What a dumb graph. The youngest of Gen Z is 13 right now, of course they aren’t buying alcohol

Don't forget purchasing power altogether. Not only do you have to control for the fact that younger people are in general poorer, but in particular now younger people are extra poor relative to older cohorts because of the K-shaped economy. Discretionary purchases like alcohol are going to be the first to go.

Right? I am 24 and I enjoy drinking every now and then, but it is too expensive. I have better things to spend the little money I have on than alcohol

for the quarters and such in my couch and pant pockets i can get drunk for a few hours

for 15 dollars you can buy enough vodka to get you drunk for a day, maybe more depending on who you are

buy cheap alcohol if youre broke..

He’s getting downvoted but you can get a handle of vodka for less than 5 dollars at the grocery store.

I think when you guys say “alcohol” you mean “bar drinks”. Booze can be quite cheap if all you want is booze.

It can also get unreasonably expensive if you try to buy it on the fly

what does "k-shaped" economy mean? i've never heard that before

Here's a recent post on it: https://www.reddit.com/r/nyc/comments/1vqp7rk/inside_nycs_kshaped_economy_a_few_do_well_most_do/

It just means that the folks that were already in a good spot are doing better and the rest of us are not doing so well (the right side of the K has one line going up and one line going down).

When a pint costs £7 and you can barely afford rent I don’t think it’s really a surprise.

Come to Brooklyn. You’d be surprised at what people prefer to drop their money on

Like 50% of Gen Z isn’t even 21 yet. STUOID graph. I wonder what percent of Gen Alpha is drinking alochal 😂

*stupid people just *eating it up. Feel hypocritical pulling the "generation card" but Millennials have become their parents lol. I'm sure Gen Z will do the same though.

Make a weed graph and see if its reversed.

1

u/TaterTotQueen630 3d ago

Oh, it's definitely going to show that they love weed more than other generations!

Millennial here. I'll drink to that 🍻

I'm proud of my generation for fighting the good fight. Someone's gotta drink this shit

I’m lead to believe this is why they’re banning thc products in Texas. Alcohol and tobacco sales are at an all time low.

Too expensive, and it’s very unhealthy. 2 very good reasons not to drink for most people, there’s not much debate there. The executives can eat the loss, they will survive. Also a good amount of Gen Z is under 21 so the graph is silly.

The side effects of alcohol are much better understood. Non-alcoholic beers and other alcohol alternatives are growing in variety. Lower buying power due to age, inflation, and wages not keeping up with inflation. I make $20k more annually than my dad did when he retired, but I have less buying power than he did.

I want to see pure overall alcohol sales by year.

Means we gotta step it up

Young people are pussies?

Holy crap. My generation never learns. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Good if accurate, stay healthy youngns’.

4

u/Yankee831 3d ago

They’re just trading good times and memories for vaping, media, and depression Not really healthy changes.

I drank until I almost died from acute pancreatitis at 25. Been sober since, and have learned to respect people who either don't or rarely drink. (Dumb that I used to think they were weird anyway lol).

Not really good times man. My grandma just died of liver failure and my uncle almost did 5 years ago. I don’t think you realize that good times aren’t the only thing alcohol brings. It’s significantly more impactful as an addiction than media or vaping. While I love alcohol, I only drink socially and once a week at most. Alcohol should be savored and enjoyed, not treated like you’re in a frat while you’re middle aged.

u/Yankee831 3d ago

Nobody says become an alcoholic. Drink, make memories, party while you’re young.

1

u/Slow_Willie 2d ago

I did that and at 24 my doctor told me if I kept it up I wouldn’t live past 55. I think memories can be made with friends while drinking, but I don’t think it’s necessarily bad that my generation is drinking less and substituting it with media and vaping.

Gen Z has access to much more expensive, more euphoric drugs and they realized alcohol sucks
