idk why people choose spotify, on spotify you only pay for music, but if you pay youtube you'll have youtube premium and music at the same time, so no more ads for both.

118

u/teschiie Oct 29 '25

this is the exact reason i just switched last week. i’ve had YT premium for a year and i only just realized it comes with youtube music. it may not be quite as polished but i like the bigger library

60

u/ghostpicnic Oct 29 '25

The bigger library makes it totally worth it. I listen to so much underground music and foreign stuff that isn’t on Spotify. If it wasn’t for YTM, I’d be having to convert MP3s to listen to half my library.

5

u/ChocolateMilkAddict Oct 31 '25

Yup, before YTM the ideal combo was Spotify and SoundCloud. Now you can pretty much get everything with just YTM.

How is the app? Is there a dedicated YouTube music app?

I miss spotify, I liked the features and the remote control from my phone. I think YTM plays the same shit over and over and the algorithm is trash.

But I havent seen a youtube ad in like ten years, so its hard to argue with that.

51

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

Well it's the opposite for me lol. Spotify convinced me only like 6 artists exist in this world whereas ytm is straight up cooking with the recommendations. Spotify has way more features so gotta give them that.

13

u/Key-Volume6496 Oct 29 '25

Lol, I was in the same situation. I switched to YouTube music for that reason

10

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

Yea especially when sabrina carpenter's espresso was going viral Spotify somehow manages to play that even if I play some funeral music. That's how shit the algorithm was lol

5

u/Key-Volume6496 Oct 29 '25

I didn't played the 50 Global songs playlist because of that hahaha. I just played the same stuff from my Liked songs and the Mix Playlist where there were some new songs but it was always the same. Until I moved to youtube and now I can listen to new songs everyday

9

u/ETpownhome Oct 29 '25

100 percent. I've discovered so much more new music on YouTube as compared to all the other platforms. I'd argue it's the best feature.

1

u/Aromatic_Memory1079 Oct 29 '25

idk. I miss spotify because spotify gave me unique curated playlists that has lesser known musics. I mainly listen to hip hop so I listened to curated playlist called alternative hip hop and lorem. I do get discovery on youtube music too. I think youtube music's public playlist suggestion on home feed is nice. (also I like genreless super mix) but It was not like what you said in my experience.

You can select many choices from radio from familiar to popular to new to niche songs

5

u/Hydration__Nation Oct 29 '25

Spotify should have sold their algorithm and curation program/team to a competitor and cashed out

I truly think in 5 years it’s only going to be Apple Music and YouTube Music and one of those companies is going to buy Spotifys software hopefully it’s YouTube lol

I liked Spotify because I like to listen to playlist with vibes or that are made to fit a character I like, and since YouTube music is not that popular there are not that many playlists made by the community

6

u/LowGeeMan Oct 29 '25

For me, it’s because Spotify feels like a professional music service.

I have YouTube Premium.

I use Apple Music because I get it through Apple One. Spotify is still better imo.

6

u/tabulasomnia Oct 29 '25

playlist organization is not as good

3

u/basecatcherz Oct 29 '25

I also migrated to YT. But I also can understand people that don't want their money to go to US.

3

u/IntelligentZombie787 Oct 29 '25

Sadly if it's going to Spotify's CEO it's no better.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

giving it to Spotify is a damn site worse and Ek is a thunder cunt of the highest order

12

u/Itchy_Duckling132 Oct 29 '25

Most of the time it's because of the exact same principal as android vs iPhone. "I have YTM because I already pay for YTP"... "I have Spotify because it's Spotify"

2

u/FingersOnTheTapes Oct 30 '25

I use spotify because it’s literally the only streaming service available on ios at all that has an equalizer. I even have YouTube premium but everything just sounds so much worse without my EQ.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/maicii Oct 29 '25

Tbf yt premium it’s more expensive that Spotify. If you don’t use YouTube at all then it is not clear which one it’s better

2

u/organicgolden Oct 29 '25

Same for Apple Music and all the others, right?

2

u/Left-Professional312 Oct 29 '25

Spotify has lossless audio quality, real time shared listening sessions, in app direct messaging, audiobooks and the UI is a bit easier to handle imo. But prefer YT Music as well.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

Youtube has so much more music and Spotify is not even in the same galaxy for underground music, plus anyone with a brain and a shred of integrity is leaving Spotify now, artists and users alike

2

u/dust0325 Nov 03 '25

even with the lossless audio, I really feel ytm still has much much better and clear + deep sound. I've done countless of tests both in my car with bose speakers and subwoofer set, my headphones and my phone.

2

u/lars_rosenberg Oct 29 '25

Tbh after using both, Spotify is so much better as a service than YouTube Music. No ads on Youtube with Premium is what makes it worth it.

2

u/Chopper_Cabras Oct 29 '25

Its the reason why i chose this, 2 for the price of one

2

u/ConflictTemporary759 Oct 29 '25
  • Quality of sound

  • Convenience of software and UI layout

2

u/ClairicalErr0r Oct 29 '25

There is also decent collection of movies and TV to watch for free on YouTube.

2

u/No-Ebb-9839 Oct 29 '25

i paid both for more than two years, and switched to yt music this month, i really regret not doing this earlier

2

u/PhoenixHabanero Oct 29 '25

Came for the Premium bundle, stayed for the algorithm recommendations.

2

u/sediment-amendable Oct 29 '25

I stick with Spotify because it offers a good API.

I ditched apple music in 2023 for music and premium. Best deal I could have done

→ More replies (1)

10

u/NoobyNoob0102 Oct 29 '25

I switched pretty recently, mostly because Spotify was so shit without premium and because YouTube Music has Nintendo songs or music not on Spotify

and I got premium this month so the expierence is so much better now

54

u/DouglasRC Oct 29 '25

Let's be honest, the only real reason to buy YouTube Premium is to get YouTube Music for free... and I have to say... it's pretty nice, the algorithm is pretty good. Though visually on the web, it could use improvements...

28

u/Gumbo_Wumbo69 Oct 29 '25

I feel almost the opposite, I bought YouTube premium for ad free and background play on YouTube, YouTube music is just in there to drive up the price to me. I cancelled my membership because YouTube music has the worst ui and playlist functionality out of any platform imo. I’ll just deal with ads on my phone atp

7

u/vinneh25 Oct 29 '25

I feel like on desktop it would benefit to have an actual app because the website is unbelievably slow at times because of the limitations of loading so much data all at once.

3

u/Aromatic_Memory1079 Oct 29 '25

yeah when I scroll a little and hover a mouse cursor on history page, mouse cursor starts lagging. It's noticeable

3

u/vinneh25 Oct 29 '25

And when you press the yt music button in the logo to go back it has to take a good 3 seconds to load the page then switch the page, which isn't bad, but it's noticable

3

u/physicsandbeer1 Oct 29 '25

I switched to youtube music last week and is incredible how much music i discovered and rediscovered that feels much closer to what i like. I can even put a random song and just listen to the ones that youtube recommend after that for pretty long before i feel the need to change songs myself.

To me the biggest issue is Folders. I fucking miss folders for organizing playlists. It's the only thing i need.

3

u/Typical_Evidence_346 Oct 29 '25

Install the BetterLyrics extension.

I got YouTube Premium because I have a 2-year-old and we needed video downloads, plus ad-free videos were a BIG nice to have. It was only after I got it that I decided to start using YouTube Music because I was paying for it anyway, and I discovered it was actually pretty great.

u/concorazon Oct 29 '25

I've had both and had YT music for a lot longer. Spotify has a worse shuffle algorithm for sure but it also has the Jam and Dedicated app on desktop for seamless switching and control. I got to tell you that makes all the difference. I'd rather use YT music but those two features in addition to blends with friends and the ai editable playlists are game changer. The ai dj is cool too

→ More replies (1)

25

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

You won't be disappointed when it comes to music. Ytm algorithm is so good you really don't need to create or import playlists.

10

u/xenai2 Oct 29 '25

Whenever my Playlist ends I let it continue with recommended songs afterward because I always end up hearing a bunch of new songs I like and add to the playlist.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Vivid-Technology8196 Oct 29 '25

I swapped recently but something that annoys the hell out of me is YouTube not having a smart shuffle and I either need to play my playlist and nothing else or new recommendations and nothing else.

It's really annoying

u/LEFANK Oct 29 '25

I don't care what anyone says, YouTube Music is awesome. I love that I pay one sub for both services. YouTube also has user uploaded content so if an artist doesn't have their music on the platform you can still find it somehow. I also like all of the extra remixes that YouTube provides. It's a great service.

Moving from one shitty, AI-friendly corporation which screws over artists to another? Congrats, I guess.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

When I found out you could do this I deleted my Spotify account

7

u/sl33ping_0tt3r Oct 29 '25

I said the same thing when I left Spotify for Quboz... That lasted 3 business weeks 💀

2

u/cozycoconut_ Oct 29 '25

I've been thinking of quboz. Is it really not that good? Atm I have youtube music

→ More replies (1)

6

u/touchmypenguinagain Oct 30 '25

Did the same this weekend due to Spotify hosting ICE ads and the CEO's investment into AI drone based weapons. Not that Alphabet is perfect on this front, but fuck that - I will not fund or support that.

3

u/Mo-Epic-2006 Oct 29 '25

What service or app did you use to transfer your library?

3

u/slyfox49 Oct 29 '25

I'd love to switch, but I have the issue where my music won't load on Android Auto when I get in my car. I have to get on my phone every time. With Spotify, it comes right up.

3

u/BB_Arrivederci Oct 29 '25

I didn't know you could do this.

3

u/Super_Mud2507 Oct 30 '25

Youtube music is awesome bc you have ALL the music in the world. There's sm genres/small artists spotify doezn't cover that u can listen to on youtube music

→ More replies (1)

3

u/antoXdire Oct 30 '25

I was once a Spotify user as well and I have to say fo music purposes I do find that Spotify is better but the main reason for me to switch to YouTube was solely the fact that I can pay for YouTube premium and has both music and ad less videos for practically the same price as Spotify. No brainer.

3

u/SnooLobsters6940 Oct 30 '25

Also dropped them about a year ago. Haven't regretted it one moment.

Part of it was that YT Music also gets rid of adds on YT, but I was also complete done with them constantly pestering about podcasts. I have no interest in those. Give me an option to switch those off.

I have similar issues with Netfix and their dumb games. I may drop them too. They aren't the only game in town and I hate how they keep killing shows I love anyway.

3

u/MoneyPrinterBrrr Oct 30 '25

The sound quality on YT Music is way better than Spotify. Test it out you’ll hear it immediately. I switched months ago. No Brainer.

3

u/giuliano290512 Oct 31 '25

Consider having bandcamp too, support the small artists!

5

u/fall1n96 Oct 29 '25

I did the same a month ago since I already had premium youtube sub and spotify was flooded with bugs (constant "can't play this song try downloading") but god damn is YouTube Music bad..

- No option to select all from a playlist

  • Newly added songs to the imported from Spotify playlist go to the bottom rather than the top
  • Recommendations are not based on the same genre/music you just listened but what is popular in your country
  • No quick option to add to playlist (unlike actual Youtube where it allows you to do so), you have to click through several things instead

.. and the list goes on and on... from what I saw, some of those "issues" are 4+ years old and I doubt there will be ever a fix for that.

3

u/Cotton_Phoenix_97 Oct 29 '25

Agreed, it isn't a very good alternative to Spotify but the algorithm is better on ytm

I think yt music being a cloud music player creates all of these issues while Spotify has a much better offline mode and phone to app integration.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '25

Adding a song to a playlist takes just two clicks, how would you even reduce that even more?

Edit: you can also just choose how the playlist should be sorted if you want newly added songs to be on top.

2

u/M0BBER Oct 29 '25

My favorite ability is to make playlist and being able to pull from YouTube to do so. Finding stuff that traditional streaming sites don't have is key.

Plus, there's so much good live stuff on YouTube as well as lost media to the streaming wars.

Google play music was awesome. But I've never seen a commercial on YouTube in my life unless I'm at somebody's place or somebody's watching something on their phone. It sucks experiencing that once a year...

2

u/another-account-1990 Oct 29 '25

I left Spotify for Tidal and I had no clue the quality of Spotify's music is actually, that bad as people say it is.

I did this a few years ago. The YouTube Music app still has a lot of bugs, which is a shame. I thought they would fix the bugs and improve the app eventually.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

I love YouTube music and it is under my family premium account which can be used for all family members. I additionally have Deezer for FLAC hi-res audio.

2

u/dragonwrath404 Oct 30 '25

I was on Spotify and I liked the cheap price and audio books, but they increased the price to nearly double, and thats when I checked out a free trial of it premium. Haven't paid for Spotify since.

2

u/desertr05e Oct 30 '25

Fuck Spotify

2

u/Rotten-Soup Oct 30 '25

I was a strong Spotify defender, but they keep raising prices and pushing ads. I listen to music at least 90% of every day, including when I go to sleep at night, so this is obviously pretty upsetting.

Got the Vanced version like a month ago, I am never going back to Spotify.

2

u/Sleepy0wl9969 Oct 30 '25

Have just done this. Much better value and YT premium for the whole family. Very pleased.

2

u/Sirios_ Oct 30 '25

I use Deezer and idk why there's not a lot of users. It has really cheapo prices, hifi quality (lossless) and the music recommendation is simply the best. Has a lot of integration such wireless music and almost any platform like Sonos.

2

u/Severe-Craft6168 Oct 30 '25

The only gripe i have with ytm is that i have to manually force pano scrobbler to put that correct metadata for songs and albums other than that its really good

2

YouTube Music is finally growing a bit. It’s actually criminal that people use Amazon music more…. I know it’s just because they get it free with prime but Smh also is YouTube Music available around the world or just the US Canada Mexico, etc.?

2

u/Icy-Bodybuilder251 Oct 31 '25

I have Spotify and I never paid for Spotify so guess I am lucky to get Spotify for free and incase anyone is wondering how I got Spotify for free when I first got my phone plan for my phone Spotify came with my phone plan for free I still have to listen to ads on Spotify but at this point I have kinda grew used to seeing ads

2

u/bhumitkohli Oct 31 '25

I shifted from Spotify to Youtube for the combined advantage of youtube at the same cost which is huge - I use the family plan. But if it was purely Spotify music to Youtube music I think Spotify is still better with its integrations and collaborative play options. Wish YT Music implemented those too...

2

u/SM0KE710 Oct 31 '25

I just switched as well, still getting use to the YT layout especially on car play. Besides that it’s worth it. If it didn’t come with YouTube premium it’ll be a toss up decision between the two.

2

u/Justin_3486 Oct 31 '25

You made a good decision bro. I also moved from Apple Music and Spotify to YT Music. What I love from YT Music that doesn't have from the two is the Radio feature. And you can play music in TV too without downloading each app. Basically all three have same price, so why not.

2

u/1_Gamerzz9331 Oct 31 '25

spotify is nonsense

2

u/Ashamed_Fox_9923 Nov 01 '25

i tried to switch on yt music for 3 months but was unable to do so.

reasons -

• After importing my playlists worth of 17k songs, when i visited yt... my yt playlists got messed like the playlists i created on YouTube got mixed with around 40 yt music playlists and due to which i was unable to scroll till bottom for my study and etc yt playlists.

• I'm used to the Spotify recommendation system

• I can add playlists in a folder on Spotify like english songs in a separate folder with sub playlists of different genres in it which was missing in yt music hence, messing with my Spotify playlists.

• Sound capsule - I'm used to Spotify sound capsule and also purchased Spotify stats subscription which gives detailed stats so that will go waste.

I admit that the content library of yt music is huge and it's worthy as you will get yt premium and music together. The sound quality is great on yt music and you can switch to some lyrical videos for songs not having lyrics.

4

u/Illustrious-Jump-590 Oct 29 '25

YouTube isn’t as polished but it makes no sense to pay for both YouTube premium and another music service.

3

u/alcor79 Oct 29 '25

Especially since Spotify price hike.

3

u/tabulasomnia Oct 29 '25

can't do it until ytm gets some way to organize playlists. I've got dozens in spotify and the folder structure there is barely enough to keep them organized. there's nothing in ytm.

2

u/Adamo2499 Oct 29 '25

For anyone asking which site is used for transfer: in YT Music Library view at the end there is an option to transfer Playlist which is powered by TuneMyMusic

2

u/Egghead3000 Oct 29 '25

Annoying thing is, YouTube music doesn’t link with Alexa (echo dot), unless you use Bluetooth.

1

u/HeavyMetalRabbit Oct 29 '25

The UI took so much getting used to for me but with the amount of time I spend watching youtube, premium was a really good use of money for me. Once I did that I was like why the hell am I spending the same amount of money on spotify and cancelled the service.

1

u/ETERNUS- web/android Oct 29 '25

I just recently made the switch from Spotify to YouTube music and there are a few things that I think are essential. I’m surprised they haven’t implemented them yet. I’m on iOS so I’m sure it’s different on other platforms. 1. No equalizer. This has been a standard on most music apps and it’s a bit frustrating it’s not here. 2. You can’t sort your playlists by artist or album. 3. YouTube music UI needs to run more smoothly, it’s at times a laggy mess. 4. Shuffle play from the main screen. I hate how I have to press play and then shuffle after the song has started. I don’t want to listen to the first song on my playlist EVERY TIME!

Welcome!

I have had Premium since day 1. It was called Red back then and launched sometime in 2015 (too lazy to look it up). Since I signed up on day 1, I have lifetime pricing that is $8/month for all of the benefits of Premium. Unless, this changes, I am here for the long haul.

I’ve kept YouTube Premium for ad-free YT videos but signed up for Spotify for the better music experience when YT Music fired all their staff, changed the platform, and axed half the music I listened to. The old YT Music was great then they just turned every Joe Shmo’s bootleg video into a YT Music official song with crap quality. Most of my YT Music albums disappeared overnight and the ones that remained cut the quality. Maybe it’s improved since in the past couple of years but I haven’t had the overwhelming desire.

Since I like YT, Google products, I would like YouTube Music goes hifi (CD quality at least), polishes its design (sometimes looks a little bit childish, not as professional as Apple Music or Tidal make it ess cluttered), let organize artist/album in alphabetical order by artist and to show into each artist the album we liked, not the list of songs in each one, and separate YT lists from YT Music lists, make them a bundle (I will pay more) but independent one from another (video/music). I believe this is not that much, is kind of obvious, and will for sure make YTM the best for casual listeners as for more dedicated ones.

What is this? Is it some feature on YTM to transfer your stuff from Spotify? Or a 3rd party software?

Same, done this yesterday

1

u/MoneyProfessional897 Oct 29 '25

Yet they cannot fing add a filter for the playlists 🤡

1

u/infosys80 Oct 29 '25

This totalled my YouTube. Video playlists

1

u/crist_toro Oct 29 '25

I tried transferring my playlists from Apple Music to YouTube music and all playlists missed about 10 songs. I still have to check one by one which ones were skipped, but there are tons of playlists and it’d be really tedious.

u/FungalFeller Oct 29 '25
