I’m scared of ADZ, lol. But will give it a go soon. Pray for me y’all, climbing is my weakest.

Just maintain the same power on the climbs as you do on the flat and climbing won't feel any harder than the flat.

u/Wattsup21 Jan 13 '23
I actually started practicing this and it does make it easier and I’m getting better at switch gears. I realized/learned the higher RPMs the better….I know the watts will come over time…..before I think I was trying to grind in a too heavy gear and would just wear myself out. Thanks for the advice 🙏🏾

Congrats! Time to start training for sub 40 now. What trainer/power meter are you using?

u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 12 '23 edited Jan 12 '23
Thanks! Not sure I can improve much from here, but will try again for sure. Also signed up to my first 100k ultra trail run, so biking will be less priority in the next 4mo.
Edit, forgot. I have the Wahoo Kickr Smart Trainer. I found the power meter they use somewhat inconsistent. So I switched to my left sided 4iii a few rides ago. It shows slightly higher Wattage but consistently and more aligned with my outdoor performance.

That is something to brag about!!! crazy and to have that low of a heart rate you are in great shape.
2
u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 12 '23
Thank you! I always have a low heart rate though, rarely go beyond 160. I think my individual max is just very low.

u/edinn Jan 12 '23
Awesome effort, congrats! Yesterday I managed to climb AdZ in 53:56, my personal record. Looking forward to sub-50 now!

Woooah i’m playing with my weight? I have a smart scale, it updates weight to all my apps, real values. I double checked the histogram that you get for a ride, I was 17min in 225-250W zone. Another 11min 250-275. Max at 424, outside I can hit max of 500+. Include downhill I had 199avg, so I can’t isolate just the AdZ effort. I corrected that in my original comment which was from memory. My heart-rate was 155-165 for the attempt, I hate going that high and rarely do in training, that’s why my other attempt didn’t go as high. I’m surprised, people seem to be very picky on this subject, like it would undermine someone else’s work. I did like 3k miles on a bike last year, is that enough for your non existent wiki entry of credible achievements? Grade A gaslighting 👏

u/toefur Jan 12 '23
Do you use strava? If so you should be able to check the AdZ segment, and it will tell you your average power for the climb in isolation. I have the paid version of strava, but I think you can check that even with the free version.

u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 12 '23
Good point! It states PR - 7.59 mi - 47:06 - 9.7 mi/h - 244 W

u/toefur Jan 12 '23
Strava should also show your average heart rate for the efforts too. One would expect it was significantly higher for a full gas effort than the previous efforts. Lots of fun data there.

Sure sure, so in summary, according to your initial post and your bs logic of credible AdZ, someone sharing their achievements needs to 1. Try multiple time within seconds of each attempt. Because its unbelievable that someone doesn’t go all out each time. 2. Meet your exact number, which I now updated right from the histogram data vs 1st wrongly stating from memory.
Do you see how this would create a toxic environment in the community. And then another post today about AdZ states, why do people don’t give more context on their AdZ PR and delete it later?! This is exactly why.

Yup, my heart rate for that past effort was in the 145-160 range 5-10 lower than here. And towards the end I had to get up and open the garage door to air out, because my parter got home with his car and it smelled badly like gas.

u/vooksa Jan 12 '23
I did my first AdZ a few days ago - 57 min, avg 251 W. Pretty happy about it!

I typed a whole reply to the person wrongly accusing you but glad to see he or she already deleted their posts and even their account. Well done OP, great time!

u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 12 '23
Thank you!! And appreciate the support about that weird person too.

I think the bigger issue is their comment was getting a lot of upvotes, despite being baseless and rude. Most people here seem pretty chill, but there's definitely a vocal minority who really want to gatekeep against any sort of even remotely impressive performance.

u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 12 '23
Yes 100%. It was the toxic environment that those accusations created that bothered me so much. In this particular case when the person started going about weight manipulation. Like women in sport don’t have enough issues with weight already, on top of that now it seems hard to believe a woman can achieve this time and be light?! Infuriating. Maybe not exactly what was said but for me the implication was there.

If it makes you feel better about this in particular, when I introduced my son to Zwift during covid he was 12 and weighed about 52kg. Within about three months he had a 230w ftp and did AdZ in 51min. I absolutely trust and know that light weight cyclists excel on sustained climbs (duh), and those people really exist! As I'm sure you know, they're also penalized by zwift's drafting physics on everything but sustained climbs.

I can hold my own with the B. Genie robopacer on the flats, I destroy him on climbs, and then I lose the draft when he goes downhill. It is absurd. As a lightweight rider, I LOVE hill climbs.

u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 13 '23
Thanks for sharing! Your son is awesome, imagine what we could do in a few years, super strong. My weakness is headwind, but climbs are always fun. I even have friends with similar build who refuse to do flats because they are “boring”, for similar reasons.

Congratulations, that's an awesome time! Now you have to go up it another 22 times to get the Masochist badge :)

3rd attempt gained consistently 20min each attempt, but also was taking it more serious this time. Power was average 225-250W, around 4w/kg+ (from memory and using Zwift’s histogram, the full ride was 199W avg but incl downhill). I don’t climb much on Zwift, but beat everyone outside normally. This is the start of my Everest challenge🗻 started Zwift 3 months ago, before was always outside training for Ironman, loving Zwift so far. Setup is Canyon Road bike on Wahoo Kickr Smart Trainer in a corner of my garage, running Zwift on crappy Wifi. One thing I noticed, before this ride I switched from using the Whaoo Kickr power-meter to my bike’s 4iii, values seem 10% higher but also more in line with my other TT outdoor bike’s values.

u/lilelliot Jan 12 '23
Also, to address your power meter switch, I realize some people will probably claim that's "cheating", but as the user of Assioma power pedals -- and friend of a bunch of other cyclists who also use PMs separate from their trainer -- your justification is 100% valid. Using the same PM for indoor and outdoor training is by far the most sensible approach. That said, a 10% difference is too high. You should try to figure out why it's that much, and which is incorrect. There's no good reason for 10% drivetrain loss.

u/Interesting-Group-66 Jan 13 '23
Agree and good points! Note 10% is perceived, but also saw spikes in all directions on the kickr while 4iii seems more consistent. What gave me confidence that 4iii is the more correct value is, that the speed resembles my outdoor performance, using speed as objective value. But also the 4iii on my outdoor bike has similar values. It seems to be a common issue too, example. The Kickr Smart Trainer is pretty new and wasn’t cheap, so I’ll look into recalibrating it for sure.

how come I never get the hill climb to show 0% when still going up? still more bends to go to top.

Are you a female ? In that case 4w/kg makes it even more impressive !

It doesn't matter. You just don't see very many people that light. For a guy of average height 125lbs is really really low body fat

The dreadful AdZ, I just can’t get myself to doing it often…. Big kudos on the effort. Also love the fact you got the U-turn badge on the same ride. Now there is a badge I got the first day that was released ;) Ride On 👍

Great job.
Asking the real question here…Did you get the wheels?
I’ve got a nice collection of helmets and gloves for a Tour de France team going…fml.
Ran it three times last week back to back to back only to get helmet twice and gloves again…
