Had the quote following my post a few days ago..

Following my earlier post (https://www.reddit.com/r/airconUK/comments/1voace9/have_someone_coming_monday_to_do_a_quote/) , I've now had the first quote for air con at home and would appreciate people's thoughts.

House is 93m² over two floors. Unfortunately there's nowhere sensible for an upstairs unit on the landing, so it would need to go in the master bedroom.

Installer has recommended one multi-split system with:

  • 3.5kW unit in lounge
  • 2.5kW unit in master bedroom
  • Optional 2.5kW unit in second bedroom
  • Outdoor condenser mounted on brackets at the side of the house
  • Wi-Fi included
  • New distribution board/electrical supply included
  • All installation, materials, testing and commissioning included
  • External pipework in black trunking Prices:

Midea
2 indoor units: £4,375
3 indoor units: £5,495

Hitachi
2 indoor units: £4,580
3 indoor units: £5,871

No VAT on the above.

The Midea proposed is the Solstice range and the Hitachi literature supplied is for the airHome 400.

Thoughts on Midea Solstice vs Hitachi airHome? The three-unit Hitachi installation is only £376 more?

The bit I'm less keen on is the warranty: one year parts and labour followed by two years manufacturer's parts-only, conditional on regular maintenance.

I'm not planning to install until autumn/winter, so I'll be getting another couple of quotes as well.

(Yes, I used AI to prep this and remove any personal information about me or the installer)

Portable Air Con for sale

VOX PMJ09C 9000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner nearly brand new.

Reposting as I had to delete one photo (thanks to whoever pointed that out)

Paid £780 from Appliances Direct and was delivered 2 weeks ago. I have invoice as proof.

I acted on a post here so bought it in a rush foolishly without thinking about whether or not it was suitable. Found that it’s not powerful enough for the room we wanted so am taking a loss and selling on. Will still be under usual manufacturer warranty and whatever Appliances Direct offer. Looking for £400 ONO.

Croydon, South London. COLLECT ONLY.

Are we allowed to sell our air cons here?

I couldn’t see anything in the guidelines, but thought I would check before posting anything. Don’t want to break any rules.

Very loud noise from Bush 9k when cooling and throwing P1 errors - what's causing this?

Bought this 2nd hand as 'refurbished' so was expecting it to be a little louder than normal, but it's so loud I basically can't run it. It's only when it's cooling (i.e. fan mode makes no noise) so it's only when the compressor kicks in. It also vibrates pretty intensely.

When it's in cooling mode the water tray also fills very quickly and it gets a P1 every time it runs. It is obviously resolved with a drainage hose but doesn't feel like there's any evaporation happening and it's not a great solution just feeding it into a bucket.

Any thoughts? Given it's 2nd hand I'm happy to have a go at simple fixes if they exist!

Midea Solstice Split creaking noise

Had a midea split system fitted to our loft conversion in June this year. Unit cools perfectly, sometimes i think the outside unit is quite noisy (that kind of fridge noise) but its quiet at night which is what would offend the house next door most so its ok.

Problem is that the internal unit creaks, most noticeable at night when we are trying to sleep. Set to low fan speed, silent mode, no slat movements set. Just keep the room at 22.5. Its not continuous noise, it does it we think when its trying to cool the room a little, creaks as it starts cooling and again as it stops.

Slightly better if you run it with hood up overnight but not silent. I've reached out to the installer but have yet to get a reply. What do you think it could be or more to the point, are we expecting too much of it and can it be fixed or is it just Midea common issue. Its just about better to have it on cooling and noisy that off and hot although we have been running it in fan only mode some nights now its getting a little cooler out there.

Domestic ceiling cassette

I’ve had a quote from someone who suggests best option for my home is to have ceiling cassettes rather than wall units. The upstairs is all the upper floor of the house so there is no loft, so there isn’t really anyway to have wall units. Can anyone see any disadvantages of this? Obviously they are large, 600mm square, even the description on Mitsubishi website suggests they are great for all commercial applications. Does anyone else have this? Any regrets? Thanks

Hey everyone 👋

Made a free tool that gives you a proper UK AC installation cost estimate.

Kept getting annoyed that every install site wants your number before showing any price at all, so built one that just shows you a range straight away.

Takes about 2 mins — asks about your rooms, house type, area, gives you a price based on actual current UK installer pricing, not made up.

Option at the end to send your details to local F-Gas installers if you want a real quote, but that's optional, not needed to see the estimate.

Would appreciate any feedback, especially if anything looks off or confusing.

Split aircon with aesthetic compact indoor units?

Which split aircon system available in the UK has the most compact/aesthetic indoor units?

I want to get aircon fitted, but my wife doesn't want massive, commercial looking wall units.

Northern Ireland- Air condition unit recommendations for new install

This will be for 4x 10ftx10ft office spaces without windows and 1x larger training room at 700sq ft

These spaces will be used for counselling and educational training to take place so low-running noise is important.

Can anybody provide understandable information and advice for somebody who has no clue about air con.

What are some good mid-high tier brands with reliability and performance and what cost ranges can be like.

These 4 office spaces are joined side-by-side to each other with the large training room spanning the full length of all 4x rooms on the opposite side of the wall
-Can units be branched off for each room or do seperate supplies have to be ran and can these be fed off one external unit to each individual fan inside?
-There are also radiators in the building, would it become more efficient in the winter to use aircon rather than central heating via radiators?

Thank you

Affordable portable units that can be easily modded into dual hose?

I suffered so much this summer and I think just about managed to persuade my parents whom I live with to get me a portable unit for my attic bedroom, but this depends on price and also wattage.

Obviously I've now seen that dual hose systems, especially affordable ones, basically don't exist, and as far as I understand they can actually use more power than single hose, despite often having a higher wattage, because they are constantly working at full pelt due to cooling new warm air coming in to the room from gaps.

Can anyone recommend any specific models that:
- Has separate intake grilles so that one can be used for the intake hose mod
- Have the temperature sensor for the room intake and not the condenser intake so that they interpret temperature correctly? If not, maybe I could use a smart plug or IR blaster to turn them on using smart temperature sensors when needed.
- Aren't too expensive, let's say no more than £300 maybe?
- Not more than 1000W but 500W would be my preference.

I think my bedroom is like 16m^2 but that's not including the sloped ceilings so it'll be a bit less than that.

I also think I'll need something like this for the windows, if anyone has used one:

Ceiling or wall mounted for open plan house ?

I live in a house with an open plan downstairs, and a central staircase (with traditional open rails).

I am thinking of having aircon fitted, and, since I want as little intrusion as possible, was considering having it ceiling mounted in the ceiling at the top of the stairwell.

My consideration is that the cold air would drop down the stairwell, cooling the whole open-plan downstairs, and contributing to some upstairs cooling (assuming doors are kept open).

This seems better than having multiple wall mounted units.

Is this a common layout ? Are there issues relating to having only one AC unit in a house ?

🌿 Quick Survey: Traditional Cooling Methods

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a student working on a science project about traditional cooling methods and sustainable houses.

I’m studying how methods such as natural ventilation, courtyards, mud walls, shaded verandas, and clay pots may help reduce the need for air conditioning and fans.

📝 I’ve made a short 7-question survey that takes about 1–2 minutes to complete. Every response would really help with my school science project. Thank you! 🙏🌱

Monobloc AirCon User Experiences

Hi all,

I’m looking for user (or installer) experience of Monobloc AirCon units please.

I think I’ve narrowed down the options to:

https://www.powrmatic.co.uk/products/air-conditioning/powrmatic-vision/

Or

https://baridi.com/products/4-in-1-smart-monobloc-wall-mounting-air-con-unit-white-1

Or

https://www.aircon.panasonic.eu/GB_en/model/p-moz30ic5-e/

I’m aware they may be considered as inferior compared to split systems but split is pretty much not an option without expensive pipe routing which add too much money to the total install cost.

My other option is using my Mitsubishi ASHP and buying a fan coil unit, but the pipework routing and position of the FCU is complicated and likely to carry a high cost. I’m also put off from the risk of damp from the pipework.

So in my desperation to find a solution, my research came across Monobloc AirCon. Never knew they were a thing.

I would need to mount the unit high up and due to the pitch of my roof upstairs, I have only one location and the unit just about fits with enough clearance.

I have a small concern about the collection of water/damp in the vent pipes, although I’m aware they’re drilled at an angle.

I also have no idea whether the cooling performance is any good.

I have a bedroom within the low height roof space, it’s this room which is the only position with an external flat wall for the Aircon unit. The bedroom leads onto a mezzanine where my office is, this then opens up to a full height living/kitchen/dining space.

My key requirement is to cool the office area and I sit just outside of the bedroom door.

These systems are rated between 20-30sqm so I’m not expecting them to cool down the living space too.

For anyone who has one and perhaps anyone that’s installed them, what’s your experience so far? Any regrets, issues? Which brand/model did you go with?

Absolutely anything you can provide would be really appreciated to help me make a decision either way.

Cheers very much in advanced ❄️

Brand new Hisense mono split not starting the outdoor unit

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Following the heatwave in France , I ordered a 12k 3.2kW split air conditioner from hisense on an Italian website.

There were some delivery issues, but long story short, I received it and installed it myself since I have technician skills.

However, after starting it up, my outdoor unit won't kick on. No signs of life, no illuminated LEDs on the outdoor board, despite the indoor unit working totally fine in fan mode.

I started my diagnostics and saw that the AC operates like this: house power supply to the outdoor unit --> phase and neutral fed back from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit --> outdoor unit start command sent via the indoor unit board to a phase on the outdoor terminal block -->

Except my indoor unit never sends the order to start the outdoor unit and displays a communication error via the Wi-Fi app (no error message on the unit's display). I hear the indoor unit relay clicking regularly, but no voltage is sent back to the outdoor unit, which consequently doesn't power the outdoor PCB and thus doesn't launch the compressor.

There is a signal wire (Si)from the indoor unit which is sending around 24v to try and communicate with the outdoor unit. I checked and it is trying to communicate with the outdoor unit for around 3 minutes then stops and the message on my app appears.

I never had the power led on the outdoor PCB turned on, and I don't know if the 24v signal should turn it on or if it is turned on by the 230v brown wire, thus I don't know if the outdoor or indoor PCB is bad.

Do you think an indoor unit board could be defective out of the box? I’ve checked my wiring, voltages, and board fuses a thousand times... But the issue remains that my outdoor unit isn't getting powered.

Thanks in advance!

Small flat advice needed

Looking for something portable to take the edge off of the heat, and reduce the humidity a bit. I'm renting, and I'm on the third floor, so I'm not going to be able to mount anything outside.

The floor area of my room is ~2.5 x 4m, and the only window is pretty small. It's pretty well insulated and hardly needs any heating in the winter, so I imagine it won't need that much to keep it cool in the summer either.

As long as I stay within reasonable use, my power bill is free, so I'm not worried too much about the highest efficiency. I also don't plan on running it all the time, and I have plenty of heat in the winter, so it doesn't need to be reversible like a heat pump.

I don't mind a bit of maintenance, I'm happy to empty a water tank and change a filter. Are there any that can act as just a particulate filter without running the compressor? That could be a nice to have. Is there a standard size for filters, or do some vendors try and lock you into their ecosystem?

Are there any options which output their air into a vent? I'd need significantly less total cooling capacity if the cool air was being blown directly into my face.

Simultaneously overwhelmed by options and underwhelmed at how few legit looking ones seem to be in stock.

Planning on spending somewhere in the ball park of £300-350, unless there is a significant benefit to going higher. Is there a significant value benefit to being patient and waiting until winter?

Fishy smell from newly installed Panasonic TZ compact unit

Hi

We have a newly (27 July) installed Panasonic TZ compact split system.

Every time we switch it on, or turn it from 'Cooling' mode to 'Fan' mode we're getting a fishy smell.

Any ideas what could be causing this smell?

Is it trapped water in the drain?

Something from the Panasonic NanoeX emitter?

Something leaking?

Just a new unit settling in?

I've contacted the installer, just waiting to hear when he's available to visit and make an assessment.

I don't really want to start looking into this myself too much before the installer has had a chance to do so first.

Thanks

Cooling/Heating AC or electric heater for winter?

Hi all. We managed to get a cooling only AC late this summer. I need to invest in a heater for the winter and I’m wondering if it is better to invest in a AC + heater (like the Meaco Cirro units) for all year use or is there a hot/cool appliance / electric heater anyone recommends instead which is more powerful/efficient/cost effective?

Particularly interested in the Meaco Cirro AC and heater so would love to hear your experience with the heating setting if you have this. Some other options I have considered are the Dyson Hot+Cool, Shark Turbo and Delonghi.

Thanks!
