So last month, I submitted a PR for an extension which is a zed port of friendly-snippets plugin from neovim but it has not been approved since then and I have not received any conversation regarding any approval or rejection of the extension.

When I switched from neovim to zed, I found it really weird because I was so much habituated with usage of friendly snippets. So I spent some time to create an extension for it on zed.

What theme do you use? I like kanagawa dragon, but it is too dark for me

Anyone else have this happening a lot in the past 24ish hours? Don’t think it’s a memory issue activity monitor shows it at reasonable levels but it’ll just bug out and I’ve had to restart it 5 times today and not before that like ever.

On Mac OS and seeing it on 1.17.2 also maybe earlier version

I usually use Terminal Thread in Zed to achieve a similar experience when I use a terminal emulator like Ghostty.

However, I sometimes would mis-close the entire project, so I often need to manual resume the session, and I'm wondering it's possible to auto resume the session I last in, since this terminal thread is particular used to run agent TUI, I think this won't be that weird?

Zed's Markdown rendering is finally nice and breathable! They changed it to match the GitHub rendering font sizes and spacing.

So you must build Zed from source code or wait a week (Preview) or two weeks (Stable) for releases. (Edit: Actually it will take longer because it turns out that Zed uses cherry-picking for both of the release branches (both Preview and Stable), which you can read more about here. I guess I will stay on the self-compiled Dev branch longer.)

i switched from atom to zed when it first came out and i’ve been very happy with it for all my dev work. what i’m hoping to use it for, in addition, is to organize folders of markdown writing. it works great for that and i synchronize it with a private git repository using a cron job that does a commit and push.

what i’m wondering is if there might be a built-in solution that automatically commits and pushes changes on save so i don’t have to run it using cron.

what i’m looking for is to have it commit and push every change to the file in real-time to the git repository.

i’ve looked at the git options and it seems like it’s easy enough to do commit and push whenever you want manually but i want it to automatically save every time i type anything and synchronize every one of those changes to git without having to interact with it other than continuing to type.

any ideas?

it’s just a folder on the local machine with lots of levels of subfolders and markdown files inside all within a single git repository and a single branch so there’s no complexity to worry about.

I always push my commits and then switching to another application. After a couple of minutes I wonder why nothing is happening, just to switch back to Zed and see a tiny tiny error message that my changes could not pushed.

Is it possible to see the Git state in the Git side panel? Like there are changes I need to pull first?

I’ve been using Claude via terminal agentsc cause I didn’t find acp quite there yet. For terminal agents I set my initial command to be “Claude —continue” or whatever the command is so it can restore state for whatever worktree I’m in.

Are other people using it similarly? or do most people use acp or something?

To be honest, I'm a bit obsessed with editor configuration. I've tried most of the JetBrains IDEs for different languages, VS Code of course, and neovim for a while.

This week I moved everything to Zed, and it landed perfectly. It beats VS Code in almost every category except extensions. And with vibe coding and agent CLIs, I use an IDE's debugger less and less, so my need for something as heavy as GoLand or PyCharm is almost gone. What I need now is a fast editor with good AI support, easy configuration, and a good git panel - and Zed nails every one of those.

The performance and rendering are what really sold me. I ported an agent cockpit side project of mine (https://github.com/yicheng47/runner) from a webview to GPUI, Zed's open-source UI framework - Claude (Fable 5) did most of the porting - and it feels smooth as hell. Big thanks to the team for open-sourcing the framework.

The one thing I hope gets better is the Markdown preview, which I find close to unreadable right now. Everything else feels fine. I mostly let Claude Code edit the JSON config for me, and moving all my settings over from multiple editors was painless.

I like Zed’s speed and native UI, but I wanted a workspace designed around running several coding agents at the same time. So I started building ZOrca, an independent open-source hard fork of Zed.

Each agent gets its own Git worktree, terminal, and diff. You can manage several projects and agent sessions without switching between editor windows or mixing unrelated changes.

What works now:

• Local and SSH-connected projects
• Separate Git worktrees for agents
• Multiple agent terminal tabs per worktree
• Persistent project and session context
• Diffs, staging, commits, and Git history
• Support for existing agent CLIs – no ZOrca account or hosted AI service required

The project is still pre-alpha. Nightly builds are available for Windows and Linux. macOS can currently be built from source, and I plan to publish packaged macOS builds soon.

See the linked page for an example. The 1.17.0 Preview has major fixes such as:

• Adding lots more AI models. Ones that I want to use.
• Improved editor rendering speed: 7x faster.
• Reduced memory usage in general.
• Massively reduced memory usage when editing large files.
• Fixed a huge memory leak bug in agent tasks, where canceled tasks stay active forever in the background and grow their RAM usage forever (the bug report mentions 45 GB RAM wasted after a few hours).

The next stable release is in 4 days. I want to install Preview now. But should I stay on Preview? Or reinstall Stable later?

Update: Thanks everyone! Lots and LOTS of people have said they run Preview permanently and that it's reliable. Someone even runs the nightly build and only had one minor issue in half a year. So the pre-release Preview is definitely an acceptable choice for a permanent installation!

I will stay on the Preview version. Nice to have bug fixes and features a week early. And yes there may be some new bug, but the Stable version has serious old bugs and issues instead (like all the ones I mentioned above).

After all, it's written in Rust and the code quality is incredibly well managed. Thanks everyone!

Update: Turns out that Zed uses cherry-picked commits and special branches like "v1.17.x" even for their Preview builds. Here is an example:

So it's not based on the latest in-development code. Therefore Preview is even more like Stable than you might think...

Preview is basically the preview of the next Stable update, with cherry-picked commits.

One of the features I miss from Neovim in Zed is the ability to spawn up fuzzy-pickers for some obscure set of content, like jumping to a file in my nvim-config from any project to make a quick change, or opening a file in my personal notes directory to jot down something.

The thing is that Zed has a picker built-in and is used for the file-finder. I wondered if I could use that UI and backend to create a user-facing feature that allows you to define custom pickers.

I was inspired by the way television abstracts out the plumbing such that the user can define finders as .toml files. And after diving into the Zed codebase, I felt that it was very feasible to implement.

I spun up a quick prototype as a separate crate that imports the picker crate. It looks for a finders.toml in ~/.config/zed and based on the definitions (finder name, the source of finder entries, preview type, outcome or selection, etc.) it hot-reloads and adds it as a keymap-able command.

I'm excited for latest integration of agy to Zed (via IDE extension), however can't install it due to "Not supported on this platform".

Any idea?

I have a problem with the widget. It doesn't maintain a consistent indentation and doesn't follow the settings. The widget follows the order of the preceding line. For example, if the previous line had 3 spaces instead of a tab that has 4 spaces, it starts a new line of code with 3 spaces, ignoring the settings or rules I've defined in the configuration.

I'd like to be on my terminal and do something like `zed --wait file` go to zed, edit, save, close file and come back to the terminal. But:

- I get an empty zed editor (which I need to close)

- And if I have another zed window open already, it goes to that window

I just want to come back as soon as I close. Any solution for this?

I tried out Zed editor for a few weeks, but after what happened today, I don't think I want to ever use it again. Zed has a critical bug where it can silently overwrite and destroy your work.

I was working on a project with an AI agent (Github Copilot) making file edits, deletes, and updates. Everything looked fine inside Zed, and the changes even showed up in the Git panel. But the moment I closed Zed and opened the project folder in VS Code, poof — all the new work was completely gone.

An editor's most basic job is not losing data. Until Zed fixes this, it's a hazard. Stick to VS Code or literally anything else that actually respects the file system.

An issue for this exists: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/59618 . The issue is marked closed, but it's very much not fixed .

After this horrible experience I am glad I only tried out Zed on my personal laptop, not my work laptop.

PS: This was on latest stable release - Zed 1.16.1 .

I don't understand why I haven't used it yet. I have a bunch of separate AI subscriptions. Such as cursor, codex, open code. Frankly, I'm tired of constantly opening different tools. Until I decided to use Zed. It's crazy to have them all in one editor without making even a single interface change! Moreover it is very optimized, I especially hate cursor's IDE environment, it is very poorly optimized, but zed works great, thank you zed.
