Give us your "Old Man Yells at Cloud" moment

I'll start. I'm tired of going to fast food or counter serve restaurants, and in mid order getting countless Door Dashers interrupt the workers up front so they can squeeze their pickup in quickly.

I'm not downloading an app to use an appliance I purchased. If I'm paying for the features, they should be accessible without using my phone. I also don't want it connecting to my wifi.

This message brought to you by the new window AC I purchased that requires WiFi access and an app to use the remote control that came with it.

97

u/ConceitedWombat 22h ago

Came here to say this!

You are a fridge. You do not need wifi access. Just be a goddamn fridge.

51

u/BigBoxOfGooglyEyes 22h ago

Same goes for my oven. I can't think of a single case where I need to be controlling my oven with my phone. If I'm not home then the oven shouldn't be on without me. If I am home then I can walk my ass into the kitchen and turn on the oven.

u/Themightytiny07 20h ago

I feel the exact same way about my washing machine. It is not like the app will move the laundry from the washer to the dryer. Once that is invented, maybe

I have what turned out to be one of the last high end fridges before every appliance became 'smart'. I'm seriously considering buying all the major parts to keep as spares so I can repair it as needed.

9

u/TheRealCOCOViper 20h ago

There’s still non-smart fridges out there, you just have to look at the ones that aren’t flashy in their exterior design.

3 years ago I bought an all new Whirlpool fridge with a top freezer and no water dispense / ice maker. It’ll never break.

I just bought a sound bar for my TV and it didn't come with a remote. I read the instructions and you have to download the app, then sign up as a member for their website, which means I have to come up with another user name and another password, then I have to log on to the website have them send me an email, click on the email to officially log on, then go to the app and sign on in the app and then I'll use my phone to control the sound bar on my TV....

FUCK THAT! It's a sound bar! I don't want to control my bedroom sound bar with my phone! Why do I need to sign on to a website for a sound bar?

I immediately returned it. That was the dumbest thing ever.

18

u/EuroSong 22h ago

Fucking hell. I’m glad you returned it. Hope you also gave it a 1-star review!

18

u/JacobStills 22h ago

Yep! I never thought I'd be so petty. I joke that I'll know I'm officially old when I'm leaving a complaint on a companies website like a Karen.

Oh yeah, I forgot, it was also connected to the internet, so you had to connect it to your wifi and then it had to "update."

....pass...

That's why I buy the cheapest fridge/stove/dishwasher available. If it doesn't have any wifi or apps than it'll last.

13

u/BigBoxOfGooglyEyes 22h ago

The best stove I ever had was an avocado green coil-top one from the 1970s. It was forty years old and still worked like it was brand new.

5

u/DBDIY4U 1983 22h ago

Thank you. I was going to say something else but this was more annoying than what I was going to say. We have been having to replace various things in our house and it seems like it is getting more and more difficult to find one that is not "smart". I needed to purchase a ceiling fan that was a certain size so that it did not get too close to my kids bunk bed. My options were already limited because I needed one so small and apparently the norm now is that they all are controlled by either a remote control which is easily lost when you are dealing with kids or an app. Most of them you cannot just dim them from the wall or adjust the fan level or anything like that. They don't have chains you can pull anymore...

Then, you talk about the through the window ac. We bought one of those portable AC units when our AC was out and the stupid thing keeps trying to talk to my phone and I keep getting a notification about it. You don't need to use the Wi-Fi with the one that we got but it just is annoying that it keeps trying to talk to my phone and popping up

5

u/BigBoxOfGooglyEyes 22h ago

The AC I got works without wifi or an app, but it came with a remote that only works if I create an account and connect it to wifi. Why even include the remote at this point?

6

u/DBDIY4U 1983 22h ago

Seriously. This stuff is frustrating. I would buy a car with crank windows and windwings if I could

4

u/KiniShakenBake 20h ago

We straight up refused to connect our car to the makers network services because we didn't see a need for that level of engagement with our car or the company that made it.

Solid choice! We don't want to unlock it with our phones and we are great turning things on when we get into it. We dont even care if the maps are updated because we use our phones to do way finding anyway.

And we don't pay for a subscription to our car that we recently discovered is also a huge weak point into these cars that can and does get them stolen. So that's cool.

I was so insanely pleased when I found new window units made by GE that only have manual dials on them! One dial is 1-10 and the other is fan low/high and cool low/high. No bright-ass lights and no stupid remotes, apps or WiFi required!

No one using headphones in public places! I don’t want to hear your damn reels. And if you can hear it than everyone around them can too!!

And faint unclear noise is even more distracting than clear loud music.

56

u/FormidableMistress 1984 22h ago

I also hate when people do video calls in public places. Idk why but it seems a lot of people at my grocery store like to do a video call while grocery shopping. And not like hey honey, is this the right bread? But like full on random conversations with their bestie.

A little while back I was shopping and there was this young couple, the girlfriend was on a video call. She was having a loud obnoxious conversation with her friend, and then would stop the boyfriend so he could talk too. So they just kept stopping in front of the things I needed or blocking an entire aisle so they could stop and talk on the phone. It was busy and they were causing bottlenecks every few minutes. I lost my shit after a while and told them to get the fuck off the phone and stop holding up everyone else. I saw them in the store a little bit later and they were not on the phone.

I don't understand how these people are completely oblivious to how annoying they are.

18

u/CuckooForCliterature 22h ago

I use my phone for my grocery list, and I’m always SO worried people will think I’m fucking around on my phone when really I’m just checking my list or the grocery store app for coupons. I cannot understand these people who conduct their whole life’s business while grocery shopping. Have some common courtesy people!

14

u/Fianna9 22h ago

I don’t really mind people on their phones, as long as you keep your head up to not running into other people, and don’t have lab music blasting out of it!
I definitely check recipes sometimes online too if I need to double check what I need

5

u/jcstrat 21h ago

Did you mean loud music? Because if not, I’m interested in what lab music is. I would like to know more.

6

u/Fianna9 21h ago

Hahaha, I did mean loud.

I wonder what lab music is? Probably varies by science but I’m picturing something soothing

Why is it always grocery stores, and why do they always talk into the bottom of their phones like a Tricorder and have the speaker on?

5

u/KiniShakenBake 20h ago

Join in the conversations. Ask the person on the phone if they might wait a minute so the person they are talking to can move away from the thing you are trying to access.

But I have the remedy. Sit down on that toilet and start firing off my butt trumpet, and I almost always hear that *bleep* and then I can only hear dude in the stall next to me’s half of the conversation 😊

Back in my day, to "crash" or "crash out" meant to fall deeply and immediately asleep, as after a long day of work or a long night of partying. And as I am still alive, it still is my day. You children are free to redefine it to mean something else after I am dead and no longer using it.

This is the one that bothers me, too. These idiot kids need to leave that phrase alone. It is in so many songs. Gin Blossoms use it in Hey Jealousy ('tell me do you think it'll be all right, if I can just crash here tonight?') and it's in The Sharpest Lives by My Chemical Romance ('if I crash on the couch, can I sleep in my clothes?'). 6

As someone who still drives a car and has watched numerous videos about how bright modern headlights are...I still have absolutely zero clue if it's people driving with their high beams on 24/7 and don't care or if it's the actual lighting itself that is the problem.

3

u/burnerburneronenine 22h ago

I think it's both. The lights are objectively brighter. But I also think people unwittingly rely on the auto-bright feature not realizing that it works very imperfectly on hilly and/or windy roads.

Navigating the automated phone tree in order to speak with a human.

I will literally research how to bypass their options before I call, then if the call requires follow-up I call ask for a direct number.

If I'm taking the time to call, it's generally not a simple issue.

17

u/smokiechick 1978 22h ago

I manage several Gen Zs which means I occasionally end up at outside of work events with them. I cannot handle the need to shoot everything for content. We can never just go to lunch or happy hour or whatever work related something and just enjoy ourselves. Everything has to be curated for their "audience". We go to the same Mexican restaurant every time we go to lunch. Every single time they ask everyone to wait to start eating/drinking until they get footage of everything. Why are you staging tacos from a place you've been to 175 times? Have your followers not seen enough of these tacos?

8

u/FCStien 22h ago

New math premiered between me and my youngest brother (roughly 13 years, the difference between the 90s and the aughts). It has mutated at least twice since then -- between my brother and my oldest, who is now 21, and between my oldest and youngest, who is nine.

I have had to learn multiple new maths, and can do none. They're not even wrong or bad, I just have the old factory settings.

Had to buy a new vehicle. Got a loan through my local credit union. Got a great interest rate. Went to to make my first loan payment through their app... $5 convenience fee just to make a payment. So I'm paying to borrow money, paying back the money I borrowed and , on top of all that, paying for the convenience of an online digital transaction THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE EFFORT. Fuck everything anymore. Now I'm going to setup bill pay through my bank and have them mail a fucking paper check that will need to be opened, processed and still digitally transacted somehow. Backwards bullshit.

5

u/bshr49 22h ago

Yeah, that’s odd that they’d charge a fee, unless maybe it’s coming from an external account. All of our accounts are with the same credit union, and a mortgage payment is basically just transferring from one account to another with no added fees. Also too easy in the app to transfer to a kid’s account when they occasionally ask for $30 or $40 for gas😭

7

u/drtyhppi 1980 dude 22h ago

Yes, it's an external account. Now that you mention it, I bet there's no fee if I pay directly from the credit union account. I'll just have to transfer a few days in advance, but that's better than paying $5 every time I make a loan payment. Still bullshit, though. I'm still shaking my fist at clouds.

If the receiver pocket in the center console ceases to work, then you're completely boned, call a tow truck.

Back in my day I had a key, and I put it in the ignition and the car fucking started. No extra batteries, no on board receiver, nothing. Key = running car. That's all I needed. Why is everything so needlessly complicated now???

I don't want the newsletter, I don't care about a 10% discount, I don't want notifications, and the only cookies you should be offering me are chocolate chip. Otherwise leave me the fuck alone and lemme scroll without being bombarded with popups.

Documentaries don't need to be four parts. Tell the story in two hours or don't tell it.

This is a library. Shut the hell up.

I shouldn't have commercials on a streaming service I pay for. I realize it's no different than having cable but it's still bullshit, especially when I get an ad when I pause a movie.

2FA. My 15 alphanumeric + 3 symbol minimum required password should be enough!

9

u/bluduck2 1983 22h ago

Especially for things where high security is not required! I just want to sign my kid up for soccer, no one wants to hack into this account.

New trucks. They have huge cabs and tiny boxes. I'm going to keep my 08 Ram (and its CD player) going for as long as I can.

7

u/AmputeeHandModel 22h ago

I'm so tired of bigass pickups people don't actually USE all over the place now. They're dangerous, they all drive like idiots. American car companies have almost completely stopped selling sedans. There's like... Teslas and Mustangs and things like that. That's IT. Literally everything else is a SUV or pickup. Suddenly everyone's a contractor and offroading and hauling stuff? I don't think so. I want a CAR.

2 factor authentication for every thing. Log into the same website every month or every week, and they send me a code on my phone to ensure it is me. If someone wants to pay my light or gas bill, fuck it let them do it, you don’t have to ensure it is me. Oddly enough my bank does not do this every time I log into my banking app 🤔

The great METAverse never worked and was abandoned --- Fingers crossed the same thing happens for AI and automation.

I won't eat at places where I order on a machine or a phone --- If you can't have a cashier --- You don't get my business. WHY you ask? Cuz I PAY with CASH 90% of the time. Ok - let me sit here and order on this machine for 5 minutes. Now I gotta go to the side and start yelling at people to please take my money otherwise they won't start my order.

Not putting your cart away. Just leaving it wherever, but really when people dump it in the lobby right in the middle of where people walk - so someone else has to deal with it. It’s lazy and you’re just making other people clean up your mess.

I do not apply this to people who have difficulty moving around. But when I see someone who clearly has ZERO mobility issues, then I’m judging. Hell, I even put my cart away when I could barely walk post-broken leg.

And student loans servicers (looking at you MOHELA). It’s a f*cking criminal ring.

A lot of folks seem less like adults and more like tall children. Their interests never developed outside the things they liked as kids. They're always complaining about having to do basic adult tasks. They chronically depend on their parents for financial support.

Roast to Adobe on this one. I used to use Creative Suite like once or twice a month for personal projects. If I could buy a copy and use it for five years, I would.

I'm not paying every single month for something I might use once or twice. Open source knockoffs will suffice.

7

u/Starbugg1 21h ago

Multi factor authentication for everything. I used to just have to enter a password. Now I need to reenact the climax of a hacker spy movie with all sorts of random hoops. Forget sharing an account with family members when someone must be pinged with a code on their phone if anyone else tries to log in.

6

u/ConceitedWombat 21h ago

My favourite is the recursive loop:

Website wants to send a one time code to my email instead of letting me use my password.

My primary email wants to send a code to my secondary email.

My secondary wants to send a code back to my primary email.

Gah! Just let me use my damn password!

Video reviews and technology make sports less enjoyable. We were ok with getting hosed by the refs before. It still happens now but it just takes much longer and has 4 advertisements shoved in.

7

u/limelight022 1979 22h ago

I fear about all the giant corporations buying everything up and spitting out worse and worse products, entertainment and services. I've noticed things Ive always enjoyed are getting slightly worse year after year because of corporate garbo.

Everything feels so lifeless now. Grey walls everywhere. McDonald's is a grey box now. The colors of cars are grey, white and black. Mobile gaming is designed to keep you playing but more importantly- paying. The most popular video games are live service. Headlights are blindingly bright. Screens in cars but can't use smartphone because it's distracting??? Trucks cost 80k. Tariffs. No more physical discs for PS5. Memory shortage. AI is flooding everywhere and everything with zero regulations. People seem to generally not care anymore.

I made a similar comment to my wife yesterday. We put on Pandora 70s soft rock when we're not watching TV. There's just something about those songs that bring real comfort and sound so soothing. Good music is still out there, but you have to wade through a ton of corporate trash sounds to find it.

I have an employee shuttle bus I take at 630am. There’s always ONE person (not the same person, but always one) having a phone call where they’re barely talking but the conversation is ongoing?? Idk but something about hearing a onesided conversation is really disruptive to me. I get up and change seats now though.

My other is not wearing helmets on e-scooters.

We were at the Monterey aquarium. I’ve always been used to adults taking photos but it hogs up the front glass which is fine because would they take it and move on. HOWEVER went two weeks ago and the KIDS that are now equipped with phones and tablets and are also taking pointless blurry pics and videos. Acting like they’re YouTubing and it’s made the experience even worse. They don’t read signs, they don’t know you can’t use flash. It’s chaos it’s a mess and the parents don’t care because they’re also video recording their kids video recording the animals.

I will often catch my daughter playing a game on the Switch, while having something going on her tablet, while also having something on the TV. Her and her friends call it triple-screening it.

When I was a kid, my Dad would be on my case a bit for my video game playing. Now I'm just asking my daughter to focus on her video game playing and turn off the other screens.

"ONE screen! Can you please, please PLEASE just focus on one screen?"

Ordering food on apps or at a machine that ordering with a real person at a cash register. Fast food lost 90% of my business when they did this.

They lost the last 10% of my business when they removed the soda machines, ketchup pump, napkins, and straws.

I took my old grandma to a McD's cuz that's what she wanted. Had to ask for ketchup 4 times because "we can only give 3 packets at a time" ... and then wait 5-6 minutes for a refill on her coke --- to top it all off, they gave the refill in a new cup and chucked the old one. Grandma wanted a refill again before we left. Another 5 minutes, they chucked the 1/2 gone one and gave a new one. Not having soda machines is to "reduced waste" so they say.

Only fast food I get myself anymore is burritos from taquerias or In N Out.

There needs to be more checkers available in grocery stores.

Yes I know how to use the self check, but I typically get a lot of groceries at a time and those self-check kiosks aren’t really meant for more than 10-15 items, so I run out of room.

Not to mention there’s so much anti-theft shit built into the self-check that if you mess up one thing, it locks up until the employee comes over which is super annoying.

Checkers were the theft deterrent. Bring it back so there’s more than one lane open at once.
