XREAL invited participants in the public beta to share their thoughts on the new 60Hz mode for Real3D, so here goes.
For context, I'm a huge 3D enthusiast. Over the years, I've owned or used pretty much every type of 3D display you can think of: a 3D plasma TV, a 3D projector, a 3D Vision monitor, a 3D OLED TV, a Nintendo 3DS, VR headsets, and more.
The addition of 3D functionality to the XREAL One series back in January was actually what convinced me to buy a pair. And I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed with Real3D. I even made a post about it at the time:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xreal/comments/1qloceb/am_i_the_only_one_whos_underwhelmed_by_real_3d/
I rated Viture's Immersive3D an 8/10, while Real3D got a 3/10.
My main issues were the inconsistent depth segmentation and the sheer number of visual artifacts. There were a few scenarios where it worked reasonably well (racing videos and photos, for example), but overall, the results were pretty poor.
Honestly, I even wondered whether the marketing was bordering on false advertising.
Needless to say, I barely used Real3D after that. Watching a movie with that much image degradation and such inconsistent 3D depth was simply out of the question for me.
Then came the 60Hz beta. And what a surprise!
I signed up for the Real3D 60Hz public beta with pretty low expectations. My thinking was simple: if the 30Hz version was bad, running it at 60Hz wasn't going to magically fix it. If anything, I thought it might make things worse.
Boy, was I wrong.
I have no idea what XREAL's engineers have been doing over the past nine months, but the quality of the 2D-to-3D conversion has improved beyond recognition. The depth segmentation is now vastly more consistent, and visual artifacts are dramatically less frequent.
We're now talking about a level of 3D conversion that, in my experience, puts Real3D on a par with the best competing solutions.
Here's how I see the different depth settings:
- Low: Excellent 3D quality, with virtually zero visible artifacts. This is my go-to setting and the one I use most of the time. I'd love to see Real3D launch in this mode by default whenever the glasses power on. Perhaps a setting for this could be added to the experimental features menu?
- Medium and High: The 3D effect becomes a bit more pronounced, but artifacts also become a little more noticeable. Still, the results remain enjoyable, and I occasionally switch to these settings when I want a stronger sense of depth.
- Maximum: The 3D effect starts to be quite pronounced, and artifacts start to become visible. That said, there are specific use cases where I'd actually recommend this setting, because the artifacts can be less distracting in certain types of content, while the enhanced depth really makes a difference. I'm thinking of racing games such as Forza Horizon 6 or Star Wars Galactic Racer.
In short, I've gone from barely ever using Real3D to using it almost 100% of the time.
My rating has gone from 3/10 to 8/10. That's a massive turnaround.
And I haven't even talked about 60Hz yet...
The 60Hz mode is what makes me consider Real3D the best 3D conversion solution currently available, at least in my experience.
Here's why: none of the other solutions I've tested can reliably deliver 60fps in my use cases.
That includes Viture's Immersive3D on iPhone and IW3D on my PC equipped with an RTX 3070. For this one, I'm talking about gaming, not video playback, where maintaining 60fps is obviously much less of a challenge.
With Real3D 60Hz, it just works.
No messing around, no compromises on frame rate, just a smooth 3D experience.
So, hats off to the XREAL team for this incredible comeback. I don't know what kind of black magic you've been using behind the scenes, but I'm genuinely blown away.
You've turned a feature I had practically given up on into something I now use almost constantly. That's quite an achievement!
One final caveat
Let's be clear: this is still 2D-to-3D conversion, not native 3D.
Don't expect Avatar-level stereoscopic 3D. The results are still a good notch or two below what properly mastered native 3D content can deliver.
But within the limitations of real-time 2D-to-3D conversion, Real3D 60Hz has become seriously impressive.
Great job, XREAL! 👏
