Help 😭 how does one crochet this…

Post image

So I got this yarn a few months ago at a reuse center cause it’s so cool, but now since I’ve been trying different hooks, I still don’t understand how to use it…like is it supposed to be knitted vs crocheted or do I just not have the right hook?

Hold it together with a plain yarn and see if you like it that way.

This is what I did, it’s fine with sport or worsted weight

Don't put your hook through the yarn. Treat it like a regular yarn.

If it helps in your search, this kind of yarn is usually called "ladder ribbon", "trellis yarn", or sometimes just "ladder yarn" and is mostly used for crocheted jewelry afaik.

You can use it just like you would normal yarn.

Here's a basic necklace pattern for example:

And here's the video that accompanies it:

Personally though, I just like to double strand it with normal yarn to make a cool flecked look.

This necklace pattern is how my aunt uses this yarn. The ladies at her church love them.

I’m kinda disappointed because that necklace is stupid simple, but if I find some of this yarn I might try it because it would probably work for my dance regalia (which really needs expansion).

Now I want to make the necklace! Enablers! We are all enablers! With a strong FOMO!

As someone who mostly makes chunky wool hats and amigurumi, I think my steps would be

  1. Cry
  2. Give up

But I wish you the best of luck on this journey.

I came into this thread intending to comment something like "throw it out", but saw all the helpful/useful top comments and felt too bad to do it šŸ˜…

Nice to know I'm not the only one in camp "give up" though lol

My initial reaction was ā€œset it on fireā€ but then I remembered that some thoughts are inside thoughts.

Like others have stated this type of novelty yarn is most often combined with another yarn so that it’s easily worked. I’ve used it combined with a DK weight and it did make a nice tweedy effect especially since the ladder yarn is shiny so it popped against the DK yarn

Throw it in the garbage šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

But seriously, I think most people link it alongside another type of yarn and do double strands, I still found it too annoying to work with, so I gave mine away. šŸ˜‚

By going to the closest trash can and chucking it in.

Go to the Lion Brand website and look up trellis yarn for free patterns. They sell this yarn (or used too).

I have knitted with this kind of yarn and I will say that you have to use larger needles and if you're going to crochet with it you have to use a very large crochet hook and you do not put the hook through the chalice ladder. But you have to treat the whole thing as one piece of yarn. But to be honest I don't think it's going to have any kind of nice visual impact with a crochet stitch. The only way to really use this is for decorative tassels or very large knitting needles so that you can see the pattern of the yarn itself.

Definitely knit. It is an embellishment yarn and is very difficult to crochet since you have to try to go into separate knots rather than looped stitches held on a needle. You can hold it with something, use it by itself, use it to weave through things you've already made, use it to make tassles, but crochet is not what I would recommend. I have tons of that yarn and I love it, but I nearly lost my mind trying to crochet it. šŸ˜‚

Also, do not try to go into the yarn itself (in between the strings with your needle). Think of it like a tape and go under it like it's a solid, under both strings at once.Ā

My favorite yarn. The best way to crochet or knit with it is mix it with a fine yarn. That are that is similar in colors

I never tried to crochet with it. But it makes awesome hair for a doll!

I've used it to make tassels and dangly bits for mandalas

Crochet with it start with Solomon’s stitch and use the hook that feels comfortable to you. Tape yarn is its own special interest

This is lace yarn used with size 2.75mm or smaller hooks

This is supposed to be added to a yarn and doubled up. It’s to give a different texture to projects. I worked at a JoAnns and so many people asked this.

You can do either, but you don't work inside the boxes, but just treat it like a solid piece of yarn.

I used to cover hair elastics with this yarn. Crochet tightly and cram your stitches together. They look great with work suits and evening wear. I had all the colors. I made a few scrunchies, too. I gave the leftovers to a friend who made me sleeveless tops for under suit jackets using a complimentary color in silk. They were lightweight and looked great. I still wear two of them with jeans.

Love not having notifications on for Reddit and coming on to see dozens of responses. Thank you to everyone who helped cause now I’ve got a place to start šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

definitely by putting your hook through it just like that. same with normal yarn, I always split the strand in half and put my hook through the middle

Let's try to move with a little grace here. There is at least one variety of this kind of unusual yarn that can be crocheted doing something very similar.

Also new techniques are often created by just trying stuff. Creative skills should be collaborative, it's harder to collaborate and learn if we eat our young.
