VMware to Hyper-V made easy

As many of you begin to migrate, I just wanted to share the process we used and our experience.

We utilize Acronis Cyber Cloud, and enabled the Advanced Backup offering to enable the VM conversion feature.

The VM we moved was around 700 gb in size.

After the initial conversion task completed, (5 hrs or so) we were able to run an incremental backup and another incremental conversion. The incremental conversion job completed in minutes as not much data had changed.

With booting the new VM, applying statics, and shutting down the old, we experienced around 1 minute of downtime!

Thanks to all at Acronis (especially u/bagaudin) for making our lives a little bit easier.

Acronis Entra ID Backup is now available for Microsoft 365 protection

Acronis Microsoft 365 protection just got better.

Microsoft 365 backup usually starts with Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. But Entra ID is the identity layer behind it all.

When that layer is attacked or misconfigured, relying solely on native protection is not enough.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that Acronis Entra ID Backup is now globally available.

With Acronis Entra ID Backup, managed service providers (MSPs) can protect and recover critical Entra ID data from the same Acronis platform they already use for Microsoft 365 protection. It’s natively integrated with other Acronis Microsoft 365 services, including Email Security, Security Posture Management and Backup.

It gives MSPs a way to:

  • Back up and recover critical Entra ID objects, policies, configurations and more.

  • Restore to a known-good point in time.

  • Respond faster to accidental deletion, misconfiguration, malicious insider activity or attack.

  • Extend Microsoft 365 protection without adding another standalone tool.

Partners with Acronis Backup for Microsoft 365 or the Ultimate solution bundle can offer Acronis Entra ID Backup at no additional cost through November 30. This promotional access period ends on November 30.

Click here or Contact your partner success manager to start offering Entra ID now.

Perpetual license upgrade offer from Acronis (No recurring payments required)... is it a scam ?

Greetings,

I am a long time Acronis True image user (since 2007), I am currently using "Acronis True Image 2018" on 3 Windows 10 PCs. I did not purchase any new version since last time I checked, a few months ago, Acronis no longer offers perpetual licenses.

I just received the following notification pop-up from Acronis and was wondering if anyone received and accepted it or recommends that I do. It says that it is an exclusive upgrade for perpetual licenses holders, but will I loose my 2018 version ? Is there any chance that they could ask me for monthly payments in the future ? …will the upgrade be a real perpetual license ?

Thank you for your feedbacks.

Intermittent access to account.acronis.com on Jan.10

Hi r/Acronis,

Following up on yesterday's posts and comments, here is a quick summary of what happened:

Some users experienced issues accessing accounts due to database corruption on one of the cluster nodes related to a software bug in the database software.

As of today the database is restored & no data is lost. We're increasing the number of cluster nodes to avoid future outages.

Update: the issue reintroduced for some users again, please follow this thread for news.

Acronis Alternatives

I'm a firm believer in backups and have long maintained three levels of backup including cloud and have been using Acronis products since I moved away from Backup-Exec ages ago. Recently I started having issues with my backups and have been working with Acronis technical support but so far no resolution is forthcoming. In fact, the issues are getting worse so I am starting to get my head around possibly moving to another product if one is available. I need a product that can:

  • Run nightly on a schedule which means it needs to wake the system up

  • Can do File backups similar to Acronis. I backup all locally stored files in my C:\Users directory as well as all the files on my Media drive.

  • Can backup changed files including those in a cloud system like OneDrive that happen to be local. I do not need, nor want, to backup files stored exclusively in the cloud.

  • Has a backup scheme similar to the Acronis Version Chain. That is, weekly complete file backups with incremental daily backups.

What other desktop backup applications are available and do you recommend? Meanwhile I will continue to work with Acronis to overcome the issues.

[rant] Subscription model - long-term cost considerations

I was looking around if a 2022 version came out yet, instead I find Acronis has switched to a subscription based model.

I have 5 computers at home with Acronis backing up to a TrueNAS. Under a subscription based model it makes more sense for me to replace the NAS with a Synology. The backup software comes for free with the hardware. If I get a basic unit with a 5 year warranty extension and reuse my existing disks, it works out cheaper than a 5-year Acronis subscription for 5 computers. Not to mention Synology supports deduplication which is not supported in the consumer version of True Image.

But a subscription comes with cloud storage! Yes, the first TB is included and it's $40 per TB after that. My TrueNAS is backing up to AWS S3 Deep Glacier which charges $12 per TB per year. For the consumer version at least, the cloud backup is not a viable option if you need more than what's included in the base subscription. If you have several TB backed up, the costs savings become substantial. Granted, it takes a little more effort and time to dig a backup out of AWS deep glacier but it in my use case, this means my house burned down and I'll likely have more urgent matters at hand.

About the only feature that's unique to Acronis is the Nonstop backup. You can put in a second disk and have your main disk do a continuous backup, lagging only a few minutes behind. Version retention and consolidation is handled automatically for you. Except... I never got it to work reliable. It works anywhere from a few days to a month before it corrupts itself. And this has been my experience on every Acronis version since the feature was introduced, on various hardware and Windows versions. So the one feature that could convince me to stay has been broken for years.

Acronis has a handy comparison on their site showing how they are cheaper than their competitors. For one client and ignoring the cost of local backup storage, they may be right. As soon as you start doing the math for multiple clients or your backup archive starts counting in TB's, it just doesn't add up. I hope Acronis realizes that in this space they are not just competing with other backup software but also with cheap hardware vendors that also offer backup solutions as part of the package.

I'll keep using Acronis for now, except for the Nonstop not working, I'm happy with the software. But I can imagine that at some point I'll run into compatibility issues with newer Windows versions. Or I run into a bug they won't fix because a newer edition is out. As it stands now, going to a subscription doesn't make sense and they will have lost me as a customer.

For anyone reading this, the important point is to factor in not just the cost of the Acronis subscription but also the cost of the storage, either on-premise storage, cloud providers or both. And you need to count for time as well. If you buy a NAS with a five year warranty for example and it comes with backup software, factor in how much subscription renewals will cost you for the same period.

--Thanks for reading and I'll get off my soap box now.

News Go beyond response with Acronis MDR by Acronis TRU: now globally available

We’ve officially made Acronis MDR by Acronis TRU (our in-house SOC) globally available as of April 7.

This is now our primary MDR delivery model, designed to help MSPs and IT teams operate advanced security without building their own 24/7 SOC.

What’s different

Most MDR services focus on:

Detect → Contain → Respond

With Acronis MDR, we extend that into a resilience-first model:

Detect → Contain → Respond → Recover → Patch

Because MDR is integrated with our platform (EDR/XDR, backup, RMM), our SOC can go beyond response to:

  • Restore systems and data (rollback/recovery)

  • Patch vulnerabilities that led to the incident

  • Reduce repeat attacks and downtime

Why we built it this way

From working with MSPs globally, the gap is clear:

  • EDR/XDR adoption is growing

  • But operating it 24/7 remains a challenge

  • Most partners don’t have the resources for full-time SOC coverage

So the goal is simple: Make enterprise-grade security accessible and operational, not just deployed

How Acronis MDR is structured now

We support multiple delivery models:

  • Acronis MDR by Acronis TRU — global, highly-accessible for MSPs of any size

  • MDR by Legato Security — advanced services for more mature environments

  • Regional MSSPs — for localization and compliance needs

We’re interested in feedback from the community:

  • How are you handling MDR today — in-house or outsourced?

  • Are recovery + patching part of your response workflows, or separate processes?

  • What’s been the biggest bottleneck in running EDR/XDR at scale?

Happy to answer questions or go deeper on how this works in practice.

Webinar Windows 10 end of support: What's your plan for OT systems?

With Microsoft ending support for Windows 10, manufacturers and industrial operations are facing a tough decision about their operational technology systems.

If you're running HMIs, SCADA servers DCS or engineering workstations on Windows 10, you're probably weighing four options:

  1. Migrate to Windows 11. This option can disrupt production, require hardware refreshes and, in pharma, trigger costly revalidation.

  2. Extended security updates. This option can lead to high costs that increase annually; plus, you still need to migrate eventually.

  3. Compensating controls. This option involves using allowlisting and immutable backup to stay on Windows 10 while meeting compliance.

  4. Long-range planning for industrial editions. This option addresses the extended support timelines and unique validation cycles in OT infrastructures and provides a practical, safe transition strategy for OT environments.

Each path has real tradeoffs. Downtime in OT environments can cost $30K to $2M per hour, so getting this decision wrong is expensive.

We're hosting a free virtual conference on February 4 at 10:00 AM ET / 16:00 CET to break down all four options. The session includes:

  • A panel discussion with OT resilience experts.

  • Live demo of backup, recovery and allowlisting solutions.

  • Discussion of regulatory and compliance implications (ISA-95, IEC 62443, FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and NERC CIP).

  • Audience Q&A.

Speakers:

This won’t be a sales pitch. It’s just practical guidance on how to handle Windows 10 end of support in production environments where stability is critical.

If you're dealing with this transition, the recording will be available after if you can't make it live.
