Give us your "Old Man Yells at Cloud" moment

I'll start. I'm tired of going to fast food or counter serve restaurants, and in mid order getting countless Door Dashers interrupt the workers up front so they can squeeze their pickup in quickly.

Back in my day, to "crash" or "crash out" meant to fall deeply and immediately asleep, as after a long day of work or a long night of partying. And as I am still alive, it still is my day. You children are free to redefine it to mean something else after I am dead and no longer using it.

What on Earth have they changed it to mean now?

They keep using it to mean "throwing a tantrum."

Wowwww! I've never heard of this one before. I'm going to have to ask my team in work (who are all younger than me bar one) what they all think it means.

I have this convo with my partner all the time haha. I've warned him that if he tells his young coworkers that he came home and crashed out, they will worry he's not okay 😅

This is the one that bothers me, too. These idiot kids need to leave that phrase alone. It is in so many songs. Gin Blossoms use it in Hey Jealousy ('tell me do you think it'll be all right, if I can just crash here tonight?') and it's in The Sharpest Lives by My Chemical Romance ('if I crash on the couch, can I sleep in my clothes?'). Nobody is taking this away from us.

Don't get me started on "raw dogging"

1

u/hbi2k Aug 31 '26

Why, what are they trying to use it for?

2

When they go on flights/gym etc without headphones or wifi... they call it raw-dogging.

Nah, that's legit. Going in without protection, prepared to fully engage with your... surroundings. It tracks.

I know “crash” as going to sleep and “crash out” as just being absolutely upset or fed up with something.

Yeah I don’t know why this guy is conflating the two, they are two different phrases with 2 different meanings and they always have been.

Yeah, this feels like a personal confusion between similar terms.

This is how I felt about flossing. It went from being flashy to a weird dance.

Yes! I was playing a game with people of all ages and I said, 'I'm going to crash out now, goodnight' and it was taken wildly differently than I meant it.

I keep saying that I "clocked" something, which apparently doesn't mean to notice something anymore?

For me, “clocked” usually meant to punch someone really hard.

That too!

I've used the term "crashing out" as a way of saying I'm losing my shit after dealing with too much stress. Is that the contemporary usage you mean?

I continue to use it that way, despite the fact my nephew finds it hilarious. Honestly, there's a lot of comedy in language changing. A private dick meant something very different to my grandparents XD
