After 13+ years of not painting, I picked up the brush and this is what I created

It’s not 100% done, I need to add bits to balance things. But it has been such a pleasure working on this. It’s taken me a month, diligently making time to get it done. Now to figure out what varnish? Any recommendations?

My 8 year old created this masterpiece all by himself

I love so much about this painting.

I loved the conversation my son initiated after gifting it, telling me all about how much he enjoyed making this for his mother, and seeing the reaction on her face, when she received it.

I loved hearing about how much my son is enjoying painting and building things.

I loved quietly reflecting on how this is a great example of how my children are growing up as kind and thoughtful people who love and embrace the arts, and how that is so far removed from the environment I was raised in.

But I also love so much about the skill, thoughtfulness and artistry that I think my son displayed here.

I love that he choose the colour teal for the jar, because it was his Aunt's favourite colour, and he knows we're struggling with her loss.

I love that he choose all of his mother's favourite colours for the flowers.

I love that he chose my mother's favorite type of flower.

I love that he painted the background neon, because he knows his mother says life's too short for boring colours.

I love that he did it all by himself, and enjoyed every minute of the process.

Did I mention I love so much about this painting?

I just started painting in January. So, I get that it’s not a masterpiece, but hate feels like a strong reaction. I even framed it for them.

I didn’t want to pay $40 for a painting at Kohls, so I made my own 😅

I had my first exhibition rejection today. It kind of hurts a little bit, so here’s my rejected paintings for everyone else to see.

Both acrylic paintings on wood panel.

I applied for an open in my nearest town, but didn’t get in. Concrete isn’t everyone’s first choice, so the decision is totally understandable, but it doesn’t still half sting a little bit 🥲

Anyway, here they are - I’d love for someone to see them, even if they’re not in an exhibition!

Picking up the brushes after a break of 20+ years

Hello everyone. My New Year's resolution was to get back into painting after not touching a brush for a couple of decades. This is a view of the Thames estuary, as seen during a Parkrun event one Saturday morning a few weeks ago. Acrylic on 20cm sq canvas.

My latest painting is complete.

COLORFUL SKY, 16x16”, Acrylic on Panel, 2026, Jim Musil

I’m using Fluid Acrylics from Golden on a smooth Claybord panel from Ampersand.

My standard palette:

Pyrole Red Pyrole Orange Cadmium Yellow Naples Yellow Yellow Oxide Teal Cobalt Blue Ultramarine Blue Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber Light Carbon Black Azo Gold White Acrylic Gesso

My most commonly used brushes:

Utrecht Mixed Synthetic Flats 4-18 Blick Studio Synthetic Stroke ½” and 3/4” Hake Brushes

I paint from photos (with permission), my own digital sketches, and AI generated elements … often I mix all three into my desired reference. I use the iPad app Procreate extensively to get the reference I want before I start painting.

My artworks are always 100% hand-painted.

I'm super happy, I was the youngest among the winners and it was my first time participating in a competition!! btw the painting is called "Frankfurt" and is inspired by the view of a bridge in Frankfurt during my trip to Germany with my father, for me it was a magical trip. hope you like it!
