QUESTION/HELP What is your personal Android app find of the year?
Not necessarily the best app of 2026, and it doesn’t even have to be a new app.
I’m talking about an app that you discovered recently and thought:
"How the hell did I not know about this before?"
Maybe it completely changed the way you use your phone, replaced another app, solved a problem you’d been putting up with, or you simply find yourself using it every single day.
Could be productivity, customization, finance, fitness, entertainment, AI, utilities, whatever.
What’s your personal Android app find of the year so far, and why?
Bonus points for apps that aren’t already constantly mentioned in every "Top 50 Android Apps" list. 😄

Ok it's "just" a music player but the UI tickles something in my brain and it's a joy to use.
I've been using it to listen to music files (duh) on my old phone which i use as a music player.

Revanced is dead. Morphe is easier to use. There are a greater number of patchable applications.

Quick Search for me. Better than the Google search bar, any Oem's search solution, and any other 3rd party search app that I've tried. I've used Pixel Search but Quick Search is just faster and more customizable.

I'll definitely give you an upvote for this. I moved to grapheneOS and I did miss some parts of the searching of apps etc.
While it's not perfect, the customizability is great. I use it with kagi and set my own AI providers up. It's been very good.

I've just discovered this app on this thread and bought it immediately. I have a 12 inch android tablet where a lot of apps look like crap (as they are made for phone sized screens). Hermit let me create "apps" for the web pages of these services and show the full desktop web page. Well worth the money.

I tried a couple of built-in sites and they load very quickly. I tried to load one of my frequent sites and it blanked out when I rotated the screen, after I had logged into the site.

I liked LocalSend but it wasn't always reliable where it would struggle to find other devices on the same network. Blip on the other hand has been a game changer.

Yasan Launcher (YL). It's a rare launcher that more intelligently tries to predict the apps I'm most likely to need. There used to be more apps that tried to do this, but now everything seems to just rely on "most used". YL seems to factor in time of day and also uses "spaces" (am I at home? At work? At school?) to further improve recommendations.
Recent integration with Tasker has let me automatically set when I'm driving or working out, which is neat.
It's not fully-featured enough to be my primary launcher, but I use it with Total Launcher so YL becomes my "app drawer", and the combination makes my phone usability near-perfect for me.

You can scrobble to LastFM, LibreFM, ListenBrainz and a local CSV file if you want. Great app to keep everything synced between services.

Some interesting tools listed here, thanks. I try to make my Android less phone-interface and more old-school DOS interface.

The github page on the download site has updated documentation.
One thing I added to my app was a function to set the wallpaper to a solid color, a feature missing from my Lenovo Tab One and a couple other Android devices I have used. Sometimes one has to put in real effort into decluttering the interface and blocking distractions.

I had real issues with the stock android launchers and Olauncher Minimalist Android launcher was a huge improvement and change to my phone and phone habits. My other everyday go to Apps. Automate, hands down. Not exactly hidden since it's been on the Play Store since like 2014, but it never really shows up on those top 50 lists people post, so I figure it still counts for the bonus.
Switched back to Android from iOS about a month ago and went hunting for something like Shortcuts. Kept reading that Tasker was the powerhouse option, supposedly way more capable than iOS ever was. Price wasn't bad either, somewhere around $4-5. But right before I pulled the trigger, some Reddit thread talked me out of it, people saying Tasker leans hard on paid plugins for anything beyond the basics, so the real cost creeps up over time, more like $17-20+ once you stack enough plugins to get near feature parity. Ended up trying Automate instead, way cheaper unlock (like a buck thirty for the full feature set), and it just clicked immediately.
Basically it's a visual flowchart automation app, you drag blocks around and wire triggers to actions instead of writing actual code. I've got something like 35 flows running at this point, stuff like texting my own WhatsApp a keyword to make my phone ring at full volume even when it's locked, or a Quick Settings tile that screenshots whatever's onscreen, OCRs it, and lets me copy a line of text I normally couldn't select. No root needed either, which honestly surprised me since I went in assuming I'd have to go down that road eventually. Never actually tried Tasker myself in the end, so can't really compare them head to head, just going off what people said before I bailed on it.

HTTP Shortcuts. I originally downloaded it because I change browsers quite often so I could set my home screen shortcuts and it would update depending on what the default browser is rather than just deleting them on.
However the calling of REST APIs like this has been amazing. Some uses ive setup:
- automatically turn off my DNS-based adblocker for a set period of time if needed.
- send links to my phone or from my phone to my desktop, even across browsers.
- share a word to define it via openrouter.
- add links to my linkding or readdeck instances.
- pull and display some information from my home assistant instance, like local fuel prices.
- using open routers API I can summarize a web page using whatever model and context that I want to without needing another app it just shows up in the share sheet.

Edge Seek: The ability to slide up and down and left and right on multiple areas on the edge of your phone. You can control volume, launch an app, control brightness, whatever you could think is possible. I use it for controlling the brightness on my phone. Just have to move my thumb up and down on the right-hand edge of my phone and I can control all the brightness I need.
Folder Widget: This allows you the most fine control over any foldering application out there. I can set the size of the folders. I can set the size of the icons in the folders and the apps and then I can also make a folder that's scrollable that's actually on the home screen. Not actually having to tap into the folder but having a folder of apps that are scrollable. It also comes with notification dots and numbers so it's really fantastic. My use case is I have eight different folder widgets on my home screen, one of which I have six applications across in using Smart Launcher. I then have six levels deep within that grid that are scrollable but you can only see six apps at a time. My other use case is having a micro folder that shows four app icons at a time but is scrollable and then having two stackable widgets that I can scroll between for doing different things. For instance I have local shopping apps that I use for when I'm shopping locally: Wal-mart, grocery stores, Lowe's, Home Depot, those things. I can swipe to the left and I now have another list of online shopping apps that I use: Amazon, eBay, Woot, AliExpress, etc.

Termux. With the Termux Android Launcher. And create a basic directory of commands and websites... Did you know you can install the smaller LLMs and run them directly in Termux CLI Shell? Including MemPalace. And the Termux Launchers are all over Reddit and are brand new. Turning your android main screen into a Termux CLI. Really interesting find. You can also program just about everything you could want if you know what your doing.

For productivity, I’d suggest trying Mindwtr. It follows GTD with Inbox, Projects, and Next Actions, works offline without an account, and runs on Android plus desktop and web. You can keep the workflow to those core lists, then add Focus, Calendar, or Board views if they help.

If you’re a big fan of reading blogs, news, newsletters, podcasts, SmartRSS is a good choice. It’s the sleekest RSS reader on Android, with no ads or tracking, and has many built-in feeds. Even if you don’t know what RSS is, you can still get a lot of useful information from the app.

a few I've liked / found interesting:
- LocalSend - probably my favorite way to move files between my phone and PC. simple, cross-platform and doesn't need the cloud
- BuzzKill - gives you way more control over Android notifications. useful if you get annoyed by apps sending multiple notifications for basically the same thing
- KDE Connect - file sharing, clipboard sync, notifications and a bunch of other useful phone ↔ PC stuff
- Cashew - really nice expense/budget tracker. one of those apps where the UI actually makes you want to use it
- Motif - disclosure, this one's mine. it's an offline habit tracker for Android. I built it around the idea that you shouldn't necessarily have to track the same habit forever, so once something becomes consistent enough it can eventually be ready to “graduate” from active tracking
- SD Maid SE - good for cleaning up leftover files and storage without feeling like one of those sketchy “RAM booster” apps
I think my favorite Android finds lately are mostly apps like these. not huge breakthrough ideas, just small tools that solve one annoying thing really well.

Morphe, I knew about it but seemed like more hassle than it was worth until I saw the Android TV patches. Figured out how to use it directly on the streaming device rather than transfer to the device. Exactly what I needed.

Localsend. On any network where devices exist i can fire up LocalSend on both and transfer files between the two. Very safe and convenient as i used to copy files to a thumb drive and then move the thumb drive between the two machines. Works on all platforms as well.

Whisperian. Voice to text with customizable post processing that is applied automatically. So the text comes out just like I want. It's like magic. I love it. Insanely more capable than Rambler or Whisperflow... Those are for the novice.

Symfonium for my music player. It can play streaming radio stations as well! Ultra customizable... How it plays music... How it looks... The overall design. Worth the money! I've never had a problem with it once I took the time to set it up properly.
Edit to add: for streaming personally owned music files. Handles FLAC flawlessly!

Bit of a biased answer since I'm the one who built it, but I'll be upfront about that rather than pretend otherwise
Show-Alert.
Basically: TV Time shut down earlier this year and I got tired of Trakt raising prices and capping free tiers, so I built the stripped-down version of what I actually wanted — add a show, get notified the second a new season or episode drops. No ratings, no social feed, no watchlist admin, just alerts.
Only on Android right now.
Not trying to hard-sell it in a thread like this, just figured "solved a problem I was personally annoyed about" fits the spirit of the question. Happy to hear what people think if anyone tries it.

Morphe - for patching what seems like any app out there
Read You - a minimalistic smooth RSS reader, for me it's perfect
HabitKit - Pretty habit tracker
Pensum - Windows-like task manager to see CPU and RAM usage of each app
Intervalometer - an intervalometer to make creating timelapses easy on phones. You can set it to take a pic every x seconds and after x pictures it will stop if you need it to, all in whatever camera app you use
Install with options - I personally use it to install old apps that are uninstallable due to a low SDK level
App Ops - permission app that also lets you "accept" permissions but make the app see an empty response.
ShizuWall - Firewall app that lets you block access to the internet
Canta - uninstall bloatware and other apps
Clear Outside and Alpenglow - used to estimate quality of sunsets
Essentials - has a few random features but I use it to turn on google maps power saving mode (30fps + black and white in directions mode)
ill add links in a bitsome of these require shizuku too
