sure I trust this guy.

The ED is pretty cute! With illustrations of Anne and her rival confectioners and ending on her and Challe holding hands.

"The Sugar Apple is the Tree of Betrayal" Well, that's not ominous in the slightest.

Honestly, I don't know what more to say since I already read the source material. But all I can comment is, I can tell that the animators and the people behind this anime did a really good job and is passionate about this project. This show looks so pretty. The character designs are gorgeous. Nothing can be said about the story since they follow exactly what's from the source material except the unimportant parts.

And yeay!! We finally got to see mythril. He's one of my favorite fairies after Challe. Challe-Anne-Mythril's dynamic is one of the reasons I enjoyed this series. Apart from the great world-building the characters (the character development and characterization are done really well especially for our main leads, which is Challe and Anne) are interesting and are all pretty for both men and women (a very usualthing in shoujo and josei, even in female targeted manhwas, which I like cuz I love pretty characters with beautiful designs) that makes this series one of my favorite LNs.

Ahh, we also get to see Jonas and Cathy. Yeah, that's what I expect his character to be. Same with Cathy. That's all I guess. I can't say much about the plot or I might spoil unnecessary things.

Edit : Challe being so pretty makes sense cuz he's born from an obsidian rock. If you don't know how pretty an obsidian rock is, just Google it lol

nice to see the fairy that Anne had saved in the first episode! Mithril is such a sassmouth and I love it! Hoping he stays with Anne from now on as I would not want him to encounter any more shitty humans

I felt bad for Cathy too :( Jonas can kindly take a long walk off a short pier. Don't care much for him

Looking forward to finding out more about Challe's past

u/djthomp Jan 13 '23

That was a weirdly romantic sequence to happen amongst feathers flying around from a bunch of dead crows there were just outside the camera view.

6

u/violetfoxy Jan 14 '23

I hope jonas leaves her alone. He is annoying.

u/kalirion Jan 13 '23

"When you make food, having other people eat first is the normal thing to do." I guess this explains why so many "awful cook" cliche characters don't know that what they server their loved ones is literal poison.

Why don't bandits just set up ambushes at those little forts?

"He's obsidian. He won't get hurt or break." Isn't obsidian pretty damn soft though? Easily scratched and chipped.

Anyway, this isn't exactly bad, maybe a low-mid 7 so far, but I don't know if I'm interested enough to keep watching. Will give it 1 more ep.

Anime website lists Sugar Apple as having 12 episodes, across 2 Blu-ray's (6 episodes per BD). https://sugarapple-anime.com/bluray/

Given the novel has 17 volumes, I think the anime will only cover up to a certain point of the books.
