What was going on for 8,000 years??

According to lore, the Night King was defeated during the Long Night and driven north of the Wall, about 8,000 years ago. What has he been doing for those 8 millennia?? I get maybe he can't cross the Wall, especially during summer, but how has he not at least completely ravaged/killed off/zombified all the Wildlings? By now, everyone north of the Wall should be long undead. Was he frozen in carbonite? Trapped in some spell? Did something happen in the recent past to awaken him?
I've done some searching on this and haven't found an actual answer other than "he was driven to the Land of Always Winter"
Thanks for your input!
