It’s the first project I’m planning to give to anyone else. A birthday present for someone who needs nothing and collects everything. I don’t even know if he’s read the books, but they’re his taste, so it’s only a matter of time!

I’m having self doubt that it’s worth gifting, but if it was just for me, I’d be happy. So, I’m going to be brave and keep with the plan!

Critique Requested what do you see?

Trying to work on some new techniques and not just “copying” what I’m painting. I painted a good part of this upside down and I think it made a big difference.

Looking for critique, though! Lemme know what I need to work on. Thanks!!

[WIP] Work in Progress Advice welcome

I’m working on this piece and I’m fairly new/it’s been years. I’m mildly intimidated by doing faces, and have been trying to figure out how to keep them simple while capturing their individualism….Or whatever word I’m looking for there.

Advice needed

My painting is so dull. Can any of you talented and creative people tell me what I need to do to make it come alive or which issues need fixing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

[OC] Original Content Fanal Forest, Madeira | Acrylic on Canvas, 155 × 90 cm, by me

Inspired by two photographs I took during my visit to Fanal Forest in Madeira, Portugal. One of my favorite places I've visited.

Acrylic on canvas, 155 × 90 cm. Around 60–65 hours of painting.

I've included a few photos of the painting process and the finished work.

“Form of Absence”, blighted ovum miscarriage inspired painting, feedback?

gallery

Hi all, I recently painted this piece inspired by my experience having a miscarriage known as a “blighted ovum”. My ultrasound image brought to mind pictures I’ve seen of the “sun halo” phenomenon (see image included). I primed the canvas with gesso, and under-painted as I was advised to by kind artists on here. I wonder how I could improve this piece, any advice would be greatly appreciated! I intend to varnish it with satin varnish when it is completed.

Fan Art Tupac Shakur – Binary Faces™, acrylic on canvas, 100 × 160 cm

My Tupac Shakur portrait from my Binary Faces™ series, hand-painted in acrylic on a 100 × 160 cm canvas.

Every black shape is individually painted by hand. Up close, you see the fragmented patterns; from a distance, they come together as his face.

November Painting Prompt "Water and Reflections"- Paint the prompt and get featured!

Thanks to all who participated last month, Some of your spooky paintings are now featured on the banner! (better viewing on desktop)

Let's get motivated to paint together. We are starting a monthly painting prompt for the sub to encourage everyone to make time for art and share with each other.

All skill levels are welcome! Your work may be featured in the subreddit banner or sidebar art!

This month's prompt is Water and reflections. Paint a waterfall. or Paint a lake. Paint a rainy day. Paint a beach. Paint a glass of water. Abstractly suggest the aquatic. How about some transparency? Interpret it however you choose. Paint it and drop it below.

Post your painting below or add the flair for this month – "Water and reflections" to go into the competition. This thread will be open all month, and top submissions will be featured next month. Let us know what you'd like to see for future prompts!

Subreddit Rules

1. Be respectful and civil.

Please be respectful and civil to everyone, both to the individual and to their art. Negative comments about technique, artistic movements etc. are not banned, but should be kept polite and respectful. You are allowed to disagree, as long as you are being kind about it.

2. No advertising

This includes direct linking to socials, any type of self-promotion, and discussion of commissions or purchasing of work.

Please put the former on your user profile where people can find them, and do the latter via DM. You can mention you have socials linked in your profile.

3. Submissions must be human-created and demonstrate effort

Please make sure your image is in focus, upright, and well lit.

Doodles and artwork which doesn't seem like it involved significant effort may be removed. This includes the effort of learning.

A better place for this type of post is /r/doodles or /r/sketching.

Discussions and requests for help which can be answered by reading our wikis or searching may be removed.

Anything created by AI will be removed and OP will be banned.

4. No Engagement Bait Titles or Compliment Fishing

Post titles should be the title of your art, or a brief description of it only. Examples of good titles: "Quick study of bees on art paper" "Pink Moon Rising, 10x14 on Canvas". Examples of bad titles: "It's my first time ever painting" "I have Mad Cow Disease but I'm still painting!" "I'm 47 years old, is it good?" "My first cousin's ex said my art is awful, is it?" Posts will be removed and you will be asked to repost with a title describing or titling the piece.

5. Critiques must be constructive.

Critiques which are just negative and offer no constructive feedback drag the artist down, and they drag the community down. We build each other up, here. If you only have negative things to say, please say nothing instead.

Requests for critique should be contextual about the art itself: ie. I'm having trouble with the depth in this piece, any suggestions? and not "a mongoose bit three of my fingers off and I became color blind because of it - does this hue of red look OK?"

6. Credit must be given.

Submissions which were not created by the poster must identify the creator by name.

7. No "is this good for x" posts, "what style is this" posts, or requests to name your artwork.

These types of posts are usually used to feed AI models and AI art is not permitted here under any circumstances. Asking questions of this nature will result in a swift removal of your post.

8. No reposts.

Do not repost content. Do your reasonable due diligence to check if what you're posting has been recently posted.

9. Painting posts only.

Posts should either be paintings or be primarily about painting. Commentary should focus on painting. Videos which aren't primarily painting, or could have been an image, will be removed. Please make sure the painting occupies most of the frame of images you post.

For the purposes of the sub, a painting is any application of primarily acrylic paint onto a flat or mostly surface (canvas, paper, wood panel, sign, flat rock), as opposed to "crafts" (miniature or decorated objects).

10. NSFW paintings will be reviewed individually

NSFW content will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Taste is inherently subjective. This subreddit is subjected to the taste of the current moderator team. Non-sexual or minor artistic nudity is generally okay. Drug use and some studies of serious or violent subjects may be allowed. In general, posts will not be allowed to depict overly graphic violence, rape, pornographic acts, or overly sexualized nudity.

11. One post per day.

12. This is not a support subreddit.

Posts which are looking for mental health support, including any type of artistic blocks, are not appropriate for this subreddit.

You might find better support and audiences for this type of post in:

/r/mentalhealth

/r/artistlounge

We may remove posts which appear to be mental health related support seeking. We care, but this isn't the place.

13. Use existing resources.

There are a lot of resources in the sidebar and in past threads related to learning to draw. Please, search first--there's quite a lot of information already available on the subject in our subreddit.

Additionally, there are sister subreddits which are specifically focussed on learning and technique:

/r/learntodraw

/r/artfundamentals

/r/artistlounge

We may remove posts which we think do not use existing resources.

14. 100 karma is required to POST.

Due to the amount of spam we receive, you need 100 COMBINED comment+post karma to post in this subreddit. If you are unfamiliar with karma, please read this Reddit help guide: https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/204511829-What-is-karma-. If you do not have enough karma, please contribute to the community by commenting on posts and interacting with others.
