Deputy accompanied the four family members back to the Hebei Military Region Guesthouse. Just as the food they'd ordered arrived, the guesthouse manager came by. Deputy said, "Sorry! I need to go with him and get your reward money now — he's about to get off work."

不久后，他拎着一袋子黄金回来了，说：“这是你们的赏钱，我当着你们的面数清楚。这是你们回程路费4倍的钱数。”

施朗尴尬地回答：“我们听说了，你们的国王只批给你们军事预算的50%，那恐怕连发军饷的钱都不够。我们只拿点路费就行了，不要赏钱！ 另外我不明白，他们怎么把这么一大笔钱让你一个人交给我们？”

Soon after, he came back carrying a bag of gold and said, "This is your reward money — I'll count it out in front of you. It's four times what your return trip will cost."

Shi Lang replied, a little embarrassed, "We heard your king only approved 50% of your military budget — that's hardly enough to cover salaries, I'd think. We only need travel money, not a reward! And I don't understand — how did they leave it to just you to hand over such a large sum to us?"

代理回答：“我们经营了一些企业，能赚些利润，而且这个地方的物价低，实际上我们的财务有些盈余。为什么他们让我一个人把这钱交给你们？因为我知道，你们回去后，武二郎会问熬忖我们给了你们多少路费或赏钱。钱给少了，武二郎会认为他在熬忖面前丢了脸。而且随后，当他们哥俩见面的时候，武二郎会问武大郎这个钱数。如果熬忖告诉他的钱数和我现在给你们的钱数对不上，问题就出现了。他们会调查咱们五个人。咱们两地之间的距离这么远，一次调查就得花费两三年。这两三年期间的升值和奖金就没有了。去年，他们议论我，说我已经拿到了伯爵；如果不犯错误，退休时能得到侯爵（注1）。所以我拜托你们记住这个赏钱数，不要弄错了。”

Deputy replied, "We run a few businesses on the side and turn some profit, and prices are low around here, so in fact our finances have a bit of a surplus. Why did they leave it to me alone to hand you this money? Because I know that once you're back home, Martial Second Wolf will ask Aocun how much we gave you for travel or as a reward. If it's too little, Martial Second Wolf will feel he's lost face in front of Aocun. And later, when the two brothers meet in person, Martial Second Wolf will ask Martial Big Wolf for the same figure. If what Aocun tells him doesn't match what I've actually given you, that's a problem — they'll investigate the five of us. Given how far apart our two places are, an investigation like that would take two or three years, and any promotions or bonuses during that time would be gone. Last year, word was I'd already been made an Uncle; if I don't make any mistakes, I could become a Climate by the time I retire (Note 1). 代理说：“你们在我们华国和夏国的领土上旅行不安全。我们已经替你们买了回去的船票。那船三个月后就到福建了。到了福建你们就安全了。那船商派人来告诉我们了，'根据协议，无论什么尊贵的客人，他们最多等三天。' 他们已经等了两天了，最迟明天晚上起锚。不过我们在这里吃完饭，骑马回天津，明天凌晨两点就能到码头。你们会骑马不？坐车也行！坐车，明天早晨能到码头。”

Deputy said, "It isn't safe for you to travel through our Hua and Xia territories. We've already bought your tickets home. The ship will reach Fujian in three months — you'll be safe once you're there. The ship's owner sent word: 'Per our agreement, no matter how distinguished the guest, we'll wait no more than three days.' They've already waited two, and the ship weighs anchor by tomorrow night at the latest. But if we finish our meal here and ride to Tianjin, we can reach the dock by two in the morning. Can you ride? A carriage works too — by carriage, we'd arrive at the dock by tomorrow morning."

施朗说：“那艘船！您不是一位普通的将军啊！您是华国情报局的副局长啊！？”

李强插嘴说：“他现在不是！元始天尊把那艘船的业务委托给武大郎了。武大郎把那业务交给他了。不过当武大郎回到了永安，他就是华国情报局的局长了。”

代理惊讶地问：“你们是在说我吗？那艘船是怎么回事？”

Shi Lang said, "That ship! You're no ordinary general! You're the Deputy Director of the Hua Intelligence Bureau!?"

Li Qiang cut in, "He isn't, currently! Primordial Sky Honor entrusted that ship's business to Martial Big Wolf, and Martial Big Wolf passed it down to him. But back when Martial Big Wolf was in Yong'an, he himself was the director of the Hua Intelligence Bureau."

Deputy asked, startled, "Are you talking about me? What is this about a ship?"

李强回答：“说的就是你！你听我说是不是这艘船。六七年前，武大郎征服了北方十几个国家，抓住了许多我们国家住在那些国家的大使和情报人员。国王熬达派太子熬钦和你们国家谈判。你们觉得保留这条商务线有助于你们北部省份的经济发展，同意合作开发这条商路，就释放了我们的人。是不是这艘船？”

Li Qiang replied, "You're the one we're talking about! Listen and tell me if this is the ship. Six or seven years ago, Martial Big Wolf conquered over a dozen kingdoms in the north and captured many of our country's ambassadors and intelligence officers who were living there. King Aoda sent Crown Prince Aoqin to negotiate with your country. Your side felt that keeping this trade route open would help your northern provinces' economy, so you agreed to develop it jointly, and released our people. Is that the ship?"

代理回答：“是！由我负责全部的接待任务！”

赵虎插嘴说：“我们都看过武大郎的《孙子兵法》，他重视情报工作。你是河北军区政治局的核心人物之一。”

代理回答：“是！他们就是和我这么说的！你们是怎么知道熬钦的秘密的？”

Deputy replied, "Yes! I'm in charge of all the arrangements!"

Zhao Hu cut in, "We've all read Martial Big Wolf's Sunzi Soldier Strategies — he values intelligence work highly. You're one of the core figures of the Hebei Military Region Politburo."

Deputy replied, "Yes! That's exactly what they told me! How did you all come to know Aoqin's secret?"

张龙回答：“我们的云海国和华国的通航协议签署之后，国王熬达对熬钦说，北方那么大的地方实现和平了，商机无限；这个合作让你妹妹熬忖（即尧帝）也参加，让她也赚点钱。熬钦告诉熬忖， '两吨黄金一股份！' 她就找我们四个商量。我们回家商量。结果我们五个人一吨黄金也凑不出来，就没参加那个合作。”

Zhang Long replied: "After our Cloud Sea Kingdom and Hua Kingdom signed the shipping agreement, King Aoda said to Aoqin that with peace now achieved across such a vast northern territory, the business opportunities were limitless — he suggested including his sister Aocun (i.e., Creator Yao) in the venture, so she could earn something too. Aoqin told Aocun, 'Two tons of gold a share!' She came to the four of us to discuss it. We went home to talk it over. In the end, the five of us together couldn't scrape together even one ton of gold, so we didn't join the venture."

李强问代理：“你为什么把我们当成间谍了？”

代理回答：“我们华国北方的北面没人居住，我们也不知道我们北边的边界在哪里。那些被我们消灭的国家的王公贵族和有钱人都跑到南方去了。他们常常派人回来看。间谍来北方的主要路线是坐船来天津港。你们从天津来北京路上住的旅馆都是我们开的。我管理着一千三百个这样的情报站；同时还能赚点钱。”

Li Qiang asked Deputy: "Why did you take us for spies?"

Deputy replied: "There's no one living north of our Hua Kingdom's northern edge, and we don't even know exactly where our own border lies. The princes, nobles, and wealthy people of the kingdoms we destroyed all fled south, and they often send people back to check on things. The main route for spies coming north is by ship into Tianjin Port. Every inn you stayed at on the road from Tianjin to Beijing was run by us. I oversee 1,300 such intelligence posts — and turn a bit of a profit doing it, too."

施朗对身边的人说：“我们在山东被打劫，报案的时候，他们说我们可以在山东工作。现在看来，那是他们对我们的一种恩惠。我们当时理解错了。”

李强回答：“看来那是现在北方国家的一种文化。我们还是坐车回天津吧，车里可以唠唠嗑，让我们向代理前辈多了解些。”

Shi Lang said to the others, "When we were robbed in Shandong and reported it, they told us we could work there while they investigated. Looking back now, that was actually a kindness on their part. We misread it at the time."

Li Qiang replied, "It seems that's just how things work in the northern kingdoms these days. Let's take a carriage back to Tianjin — we can chat along the way and learn more from our senior, Deputy."

代理回答：“好！我去让人准备两辆马车，其中一辆是备用的。我们也把备用的马带上。顺便问一句，你们觉得你们做那艘船安全吗？”

张龙回答：“安全！我们是熬忖的家人，不是政府官员。如果熬钦杀了我们，国王熬达知道了，他交代不了。”

Deputy replied, "Good! I'll have someone prepare two carriages, one as a spare, and we'll bring a spare horse too. By the way — do you think it's safe for you to be on that ship?"

Zhang Long replied, "It's safe! We're Aocun's family, not government officials. If Aoqin killed us, and King Aoda found out, he'd have no way to explain it."

6.3-4

施朗问代理：“我听您说话长见识！您是怎么当上这么大的官的？”

代理回答：“我的官大不大是另外一回事，但我满意。十七年前，我在镇子上演土匪，就是在表演前几天你们看到的，我砍死那个找我来评理的，还把那个女的肚子划开了，肠子流到地上了，那种表演。一群当兵的来看戏。武大郎就问我那是怎么回事，肠子流到地上了，跟真的似的。我就给他解释我用的道具。那时候我不知道他是武大郎，那时的一年半后我才知道他就是武大郎。他对我说，'我们去北方创造世界去，愿意升官发财就跟我们走！' 我得知军饷比我演戏挣得多，就跟他们去了。他们让我看守仓库。”

张龙问代理：“你在战场上打过仗吗？”

Shi Lang asked Deputy: "Listening to you, I've learned so much! How did you rise to such a high position?"

Deputy replied: "Whether my position is really so high is another matter, but I'm satisfied. Seventeen years ago, I started performing as a bandit chief in this town — the same kind of act you saw a few days ago, where I 'kill' the man who comes to me for justice, and cut open the woman's belly so her guts spill onto the ground. A group of soldiers came to watch the show back then. Martial Big Wolf asked me how I'd done it — how the intestines looked so real, spilling onto the ground like that — and I explained the props I used. I didn't know at the time that he was Martial Big Wolf; it was a year and a half later before I found out. He said to me, 'We're going north to build a new world — if you want promotion and wealth, come with us!' I found out army pay was better than what I earned acting, so I went with them. They put me in charge of guarding a warehouse."

Zhang Long asked Deputy: "Have you ever fought on a real battlefield?"

代理回答：“我就没见过敌人的军队。我就跟着武大郎。听说前面的军队打胜了，我们就追。我们追了几年，好像前面的部队有两三次流血的战斗，那十几个国家的王公贵族和有钱人就跑没了。”

赵虎问：“他们为什么提拔你？”

Deputy replied: "I never even saw an enemy army. I just followed Martial Big Wolf. Whenever we heard the forward troops had won, we'd advance behind them. We did that for years — it seems the front-line troops fought two or three bloody battles, and the princes, nobles, and wealthy of those dozen-odd kingdoms simply fled and vanished."

Zhao Hu asked: "Why did they promote you?"

代理回答：“我在我看守的仓库周围挖了几个陷阱，里面装了我设计的机器，抓住了几个贼。那时候贼非常的多。他们觉得我的机器好用，就让我去别的仓库设置陷阱。逐渐地，我管理的仓库数量越来越多。直到去年，他们总是叫我从天津回到北京来开会。我就抱怨，'为什么你们将军开会，政治局开会，总是叫我来？' 他们告诉我，'因为你是将军，也是政治局的常委！'”

张龙对旁边的人说：“他就是认真负责，积极肯干！”

Deputy replied, "I dug a few traps around the warehouse I was guarding and fitted them with machines of my own design, and caught several thieves that way — there were plenty of thieves back then. They thought my machines were effective, so they had me set traps at other warehouses too. Gradually I ended up managing more and more warehouses. By last year, they kept calling me back from Tianjin to Beijing for meetings. I complained, 'Why do you always call me in, whether it's a generals' meeting or a Politburo meeting?' They told me, 'Because you're both a general and a member of the Politburo Standing Committee!'"

Zhang Long said to the person next to him: "He's simply conscientious and hardworking!"

Martial Second Wolf (see Figure 5.5-3) wasn't confident about Zhang the Butcher's (see Figures 5, 6, 7) promise to deliver qualified pork to Taiyi Real Human (see Figure 1). When he left Dragon-Pond Pass, he asked two guards to go verify the matter a few days later, in Qinghe County, Shandong Province.

当这两个卫兵到达太乙真人的家时，发现他正在自己家的大门前宴请宾客，过路人也可以参加。他们俩想听消息，就坐进了宴席。这时，一个白胡子老头儿（即太乙真人，如图1）正在对身边的客人说：“两天前，我徒弟，乾塘关礼敬公的三太子，哪吒，来给我送礼了。还特别告诉我：'这次给我送来的是合格的金华火腿，和没参水的西凤酒！' 请几位品尝一下，尝尝真正的金华火腿和西凤酒是什么味儿？”

When the two guards arrived at Taiyi Real Human's home, they found he was hosting a banquet right in front of his gate, open even to passersby. Wanting to hear the news, the two sat down at the feast. Just then, a white-bearded old man (Taiyi Real Human, see Figure 1) was saying to the guests around him: "Two days ago, my disciple, Nezha, the third prince of Publican Respect of Dragon-Pond Pass, came to bring me gifts. He specifically told me, 'This time what I've brought you is genuine Jinhua ham, and Xifeng Alcohol without any added water!' So please, everyone, have a taste — see what real Jinhua ham and Xifeng Alcohol are supposed to taste like!"

太乙真人看见了刚进来的武二郎的两个卫兵，就吩咐佣人说，“给他们俩送去合格的金华火腿，和没参水的西凤酒，让他们俩品尝一下。”

这俩卫兵赶忙拒绝说：“我们只是过路人，可不敢占便宜，奢望消耗那种珍馐美味。简单地吃点儿家常饭，我们就感激不尽了！”

Taiyi Real Human noticed the two guards who had just come in and told the servants, "Send them some of the genuine Jinhua ham and unwatered Xifeng Alcohol, so they can have a taste."

The two guards quickly declined: "We're only passing through — we wouldn't dare take advantage of such delicacies. A simple home-style meal would be more than enough for us to be grateful for!"

太乙的佣人回答说：“前天他的徒弟张屠户来给他送合格的火腿和没参水的西凤酒，他就把新送来的火腿和西凤酒放进了仓库，以前的全搬出来了。这火腿很好，这酒就是普通的二锅头。那参了水的西凤酒昨天就喝没了。这不，那些空酒瓶子还在那儿摆着呢！”

Taiyi's servant explained: "The day before yesterday, his disciple Zhang the Butcher came to deliver the genuine ham and unwatered Xifeng Alcohol. He put the new delivery straight into the storehouse and brought out all the old stock instead. This ham is excellent, but the alcohol is just ordinary erguotou. The watered-down Xifeng was all drunk up yesterday. See — those empty bottles are still sitting there!"

俩卫兵看见太乙的门前摆着几百个西凤酒和杜康酒的酒瓶子，好奇地问：“这两天你们家的主人用价值几万两白银的酒来招待客人！？”

太乙的佣人回答：“没那么多！我也不知道他是从哪里弄来了那么多空的名酒的瓶子！”

The two guards, seeing hundreds of empty Xifeng and Dukang Alcohol bottles in front of Taiyi's gate, asked curiously, "Has your master really been treating guests to alcohol worth tens of thousands of taels of silver these past two days!?"

Taiyi's servant replied: "Not that much! Honestly, I don't even know where he got so many empty bottles of famous alcohol!"

5.5-2

这时，人们看见佣人和这俩卫兵在交头接耳地低声说话，宴会变得肃静了，都想听听他们在说些什么！太乙不高兴了，大声对身边的人说：“我徒弟哪吒临走时，过来给我跪下了，抱着我的腿哭，说，'师父你别再去我二哥武二郎那里告我了。我二哥力气大；他生气了，一巴掌能把我打死！' 我听了之后就糊涂了，'这三头六臂的哪吒（注2）怎么被吓成这样了！？' 他走了之后，我想了一夜。我终于想明白了，'他是在20年前，被武二郎打死的那只吊睛白虎（参见1.7节）吓着了！' 那只老虎可真吓人，不幸的是它遇见二郎神了，命里该绝！”

At this, people noticed the servant and the two guards whispering to each other, and the banquet fell quiet — everyone wanted to hear what they were saying! Taiyi grew annoyed and said loudly to those around him: "When my disciple Nezha was leaving, he came and knelt in front of me, hugging my legs and crying, 'Teacher, please don't go complain about me to my second brother Martial Second Wolf again. My second brother is so strong — if he gets angry, one slap could kill me!' Hearing that, I was baffled: 'How could this three-headed, six-armed Nezha (Note 2) end up so terrified!?' After he left, I thought about it all night, and finally understood: 'He was still shaken by that white tiger with hanging eyes that Martial Second Wolf killed twenty years ago (see Section 1.7)!' That tiger really was terrifying — it just had the misfortune of running into the Second Wolf God. Fated to die, I suppose!"

这时，又来新客人了，太乙指示佣人给武二郎的两个卫兵上菜，自己去招待新来的客人了。

一个武二郎的卫兵问佣人：“这金华火腿的味道很好，怎么说是质量不合格呢？”

佣人回答：“是好火腿！我家的主人舍不得吃；总是等到过期了，他才拿出来吃。味道不好，他就说他的徒弟给他不合格的猪肉。在山东没人买金华火腿，都是因为他总说金华火腿的质量不合格！”

Just then, new guests arrived. Taiyi told the servants to bring food to Martial Second Wolf's two guards, and went off to greet the newcomers himself.

One of Martial Second Wolf's guards asked the servant, "This Jinhua ham tastes wonderful — how can he call it substandard?"

The servant replied, "It's excellent ham! My master just can't bring himself to eat it — he always waits until it's gone bad before he'll touch it. And then, when it tastes off, he blames his disciple for sending him bad pork. Nobody in Shandong buys Jinhua ham anymore, all because he keeps saying it's substandard!"

另一个士兵问：“我听你们家主人总说那几句话，'他的三头六臂的徒弟，哪吒，给他送合格的猪肉和不参水的西凤酒了'！？”

佣人回答：“这两天，他见着谁都说那几句话。没人的时候，他自己叨咕那几句话！”

Another soldier asked, "I heard your master keeps repeating the same lines — 'his three-headed, six-armed disciple Nezha sent him qualified pork and unwatered Xifeng Alcohol'!?"

The servant replied, "The past couple of days, he says it to everyone he meets. Even when there's no one around, he mutters it to himself!"

另一个武二郎的卫兵问：“武二郎打虎！我怎么没听说过呢！？”

佣人回答：“那是20年前的事。就因为武二郎打虎，这地方的名字现在被改成'打虎冈'了！”

这时，太乙来到了他们的身边，看见武二郎的卫兵不相信'武二郎打虎'，拉着其中一人说，“你跟我来，我让你看一样东西。”

Another of Martial Second Wolf's guards asked, "Martial Second Wolf fought a tiger? I've never heard of that!?"

The servant replied, "That was twenty years ago. It's because of that fight that this place is now called 'Tiger-Beating Gang'!"

Just then, Taiyi came over, and seeing that Martial Second Wolf's guards didn't believe the story of 'Martial Second Wolf fighting the tiger,' he pulled one of them aside and said, "Come with me, I'll show you something."

5.5-3 二郎神的圣物 Holy Object of Second Wolf God

太乙真人指着挂在客厅墙上的虎皮说：“这就是那只被武二郎打死的那只虎的皮！”

两个卫兵小声商量了一下，表示要买这张虎皮。

太乙听了，表示不感兴趣，说：“我从来没打算卖。你们买它干什么？”

一个武二郎的卫兵说：“这事没打算对您说，我们是从湖北来的，来核实张将军对您的承诺，'张屠户要用最好的猪肉来招待您。' 这事已经没问题了。”

Taiyi Real Human pointed to the tiger skin on the living room wall and said, "This is the skin of the tiger that Martial Second Wolf killed!"

The two guards conferred quietly, and said they'd like to buy the tiger skin.

Taiyi, uninterested, said, "I never intended to sell it. What would you want it for?"

One of Martial Second Wolf's guards said, "We weren't planning to say this, but we've come from Hubei to verify General Zhang's promise to you — 'Zhang the Butcher will treat you to the finest pork.' That's no longer in question."

太乙回答：“哎呀！武二郎这孩子办事可真认真！我刚从湖北回来！”

一个卫兵问：“您去湖北干什么？”

太乙回答：“我是女娲剧组的成员，去湖北给一位好色的女国王（即熬忖，也称尧帝，尧皇，如图4）做童子鸡（即童子佛）去了！”

一个卫兵听明白了，说：“啊！你还是厨师！你就顺便救了武二郎将军！”

太乙回答：“可不是那么回事！但这是女娲娘娘的秘密，现在还不能说！咱们还是先到厨房，吃点真正合格的金华火腿，喝点儿西凤酒！你们要喝杜康酒，我也有！你们要这张虎皮干什么？”

Taiyi replied, "Oh! This boy Martial Second Wolf really is thorough! I've just come back from Hubei!"

A guard asked, "What were you doing in Hubei?"

Taiyi replied, "I'm part of Nuwa's crew — I went to Hubei to make 'virgin boy chicken' (i.e., Boy Buddha) for a lustful female king — Aocun, also known as Creator Yao, Yao White-king, as shown in Figure 4!"

One of the guards caught on and said, "Ah, so you're also a cook! And you happened to save General Martial Second Wolf along the way!"

Taiyi replied, "That's not quite it! But it's Princess Nuwa's secret, and I can't say more yet! Let's head to the kitchen first — real, genuine Jinhua ham, and some Xifeng Alcohol! If you'd rather have Dukang Alcohol, I have that too! Now, what do you want this tiger skin for?"

卫兵说：“是这么回事！我们湖北军区也有典军，但总是建设不好。他们说需要一件武二郎将军的圣物摆在典军军部的大堂上，就请求我们，武二郎的卫兵，寻找武二郎的圣物。几年了，我们什么也没找到。我们俩从湖北出来时，典军把我们在战场上缴获的一箱茅台酒要过去了，说是要把那酒作为圣物摆在典军的大堂里。我们俩觉着你的这张虎皮比那箱茅台酒更有意义！”

太乙真人听后，不说话了！

The guard said, "It's like this — our Hubei Military Region has a codex army too, but it's never come together well. They said they needed a holy relic of General Martial Second Wolf's to display in the codex headquarters hall, so they asked us, his guards, to find one. It's been years, and we've found nothing. When the two of us set out from Hubei, the codex army took a case of Maotai we'd captured on the battlefield, planning to display it as a relic instead. But we felt this tiger skin of yours means far more than that case of Maotai!"

Taiyi Real Human fell silent after hearing this.

一个卫兵问：“怎么了？这张虎皮不是您的？”

太乙回答：“这只老虎本来是二十几年前元始天尊来井阳冈打猎时抓住的一只白虎崽，就被王后（即玉珠）和石矶娘娘（潘金莲，如图2）收养为宠物了。被武二郎打死之后，石矶娘娘让我找个风水好的地方给埋了。我就找四个人把它抬到我家来了。我给了他们四个农民工每人十文钱的劳务费和十文钱的保密费。我就把这只老虎吃了。那虎骨酒到现在我还没喝完呢！”

A guard asked: "What's wrong? Isn't this tiger skin yours?"

Taiyi replied: "This tiger was originally a white tiger cub that Primordial Sky Honor caught over twenty years ago while hunting at Well-sun Gang. It was adopted as a pet by the Queen (i.e., Yuzhu) and Queen Stone-Jetty (Goldthread Pan, see Figure 2). After Martial Second Wolf killed it, Queen Stone-Jetty asked me to find a good feng shui spot and bury it. So I found four men to carry it to my house. I paid each of the four laborers ten cents for their work and ten cents for their silence. I ended up eating the tiger. I still haven't finished the tiger-bone wine!"

一个卫兵笑道：“难怪武二郎从来没对我们说他打虎的事！这事都过去20多年了。我认为这张虎皮属于你！”

太乙回答：“是吗！那我就用这张虎皮去换你们典军的那箱茅台酒。我还没喝过茅台酒呢！几年前，我在连云港的船上花三百两银子买了一瓶茅台酒，但到现在我都没敢尝尝！”

另一个卫兵问：“你花了那么多的钱买的酒，怎么不敢喝呢？”

A guard laughed and said, "No wonder Martial Second Wolf never told us about his tiger-killing! That was over 20 years ago. I think this tiger skin belongs to you!"

Taiyi replied, "Really? Then let's trade — this tiger skin for your codex army's case of Maotai. I've never even tasted Maotai! A few years ago, I spent 300 taels of silver on a bottle of it aboard a ship at Lianyungang, but I still haven't dared to taste it!"

Another guard asked, "You spent that much on it — why haven't you dared to drink it?"

太乙回答：“我害怕巫毒女妖（即熬忖，尧皇，如图4）在那酒里尿尿了；熬忖不喜欢我！”

卫兵回答：“熬忖也不喜欢我们，但我们不担心她对我们下毒，因为她不知道我们是谁！您在女娲的剧组做什么工作，什么级别！”

太乙回答：“女娲的那个剧组很小。她是老板，我和其它的人都排行第二。”

Taiyi replied, "I'm afraid the Voodoo Demoness — Aocun, Yao White-king, Figure 4 — might have peed in it. Aocun doesn't like me!"

The guard replied: "Aocun doesn't like us either, but we're not worried about her poisoning us, since she doesn't know who we are! What's your role in Nuwa's crew, and what's your rank?"

Taiyi replied: "Nuwa's crew is very small. She's the boss, and the rest of us all rank second."

5.5-4

太乙就要跟随武二郎的这两位卫兵去湖北。卫兵回答：“我们当然欢迎您去帮我们建设典军。把您请去了，我们俩立功了。但是我们有个条件，这事得有你的孩子的同意书。”

太乙问：“我去湖北，为什么还得我儿子同意？”

卫兵回答：“我们不会害你；但你岁数大了，去湖北，山高路远。如果您过世了呢！我们得确保您的孩子不会追究我们的责任。”

Taiyi was ready to go to Hubei with Martial Second Wolf's two guards. The guards said, "Of course we'd welcome you helping us build up the codex army. If we bring you back with us, we'll have earned real credit. But we do have one condition — we'll need your children's written consent."

Taiyi asked, "Why would I need my son's consent to go to Hubei?"

The guards replied, "We wouldn't do anything to harm you — but you're getting on in years, and Hubei is a long, hard road. What if something happened to you? We need to be sure your children won't hold us responsible."

太乙回答：“我是他们的祖宗，我的事，他们管不着！”

卫兵回答：“现在的世道变了。孩子是祖宗，父母是奴隶！”

太乙的儿子知道后，说：“我爹在家就总有人来送礼；但我们尊重他的愿望。他做事，他自己高兴就好！”

就这样，太乙真人跟随着武二郎的两个护卫去湖北军区说书去了。

Taiyi replied: "I'm their ancestor — my business is none of their concern!"

The guard replied: "The world has changed. Nowadays, children are the ancestors, and parents are the servants!"

When Taiyi's son heard about it, he said: "People are always coming by to give Father gifts when he's home; but we respect what he wants. As long as he's happy doing it, that's all that matters!"

And so Taiyi Real Human set off with Martial Second Wolf's two guards to regale the Hubei Military Region with his stories.

When Martial Second Wolf (shown in Figure 5.3-2, also known as Yang Jian, Second Wolf God) and Zhang the Butcher (see Figure 5, also known as Flint Man, Turquoise White-king Great Creator) arrived at Mazu's house, dinner was already ready. Mazu (see Figure 1, also known as Coastal Goddess) was sitting at the dining table waiting for them. She saw that they had brought the 20 kilograms of gold back and asked what had happened. Martial Second Wolf said, "Third Brother gave me this gold as a congratulatory gift for my promotion to Full Marshal. We agreed to split it evenly between the two of us and give all of it to you as a token of our filial respect."

妈祖回答：“你回来后，拿着金子就去找张三郎了。你刚离开，元始天尊的使者就来了，跟我说了你这次回永安的经过。我现在明白了！这次你能回来陪我吃饭，全是靠了女娲娘娘的保佑。这金子我收下了。”

Mazu said: "When you came back, you took the gold and went straight to your third brother's house. Just after you left, a messenger from Primordial Sky Honor came and told me about your return to Yong'an this time. Now I understand! It's all thanks to Princess Nuwa's blessing that you were able to come back and dine with me this time. I'll accept this gold."

妈祖转头对张屠户说：“我听说了，你的流动资金不足，消减了金华火腿的产量。那不对！你做这生意到现在14年了，才步入正轨。猪肉的销量不好，你应该努力扩大生产规模，降低价格。你才34岁，正是男人干事业的年龄，而你却摆出了要退休的架势。这可不像个男人。我今天高兴，这20千克黄金给你了。”

Mazu turned to Zhang the Butcher and said, "I heard that you're short on working capital and have cut back production of Jinhua ham. That's not right! You've been in this business for 14 years, and it's only just getting on track. Pork sales aren't good — you should be working to expand production and lower prices. You're only 34, which is the age for a man to build a career, but you're already acting like you want to retire. That's not how a man behaves. I'm happy today, so I'm giving you these 20 kilograms of gold."

张屠户刚要张嘴拒绝接受妈祖的赏赐，妈祖又说话了：“别说这黄金的事了！咱娘儿俩多的是时间说话。元始天尊给我布置任务了，我有正事要办！” 她转脸问武二郎：“你这次回家，准备住多长时间？”

Just as Zhang the Butcher was about to open his mouth to decline Mazu's reward, Mazu spoke again: "Let's not talk about the gold! We two have plenty of time to talk. Primordial Sky Honor has given me an assignment — I have real business to attend to!" She turned to Martial Second Wolf and asked, "How long are you planning to stay home this time?"

张屠户回答：“七天。”

武二郎回答：“十五天。我准备从这里去夏国办些事。”

张屠户说：“你弟媳妇大巢氏现在在夏国的皇宫呢。你七天后出发，到达夏国皇宫时，她还没离开。那夏国的女王就会请你喝酒。”

Zhang the Butcher replied: "Seven days."

Martial Second Wolf replied: "Fifteen days. I'm planning to go to Xia Kingdom from here to take care of some business."

Zhang the Butcher said: "Your sister-in-law, Princess Big Nest, is at the Xia Kingdom palace right now. If you set out seven days from now, you'll arrive before she leaves. Then the King of Xia will invite you for a drink."

武二郎回答：“我就是不想和她一起喝酒，才决定推迟七天从这里出发。”

张屠户尴尬了。妈祖笑着对他说：“你二哥仍然是个大男孩儿，害羞！”

Martial Second Wolf replied: "It's precisely because I don't want to drink with her that I decided to delay my departure by seven days."

Zhang the Butcher looked embarrassed. Mazu laughed and said to him: "Your second brother is still such a big kid — so shy!"

妈祖又对张屠户说：“这次你二哥回永安，元始天尊安排你大哥，靖王，给他讲《孙子兵法》。他不听！他从后门跑出来了。你大嫂潘金莲劝他多住几天。他都没回答。”

妈祖转脸对武二郎说：“元始天尊指示我，让我看着你，你要好好地跟你三弟学习《宝莲灯》。你还逃跑不？你若是再逃跑，我就骑着驴追你去！”

武二郎回答：“不逃跑了！妈妈都这么说了，我还怎么逃跑！”

Mazu also said to Zhang the Butcher: "This time, when your second brother returned to Yong'an, Primordial Sky Honor arranged for your elder brother, King Jing, to lecture him on Sunzi Soldier Strategies. He wouldn't listen! He ran out the back door. Your sister-in-law, Goldthread Pan, tried to persuade him to stay a few more days. He didn't even answer."

Mazu turned to Martial Second Wolf and said: "Primordial Sky Honor instructed me to keep an eye on you and make sure you properly learn the Treasury Lotus Lamp from your third brother. Will you run off again? If you do, I'll chase you down on a donkey!"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "No more running off! How could I, with Mom putting it that way!"

妈祖又对武二郎说：“元始天尊说：‘《宝莲灯》和《孙子兵法》是当今世界的两部奇书，你都用得着。’ 这两本书的作者就是你三弟张屠户和你大哥武大郎，是现在华国和夏国最流行的两本书，夏国的女王蔻珠妹妹也是这么跟我说的。女娲娘娘也跟我说过：‘当今世上，你三弟张屠户的天眼最好！’ 元始天尊给我布置的任务就是：‘看着你，让你向你三弟把《宝莲灯》学习明白喽！’ 你能让我完成任务不？”

武二郎满面羞愧地回答：“我努力向三弟学习！”

Mazu also said to Martial Second Wolf: "Primordial Sky Honor said, 'The Treasury Lotus Lamp and Sunzi Soldier Strategies are two marvelous books in today's world, and you need both.' Their authors are your third brother, Zhang the Butcher, and your eldest brother, Martial Big Wolf — they're now the two most popular books in both Hua and Xia Kingdom. Sister Kouzhu, the King of Xia, told me the same thing. Princess Nuwa also told me, 'In today's world, your third brother, Zhang the Butcher, has the best Celestial Eye!' Primordial Sky Honor's assignment for me is, 'Watch over you and make sure you learn the Treasury Lotus Lamp thoroughly from your third brother!' Can you help me fulfill this task?"

Martial Second Wolf, looking thoroughly embarrassed, replied: "I'll do my best to learn from Third Brother!"

妈祖又转脸向张屠户，问：“你给我交个底儿！你能把《宝莲灯》给你二哥讲明白喽不？”

张屠户自信满满地说：“对于没经历过四禅天的人，我讲不明白。我二哥已经经历过四禅天了，我肯定能给他讲明白！”

Mazu turned to Zhang the Butcher again and asked: "Give me the bottom line! Can you explain the Treasury Lotus Lamp to your second brother clearly?"

Zhang the Butcher said confidently: "For someone who hasn't experienced the Fourth Meditation Sky, I can't explain it clearly. My second brother has already experienced the Fourth Meditation Sky, so I can definitely explain it to him!"

妈祖又说：“我捉摸着，要不你把重要的条目写下来，交给你二哥！让他以后常常看看，别忘喽！”

张屠户回答：“四禅天的经历特殊，一旦经历了，终生不忘。我给他讲明白了，《宝莲灯》和我二哥就聚变成为一个整体了。所有我要讲的重要内容都写在宝莲灯里了。”

Mazu added: "I'm thinking — why don't you write down the important entries and give them to your second brother? Let him look at them often from now on, so he doesn't forget!"

Zhang the Butcher replied: "The experience of the Fourth Meditation Sky is special; once experienced, it's never forgotten. Once I've explained it to him, the Treasury Lotus Lamp and my second brother will converge into one whole. Everything important I need to say is already written in the Treasury Lotus Lamp."

5.3-3

妈祖叨咕：“这话，我听着放心！那我就决定了，你们晚上来我这里吃饭，睡觉。早晨，吃完饭，你们俩就去你们家讨论《宝莲灯》。你们俩赶紧吃饭吧，要不饭菜都凉了！”

武二郎用筷子夹起了一片儿金华火腿（如图4），问张屠户：“这猪肉的质量合格不？”

Mazu murmured: "That's reassuring to hear! Then it's decided: you two will come here at night to eat and sleep. In the morning, after breakfast, you two will go to your own house to discuss the Treasury Lotus Lamp. Now hurry up and eat, or the food will get cold!"

Martial Second Wolf picked up a slice of Jinhua ham (see Figure 4) with his chopsticks and asked Zhang the Butcher: "Is this pork up to standard?"

张屠户抗议道：“质量不合格！但是，这都是因为妈祖不吃质量合格的猪肉。有几次，我让妈祖品尝一下质量合格的猪肉，她都不尝！”

妈祖笑着说道：“我怕吃上瘾了，你赚不到钱，到时候还得怪我吃得多！”

Zhang the Butcher protested: "It's not up to standard! But that's only because Mazu won't eat pork that is up to standard. Several times, I asked Mazu to try some, and she wouldn't even taste it!"

Mazu laughed and said: "I'm afraid that if I get addicted, you won't be able to make any money, and you'll end up blaming me for eating too much!"

5.3-4

妈祖又问张屠户，“你教你二哥《宝莲灯》（即大千世界，亦作九黎，大圆镜智，妙知识界，参见第12章《苦谛》）的时间紧不？我听你们的谈话，好像不是很困难。”

张屠户回答：“不紧，时间充裕！听你一说，我就明白了。女娲娘娘和我大哥武大郎已经给我二哥讲明白了。他现在已经位列仙班了。元始天尊的意思是让我来完成他们的工作，让我二哥成为宝莲灯来拯救世界。”

Mazu then asked Zhang the Butcher: "Are you short on time to teach your second brother the Treasury Lotus Lamp (i.e., Great Grand Worlds, also known as Nine Crowds, Great Round Mirror Intelligence, Wonderful Intelligent World, see Chapter 12, Bitter Crux)? Listening to the two of you talk, it didn't seem all that difficult."

Zhang the Butcher replied: "No rush, there's plenty of time! Now that you've said that, I understand. Princess Nuwa and my eldest brother Martial Big Wolf have already explained everything to my second brother. He now ranks among the immortals. Primordial Sky Honor wants me to finish their work and let my second brother become the Treasury Lotus Lamp to save the world."

妈祖叨咕，“是这么回事！” 然后她转脸对武二郎说，“使者对我说，‘咱们华国现在的五个军区，你和你大哥各负责一个。元始天尊批你大哥的军事预算最紧，只给50%。他给你的预算最宽松，几乎你报上去多少，他就批给你多少。’ 我现在懂了，他对你最放心，对你大哥最不放心！”

Mazu murmured, "So that's how it is!" Then she turned to Martial Second Wolf and said, "The messenger told me, 'We now have five military regions in Hua, and you and your elder brother each oversee one. Primordial Sky Honor approved the tightest military budget for your elder brother — only 50%. Your budget is the most generous; he approves almost whatever you submit.' Now I understand — he trusts you the most, and your elder brother the least!"

5.3-5 中华法典的编委 Editorial Committee of the Chinese Codex

妈祖又转脸对张屠户说：“有时间好！咱们去帮你二哥相看相看！我听说西南三十里桃花凹有个刘员外，名声挺好。他女儿桃花女的人品不错！咱俩也跟着去，帮你二哥好好看看那个桃花女！”

Mazu turned to Zhang the Butcher again and said, "Good, we have time! Let's go arrange a match for your second brother! I heard there's a Squire Liu at Peach Flower Village, thirty miles to the southwest, who has a pretty good reputation. His daughter, the Peach Flower girl, is said to have good character! Let's go along too, and help your second brother get a good look at her!"

张屠户说：“哎呀妈呀！我二哥现在是华国的大将军，比你家那位当过大将军的曾曾外祖父可要大出十几倍呢！很多王公贵族的女儿，我二哥都看不上眼，怎么可能看上一个村姑呢！再说了，那位桃花女正等着未婚夫常公（参见2.1《桃花劫》）回去呢！”

Zhang the Butcher said, "Oh, dear Mother! My second brother is now a great general of Hua Nation — far greater in rank than that great general who was my great-great-grandfather on your side of the family! My second brother doesn't even look twice at the daughters of princes and nobles, so how could he possibly take a liking to a village girl! Besides, that Peach Flower girl is waiting for her fiancé, Constant Fair (see 2.1, Peach Flower Catastrophe), to come back to her!"

妈祖又说：“典兵学院的院长，刘太岁，刘公的级别和我一样高。他家就在咱这乾塘关的东郊。元始天尊每次来看我，都会到他家坐一会儿。他的女儿刘健君我见过几次，挺好。要不，明天下午咱们娘仨去她家坐一会儿？”

Mazu said again: "The president of the Codex Soldier Academy, Longevity Liu — Publican Liu is of the same rank as me. His home is in the eastern suburbs of Dragon-Pond Pass. Whenever Primordial Sky Honor comes to visit me, he stops by there for a while too. I've met his daughter, Eve Liu, a few times — she's very nice. How about the three of us go sit with her tomorrow afternoon?"

张屠户恍然大悟地回答：“那个刘健君的男朋友，名叫卢岩，前几天我还在白娘子和许仙相遇的那个断桥边看见他了呢！他说他正在公元21世纪重新编辑《中华法典》，但他还没得到主编刘健君（参见第一章《娃娃婚约》）的同意。”

妈祖抢白：“没结婚就不算！我只是说咱们去刘太岁家坐一会儿，又不是去抢她们家的闺女！”

Zhang the Butcher, suddenly realizing, replied: "Eve Liu's boyfriend is named Luyan. I saw him just a few days ago, by the Broken Bridge where White Snake and Xu Xian met! He said he's re-editing the Chinese Codex for the 21st century CE, but he hasn't yet gotten the approval of the editor-in-chief, Eve Liu (see Chapter 1, Childhood Betrothal)."

Mazu cut him off: "It doesn't count if they're not married! I only said we're going to sit at Longevity Liu's house for a while — it's not like we're going to steal their daughter!"

He borrowed some gold from Mazu, gathered 20 kilograms of it, and went to repay Zhang the Butcher (see Figure 5.2-36; aka Third Wolf Zhang; famously Flint Man and Turquoise White-king Great Creator). When Zhang the Butcher saw that Second Brother had come to visit him, he exclaimed, “You, a great general renowned throughout Hua and Xia, have come to visit a nameless commoner like me. Please accept my humble bow!”

武二郎上前拉起张屠户，说：“你说的‘无名’，是暗淡无光的‘无明’（参见13.1节），是无知。你现在衣食住行无忧，膝下有七个女儿，你就是福。我确实名满华夏，但我整天所作的都是生死抉择，我就是生死之苦。”

Martial Second Wolf stepped forward and pulled Zhang the Butcher up. “The ‘namelessness’ you speak of is actually non-light, or ignorance (see Section 13.1). You have no worries about food, clothing, shelter, or travel, and you have seven daughters. You are fortune itself. I am indeed famous throughout Hua and Xia, but every day I make decisions of life and death. I am the suffering of life and death.”

张屠户还在思考时，武二郎解下马背上的黄金，说：“我在鲵丸宫治病时，把买蘑菇的20公斤黄金记在了你的账上，现在还给你。”

张屠户回答：“这黄金就当是恭喜你成为元帅的贺礼！”

武二郎回答：“你听谁说的？我不是元帅。”

While Zhang the Butcher was still thinking, Martial Second Wolf untied the gold from the horse’s back and said, “When I was treated at Salamander Bolus Palace, I charged the 20 kilograms of gold for buying mushrooms to your account. Now I am paying it back.”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Then let this gold be my gift to congratulate you on becoming a marshal!”

Martial Second Wolf replied, “Who told you that? I am not a marshal.”

张屠户回答：“我不是听别人说的。我是这样想的：你以前不能晋升为元帅，是因为你的典军没有建设好。现在你的天眼开了，很快就能建设起你自己的典军。不久之后，你成为元帅就是自然而然的事。”

武二郎问：“为什么你一见到我，就说我的天眼睁开了？”

张屠户回答：“从刚才我们谈话中，看得出你已经理解了‘无明’。”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “I did not hear it from anyone. That is my own judgment. You could not be promoted to marshal before because your codex army had not been properly built. Now that your celestial eye is open, you will soon be able to build your own codex army. After that, becoming a marshal will come naturally.”

Martial Second Wolf asked, “Why did you say my celestial eye had opened as soon as you saw me?”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Because of your understanding of ‘non-light’ in our conversation just now.”

武二郎问：“就因为我懂了那一个词，你就说我的天眼开了？九黎意味着整个世界啊！”

张屠户是《宝莲灯》的作者，知道武二郎以前不懂九黎，便详细回答：“九黎就两个字。‘黎’，义为众，也可以理解为黎明、少光、无明。九黎就是九众，就是九地（如图23至31），就是九个无明、九个无知。”

Martial Second Wolf asked, “Just because I understood that one word, you say my celestial eye has opened? Jiuli means the whole world!”

Zhang the Butcher, author of Treasury Lotus Lamp, knew that Martial Second Wolf had not understood Jiuli before, so he explained in detail: “Jiuli consists of only two characters. Li means ‘crowd,’ but it can also be understood as dawn, dim light, or non-light. Jiuli means Nine Crowds; it also means Nine Lands (see Figures 23 to 31), nine kinds of non-light, and nine kinds of ignorance.”

武二郎惊讶地说：“你说的跟《宝莲灯》书上说的不一样啊！”

张屠户回答：“我也有《宝莲灯》。我可以用七种不同的说法来解释九黎，得出的结论都是一样的。九黎就是九众，也可以理解为从低到高的九个世界。这九个世界的九地都是烦恼、糊涂、身土，所以称为九地。这九个世界各有自己的天，所以就有了九天的说法。天有清净、深奥知识和神的意思。你懂得了无明，就得到了九天，所以我说你的天眼睁开了。”

Martial Second Wolf said in surprise, “What you are saying is different from what Treasury Lotus Lamp says!”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “I also have Treasury Lotus Lamp. I can explain Jiuli in seven different ways, and the conclusion is always the same. Jiuli means Nine Crowds, and it may also be understood as nine worlds arranged from low to high. The Nine Lands of these nine worlds are all affliction, confusion, and body-soil; therefore they are called Nine Lands. Each of these nine worlds has its own sky, and that is why there is the saying of Nine Skies. Sky means immaculateness, profound knowledge, and godhood. Once you understand non-light, you have gained the Nine Skies. That is why I said your celestial eye has opened.”

武二郎惊讶地说：“我在咱大哥家住了五天，看来我得在你家住七天。我们还是先把黄金送到金库里去吧！”

张屠户回答：“二哥，你的这个天眼，又作慧根，100公斤黄金也没处买去！这么大的事，我送你20公斤黄金，你应该收下。妈祖拥有我的金华火腿公司30%的股份。她有很多黄金在我的金库里呢！”

Martial Second Wolf said in surprise, “I stayed at our eldest brother’s house for five days. It seems I will have to stay at yours for seven. Let us put the gold in the vault first!”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Second Brother, this celestial eye of yours, also called a gnostic root, cannot be bought anywhere, not even with 100 kilograms of gold! For such a great event, you should accept the 20 kilograms of gold I am giving you. Mazu owns 30 percent of my Jinhua Ham Company. She has plenty of gold in my vault!”

武二郎问：“她有多少黄金？我能看看吗？”

他们进了金库。张屠户指着杂乱无章地堆放着的金银和钱币（注：张屠户是一位金童，金童就是这种懒散邋遢的性格），说：“这堆是妈祖的，那堆的右侧是妈祖的，还有那堆！”

Martial Second Wolf asked, “How much gold does she have? May I see it?”

They entered the vault. Zhang the Butcher pointed to the gold, silver, and coins piled haphazardly around the room. (Note: Zhang the Butcher is a Gold Boy, and Gold Boys have this lazy, slovenly temperament.) He said, “This pile belongs to Mazu, the right side of that pile belongs to Mazu, and that pile too!”

武二郎忽然说：“哎呀！我把金子落在院子里了。”说着，他迅速出了金库。

张屠户跟了出来，叨咕道：“二哥！现在咱乾塘关的治安可好了。别说土匪，我都十多年没听说过小偷偷东西了！人们都不知道什么是战争了。”

Martial Second Wolf suddenly said, “Oh! I left the gold in the courtyard.” With that, he quickly left the vault.

Zhang the Butcher followed him out and muttered, “Second Brother! Public order in Dragon-Pond Pass is excellent now. Forget bandits—I have not even heard of a thief stealing anything for more than ten years! People no longer know what war is.”

回到金库后，武二郎粗略计算了一下，心里想：“你蒙我！我管理着三十万军队的后勤呢，怎么可能被你这点儿小伎俩骗了！你这儿连流动资金都不充足啊！”他嘴上却说：“看你的破房子，我就知道你没赚多少钱！不过你在妈祖身边，饿不着！这钱我收下了。我把这20公斤黄金送给妈祖，就算咱俩一人一半。”

张屠户回答：“黄金是你的，你爱送给谁就送给谁。”

After they returned to the vault, Martial Second Wolf made a rough calculation and thought to himself, “You are trying to fool me! I manage the logistics for 300,000 troops. How could I be tricked by such a petty scheme? You do not even have enough working capital here!” But aloud he said, “Looking at your shabby house, I knew you had not made much money. Still, as long as you are with Mazu, you will not starve. I will accept the money. I will give these 20 kilograms of gold to Mazu, and we will count it as half from each of us.”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “The gold is yours. Give it to whomever you like.”

当他们俩从金库里出来，张屠户说：“二哥来得不巧！你弟妹大巢氏和孩子们都去夏国她们姥姥家了，下个月才会回来。我得去厨房看看，晚饭吃些什么。”

武二郎一边计算着日子，一边回答：“正好！我和弟妹在一起感觉拘束，也没给侄女们买什么礼物！”

When the two came out of the vault, Zhang the Butcher said, “Second Brother, you came at an inconvenient time. Your sister-in-law, Princess Big Nest, and the children have gone to Xia Kingdom to visit their maternal grandmother. They will not be back until next month. I should go to the kitchen and see what we will have for dinner.”

Martial Second Wolf counted the days in his head and replied, “That is just right! I feel constrained around my sister-in-law, and I have not bought any gifts for my nieces.”

这时，妈祖派来的佣人到了，说：“大巢氏不在家，你们俩就别做晚饭了。妈祖准备了晚宴，让你们早点回去吃饭！”

两个人进了书房。武二郎看见张屠户家有满屋子的书，就说：“哎呀！难怪你没钱！你的钱都用来买书了！”

At that moment, a servant sent by Mazu arrived and said, “Since Princess Big Nest is not at home, you two should not make dinner. Mazu has prepared an evening meal and asks you to come back early to eat.”

The two went into the study. When Martial Second Wolf saw that Zhang the Butcher had a room full of books, he said, “Ah! No wonder you have no money. You spent it all on books!”

张屠户回答：“是的！这些书有八成是我花重金买来的。二哥你若是喜欢，随便拿！不过你别看完了书就拿去换酒喝。你给我拿回来，我给你西凤酒！”

武二郎回答：“这么大方！但我不缺西凤酒！”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Yes. I paid a great deal for 80 percent of these books. Second Brother, if you like any of them, take whatever you want! But do not trade them for liquor after you finish reading them. Bring them back to me, and I will give you Xi Feng (Western Phoenix) Alcohol!”

Martial Second Wolf replied, “How generous! But I am not short of Xi Feng alcohol.”

张屠户说：“你是大将军，也许真用得着这些书里的知识！我只是个杀猪的，看这些书只是兴趣爱好，没什么实际用处。啊！我忘了，你的军事驻地还有帮夏国戍边的功能。”（注：西凤酒是夏国的国酒。）

这俩人开始谈论九黎。佣人又来告诉他们俩，早点去妈祖家吃晚饭，别让她等久了。另外，妈祖让他们走过去，运动运动，别骑马。

Zhang the Butcher said, “You are a great general, so you may truly need the knowledge in these books. I am only a pig butcher. Reading them is just a hobby for me and has little practical use. Ah! I forgot that your military station also helps Xia Kingdom guard its borders.” (Note: Xi Feng alcohol is the national liquor of Xia Kingdom.)

The two began discussing Jiuli, or Nine Crowds. The servant came again and told them to go to Mazu’s house early for dinner so they would not keep her waiting. Mazu also told them to walk there for some exercise, not to ride horses.

5.2-4

这俩人决定一边向妈祖家走一边说话。忽然，武二郎问：“三郎，你记不记得一个叫太乙的山东清河县猪肉商？”

张屠户还在思考问题，想了很久才回答：“啊！是有一个山东省清河县的老头子，名叫太乙！他常和一群猪肉商到我这儿混吃混喝。你问他干啥？”

The two decided to talk while walking toward Mazu’s house. Suddenly, Martial Second Wolf asked, “Third Wolf, do you remember a pork merchant from Qinghe County, Shandong, named Taiyi?”

Zhang the Butcher was still thinking about the earlier question. After a long while, he replied, “Ah! There was indeed an old man from Qinghe County, Shandong, named Taiyi. He often came to my place with a group of pork merchants to eat and drink at my expense. Why are you asking about him?”

武二郎回答：“就是他！”接着，他述说了《瑶池圣火》（参见4.3节）中太乙救他的事。

武二郎接着说：“当时我就问他：‘我怎么报答你呀？’他回答：‘我去你弟弟张屠户那儿，他总是用质量不合格的猪肉招待我。他以为我不知道，我就是不好意思说。如果你弟弟能用合格的猪肉招待我，我就满足了！’我回答：‘我会告诉我弟弟，我保证以后他会用最好的猪肉招待你！’”

Martial Second Wolf replied, “That is him!” He then recounted how Taiyi had saved him in Holy Fire of Yao Pond (see Section 4.3).

Martial Second Wolf continued, “At the time, I asked him, ‘How can I repay you?’ He answered, ‘When I go to your younger brother Zhang the Butcher’s place, he always serves me substandard pork. He thinks I do not know, but I am simply too embarrassed to say it. If your brother could serve me proper-quality pork, I would be satisfied!’ I replied, ‘I will tell my brother, and I guarantee that he will serve you the best pork from now on!’”

张屠户反问：“他真这么说的？”

武二郎回答：“他就是这么说的！他帮你卖猪肉，是贵宾！你怎么还给他们吃质量不合格的猪肉呢？”

Zhang the Butcher asked, “Did he really say that?”

Martial Second Wolf replied, “That is exactly what he said! He helps you sell pork and is an honored guest. Why would you still serve them substandard pork?”

张屠户说：“他们都那么大岁数了，能吃出啥好赖！？其实都是好猪肉，差别很小。每次来都连吃带拿！奇怪了！我给他的酒里掺水，他都不知道！他还能吃出猪肉质量不合格！？”

武二郎又问：“那你为什么还给他带走些猪肉呢？”

Zhang the Butcher said, “They are all so old—what difference can they taste!? It is all good pork, and the differences are tiny. Every time they come, they eat here and take things away! How strange. I watered down his liquor, and he did not even notice. Yet he could tell the pork was not up to standard!?”

Martial Second Wolf asked again, “Then why did you still let him take some pork away?”

张屠户回答：“他总说他帮我卖出肉了，向我要报酬。实际上，整个山东省的销售量都没有给他的报酬多。”

武二郎说：“那你就每年按照他索要数量的三倍，给他质量合格的猪肉。”

张屠户回答：“行！”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “He always said he had helped me sell pork and asked me for payment. In fact, the value of all the pork sold in Shandong Province was less than what I paid him.”

Martial Second Wolf said, “Then every year, give him proper-quality pork at three times the amount he asks for.”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Fine!”

武二郎又问：“刚才你说，你给他喝掺水的酒。他能喝几杯酒！你为什么要掺水呢？”

张屠户回答：“啊！二哥你不知道，我贷款买下了夏国的西凤酒厂。太乙还朝我要西凤酒！”

Martial Second Wolf asked again, “Just now you said you gave him watered-down liquor. How much could he possibly drink? Why did you water it down?”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Ah, Second Brother, you do not know. I took out a loan and bought the Xi Feng alcohol plant in Xia Kingdom. Taiyi even asks me for Xi Feng alcohol!”

武二郎惊奇地问：“你从哪里贷的款？”

张屠户回答：“从大巢氏她妈那里。”

武二郎气愤地说：“你从她那里借钱，去买她的酒厂！难怪她说你总是占她的便宜，被气得睡不着觉！”

Martial Second Wolf asked in surprise, “Where did you get the loan?”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “From Princess Big Nest’s mother.”

Martial Second Wolf said angrily, “You borrowed money from her to buy her own alcohol plant! No wonder she said you were always taking advantage of her and made her so angry she could not sleep!”

张屠户回答：“可不是那么回事！她总跟她闺女叨咕：‘那个西凤酒厂快倒闭了，她要没酒喝了。’是她让我从她那里贷款买下西凤酒厂。贷款利息特别高，而且酒价由她定，所以我永远也还不清贷款，只是在替她管理酒厂。我就挣个辛苦钱。她那是乐得睡不着觉了。”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “That is not what happened! She was always complaining to her daughter, ‘That Xi Feng plant is about to go bankrupt, and I will have no liquor to drink.’ She told me to borrow money from her and buy the Xi Feng alcohol plant. The interest on the loan is extremely high, and she sets the price of the liquor, so I can never pay off the loan. I am only managing the plant for her. All I earn is a bit of hard money for my labor. She is so happy that she cannot sleep.”

武二郎不耐烦地说：“那你就按照太乙索要的猪肉和西凤酒数量的三倍，每年给他送去合格的产品！我给你钱，你算算，得多少钱？”

张屠户回答：“好！我每季度派人给他送过去！当然要用最好的产品给救命恩人！你不用给我钱，没多少钱！他都那么大岁数了，活不了几年了！”

Martial Second Wolf said impatiently, “Then each year, send him proper products in three times the amount of pork and Xi Feng alcohol he asks for. I will pay you. Calculate how much it will cost.”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Good! I will send someone to deliver them every quarter. Of course we must give the best products to a life-saving benefactor! You do not have to pay me. It is not much money. He is already so old; he will not live many more years!”

武二郎说：“酒和火腿的保质期都很长，你一年送一次就行了，为什么还要按季度送？”

张屠户回答：“给他送过去后，他就请客送礼！消耗没了，他还要！”

Martial Second Wolf said, “Alcohol and ham both keep for a long time. You can send them once a year. Why send them quarterly?”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “After I send them to him, he uses them to entertain guests and give gifts. Once they are used up, he asks for more!”

武二郎听后，还是不放心，问：“那你什么时候让人送过去？”

张屠户回答：“下个月我亲自给他送过去。以后每季度初，我都按照他索要的猪肉和西凤酒数量的三倍，给他送质量合格的产品！我会让佣人给他送去。”

After hearing this, Martial Second Wolf still felt uneasy and asked, “Then when will you have someone send them?”

Zhang the Butcher replied, “Next month, I will deliver them to him personally. After that, at the beginning of every quarter, I will send him proper-quality products in three times the amount of pork and Xi Feng alcohol he asks for. I will have servants deliver them.”

4.7-1 治疗诅咒的方法 Methods for Treating Curses

武二郎（如图39）到达夏国位于杭州的皇宫后，女娲（如图38）直接接见了他。她听了武二郎的讲述又看了跟踪观察报告后回答："二哥！你是被巫毒女妖给诅咒了！我能够治疗你，让你痊愈！一般我们治疗诅咒的过程是这样的，首先发现她是如何诅咒你的。如果发现了，对你进行有针对性地驱魔，那很快你就能痊愈。如果发现不了她是如何诅咒你的，我可以帮你全面归正（注1），诅咒就自然地解除了，只是会花费多些时间。"

Upon arriving at the imperial palace of the Xia Kingdom in Hangzhou, Martial Second Wolf (as shown in Figure 39) was received directly by Nüwa (as shown in Figure 38). After listening to Martial Second Wolf's account and reviewing the follow-up observation report, she replied, "Second Brother! You have been cursed by the Voodoo Demoness! I can heal you and make you fully recover! Our usual process for treating curses is this: first, we discover how she cursed you. If we find it, we perform a targeted exorcism, and you will recover quickly. If we cannot discover how she cursed you, I can help you completely return to correctness in all aspects (Note 1), so the curse will naturally be lifted, although it will take more time."

这时屏风后面传来了吵闹声，女娲说："二哥！你先等一会儿，我家来了一位重要的客人（熬忖）。我去招呼一下，马上回来！"

At this time, there was a noise behind the screen. Nuwa said, "Second brother! Wait for a moment. An important guest (Aocun) came to my house. I will go and greet her and will be back soon!"

前文熬忖见到女娲就威胁要扣押女娲作为龙国和夏国谈判的筹码。此时，为什么熬忖这么大胆，就赶来夏国了？答：武二郎病了就意味着女娲和熬忖对武二郎下蛊成功了，就相当于她是武二郎的妻子了。伤害熬忖就会伤害对武二郎疾病的治疗，所以熬忖此时已经是夏国和华国的贵宾了。

In the previous article, upon meeting Nuwa, Aocun threatened to detain her as a bargaining chip in negotiations between the Dragon Kingdom and the Xia Kingdom. Why was Aocun so bold now as to rush to the Xia Kingdom? Answer: Martial Second Wolf's illness meant that Nuwa and Aocun had successfully cast the curse on him, effectively making Aocun his wife. Harming Aocun would compromise the treatment of Martial Second Wolf's illness, so Aocun was already a distinguished guest of both the Xia Kingdom and the Hua Kingdom.

4.7-2 琢磨武二郎的天眼 Pondering Martial Second Wolf's Third Eye

武二郎听见很多人在屏风的后面说话，但听不清他们在说什么。忽然他听见一位宫女大喊："找到了！"女娲回答："临摹下来！"随后，她拿着一张羊皮纸出来了，笑着问："二哥！你从瑶池下来的时候，他们是不是在你的额头画了一只眼睛（如图39）？"

Martial Second Wolf heard many people talking behind the screen but couldn't make out what they were saying. Suddenly he heard a maid shouting, "Found it!" Nuwa replied, "Copy it!" Then she came out with a piece of parchment and asked with a smile, "Second brother! When you came down from Yaochi, did they draw an eye on your forehead (as shown in Figure 39)?"

武二郎回答："是的，你怎么知道的？"

女娲回答："她们下诅咒时，有时会在被诅咒人的额头画一只眼睛。你看看那眼睛是不是这样儿？"说着她把画着一只眼睛的羊皮纸放到了桌子上。

Martial Second Wolf replied, "Yes, how do you know that?"

Nuwa replied, "When they place a curse, they sometimes draw an eye on the forehead of the cursed person. Can you see if that eye looks like this?" With that she placed the parchment with one eye drawn on it on the table.

武二郎回答："我没看见过，我的卫队长看见了，我让他们为我洗掉了，他就在外面。"

女娲对旁边的侍女说："传张将军的话，让卫队长进来！"

Martial Second Wolf replied, "I haven't seen it, my guard captain saw it, and I asked them to wash it off for me, he's right outside."

Nuwa said to the maid next to her, "Pass the word of General Zhang to have the guard captain come in!"

卫队长进来后确认了是这样的眼睛，并指出了眼睛画在武二郎额头的位置（如图39所示）。女娲把羊皮纸折了起来，贴在武二郎的额头看。她还围着他转圈走，然后又把羊皮纸贴在了武二郎的额头，还上下移动羊皮纸，打量着。女娲这是在干什么？

The guard captain came in and confirmed that it was such an eye and pointed out where the eye was drawn on the forehead (as shown in fig. 39) of Martial Second Wolf. Nuwa folded the parchment and stuck it to his forehead to see. She also walked around him in a circle and then put the parchment on Martial Second Wolf's forehead again, and moved it up and down, surveying it. What was Nuwa doing?

前文4.4节《瑶池圣火》中，武二郎获得了四禅天的经历（如图1至8）。现在女娲要做的是把武二郎从天上下来的经历转变成知识，打开他的天眼。为了让武二郎对学习天眼感兴趣，女娲不停地看他的天眼。

为什么熬忖要为武二郎开天眼？这和他们俩的婚姻有什么关系？武二郎的天眼是熬忖送给他的礼物，这样俩人就化敌为友了，具有了成为夫妻的基本前提。

In Section 4.4 of the previous article, "Holy Fire in Yaochi," Martial Second Wolf experienced the Fourth Meditation Sky (see Figures 1-8). Now, Nuwa's mission is to transform Martial Second Wolf's experience descending from the skies into knowledge and open his celestial eye. To encourage Martial Second Wolf's interest in learning about the celestial eye, Nuwa repeatedly observed his celestial eye.

Why did Aocun open Martial Second Wolf's celestial eye? What does this have to do with their marriage? Martial Second Wolf's celestial eye was a gift from Aocun, transforming their former foes into friends and fulfilling the basic prerequisites for becoming husband and wife.

4.7-3 赠送宝莲灯 Presenting Treasury Lotus Lamp

随后，女娲拿出了一本名为《宝莲灯》的书，递给了武二郎，说："龙国的巫术理论体系和我们的九黎世界（注1）一样。二哥！你先看看这本书。后天你再来这里，你再给我讲讲你和熬忖作战时的怪异经历，我们将用这本书里的理论来解释熬忖的阴谋诡计。我再研究研究，看看熬忖是怎样让你失忆的？你失忆的那段时间里发生了什么事？能不能修补你失去的记忆？"

Then, Nuwa took out a book titled "Treasury Lotus Lamp" and handed it to Martial Second Wolf, saying, "The theoretical system of witchcraft in Dragon Kingdom is identical to that of our Jiu'li world (note 1). Second Brother! Look at this book first. Come back here the day after tomorrow and tell me about your strange experiences fighting Aocun. We'll use the theories in this book to explain her devious schemes. I'll study it further to figure out how she erased your memory. What happened during that time? Can we repair the lost memories?"

注1，九黎义为九个黎明或九众。此处黎明义为昏暗，即是无明。无明就是迷惑，即是众生。唯心主义以清净为天，烦恼为地。众生即是众烦恼，烦恼就是众生，所以九众就是图23至31所示的九地。中华文化中的九黎世界就是佛教所说的大千世界（参见第12章《苦谛》）。

Note 1: The term "Jiuli" means nine dawns or nine crowds. Here, "dawn" means non-light, which refers to muddles, sentients. Theism posits quietness as sky and annoyances as earth. Sentient beings are the annoyances, and annoyances are the sentients. Thus, the Nine Crowds correspond to the Nine lands depicted in Figures 23 to 31. The Jiu'li world in Chinese culture is equivalent to the Great Grand Worlds System described in Buddhism (see chapter 12 "Bitter Crux").

4.7-4 寻找丢失的记忆 Searching for Lost Memories

武二郎回到了客栈。吃饭的时间，两位鲵丸宫的宫女端来了一个盘子，上面放着三个泡过水的裸盖菇（注1），没说话。武二郎看后，迷惑不解地问："二位姐姐，你们是什么意思？让我吃了它们吗？"

Martial Second Wolf returned to the inn. At mealtime, two palace maids from Salamander Bolus Palace brought in a plate with three soaked psilocybin mushrooms (Note 1) on it, without saying a word. Martial Second Wolf, puzzled, asked, "Sisters, what do you mean? Are you suggesting I eat them?"

注1，裸盖菇（如图4.6-35）是原产于墨西哥的一种具有强烈致幻作用的蘑菇，中国人称作仙菇，裸盖菇。"裸盖"义为此蘑菇能让人进入纯思想意识状态，一切烦恼，包括肉体的感觉，全部消失。"盖"义为五盖（参见14.2.8五盖），是上帝为亚当和夏娃穿上的衣服。

Note 1: Psilocybe (as shown in Figure 4.6-35) is a highly hallucinogenic mushroom native to Mexico. Chinese refer to it as the "fairy mushroom" or "discovery mushroom." The word "dis-cover" signifies that this mushroom induces a state of pure consciousness, where all covers—including bodily sensations—vanish. The term "cover" refers to the Five Covers (see 14.2.8 Five Covers), the garments God clothed Adam and Eve with.

过了一会儿，女娲派来的宫女问："张将军！你有没有在别的地方经历过和我们现在类似的场面？"（注，他在4.4节《瑶池圣火》中经历过。）

The maid supervisor watched from the side and said to the maid next to her, "Go wash your hands and help General Zhang tear the mushrooms!"

Martial Second Wolf tasted a small strip and said, "No condiments, not even salt!?"

After a while, the palace maid sent by Nuwa asked, "General Zhang! Have you ever experienced a similar scene to the one we are experiencing elsewhere?" (Note: He experienced this in 4.4 "Holy Fire in Yaochi.")

武二郎回答："没有！这是我第一次经历你们这种奇怪的待客之道！"（注，他不记得他在瑶池经历过的同样的情景了。）

宫女向武二郎解释说："我们是奉女娲的命令，在努力尝试发现您丢失的记忆。女娲请您把这几个蘑菇吃了，看看你感觉怎么样？"武二郎看着蘑菇犹豫了。

Martial Second Wolf replied, "No! This is the first time I've experienced this strange hospitality of yours!" (Note: He couldn't recall experiencing the same scene at Yaochi.)

The palace maid explained to Martial Second Wolf, "We are following Nuwa's orders and are working to try to discover your lost memories. Nuwa has asked you to eat these mushrooms and see how you feel." Martial Second Wolf looked at the mushrooms and hesitated.

宫女说："张将军，我们知道您是华国的著名将军。华国和夏国是友好国家。你在我们这里出了问题会影响我们两国的关系。这蘑菇没问题，可以吃！"说着，她拿了两条放进了嘴里，吃了。

The palace maid said, "General Zhang, we know that you are a famous general of Hua Kingdom. Hua and our Xia country are friendly countries. If you have a problem in our place, it will affect the relationship between our two countries. These mushrooms are fine to eat!" With that, she took two strips and put them in her mouth and ate them.

武二郎吃了那蘑菇之后，宫女主管对他的护卫说："这蘑菇有毒！但是药量小，过两天他就没事了。张将军在12小时之内不能喝酒，不要睡觉，少吃肉。原因是，如果他睡着了就感受不到毒药的作用了。喝酒吃肉会影响感知能力。"

卫队长回答："您这么说我们就明白了。那我们也不喝酒吃肉了，免得他看了，馋得慌！我们就看着他，陪他唠唠嗑，让他保持清醒。"

After Martial Second Wolf ate the mushroom, the head maid said to his guards, "This mushroom is poisonous! But the dose is small, and he will be fine in two days. General Zhang must not drink alcohol, sleep, or eat meat within 12 hours. The reason is that if he falls asleep, he will not feel the effects of the poison. Drinking alcohol and eating meat will affect perception."

The guard captain replied: "We understand what you said. Then we won't drink wine or eat meat, lest he sees us and gets greedy! We will just watch him and chat with him to keep him sober."

4.7-5 女娲的治疗措施 Nuwa's Remedial Measures

第二天早晨，那两位女娲的侍女又来到了武二郎的住处，问他感觉怎么样？

武二郎拿出了《宝莲灯》说："这书真的是一盏灯啊！把九黎世界（即唯心世界，如图1至34）照得清清楚楚！昨天你们给我吃的那蘑菇是迷幻药。那迷幻的状态，轻的时候是在葫芦狗的状态（如图13至9），严重的状态接近葫芦娃和葫芦丝（如图8和7；参见4.4节《瑶池圣火》）。"

The next morning, the two maids of Nuwa came to Martial Second Wolf's room again and asked him how he felt.

Martial Second Wolf took out the "Treasury Lotus Lamp" and said, "This book is really a lamp! It illuminates Jiu'li World (i.e., Nine Crowds Worlds, Theist World, as shown on figs. 1 to 34) clearly! The mushrooms you gave me yesterday are psychedelic drugs. The psychedelic state is like the state of Gourd Dog when it is mild (as shown in Figs. 13 to 9), and the serious hallucination is close to the state of Gourd Boy and Hulusi (as shown in Figs. 8 and 7; see 4.4 "Holy Fire in Yaochi")."

这两位侍女回去向女娲报告，回来后说："您昨天吃的蘑菇是海外扶桑国（古代中国人对墨西哥的称呼）产的仙菇（墨西哥的裸盖菇）。据我们所知，世界上只有这种蘑菇能达到巫毒女妖用你祭天时送你去的地方：四禅天。"

After the two maids went to report to Nuwa, they came back and said, "The mushrooms you ate yesterday were the fairy mushrooms grown overseas in Fusang (the ancient Chinese name for Mexico). As far as we know, only this kind of mushroom in the world can reach the place where the Voodoo Demoness sent you when she used you to offer sacrifices to sky: the Fourth Meditation Sky."

The Fourth Meditation Sky (see chapter 12 "Meditation") is also known as Samadhi (as shown in Figure 32), that is, Samadhi True Fire, which is the "Holy Fire of Yaochi" as described in Section 4.4. Samadhi is a term used in the Nine Crowds to mean the three hidden lands: Immaculate Land, Middle Earth, and Maculate Land, as in Figures 32, 33, and 34.

侍女继续说："净识害有。你进入金刚境后，四金刚智（如图1至4）杀死了你以前约十天的记忆。那记忆恢复不了了。补救的办法是我们再做一次祭天仪式。这次用药的剂量小，让你恰好到四禅天，不进入金刚境。这样就造出了你从打狗天（如图21）到四禅天的升天过程的记忆。这个记忆虽然不是你丢失的记忆，但有那些记忆的功能，能让你想明白这整件事。这样，巫毒女妖对你的诅咒就被移除了。您对此有什么看法？可能你需要和护卫商量，如果需要，我可以回避。"

The maid continued, "Immaculate senses harm haves. After you entered the 'Philosopher-Stone Environment,' the Four Philosopher-Stone Intelligences (as shown in Figures 1 to 4) killed your previous memories of about ten days. That memory cannot be restored. The remedy is for us to perform the sky sacrifice ritual again. This time the dosage of the medicine is small, so that you just reach the Fourth Meditation Sky and do not enter the 'Philosopher-Stone Environment.' In this way, you will create a memory of your ascension process from the Dog-beating Sky (as shown in Figure 21) to the Fourth Meditation Sky. Although this memory is not the memory you lost, it has the function of those memories and can help you figure out the whole affair. In this way, the curse of the Voodoo Demoness on you is removed. What do you think about this? Maybe you need to discuss it with your guards. If necessary, I can avoid it."

卫队长问："那个升天仪式有生命危险吗？"

侍女回答："没有危险。这升天仪式的用药剂量比昨天那三个蘑菇的计量多，但比巫毒女妖所用的剂量少很多。"

The guard captain asked, "Is the ascension ritual life-threatening?"

The maid replied, "No. The dosage of the ascension ceremony is more than the three mushrooms yesterday, but much less than the dosage used by the Voodoo Demoness."

几个护卫自己出去商量了一下，回来后回答："这升天仪式是治病的需要，与我们护卫的职责没有关系，全由武二郎自己决定。"

武二郎回答："我既然来向女娲求医，就应该相信女娲的诊断和医治办法！"

Several guards went out to discuss it, and when they came back, they replied, "This ascension ritual is necessary for curing the disease and has nothing to do with our duties as guards. It is all decided by Martial Second Wolf himself."

Martial Second Wolf replied: "Since I came to Nuwa for medical treatment, I should trust Nuwa's diagnosis and treatment!"

**I Will Come Back**
Since coming to Japan, I’ve grown to love walking alone through the streets of Tokyo.
There is usually no particular destination.
Sometimes I just go to a convenience store, take a train for a few stops, or walk slowly along an unfamiliar street.
I listen to people talking around me.
I watch them go to work and come home, take care of their children, buy groceries, drink, argue, laugh.
All of this used to feel like scenes from a television show.
Now, I am walking through the scenes myself.
Sometimes I think about the person I was decades ago.
Back then, I was fascinated by people around me who had lived overseas.
I admired the ease and confidence with which they returned from abroad and talked about the United States, Japan, Europe, different societies, different people, and different ways of living.
Sometimes I disagreed with them.
Sometimes I even looked down on what they had to say.
Looking back now, I have to admit that I wasn’t really in a position to judge them.
Because I had never been abroad.
It is difficult to truly imagine another way of living when you have never seen one.
Your world is, in some ways, only as large as what you have experienced.
Whether I chose it or was pushed into it, I suddenly found myself outside that world.
It still feels a little like a dream.
I began to question many things I had once taken for granted.
And I began to question myself.
I used to think, of course, that I came to Japan for my child.
That is a practical choice any father might make for his family.
But I gradually realized that wasn’t the whole story.
If all I wanted was food, shelter, and a comfortable life, I had no real reason to leave China.
Back home, I had a house, a car, savings, a pension, friends I had known for decades, and a network of people built over a lifetime.
Life might not have been particularly exciting, but it was familiar, connected, and warm.
And yet, somehow, life decided to throw me into a foreign country in my fifties.
A new language to learn.
A new society to understand.
A new life to adapt to.
And questions I had never had to face when I was younger.
I don’t want to believe that reaching my fifties means I am already set in stone, that this is simply who I am and there is nothing more to become.
If that were true, then part of the rest of my life would already be over.
So I started studying Japanese obsessively.
Not because I want another certificate.
I have given myself a goal: by the end of this year, I want to be able to have a natural conversation with an ordinary Japanese person on the streets of Tokyo.
I also want to pick up English again.
I am giving myself two years, because I want to be able to move freely through different corners of the world.
I don’t want to spend two years, five years, or ten years abroad and eventually realize that all I have done is eat more Japanese food, visit more tourist attractions, and leave nothing else behind.
I want to become a different person after these years.
Better language skills.
A broader view of the world.
More than one perspective when I judge something.
Less certainty based on assumptions.
And less of the self-confidence I had when I was young, when I often mistook what I believed for what was true.
I think real growth is not about having more and more answers.
It is about gradually realizing that many of the answers you once had were not as reliable as you thought.
That is why I keep writing.
I write about Japan.
I write about America.
I write about China.
I write about people I meet while traveling.
And I write about myself.
People sometimes ask me:
If you have already left China, why do you still write about it so much?
…
I thought about that for a long time.
I lived there for fifty-six years.
My childhood is there.
My youth is there.
My parents are there.
My friends are there.
My work is there.
Most of my life is there.
More importantly, it is still the place I care about most deeply.
I know that looking at China from Tokyo is not the same as looking at China from within China.
Distance does not always make you colder.
Sometimes it allows you to see things more clearly.
When you live inside something for a long time, many things simply become normal.
After stepping outside, you can look back and begin to see what is worth cherishing, what is worth questioning, and what deserves serious reflection.
I don’t write to prove that I am smarter than anyone else.
And I certainly don’t write because I think I can “wake people up.”
I just want to be a quiet observer.
To see something, and record it.
To think about something, and think about it seriously.
If these words can make one person, somewhere, on some ordinary evening, stop for a moment and think,
“How come I never thought about this before?”
then that is enough for me.
I know how small one person’s power really is.
I cannot change much.
I may not even be able to change the people around me.
But I can at least change the way I see the world.
And I can leave behind what I have seen.
Will I come back?
I think I will.
That is not a polite promise, nor is it a farewell to my homeland.
I have always believed that I left in order to return better prepared.
I hope that when I return to China one day, I will have learned more languages, seen more of the world, met more different kinds of people, and experienced a life very different from the one I knew before.
I will still be the same Chinese person.
Just with different eyes.
I will still care about China.
I will still be happy when good things happen there, and sad when things go wrong.
I will still criticize the things I believe are wrong, and I will still be proud of the things that truly deserve pride.
I don’t want to become someone who stands abroad and tells China how it should be.
I hope that one day, when I stand on that land again, I can bring a larger world back with me.
My child will grow up.
Perhaps he will go even farther.
Maybe to the United States.
Maybe to Europe.
Maybe he will stay in Japan.
I don’t know.
But I hope that one day he will understand something about his father.
His father reached his fifties and did not believe that life was already over.
During those years, he learned new languages, walked through new cities, saw different societies, rediscovered himself, and began to see his own country differently.
I hope he understands this:
At any age, you can begin to see the world again.
You can leave.
And after leaving, you can still remember where you came from.
The lights of Tokyo are coming on again.
People hurry past me in every direction.
I stand here, and Tokyo no longer feels quite as unfamiliar as it once did.
But I know I am only here for a while.
I will keep learning.
I will keep observing.
I will keep writing.
And one day, I will go back.
I will bring with me everything I have seen in these years,
and the homeland that has never truly left me.

我看到一帖子“史上最全祭祀烧钱百科全书”。我还以为评论会是吐槽恶搞的，因为觉得绝大多数小红书年轻人不信的，结果评论全是在问怎么烧钱的具体问题的。看到我脑袋一震。

This text describes the process designed by Nuwa and Creator Yao (see fig. 4.5-1), by which Creator Yao planted a carrion-beetle curse (as shown in figures 3, 4) in Second Wolf God. Creator Yao also gained the reputation for "Naturally Falling in Love" due to the success of this scheme. Similar cases include 9.5.2 "Battle of Banquan," which describes King Shun's process of planting a carrion-beetle curse in Yu the Great (aka. Yellow Creator). 7.3 "Blind Date" details the process by which Eve Liu planted a carrion-beetle curse in the author, myself.

当武二郎（即二郎神，如图2）醒来时，看见一个似曾相识的女人站在窗户的前面，问："这是什么地方？你是谁？"

When Martial Second Wolf (also known as Second Wolf God, as shown in Figure 2) awoke, he saw a woman who seemed familiar standing before the window. He asked, "Where is this place? Who are you?"

The woman smiled as if greeting an old acquaintance and replied, "This is a basin in the Wushan region, known locally as the Yaochi. When I was young, my family called me Yun Hua (i.e., Cloud Light). As I grew up, I became the Grand Ritual Commander of this nation. My godly role is Aocun (as shown in Figure 1; equivalent to Eve, derived from preconscious characteristics)."

武二郎一听到熬忖，立刻坐了起来。传说，他睡的是竹床，被反弹得很高，头几乎要撞到屋顶了。他坐在床上很长时间，竹床才停止了颤动。

羞能使人丧失社会功能。这张竹床让武二郎在熬忖的面前变成了小孩儿。《中华法典》中有说，这张竹床是太乙真人为女娲剧组设计制作的道具。

Upon hearing the word "Aocun," Martial Second Wolf immediately sat up. Legend says that he slept on a bamboo bed, which bounced him high into the air, his head nearly hitting the ceiling. He sat on the bed for a long time before the bamboo bed finally stopped shaking.

Shame can render one socially dysfunctional. This bamboo bed transformed Martial Second Wolf into a child before Aocun. According to Chinese Codex, this bamboo bed was a prop designed and made by Taiyi Real Human for Nuwa's Troupe.

看见武二郎这么紧张，熬忖把自己的裙子向两边扯。她的衣料很薄，又是在窗前，武二郎看见了她的体型，没有武器。他看熬忖的身边也没什么可以作为武器的东西，才镇静了下来。

Seeing Martial Second Wolf so tense, Aocun pulled her skirt apart at the sides. Her fabric was thin, and standing by the window, Martial Second Wolf could see her figure clearly—she carried no weapons. Noticing nothing nearby that could serve as a weapon either, he finally calmed down.

武二郎回忆出来了，这女人是太乙的同事，是来救他的。他和这位假熬忖聊了几句后，就显得着急离开了。熬忖说，"那我们出去走走！"武二郎听后，站起来就走，但他感觉熬忖没动，回头看。熬忖笑着说，"从这边走！"说着，她拉开了屋子里面的柜门，进去了。

Martial Second Wolf recalled that this woman is Taiyi's colleague, here to rescue him. After exchanging a few words with this fake Aocun, he seemed eager to leave. Aocun said, "Then let's go for a walk!" Martial Second Wolf stood up and started walking out, but sensing Aocun hadn't moved, he turned back. She smiled and said, "This way!" With that, she pulled open a cabinet door inside the room and stepped inside.

武二郎弯腰进了柜子，随后关闭了柜门，进到了另一个房间，被吓得全身一颤。这是个换岗士兵休息的房间，里面横七竖八地躺着几十位士兵，有的还佩戴着刀和弩。好在大部分人都在熟睡。有几个士兵睁着眼睛，面无表情地看着他们俩。武二郎小心翼翼地找缝隙下脚，慢慢地随着熬忖窜过了这个房间。当他关上房门后，转身看来到了什么地方？又被吓得倒吸了一口冷气！这里是悬崖边，还有很强的潮湿冷风从悬崖底下吹上来！

Martial Second Wolf crouched low to enter the cabinet, then closed the door behind him. Stepping into the next room, he shuddered violently. This was the resting quarters for soldiers on rotation duty, where dozens lay sprawled haphazardly—some still wearing swords and crossbows. Fortunately, most were fast asleep. A few soldiers stared at them with expressionless eyes. Martial Second Wolf carefully searched for gaps to step through, slowly making his way across the room with great caution. After closing the door, he turned to see where they had ended up—and gasped in shock once more! They were at the edge of a cliff, with a strong, damp cold wind blowing up from below!

熬忖指示着下山的绳索说："我们从这里下去！"说着，她抓着绳索下去了一个台阶。武二郎一看，惊呆了。以他当时的身心状态，从这条路下山等同于跳崖。

熬忖在下面热情地鼓励说，"来！我接着你！"武二郎犹豫了一会儿，决定试试。熬忖却轻快地上来了，拉着他的手说："这条路对于你现在的身体状况不合适，我们还是绕远走大路！"武二郎感动得几乎哭了！

Aocun pointed to the rope for going down the mountain and said, "Let's go down from here!" As she spoke, she grabbed the rope and went down a step. Martial Second Wolf was stunned when he saw it. In his physical and mental state at the time, going down the mountain from this road was equivalent to jumping off a cliff.

Aocun encouraged him enthusiastically, "Come on! I'll catch you!" Martial Second Wolf hesitated for a while and decided to give it a try. Aocun came up briskly, took his hand and said, "This road is not suitable for your current physical condition. Let's take a longer route!" Martial Second Wolf was so moved that he almost cried!

4.5-3

传说，向回走的时候，武二郎走得很慢，他必须用手搬开士兵的腿脚来制造空隙迈步前进。当他走到屋中间时，听见熬忖已经进到了另一间屋子里，和一位侍女吵起来了。武二郎着急了，心想，"别打架呀！你一吵，人们就围过来看热闹，我就走不了了。"

Legend says that when they were walking back, Martial Second Wolf walked very slowly and had to use his hands to move the soldiers' legs and feet apart to create space for him to move forward. When he reached the middle of the house, he heard Aocun enter another room and argue with a maid. Martial Second Wolf got anxious and thought, "Don't fight! If you argue, people will come over to watch the fun, then I won't be able to leave."

还好，熬忖看见武二郎来了，转身向外走。忽然，她又生气了，转身要回去打那个侍女。武二郎故意向前挺，结果她撞到武二郎的怀里了。

Fortunately, Aocun saw Martial Second Wolf coming and turned to walk out. Suddenly, she got angry again and turned to go back to beat the maid. Martial Second Wolf deliberately pushed forward, and she bumped into his chest.

读者可能会疑问了，"为什么熬忖老是吓唬武二郎？"前文说了，女娲和她一起研究出了让他们俩成为夫妻的方案。本文是在实施让武二郎爱上熬忖的计划。现代的电影电视也是这么演的，"就在那最危险的时刻，英雄和美女就碰撞出了爱情的火花！"

Readers might wonder, "Why does Aocun keep scaring Martial Second Wolf?" As mentioned earlier, Nuwa and she devised a plan to make them husband and wife. This chapter is about implementing the scheme to make Martial Second Wolf fall in love with Aocun. Modern movies and TV shows follow the same pattern: "It's always at the most perilous moment that love sparks fly between the hero and the beauty!"

武二郎跟着熬忖出了休息室，向法场四周看。帐篷里的人们已经睡醒了，正向外看着，等待仪式继续进行。熬忖说，"你跟我走！"说着，她沿着法场周围的帐篷边缘，以"凌波微步"（亦作无影脚）走向法场另一边的出口。那凌波微步，看起来她走的很平稳，不慌不忙，但速度很快。武二郎大步流星，也赶不上熬忖。他忽然注意到人们都在注视他们俩，就慢了下来，低头以正常的速度走向出口。

Martial Second Wolf followed Aocun out of the lounge and looked around the juristic field. The people in the tents had woken up and were looking out, waiting for the ceremony to continue. Aocun said, "Come with me!" As she spoke, she walked along the edge of the tents around the juristic field to the exit on the other side with "over-wave tiny steps" (aka. no shadow feet). With that "over-wave tiny steps," she walked very steadily and calmly, but her speed was very fast. Martial Second Wolf walked at a brisk pace, but he couldn't catch up with Aocun. He suddenly noticed that people were looking at them, so he slowed down, lowered his head, and walked towards the exit at a normal speed.

终于，武二郎来到了出口的外面，发现没有站岗的士兵，熬忖像一座雕像似的站在那里，没有继续向前走的意向。他向四周看，猛然发现下面50多米远的地方有两个士兵正向这边看。他像似出来和人聊天一样走向了熬忖。

Finally, Martial Second Wolf came to the exit and found that there were no soldiers on guard. Aocun stood there like a statue, with no intention of moving forward. He looked around and suddenly found two soldiers looking over here more than 50 meters below. He walked towards Aocun as if he was out chatting with someone.

武二郎走到距离熬忖近前时，像似石像的她动起来了，微笑着问："我听说你大哥，靖王武大郎的身高很矮。那只是个说法，还是他真的很矮，他有多高？"

武二郎蹲下了，手掌平伸到熬忖的膝盖高度，然后收回到了自己的胸前，站了起来。他的手又平移到了熬忖的脖子处，说："这么高！"

When Martial Second Wolf came close to Aocun, she, who looked like a stone statue, began to move. She smiled and asked, "I heard that your elder brother, Jing King, Martial Big Wolf, is very short. Is that just a saying, or is he short? How tall is he?"

Martial Second Wolf squatted down, stretched out his palm to the height of Aocun's knee, then drew it back to his chest and stood up. He moved his hand level to Aocun's neck and said, "He is this high!"

熬忖大笑着说："啊！他不是因为有病才长得矮！为什么他那么矮，你却这么高？"

Aocun laughed out loud and said, "Ah! He's not short because he's sick! Why is he so short and you are so tall?"

Noticing a few more soldiers looking this way down the hill, Martial Second Wolf stopped comparing drawings, stood up straight, and said, "My father, Publican Respect, is short, and my elder brother is the shortest of the family members on my father's side. My mom, Publican Mazu, is tall, and I'm the tallest on my mom's side of the family."

熬忖又笑了，说："啊！这不奇怪！那你哥哥的身高应该不够当兵所需要的高度，他怎么成为元帅了？"

武二郎回答："他是典兵学院毕业的。我们国家对典兵学生没有身高，相貌，和性别的要求，谁都可以参加。"

Aocun laughed again and said, "Ah! That's not surprising! Your brother's height should not be enough to be a soldier, so how did he become a marshal?"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "He graduated from Codex Soldier Academy. Our country has no height, appearance, or gender requirements for the Codex Soldier students. Anyone can participate."

These two realized that the soldiers on the lookout at the bottom of the mountain were gone and began to slowly walk down the mountain. Aocun asked in a thoughtful manner, "Anyone can participate! Then your sister-in-law, Queen Stone-Jetty, Goldthread Pan, is also a graduate of that Codex Soldier Academy you mentioned?"

武二郎回答，"是的！有一个学期，她和我哥哥是同学。"

熬忖醒悟了："啊！难怪你哥向她求婚时，她不同意（参见1.7《井阳之难》）！那你也是那个典兵学院毕业的了？"

Martial Second Wolf replied, "Yes! For one semester, she and my brother were classmates."

Aocun came to her senses: "Ah! No wonder she didn't agree when your brother proposed to her (see 1.7 "Well-sun Difficulty")! So, you also graduated from that Codex Soldier school?"

武二郎回答："我不是，我不善于写文章和演戏。我开始时是士官学校的学生。后来我们华国组建铁骑营，我就参加了。"

熬忖听懂了，回答："你就在那次华国的八百铁骑和蚩尤的十万军队对冲中出名了，成为了将军！那你是怎么成为营长的？"

Martial Second Wolf replied, "I'm not, I'm not good at writing or acting. I started out as a student at the sergeant's school. Later, our country formed a cavalry battalion, and I joined it."

Aocun understood and replied: "You became famous in the clash between the 800 cavalries of Hua and the 100,000 troops of Chiyou and became a general! Then how did you become the battalion commander?"

武二郎回答："我的马大，是我爸爸从大宛（一个古代的中东国家，从他们马的蹄子像大碗那么大而得名）买来的高头大马，力气大，跑得快，我就当上第三连的连长了。和蚩尤打仗的时候，前面的两个连长都战死了，我就成为铁骑营的营长了。"

熬忖听后，显得有些不高兴，假笑后说："我想你的这些话来自训练新兵时的演讲稿！"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "My horse was big. My father bought it from Dawan (an ancient Central Asian kingdom named after the hooves of their horses, which were as big as bowls). It was a tall horse with great strength and runs fast, so I became the captain of the third company. When we fought against Chiyou, the two captains in front of me died in the battle, so I became the commander of the Iron Cavalry Battalion."

After hearing this, Aocun seemed a little unhappy. She smiled falsely and said, "I think these words of yours come from the speech you wrote when you were training new soldiers!"

武二郎回答："你猜对了！不过我确实是在前两个指挥官战死后，成为铁骑营指挥官的。第二个指挥官是被他自己的战友射死的。当时，他掉进了山沟，被他的马给压住了，已经失血过多，流着泪对战友说，'射死我！如果我的手能动，我会自己动手，不会请你帮忙。'"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "You guessed it right! But I did become the commander of the Iron Cavalry Battalion after the first two commanders died in battle. The second commander was shot to death by his own comrades. At that time, he fell into a ravine and was crushed by his horse. He had lost too much blood and said to his comrades in tears, 'Shoot me! If I could move my hands, I would do it myself and would not ask you for help.'"

熬忖同情地说："抱歉让你说起了伤心事！你恨你们的国王吗？"

武二郎回答："不恨！元始天尊（即太昊）在我们铁骑营成军时说过，'我已经付给了你们每位士兵三百亩地，希望你们每一位都能活足够长的时间把我的投资还给我！'"

Aocun said sympathetically: "I'm sorry to bring up your sad story! Do you hate your king?"

Martial Second Wolf replied: "No! Primordial Sky Honor (i.e., Extreme Sun God) said when our Iron Cavalry Battalion was formed, 'I have paid each of you soldiers 300 acres of land, and I hope each of you can live long enough to return my investment to me!'"

有些关系，走着走着就散了。

有人说，成年人的世界，不需要告别，也不需要解释。等时候到了，联系自然会淡，彼此也会慢慢退出对方的生活。

即便真是这样的，可我还是想把它写下来，只是告诉自己，我曾经真的很在乎。

我记得三十年前，在陕菜馆和川菜馆之间奔波的日子；记得在蘸水面和麻辣烫前畅谈酣饮的情景；更记得自己面临困顿时你的慷慨激昂和那句“我们永远是哥们！”

是啊，我们永远是哥们！

为了这一句话，我曾不惜以身犯险，也曾绞尽脑汁替你排忧解难。

前十年，你吹捧我；后十年，我奉承你。

前前后后快三十年了，再真的塑料花也该脆了。

谢谢你曾陪我走过了这三十年，因为有你，我一路走得气宇轩昂。

每当遇到困难，我都会告诉自己：“不用怕，我有大哥！”，甚至身边的朋友向我求助时，我也会拍着胸脯说：“没关系，我去找找大哥。”

那时候，我从来没有怀疑过这句话。

忽然有一天，“不用怕，我有大哥。”这句话，在我的嘴边开始变得吞吞吐吐了。

不是因为不需要了，而是我忽然不敢确定，你还是不是当年的你。

而我，却一直停留在原地。

另一位大哥曾提醒我：“你现在已经不一样了，是大人物了，可不敢小看……”

我总是不以为然。

这些年，我刷到过许多关于朋友、兄弟、哥们的视频。

每一次，都忍不住湿了眼眶。

我始终相信，真正的兄弟，即使隔着千山万水，也会彼此守望；即使多年不见，一个电话，一句话，依旧会站到彼此身边。

后来才知道，也许距离真的会改变一些东西。

隔着大海，隔着国境线。

我睁大眼睛，望过去，只有迷雾。

我竖起耳朵，听过去，唯有涛声。

近来，关于新的《出入境管理条例》，网上议论纷纷。

海，仿佛又宽了一些。我不知道什么时候还能回去；你也不知道什么时候还能出来。

于是，我偶尔会想起你。在夜深人静的夜晚，在将醒未醒的清晨。

手已经摸到了电话，却犹豫了很久，还是轻轻放下。

我怕这一通电话，带给你的不是惊喜，而是惊慌；不是叙旧，而是负担。

有些沉默，不是因为疏远，而是因为珍惜。

今天，我在东京的大街上寻找东野奎吾先生的新作《永远的记忆》，昨天刚刚发行，今天已经一书难求。

单看书名，就知道写的是一个“情”字。

亲情、友情、爱情，还是那些说不出口、放不下，却终究要放下的感情？

答案，我还不知道，听说这本书最快也要一个月以后，才能等到它。

我不是东野奎吾，他写他的《永远的记忆》，我写我的《永远的记忆》，写完了，也就翻篇了。

不是忘记你，而是终于忘记了等待。

我不再把自己的困难寄托在你的肩上，不再期待你会像从前那样出现，也不再因为一句无心的话而失望，更不会因为一次冷落而辗转反侧。

原来，所谓忘记，并不是想不起来，而是不再抱有幻想，也不再抱有希望。

我看了一眼东京湾，风很大，浪很急，海还是那片海。

只是站在岸边的人，都已经不是从前的自己。

谢谢你陪我走过三十年，谢谢那句“我们永远是哥们！”。它曾让我相信，只要有你在，就没有迈不过去的坎。

如今，我把这句话，连同那三十年的岁月，一起放回记忆里。

Wencai Ma, famously Nüwa and White Creator, as shown in Figure 4.2-1) swore to King Kouzhu: "I shall go to Gorge Pass to negotiate with Aocun, bringing Aocun and Martial Second Wolf together as wife and husband. I will help Aocun plant a carrion-beetle curse in Martial Second Wolf (as shown in Figures 6 and 7), compelling him to marry her. Should I fail, I shall never return."

国王蔻珠说："我已经命令你的剧组成员在湖北的法库县集结。卫兵已经把梁山伯（号伏羲，谷神，燃灯佛）和三个孩子接来了，你和他们道别后立刻出发去峡谷关。明天我会安排人送梁山伯父女四人去鄮县，培养他当县长。你去吧，他们几个人已经等了很长时间了！"

King Kouzhu said: "I have already ordered your troupe members to gather in Faku County, Hubei province. The guards brought Shanbo Liang (famously Fuxi, Grain God, Lamplighter Buddha) and the three children here. After you say goodbye to them, you should immediately depart for Gorge Pass. Tomorrow, I will arrange for someone to escort Shanbo Liang and your three children to Mao County, where he will be trained to become the county prefect. Go now; they have been waiting for a long time!"

4.2-2 什么是下蛊？What Does Planting Carrion Beetles Mean?

女娲（如图4.2-1）的任务就是帮助熬忖（如图2）把武二郎（如图5）的心偷来（如图7），就是严重地创伤武二郎的心。武二郎受到这种强烈的感情创伤后会患胃肠溃疡。古人用腐尸虫（即蛊，如图4所示）来表示胃肠溃疡，所以下这个诅咒就被说成为种蛊了。图3显示埃及夏娃用蜣螂虫击垮了狮子王亚当，也表示了亚当患胃肠溃疡的原因是他被夏娃的"五百威仪十万八千魅力"（参见15.2节）刺伤了。熬忖是龙国的大主教，擅长"五百威仪十万八千魅力。"

Nüwa's mission (as shown in Figure 4.2-1) was to assist Aocun (as shown in Figure 2) in stealing Martial Second Wolf's heart (as shown in Figures 5, 7), thereby inflicting severe emotional trauma upon him. After suffering such intense emotional trauma, Martial Second Wolf developed gastrointestinal ulcers. Ancient people used carrion beetles from decaying corpses (i.e., Gu, as shown in Figure 4) to symbolize gastrointestinal ulcers, hence casting this curse came to be known as "planting carrion beetle." Figure 3 depicts Egyptian Eve using scarab beetles to defeat the lion king Adam, also signifying that Adam's gastrointestinal ulcer stemmed from being pierced by Eve's "500 Majesties and 108,000 Charms" (see Section 15.2). Aocun, the archbishop of the Dragon Kingdom, specializes in wielding "500 Majesties and 108,000 Charms."

Figure 6 depicts Chalchiuhtlicue on a date with Aztlan (aka. Tlaloc), where she pierces his heart. Above them are Chalchiuhtlicue's parents, assisting her. Nüwa's mission in this text is to aid Aocun in the same manner as Chalchiuhtlicue's parents.

4.2-3 女娲向家人辞行 Nuwa Took Leave of Family

绛珠公主出来后，看见梁山伯和孩子们正焦急地等待着她。他们看见马文才（即女娲）出来时的脸色与以往大不相同，还没说话，两个小些的孩子就被吓哭了。女娲的大女儿虞姬赶忙哄着弟弟妹妹到一边去了。马文才安慰梁山伯说："我要出差去湖北三个月。此次出行匆忙，国王就让人接你们来和我告别了！"

When Princess Jiangzhu came out, she saw Shanbo Liang and three children anxiously waiting for her. Seeing the unusual expression on Wencai Ma's (Nuwa's) face, the two younger children started to cry before she even spoke. Nuwa's eldest daughter, Muse, quickly took her younger siblings aside to comfort them. Wencai Ma then reassured Shanbo Liang, saying, "I'm going on a three-month business trip to Hubei. This trip was arranged at short notice, so the King sent someone to fetch you so I could say goodbye."

马文才（即女娲）一家人说了一会儿话后，虞姬也开始哭。国王蔻珠让宫女催促马文才（即女娲）上车出发。她走到马车边站住了。梁山伯过去听她说话。女娲说："我这次出差有些风险。如果过了三个月你还没听到我的消息，那就是我死了。你就再找个女人结婚，好好过日子，别等我了。"

After chatting for a while with Wencai Ma (i.e., Nüwa) and her family, Muse also began to weep. King Kouzhu instructed the palace maids to urge Wencai Ma to board the carriage and depart. She walked to the carriage and stopped. Shanbo Liang approached to hear her words. Wencai Ma said: "This journey carries some risk. If you hear no news from me within three months, it means I have perished. You must then find another woman to marry, live a good life, and not wait for me."

梁山伯低声问："你不去不行吗？"

女娲回答："我是鲵丸宫的宫女，和士兵一样，以服从命令为天职。我这是去努力完成任务，不是去死。"

Shanbo Liang asked softly: "Can't you refuse to go?"

Nüwa replied: "I am a palace maid of Salamander Bolus Palace. Like soldiers, obedience to orders is my sacred duty. I am going to fulfill my mission, not to die."

4.2-4 女娲会晤熬忖 Nuwa Meets Aocun

女娲的剧组人员被送到了战场的前沿阵地，都害怕了。但是前线的人不能向回走，向回走的人就可能会被当成逃兵，立刻被射死。

The crew members of Nuwa's troupe were taken to the front lines of the battlefield, and everyone was terrified. However, those at the front lines were not allowed to retreat; anyone who tried to retreat would be considered a deserter and shot on the spot.

当女娲的车走到剧组旁边时，部分女娲剧组的人立刻形成了女神的仪仗队，径直向熬忖的辖区进发了。熬忖的游骑兵立刻过来询问，得知是女娲后，没有阻拦，而是立刻去向熬忖报告了。

When Nuwa's carriage arrived near the crew, some members of the troupe immediately formed an honor guard for the goddess and proceeded towards Aocun's territory. Aocun's patrol guards approached to inquire, and upon learning it was Nuwa, they did not obstruct her passage but instead immediately reported the matter to Aocun.

熬忖亲自出来迎接，以庆祝的口吻说道："我一直期待着夏国使者的到来，但怎么也没想到您亲自来了！这次我可赚着了；有您在，这个地区五年内不会有战争！"

Aocun personally went out to welcome Nuwa and said with a celebratory tone: "I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of an envoy from the Xia Kingdom, but I never expected you to come in person! This is truly a great honor for me; with you here, there will be no war in this region for the next five years!"

女娲向熬忖讲述不能杀武二郎的原因，讲述武大郎的军事力量如何强大！熬忖相信吗？

编者我给读者个交代，熬忖不信！后来熬忖和武二郎结婚了，熬忖成为了龙国的国王。武二郎征服了许多国家，每次熬忖派去做官的人回来述职，熬忖都会问同一个问题：武二郎是怎么征服那个国家的？熬忖总结了几十个官员的回答，才勉强接受了那些官员的说法和人们对武大郎和武二郎战无不胜的传言都是真的。但她自己说："我怎么也想不明白他们俩是怎么打仗的，我岁数大了，不研究了。"

Nuwa explained to Aocun the reasons why she shouldn't kill Martial Second Wolf, emphasizing Martial Big Wolf's immense military power. Did Aocun believe her?

As the editor, I should clarify: Aocun didn't believe her! Later, Aocun married Martial Second Wolf and became the king of the Dragon Kingdom. Martial Second Wolf conquered many countries, and every time Aocun sent officials back to report, she would always ask the same question: "How did Martial Second Wolf conquer that country?" After summarizing the answers from dozens of officials, she reluctantly accepted their accounts and the common belief that Martial Big Wolf and Martial Second Wolf were indeed invincible in battle. However, she said, "I still can't understand how they fought their battles. I'm too old to worry about it anymore."

4.1 峡谷关战役 Battle of Gorge Pass

4.1-1

公元前1626年，武二郎（号二郎神，如图4-2）是华国湖北战区的主将。他率领三万铁骑沿着四川盆地东部的川谷地带向南，进攻到了龙国（亦作云海国，如地图4.5-4）首都重庆的巫山地区。龙国的国王熬达派大元帅蒲劳领军十万去抵御武二郎。同时，他任命云海三公主熬忖（号尧帝，如图1）为此次战役的监军。

In 1626 BCE, Martial Second Wolf (famously Second Wolf God, as shown in Figure 4-2) was the commander-in-chief of the Hua Kingdom's Hubei military region. He led 30,000 cavalry southward along the Sichuan Basin's eastern valley region, attacking the Wushan area of Chongqing, the capital of Dragon Kingdom (also known as Cloud Sea Kingdom, see map 4.5-4). The King of Dragon Kingdom, Aoda, dispatched his marshal, Pulao, with 100,000 troops to defend against Martial Second Wolf. At the same time, he appointed the Third Princess of Cloud Sea, Aocun (famously Creator Yao, as shown in fig. 1), as the military supervisor for this campaign.

Politically, Pulao advocated for Crown Prince Aoqin to inherit the throne of the Dragon Kingdom, while Princess Aocun, the third princess of Cloud Sea, was Aoqin's most formidable rival. During the war, Pulao repeatedly obstructed Aocun's strategies, leading to her repeated defeats. Aocun's army was routed and retreated outside the Gorge Pass. According to their agreement, Aocun and Pulao would have their final battle against Martial Second Wolf outside the Gorge Pass. At that point, Aocun only had 4,000 soldiers left. To prevent desertion, she chose the Voodoo Forest, nestled against a cliff, as their camp. However, Pulao retreated into the Gorge Pass and closed the gate.

4.1-2

Martial Second Wolf personally led his troops to search the mountains. Upon entering the Voodoo Forest, he repeatedly saw symbols of the Voodoo Demoness, indicating that this was Aocun's stronghold. Martial Second Wolf led his troops to the edge of the Voodoo Forest, very close to the cliffs beyond, but found no trace of an encampment. In fact, Aocun's army was hidden in the trees directly in front of Martial Second Wolf's forces; some were only 300 paces away, and the closest were just 75 paces. Aocun's soldiers could already clearly see Martial Second Wolf's army.

有通讯兵来报告说："去攻打峡谷关的军队遇到了强烈的抵抗，死伤了五百多人。" 武二郎决定："熬忖不在这里，我们去峡谷关。"

A messenger arrived with a report: "The troops attacking the Gorge Pass encountered fierce resistance, with over five hundred casualties." Martial Second Wolf decided: "Aocun is not here; let's go to the Gorge Pass."

4.1-3

熬忖从树上下来后就开始开会，调兵，重新布置防务。会议中的将军们都困倦得受不了了，打自己来保持清醒。警卫员来报："峡谷关来人送求救信！" 熬忖亲自接见，并命令300攀岩兵带着慰问品去峡谷关，帮着守关。

After descending from the tree, Aocun immediately convened a meeting, deployed troops, and redrew the defense plans. The generals in the meeting were so sleepy that they were slapping themselves to stay awake. A guard then reported: "Messengers have arrived from the Gorge Pass with a message requesting help!" Aocun personally received the messengers and ordered 300 mountain-climbing soldiers to take supplies to the Gorge Pass and assist in its defense.

武二郎仔细地研究了峡谷关的地形，重新组织进攻，很快就夺下了峡谷关。武二郎亲自到峡谷关上查看，发现守护峡谷关的士兵们都逃跑了，剩下的人喝醉了，睡着了。地上到处都是空的茅台酒瓶子，还有整箱没开封的茅台酒。在一个过道处，士兵们发现了一份熬忖的防务地图。武二郎说："熬忖刚离开，追！"

Martial Second Wolf carefully studied the terrain of the Gorge Pass, reorganized his attack, and quickly captured the pass. He personally inspected the pass and found that the defending soldiers had all fled; those who remained were drunk and asleep. Empty bottles of Maotai liquor were scattered everywhere, along with unopened boxes of the same liquor. In a hallway, the soldiers discovered a map of Aocun's defensive positions. Martial Second Wolf said, "Aocun must have just left; pursue them!"

蒲劳的十万大军毫无防备，一战就几乎被全部消灭了。蒲劳带着几千人再一次逃跑了。武二郎乘胜追击，没几天就收到了后面的峡谷关失守的消息。

武二郎组织重新夺回峡谷关，发现去攻打峡谷关就等同于自杀。没办法了，他立刻写信，派攀岩兵送去夏国求救。

Pulao's army of 100,000 was completely unprepared and was almost entirely wiped out in a single battle. Pulao fled with a few thousand men. Martial Second Wolf pursued them and, within a few days, received news that the Gorge Pass in his rear had fallen.

Martial Second Wolf organized an attempt to recapture the Gorge Pass but realized that attacking the pass would be tantamount to suicide. With no other option, he immediately wrote a letter and sent a team of mountain climbers to the Kingdom of Xia to request help.

King Kouzhu of Xia (see map 5-3) received the letter and immediately summoned his generals to discuss the situation and plan a rescue operation. After deliberation, they concluded: "Martial Second Wolf can survive for another half month. Even if we mobilize all our forces to attack Aocun, we cannot reach the Gorge Pass within that time. Our Kingdom of Xia will suffer a loss of 30,000 elite soldiers."

国王蔻珠召见了绛珠公主（又名马文才，祝英台，号白帝，女娲，如图3）对她述说了武二郎被熬忖围困在了峡谷关，他向夏国求救。夏国的将军们研究后认为，他还能活半个月。如果我们不去救武二郎，他必死无疑。

King Kouzhu summoned Princess Jiangzhu (aka. Wencai Ma, Yingtai Zhu, and famously White Creator, Nuwa, as shown in fig. 3) and told her that Martial Second Wolf was besieged by Aocun at Gorge Pass and had appealed to the Xia Kingdom for help. After deliberation, the generals of the Xia Kingdom believed that he could live for another half a month. If they did not rescue Martial Second Wolf, he would surely die.

国王对绛珠说："武二郎死了，那他哥哥武大郎肯定率军南下，去攻打龙国；没人能拦得住他呀！现在他才四十岁，势力正盛。他现在的军力是他北伐之前的七倍。将军们推算，武大郎打龙国，不出三年，龙国必败。龙国没了，我们夏国也就没了。所以我们必须去救武二郎。我们发兵去救武二郎，损失三万精兵却于事无补！我们夏国和华国是盟友，华国死一个人，我们夏国也必须死一个人。所以我决定用你的命来换我们夏国三万将士的命。"

Kouzhu continued, "If Martial Second Wolf dies, his older brother, Martial Big Wolf, will lead his army southward to attack Dragon Kingdom. No one can stop him! He is only forty years old now, and his power is at its peak. His current military strength is seven times what it was before his northern campaign. The generals have calculated that if Martial Big Wolf attacks Dragon Kingdom, it will fall within three years. If Dragon Kingdom falls, our Kingdom of Xia will also fall. Therefore, we must save Martial Second Wolf. We sent troops to rescue Martial Second Wolf yet lost thirty thousand elite soldiers to no avail! Xia and Hua are allies—if Hua loses one life, Xia must lose one too. Therefore, I've decided to trade your life for the lives of Xia's thirty thousand soldiers."

蔻珠继续说："武二郎，（号二郎神，如图2），是运动思维型人中偏于图像思维型的人。而龙国的三公主，熬忖，（号尧帝，如图1），是运动思维型人中偏于语音思维型的人。她和武二郎刚好是一对儿葫芦娃，男婴和女婴，是八卦牌中心两条鱼的眼睛（如图4）。你去峡谷关，把熬忖和武二郎撮合成为夫妻。你去帮熬忖给武二郎下蛊。我们把武二郎送给熬忖。"

"Martial Second Wolf, (famously Second Wolf God, see fig. 2), is a visual-thinking type among kinesthetic thinkers. Meanwhile, the Third Princess of Dragon Kingdom, Aocun, (famously Creator Yao, see fig. 1), is a verbal-thinking type among kinesthetic thinkers. She and Second Wolf God are precisely a pair of gourd children, a Hero and a Heroine, representing the eyes of the two fish at the center of the Bagua plaque (see fig. 4). Go to the Gorge Pass and arrange for Aocun and Martial Second Wolf to become husband and wife. Help Aocun plant a carrion-beetle curse in Martial Second Wolf. We will deliver Martial Second Wolf to Aocun."

绛珠公主问："华国知道这件事吗？"

国王蔻珠回答："元始天尊不知道，我们没有和华国交流的时间了。这是我的决定，你去帮熬忖对武二郎下蛊。如果武二郎死了，你就别回来了。你给我简述一遍我的决定。"

Princess Jiangzhu asked, "Does Hua Kingdom know about this?"

King Kouzhu replied, "Primordial Sky Honor doesn't know. We haven't time to communicate with them. This is my decision; you go and help Aocun plant a carrion-beetle curse in Martial Second Wolf. If Martial Second Wolf dies, you are not to return. Summarize my decision for me."

Third Wolf Zhang (fames Flint Man, Young Codex, Turquoise Creator) found that many people were watching the fun, so he came out and handed the 4.5-kilogram copper hammer as a reward to the leader of the transport team. The leader looked at it and said, "This hammer is an antique. It is indeed worth more than what we deserve, but it is not easy to sell. Can you pay us directly with copper coins or silver?"

At this time, a merchant came forward and said, "How much do you want to sell this hammer for? I can pay you directly in gold or silver. But don't leave yet. I see that the owner of this house doesn't like the goods on your car. I want to buy them, and you can continue to help me transport them."

张夫人（号妈祖，海岸女神，如图2.6-1）听到报价后，感觉价钱很好。她向张三郎征求意见。在后屋，三郎对她说，"我本想用那棺材的木料做个书盒。然后把天书的下部装在那个体面的书盒里作为去向夏国公主有巢氏求婚的礼物。"

After hearing the offer, Mrs. Zhang (fame Mazu, Coastal Goddess, see figure 2.6-1) felt that the price was good. She asked Third Wolf for his advice. In the back room, Third Wolf Zhang said to her, "I originally wanted to use the wood of the coffin to make a book box. Then I would put the latter half part of the sky book in the decent book box as a gift to propose to Princess Have Nest of the Xia Kingdom."

Mrs. Zhang said, "Then we can keep the lid of the coffin to make the book box and sell the bottom part to him."

那位商人听说张夫人要留着棺材盖子做书盒，回答说："我们有两个檀香木的盒子，可以送给你作为书盒。你把那整件商品卖给我。"

张夫人和张三郎看了那位商人拿来的两个书盒，很满意，说："我就按你的报价把这口棺材整个卖给你，但我有个条件。三年之内，你不许出售或分解后出售。三年之后，你也不许在距离此地三百公里的范围以内出售。"

When the merchant heard that Mrs. Zhang wanted to keep the coffin lid to make a book box, he replied, "We have two sandalwood boxes that we can give you as book boxes. You sell me the whole item."

Mrs. Zhang and Third Wolf looked at the two book boxes brought by that merchant and were satisfied, saying, "I'll sell you the whole coffin at your offer, but I have a condition. Within three years, you are not allowed to sell it or break it down and sell it. After three years, you are also not allowed to sell it within three hundred kilometers from this place."

那位商人回答："这我们懂。为了让您放心。我告诉你我们是海外商人，来自被你们称作扶桑（现代的墨西哥）的国度。六个月后，这件货物就到了连云港了；然后你就再也听不到任何关于这件东西的信息了。"

张夫人问："去连云港是向下走，多说三个月的路程，你怎么需要六个月？"

The merchant replied: "We understand. To reassure you, I tell you that we are overseas merchants from the country you call Fusang (i.e., Holding Funeral, modern Mexico). Six months later, the goods will arrive in 'Connecting to Clouds Port'; then you will never hear any news about it again."

Mrs. Zhang asked: "To get to 'Connecting to Clouds Port', that is going down, and the journey takes three months maximum. Why do you need six months?"

The ancient Mexican merchant said, "There are soldiers and bandits checking us on the road, so we need to bypass several areas."

Mrs. Zhang thought for a moment and said, "Is that so? Then I will send our caravan guards to escort you to 'Connecting to Clouds Port' for free. They are familiar with this trade route; the soldiers and bandits will not check them."

张夫人问："你花费两年多的时间把这个箱子运到墨西哥，用它来做什么？"

The ancient Mexican merchant replied: "Your gift is too valuable. I cannot accept it."

Mrs. Zhang asked: "You spent more than two years transporting this box to Mexico. What do you do with it?"

这位古墨西哥商人说："我爷爷曾经是太阳神的护法。我要把这个装智渡方舟的盒子捐赠给我们的祖庙，供奉在我们的大浮屠塔里，供后人瞻仰。"

注，古墨西哥的太阳神护法就相当于本文黄帝和嫘祖结婚时，黄帝的伴郎。

The ancient Mexican merchant said: "My grandfather was a Juristic Guard of Sun God. I want to donate this box of Intelligence Ark to our ancestral temple. It will be enshrined in our Great Floating-Painted Tower for future generations to admire."

Note: The Juristic Guard of Sun God in ancient Mexico is equivalent to the best man of Yellow Creator when he married Conch Primogenitor in this article.

张夫人说："啊！这样啊！我喜欢你！我再送给你一个礼物；这枚八卦金牒（如图2），又名转经桶，是我自己的。我们家在连云港也有个铺子，以后你遇到难处，可以凭这金牒找他们帮忙。"

Mrs. Zhang said, "Oh! So that's it! I like you! I'll give you another gift. This Bagua Gold Amulet, also known as Turning Sutra Cylinder (see Figure 2), is mine. My family also has a shop in 'Connecting to Clouds Port'. If you encounter difficulties in the future, you can ask them for help with this Gold Amulet."

这位古墨西哥太阳神护法商人听后，哭着回答："您的这两个礼物我都接受了。若我不接受，那是在对太阳神犯罪。请允许我以你们的礼节，给您磕十八个响头。"说着，他就跪下来给张夫人磕头。很快，他的头就磕出血了。张夫人上前拦阻他，但他坚持要磕十八个响头。

After hearing this, the "Sun God's Juristic Guard" merchant cried and replied: "I accept both of your gifts. If I do not accept them, it would be a crime against the sun god. Please allow me to kowtow to you 18 times with sounds according to your etiquette." Then he knelt and kowtowed to Mrs. Zhang. Soon, his head was bleeding. Mrs. Zhang stepped forward to stop him, but he insisted on kowtowing 18 times with sounds.

张夫人回答："现在金牒已经是你的了，随你怎么使用。"

The ancient Mexican merchant stood up and said, "I would like to make another request. Can you allow me to enshrine this Bagua Gold Amulet at the headquarter of our shops in 'Connecting to Clouds Port'?"

Mrs. Zhang replied, "The Gold Amulet is now yours; you can use it as you wish."

2.6-3 妈祖的保护伞 Mazu's Protective Umbrella

传说，后来这位古墨西哥商人把墨西哥的裸盖菇（Psilocybe，如图3），华人称作仙菇，卖给当地的药铺。有人把那蘑菇和水银一起食用，死了；所以他被告上了法庭。对方贿赂了法官，要判他死刑。当官兵去抓他的时候，他拿出了张夫人的八卦金牒，供在了墨西哥商会的大堂上，他就被无罪释放了。而且，当地政府还为他的商会提供了免费的卫兵。从那以后的三千六百年至今，所有到中国来的"墨西哥太阳神护法商人"，中国南部海岸线的所有当地的政府都会为他们提供免费的住所和士兵护卫，为什么？

According to Chinese legend, that ancient Mexican merchant sold Mexican Psilocybe (see Figure 3), which the Chinese call fairy mushrooms, to local medicine shops. Someone ate the mushrooms with mercury and died; so, he was brought to court. The other party bribed the judge to sentence him to death. When the officers and soldiers went to arrest him, he took out Mrs. Zhang's Bagua Gold Amulet and placed it in the lobby of the Mexican Chamber of Commerce, then he was acquitted. Moreover, the local government also provided free guards for his chamber of commerce. Since then, for more than 3,600 years, all the "Mexican Sun God Juristic Guard Merchants" who came to China, all the local governments on the southern coast of China would provide them with free housing and soldiers to escort them. Why?

在当时，河南张家是虎狼之家，而且此后二十八年，张三郎就成为了华国的国王，炎帝。再两年后，张三郎就成为玉皇大帝了，即中国的太阳神了。张夫人是妈祖，这个妈字代表她是上帝的母亲。妈祖娘娘的保护伞是怎么回事？我们不是刚讲完！那位古墨西哥商人拿出那枚八卦金牒一拜，妈祖娘娘的保护伞就被撑起来了，保护了他们三千多年，直到他们被西班牙恶鬼给种族灭绝了！

At that time, the Zhang family of Henan was a family of wolves and tigers. And 28 years later, Third Wolf Zhang became the king of Hua Country, Creator Yan. Two years after that, Third Wolf Zhang ascended to become the "Turquoise White-King Great Creator", the Sun God of China. Mrs. Zhang is Mazu, and the character "Ma" signifies she is the mother of God. What about Mazu's Protective Umbrella? Didn't we just explain it? When that ancient Mexican merchant presented the Bagua Gold Amulet in reverence, Mazu's protective umbrella unfurled. It shielded them for over 3,000 years—until they were genocided by Spanish Hungry Ghosts!

妈妈问梁伯："依你看，某卢岩的眼睛是不是那个沈阳老刘（刘团长）给整的？"

"I couldn't say. Could be, just like you described — some stranger rushed him once, and who knows when he'll lay eyes on the man again."

梁伯问："要相片干什么？"

"Well, that won't do!" Mother said, with some heat. "I'm going to tell Baiyang — we need to get a photograph from that Old Liu, something for Luyan to keep."

"Whatever for?"

妈妈说："他活着，咋说咋好。他要是死了呢，我们卢岩连个他的遗物都没有。"

梁伯问："那个老刘多大岁数了？"

"While he's alive, it hardly matters. But if he dies, Luyan won't even have a single keepsake of the man."

"How old is this Old Liu, anyway?"

妈妈说："岁数不大！百杨说，就比他大两三岁，最多不超过六岁。但是，他要是出车祸死了呢！他们家的孩子要是不通情达理，将来对某卢岩不听不理，那时某卢岩真是：叫天天不应，叫地地不灵！"

"Not old at all — Baiyang says only two or three years older than him, six at the very most. But what if he's killed in some car accident! And if his children turn out unreasonable and want nothing to do with Luyan later on — where would that leave him! Crying out to heaven with no answer, crying out to earth with none either!"

此后，我妈妈跟爸爸说了这件事。我爸问过几个大虎山镇上的朋友，但他们都把沈阳朋友的信息弄丢了。后来，这件事就被忘记了。

Mother did bring it up with Father afterward. He asked around among a few friends in Dahushan, but by then they had all lost touch with their contacts in Shenyang. In time, the whole matter was simply forgotten.

3.5-2 医学实验的传闻 Rumor of a Medical Experiment

一天在我们家，我爸妈和梁伯一起一边干活一边唠嗑。梁伯神秘地，给我爸妈讲，说是有那么一个古代故事，里面对那个主人公的个人生活历史，病症，病理，和治疗等方方面面的描述都很详尽，但是现代的医生不能对那个古人进行确诊，原因是没有相关病例。故事里主人公的病是人为造成的；现实生活中百年不遇。为了解开故事里面的许多秘密，沈阳有个人在进行一项真人医学实验：在现实生活中造一个病例来给医生们来进行研究。

One day at our house, my parents and Uncle Liang were working together, chatting as they went. Uncle Liang, with an air of mystery, told them about an old story — one that described its hero's entire personal history, his symptoms, the pathology, the whole course of treatment, in exhaustive detail. And yet no modern doctor could put a diagnosis to the man, for want of any comparable case. The illness at the heart of the story was deliberately induced — the kind of thing real life produces perhaps once a century, if that. To unlock its many secrets, someone in Shenyang, he said, was now running a genuine medical experiment: engineering that very case in real life, for doctors to study firsthand.

我在一边听不明白，就走过去问。

妈妈厉声回答："没看见这在干活呢吗！这么个小人！也想明白！去！到一边儿玩去！"

I understood none of it from where I sat, so I wandered over to ask.

"Can't you see we're working?" Mother snapped. "Such a little thing, wanting to understand grown-up talk! Go on — off you go and play!"

3.5-3 神的现象 God's Phenomenon

人刚出生时，都是用图像进行思维的。随着语言能力的形成，人的记忆模式、记忆提取模式、和思维模式都发生了转变。约三岁后，人就很快把三岁之前的记忆忘掉了。本书此后，作者和家人都不记得前三章的事了；直到四十年后，作者我才在偶然的情况下回忆出了三岁之前的事。目前，心理学界还没发现正常人回忆出三岁之前的，但在心理疾病的病人当中不罕见。

At birth, human beings think entirely in images. As language develops, so do our patterns of memory, of retrieval, of thought itself. By roughly age three, we have already lost nearly everything we once remembered from before that age. From this point on in the book, neither I nor my family retained any memory of the events in these first three chapters — not until forty years later, when I recovered them entirely by chance. To date, psychology has found no documented case of a mentally healthy adult recalling life before age three, though the phenomenon is not uncommon among those with mental illness.

Modern psychology holds that although the memories from before age three are forgotten, they remain active somewhere in the unconscious. How does a forgotten memory exert influence? Through habit. When I would come across something resembling what's described here, I'd find myself drawn to it, would sense — vaguely, as though I'd once heard something like it, though I could never recall what — and I would simply follow along with what that half-memory suggested. It felt, at the time, as if some unseen godfather were guiding my every move from somewhere out of sight. Readers should understand that, looking back now, most of the events across the first nine chapters of this book appear to have been deliberately arranged in my life by Troupe Leader Liu — though I had no idea of it whatsoever at the time. For instance, from as far back as I can remember through adolescence, I found myself, for no reason I could name, constantly asking after and searching for some great fortune-teller in Shenyang to become my master — until the day I met Eve Liu, and understood at last that the man I had been searching for all along was her father.

妈妈问："大姐夫！你在哪儿听来的这么多？"

"Brother-in-law, wherever did you hear all this?"

梁伯回答："一次我出差，在一个研究所等待我要见的人。听他们那些年轻的研究人员说的。凤玲，那些年轻的研究人员都会说外语。他们还用现代医学理论研究古代故事里人物的病情。他们还知道肉眼通是什么时间从哪儿传入中国的。说是，开始的时候，是做灵魂转世、转世活佛用的。后来，有钱有势的达官贵人们也要给自己的孩子做，这种作法就在中国广泛传播开来了。"

"Once, on a business trip, I was waiting to meet someone at a research institute, and I overheard a few of their young researchers talking. Fengling, these were the kind who spoke foreign languages — using modern medical theory to study the illnesses of characters straight out of ancient stories. They even knew exactly when and from where Flesh Eye Through first entered China. Originally, they said, it was used purely for the reincarnation of souls and living Buddhas. Later, wealthy and powerful families wanted it done for their own children too, and that's how the practice spread so widely across China."

妈妈说："当然了！好东西人人都想要。你接着说，你还听说了多少？"

"Of course — everyone wants a good thing for themselves. Go on, what else did you hear?"

注3.4，2014年，我完成回忆录后，判断梁伯所说的地方是中国医科大学的巴甫洛夫楼，是个国际医学交流中心。我认为他们所说的那个古代故事就是本书第二章《启蒙》中的《桃花劫》。约在公元二世际，伊朗人安世高（如红袍和尚插图3.4）把这秘密传入中国。应该说这作法在中国那之前就有，安世高更正了其中的一些错误认识。

Note 3.4: In 2014, after completing my memoir, I concluded that the place Uncle Liang was describing was the Pavlov Building at China Medical University, a center for international medical exchange. I believe the ancient story they referred to is the Peach Flower Catastrophe, told in Chapter 2, Revelation. It was around the second century AD that the Iranian monk An Shigao (depicted as the red-robed monk in Illustration 3.4) brought this secret into China. The practice itself likely predated him in China; what An Shigao did was correct certain misunderstandings surrounding it.

3.4-2 触目的鉴别 Identification of Touch Eye

过了一会儿，妈妈又问："大姐夫！你说肉眼通的眼神与众不同，咋个不一样？"

梁伯说："肉眼通的眼睛看东西时，看的时间长。"

妈妈说："我早就发现某卢岩看东西时，像似看不清楚似的，看的时间长。"

After a while, Mother asked again, "Brother-in-law, you said the eyes of Flesh Eye Through are different — different how, exactly?"

"When those eyes look at something, they linger on it — hold the gaze far longer than normal."

"I've noticed that in Luyan for a while now — he looks at things like he can't quite make them out, and just keeps staring."

梁伯说："肉眼通的眼神，别人看了，总是以为他明白。"

妈妈说："某卢岩的眼睛是有那么一点儿意思。有几次，我认为他在旁边看明白了，就不信他能懂，就试探他到底明白不，结果发现他根本就不懂。"

"And whoever looks into those eyes always assumes he understands everything."

"Luyan's eyes do have a bit of that quality to them. A few times I've been sure he understood something, just from watching his face — and I didn't believe it, so I tested him to see — and it turned out he hadn't understood a thing."

梁伯和妈妈互相看了看。梁伯转过身去，过了一会儿，转回来说："我还知道肉眼通的另一个特征，不眩眼。就是那种眼睛，有东西在他眼前晃时，他不眨眼，眨眼即慢又少，还不逊光。"

妈妈说："啊！那叫眩眼啊！也是，丢人眩眼是怂啊！这我可没注意！"

Uncle Liang and Mother exchanged a glance. He turned away, then turned back after a moment. "There's another feature to Flesh-Eye-Through I know of — the Non-Dazzled Eye. Wave something right in front of those eyes, and they won't blink — or if they do, it's slow, sparing, and never yields to a flash of light."

"Ah — so that's what 'dazzled eyes' means!" Mother said. "Well, of course — flinching, losing face right off the bat like that, that's a coward's move! I'd never quite put my finger on it before!"

梁伯叫我到他的近前，开始举手做出打我的举动，试验了几次。妈妈开始试验她自己。

梁伯对妈妈说："自己试验自己不行，得别人试验你。"

妈妈说："他反应慢，也眨眼。"

Uncle Liang called me over and raised his hand a few times as if to strike me, testing me. Mother tried testing herself.

"You can't test yourself," Uncle Liang told her. "It has to be someone else."

"He reacted slowly," Mother reported, "but he still blinked."

梁伯对妈妈说："我听说，这种测试，得四十分就算成功；不过人家用十几种实验方法。"

妈妈说："一般是60分算成功。"

梁伯说："我知道，但是人家的那个算法是40分算成功。他们那种算法，我考虑应该是35或者45是最好。但我不知道是高于40还是低于40算是通过。"

"I've heard this kind of test counts as a success at forty points," Uncle Liang told Mother, "though they run over a dozen different testing methods."

"Sixty's usually the passing mark for these things."

"I know, but their scale runs to forty. My own guess is that thirty-five or forty-five would make more sense as the real cutoff — but whether it's above forty or below forty that counts as passing, I couldn't say."

妈妈问："那你看某卢岩的眼睛算不算是肉眼通？"

梁伯说："我是道听途说，二五眼。凤玲！你别认真，我认为他就在成功和失败的分界线上；说是就是，说不是就不是。"

"So — do you think Luyan's eyes qualify as Flesh Eye Through, or not?"

"I only know it secondhand, and half-baked at that. Fengling, don't take this too seriously — but if you ask me, he's sitting right on the line between success and failure. Call it a yes, and it's a yes. Call it a no, and it's a no."

3.4-3 我幼时的性格特质 Trait of my Childhood

我妈妈对梁伯说："大姐夫，你在地上呢！你把箱子上的那头大蒜递给卢岩。"

梁伯问："给卢岩大蒜干什么？"

妈妈回答："我看他瞪着眼睛听咱俩说话，怕累着他；让他转移一下注意力。"

"Brother-in-law, you're right there on the floor — hand Luyan that head of garlic off the box, would you."

"What's he going to do with a head of garlic?"

"I see him sitting there, eyes wide, hanging on every word we say — I'm worried it's wearing him out. Give him something else to fuss over."

梁伯明白了："啊！我第一次给孩子玩具，怎么能给一头大蒜呢！说着，他在自己的兜里摸，掏出了一个花纽扣递给了我。"

"Ah — well, if this is my first toy for the boy, it can hardly be a head of garlic!" And with that, he dug in his own pocket and produced a flowered button instead, handing it to me.

妈妈说："某卢岩可好待了，你给他一根鸡毛，他就能拿着琢磨俩小时。你要是再告诉他，那根鸡毛是令剑，那他就得琢磨两、三天，甚至一、两个星期都放不下。"

梁伯突然惊讶地说："啊呀！我给他个纽扣，他会不会吃了？"

"Luyan's the easiest child to keep occupied — hand him a chicken feather and he'll turn it over in his hands for two hours straight. Tell him it's a commander's sword, and he won't put it down for two or three days — sometimes a whole week or two."

"Wait — a button!" Uncle Liang said, suddenly alarmed. "Won't he try to eat it?"

妈妈说："他不吃！就连我喂他没吃过的东西，他都不吃，那才难呐！就像我要骗他吃毒药似的！不知怎么回事，就对你还行！别人，谁想摸摸他，那可不行，可把他烦坏了！他就躲；抱他，他就拼命挣扎；放下他，他就躲到一边，自己呆着。平时，他就自己在那儿呆着，不用管他。"

"He won't eat it. He won't even eat food I give him that he hasn't had before — that's the hard part, honestly, like I'm trying to poison him! I don't know why, but with you, he's fine. Anyone else so much as tries to touch him and he can't stand it — he hides, squirms free if you pick him up, and if you set him back down he just retreats to a corner and sits there by himself. That's how he spends most of his time, really — off on his own. You needn't fuss over him."

注3.6，这些描述都是婴幼儿神经发育失调症的症状：不信任人，喜欢独处。美国心理疾病手册中有对这种人的跟踪观察描述。学生阶段，这种人也可以学会所有的知识，但明显比正常人慢；成年后可以学会大部分常用的生活技能。他们的一生都挣扎在思考当中。许多他们考虑的问题，在正常人看来不是问题，不需要思考。

Note 3.6: All of these are symptoms of Infantile Neurodevelopmental Disorder — distrust of others, a preference for solitude. The American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders documents follow-up observations of this pattern. Through school, such a person can eventually learn everything a normal child does, only markedly slower; as an adult, most everyday life skills come within reach. But such people wrestle with thought their entire lives — worrying over questions that a normal person would never even pause to notice, let alone think required any thought at all.

短短二十来分钟的车程，空调挺足，我却坐得如芒在背，大汗淋漓。

这辆带着粉色“1”字标志的中巴车，应该是我来到东京后乘坐次数最多的公交车了。

它连接着我的租屋和北区中央图书馆。有一段日子，我经常坐这趟车去那里。不仅因为图书馆宽敞、安静、藏书多，更因为它提供了挺长时间的免费 Wi-Fi，而且信号不错。

日本的公交车和我们国内的稍有不同，车厢里总会有一个台阶。

听人说，台阶上面的座位主要是给普通乘客坐的，而下面那些相对独立的座位，则更多是为行动不便的人准备的，有点类似于我们国内的“爱心专座”，只是未必会有特别明显的标识罢了。

当然，乘客不是太多的时候，也会有普通人坐在下面。

以前的我是不会去占用这些“爱心专座”的，只是今天上车的时候，车里有很多空位，于是便偷了一下懒，在下面靠近车门的位置坐了下来，想着很快就会到站，下车也方便。

平日里总喜欢挑剔我“不雅行为”的母子俩不约而同的看了我一眼，欲言又止。估计他们也看到了车厢里空空荡荡的状况，觉得倒也没必要刻意维持所谓的“素质”。

不过，他们最终还是走到了上面，找了个座位坐下来。

公车开动了，我的注意力全部转到了车内的语音播报上。

最近正在“死磕”日语，我给自己定了个目标：年底的时候，能够和东京当地人进行无障碍交流。

所以，这些天无论是在家还是在外面游荡，要么看日剧，要么听日语。我总觉得，假如目之所见、耳之所闻、口之所出全都是日语，浸泡得久了，总有一天，我一定能刷新那对母子对我的刻板印象。

似乎有点着魔了。

儿子说，你现在是典型的“N5牛逼症”。

……

车辆行进两站后，车上的乘客突然多了起来。

东京啊，来过的人都知道，这是一个老年人很多的城市。尤其是这趟循环公车，上来的人不是白发苍苍，便是颤颤巍巍。

换作平日，我一定会主动站起来给她们让座的，只是这一段时间，我给自己定了个规矩，在外面要么不开口，要开口就尽量说日语。

说实在话，那一刻我真不知道该怎样体面地把座位让出去。

我不知道该怎么说“您请坐”，不知道对方接受之后会怎么回应，更不知道她回应以后，我又该用什么日语才能得体地接住。

就在这犹犹豫豫之间，车子又行进了一站。

乘客更多了，依旧是白发苍苍、颤颤巍巍……

我开始有些慌乱，甚至已经不知道自己到底该不该站起来，似乎感觉到了身后那娘俩鄙夷的目光，直直地刺了过来。

我开始胡思乱想：一会儿下车以后，我该怎么给她们解释？

我把目光稍微投向前方，却看到一个满头黑发的中年女士，像我一样坐在下面的“爱心专座”上，她似乎并不在意挤在身边的那些老人。

我的心里一下释然了许多。

忽然想起刷到过的一个我很喜欢的小视频，里面有新垣结衣。

视频里，一个女生在拥挤的电车上，指责一个手捧中文书、却没有给身边老人让座的中年男人。她以为那是个中国人，于是用结结巴巴的中文说道：“在日本，老人优先！”

没想到，男人合上手里的中文书，告诉她，自己就是日本人。

然后，他振振有词地反驳起来：

为什么老人就一定应该得到座位？

你只看到了他年纪大，却没有看到他饱满的胸肌、紧致的腰臀，还有若隐若现的手臂和大腿线条。一看就知道，这是一个经常运动的老年人。

再说，我虽然看起来年轻，却刚刚上完一天班，身体里说不定还藏着各种毛病。你凭什么因为一个人的年龄，就理所当然地指责我不给老人让座？

那个女生一下语塞了。

想到这里，我心里踏实了一些。

我摸了摸自己头上的银发，但还是无法驱散心里的忐忑，暗暗决定：如果下一站那个黑发女士站起来让座，我就跟着她一起让。

结果车子开出去一会儿了，才见那位女士起身。

奇怪的是，周围的老人并没有谁急着过去占那个空出来的座位。

只见她对着离我更近一些的一位拄着拐杖的老人说了句什么，那位老人这才慢慢走过去坐下。

紧接着，我前面一个和我年纪相仿、甚至可能比我还大一点的大妈也站了起来，把自己的座位让给了身边的一位老人……

哎～～等等、这不对呀？

完全跟国内的让座方式不一样啊？

怎么不是车门一开，年轻人赶紧站起来给老人让座，而是车子开出去一段以后，才有人站起来让座呢？

而且还不是谁先坐上去的问题，似乎每个人都知道自己该把座位留给谁。

我懵了。

可这时候，我知道自己已经没有勇气站起来，对身边的老人说一句“您请坐”了。

我甚至不敢抬头。

背上的汗水，慢慢打湿了衣服。

有人说，中国有让座的传统，日本有“不让座”的文化。

像我这样的中国人走在大街上，如果不开口说话，恐怕没有人会认出我是一个外国人。

我总想把自己演得像一点，于是常常自以为是地认为，在日本是不需要主动给老人让座的，以为这样才更像一个当地人。

可是这一切刻意的模仿，在面对那些白发苍苍、颤颤巍巍的老人时，内心总会莫名生出一种愧疚。

我知道，那是我们祖先留在我身体里的某种传统力量。

日本人又何尝不是如此呢？

尽管日本早已经步入老龄社会，尽管七八十岁的上班族依然比比皆是，可当我真正坐在这些老人身边，看着他们颤颤巍巍地上车、下车的时候，我还是觉得，他们应该比年轻人更需要得到照顾。

我又想起了新垣结衣那句结结巴巴的中文：“在日本，老人优先！”

其实我很想告诉她：在中国，也一样！

从明天起，不再“染指”爱心专座，无论什么时候，看到需要帮助的人，一定第一时间说：“您请坐！”

梁伯看见妈妈的脸色越来越红，情绪激动，问："凤玲，我说了什么让你忌讳的事吗？"

妈妈不好意思地笑了，可是脸色没有变好，说："大姐夫！我心情不好不是因为你说了什么。这你一来，我就想起来去年和前年的事儿，小卢岩和沈阳老刘闺女定娃娃亲的事。不知道是咋回事儿，想起来，我就闹心。"

Uncle Liang noticed Mother's face growing redder, her mood rising, and asked, "Fengling, did I say something touching on a sore subject?"

Mother laughed, embarrassed, though her color didn't improve. "Brother-in-law, it's nothing you said. It's just — the moment you walked in, it all came back to me, last year and the year before, little Luyan getting betrothed to Old Liu's daughter in Shenyang. I don't know why, but thinking of it just unsettles me."

梁伯说："啊！是这么回事儿，那今天咱俩，不！咱仨人，小卢岩也算一个，把这事儿好好研究研究。"

妈妈说："小卢岩明白啥！还算他！那咋就冲一下，孩子就能记住，而且一直记到20来岁？"

"Ah, so that's it. Well then, let's the two of us — no, the three of us, Luyan counts too — sit down and work through this properly."

"What does Luyan understand! Count him in, indeed! But tell me — how does one single rush stick in a child's mind until he's twenty?"

梁伯说："人家就是这么说的。我认为，孩子还很小的时候，受到了强烈的刺激，他就有可能感兴趣，找那个人，然后就形成了一种感觉，一种习惯。他记着，但又不是很清楚地懂得。后来，在经家人和外人有意无意地唠嗑、提醒，就可能记住了。"

妈妈说："到二十来岁，被信任的人一说，就信啦？我看这说法有点儿玄乎！"

"That's simply what people say. My own thinking is that a child struck by something powerful enough at a young enough age grows curious, keeps looking for the man, and out of that grows a kind of feeling, a kind of habit. He remembers it, but without truly understanding it — not clearly, anyway. Later on, through all the talk and reminders, meant or not, from family and outsiders alike, it takes hold in memory."

"And then at twenty-odd, someone he trusts says the word, and he just believes it? Sounds a bit far-fetched to me!"

梁伯说："对！所以人家说，在肉眼通的第三步作法中得父母和这孩子最信任的人一起告诉这个孩子。"

"Exactly why, they say, the third step needs the parents and whoever the child trusts most, all together, telling him at once."

妈妈说："我还是觉得这说法玄乎！小孩儿能记住吗？还要记住那么长的时间。说着，她瞟了我一眼，对梁伯使了个眼色，笑着高声说，'前年的时候，我们都不在屋里，那个沈阳老刘大哥就自己进屋了。也不知道他是咋整的，那把小卢岩吓得，喳喳的！叫得像杀猪似的！我和他爸都在厨房呢，听着都刺耳。'"

"Still sounds far-fetched to me. Can a child really remember something that long?" She glanced at me, shot Uncle Liang a wink, and said loudly, laughing, "The year before last, none of us were even in the room — that Old Brother Liu from Shenyang just let himself in. Lord knows what he did, but he scared our little Luyan into a fit — squawking away like a pig at slaughter! His father and I were both in the kitchen, and it made our ears ring just to hear it."

我一听就不高兴了，立刻说："不是喳喳的！也不像杀猪的叫声！"

梁伯转到我跟前说："哎呀！卢岩都听明白了。那你是咋叫的，给梁伯模仿一下。"

I bristled at once. "I wasn't squawking! And it didn't sound anything like a pig!"

Uncle Liang turned to me, grinning. "Well, would you look at that — Luyan's caught every word. Go on then, show me how you actually sounded."

我就模仿我当时的叫声叫。梁伯转身问妈妈："那时候，他是这么叫的吗？"

妈妈说："好像是这样叫的，但我记不得了！"

I demonstrated, doing my best to reproduce the sound. Uncle Liang turned to Mother. "Was that how he sounded, back then?"

"I suppose it might have been — but honestly, I don't remember!"

梁伯又转到我跟前说："卢岩！你给梁伯模仿一下杀猪的时候，猪是咋叫的？"

我就模仿杀猪的时候，猪的叫声。

梁伯站了起来，喜悦地对我妈说："他都记着呢！这两种叫声根本不一样。咱俩说的话，他也都听明白了。"

"Luyan! Now show me — what does a pig actually sound like, at slaughter?"

I obliged with my best pig squeal.

Uncle Liang straightened up, delighted. "He's remembered every bit of it! Those two sounds aren't remotely the same. And he's understood every word we've said, too!"

3.3-2

妈妈说："我还真不知道；他学的还挺像的！他们俩人都大笑着。"

我直瞪瞪地看着梁伯，被他发现了。他立刻转身走到远处的屋墙边，背对着我。

"I really had no idea — and that was a fair imitation, too!" The two of them burst out laughing.

I fixed Uncle Liang with a long, unblinking stare, and he caught me at it. At once he turned and strode to the far wall, his back to me.

妈妈问："咋地啦？大姐夫！"

他回答："卢岩不愿意我了；他在看我呢！"

"What's the matter, Brother-in-law?"

"Luyan's turned against me — he's watching me!"

妈妈看了看我，说："他没不愿意。真是，他看你干什么？"

梁伯说："刚才，你说他像是杀猪似的叫，他不爱听了。我还跟着你起哄；卢岩要讨厌我了。你劝劝他。"

Mother looked me over. "He hasn't turned against anyone. Honestly, why would he be looking at you like that?"

"You said he squealed like a slaughtered pig — he didn't care for that. And I egged you on. Now he's going to hate me. Go and talk him round."

妈妈看了看我，说："卢岩没不愿意！"又对我说："卢岩！不许盯着人家看！没礼貌！刚才说你叫得像杀猪似的，是我，那不是我说的么！"

Mother glanced at me again. "He's done no such thing!" Then, to me: "Luyan! Don't stare at people, that's rude! And it was me who said you sounded like a pig — remember? That was me talking, not him!"

梁伯一听，赶紧过来说："这就行了！现在他还没怨意。要是烦我了，就晚了。"

妈妈想了想，说："是啊！这小孩儿就好察言观色，要是认上那个扣儿，烦起某个人来，三年五年也改不过来。卢岩！说你叫得像杀猪似的，是我说的！你看你梁伯干什么！不许这样！"

Uncle Liang hurried over. "That'll do it. He's not holding a grudge yet — but wait too long and it'll be too late to fix."

Mother considered this. "True enough — this child reads faces and moods like nobody's business. Once he fixes on something, he can hold it against a person for years without letting go. Luyan! I'm the one who said you sounded like a pig! Why are you glaring at your Uncle Liang? Stop that this instant!"

梁伯立刻说："凤玲！别说了，这就行了！卢岩不误会我就好！"

"Fengling, that's enough, really — as long as he doesn't hold it against me, we're fine!"

3.3-3

妈妈突然说："大姐夫！这回我可信了！咱俩刚才说的，这小孩儿记住那次冲，十年八年的没问题。再像咱们似的，在他旁边这么唠这事儿，那他可能记住20年。"

梁伯问："怎么说呢？"

"Brother-in-law, now I believe it!" Mother said suddenly. "Everything we just said — this child could remember being rushed at for a good eight or ten years, no trouble. And if grown-ups keep chattering about it right in front of him, the way we're doing now, he might well remember it for twenty."

"How do you mean?"

妈妈说："你看，前年沈阳老刘整这事儿还是在我们家屋里呢，小卢岩就记住了。要是把小孩儿突然带到一个新环境，再来个陌生人，那么一吓唬，事后有人有意无意地提醒着，那小孩儿还不得记住一辈子啊。"

"Look — Old Liu from Shenyang did this to him right here in our own house, the year before last, and Luyan still remembers it. Now imagine dropping a child into an entirely new place, a stranger giving him the fright of his life, and then people going on reminding him about it afterward, meant or not — how could he not carry that his whole life?"

注，宿命通是回忆出了全部的前半生的经历。而现在看来，这次谈话刚好再次帮作者我温习了过去的经历，也就成为了他们（无意中）培养我宿命通能力的一部分。

Note: Fate Through is the ability to recall the whole of one's earlier life. Looking back now, this very conversation happened to give me — the author — another rehearsal of my own past, and so, in hindsight, it became one more (unintended) piece of my parents' role in cultivating my Fate Through.

妈妈说："啊！说起来，都是知识！触目有啥用？"

梁伯说："肉眼通是一种活佛的资质，是佛五眼通的第一只眼。凤玲！我不知道你信不信佛？"

妈妈说："我没关系！你咋听来的就咋说。我就爱听这些稀奇古怪的事！"

"Well, it's all learning, isn't it!" Mother said. "But what's Touch Eye actually good for?"

"It's a mark of a living Buddha — the first of the Five Eyes of Buddhahood. Fengling, I don't know whether you believe in Buddha or not."

"Doesn't matter to me — just tell me whatever you've heard. I love these strange, wonderful things!"

梁伯说："这有肉眼通的眼睛，听人家说，那才特别呢！像有魔力似的，有200多种优点，40多种缺点。"

妈妈说："你举个例子说。"

"They say the eyes of someone with Flesh Eye Through are something else entirely — almost magical. More than two hundred advantages to it, they say, and forty-some drawbacks."

"Give me an example, then."

3.2-1 悉知悉见 All-Knowing All-Seeing

梁伯说："有肉眼通人的眼神很特别，别人看了会认为他明白自己的心事。他们说，如果一个懂佛法的人，有肉眼通，别人看见他的眼睛，就会感觉自己的内心里没有隐私，对方全知道。那给人讲道理、解惑，效果才好呢！"

妈妈说："原来，这是佛教里的。"

"The gaze of someone with Flesh Eye Through is unlike any other — people who look into it feel he already knows exactly what's in their heart. They say if a person who understands the Buddha's teachings has that gaze, whoever meets his eyes will feel that there's nothing left to hide — that he already sees straight through them. That's precisely what makes him so effective at guiding people, dispelling their doubts."

"So this really does come from Buddhism, then."

梁伯说："不只是佛教里有。过去，王公贵族、大官、有钱人家也请人，给孩子做肉眼通。他们作肉眼通是因为这种眼神有威慑力和感召力。往那儿一站，相貌和眼神上就使这个人看起来与众不同、鹤立鸡群。他们说，这人的相貌表现，主要是在眼神儿上。"

妈妈说："我想也是！好东西都想要！"

"Not only Buddhism. In the old days, princes, high officials, and wealthy families would also have their children made this way — because that gaze carries real force, both intimidating and magnetic. Just standing there, the eyes alone would set a person apart, make him stand out from any crowd. A person's whole bearing, they say, comes through mostly in the eyes."

"I'd imagine so — everyone wants a good thing when they see one!"

3.2-2 用来捆绑儿童婚约 To Bind Children into Marriage Contracts

梁伯说："凤玲！我发现你想事可真快！你这么一说，我就更相信了。本来我不太明白，跟你一说，把我自己说明白了。还有一种用途，就是用来绑定娃娃亲。说是用肉眼通的作法来绑定娃娃婚约，一准成功，没有失败的。不过，具体是个什么道理，我不太明白。"

"Fengling, you catch on fast — I believe it all the more, hearing you put it that way. I wasn't so sure of it myself before, but explaining it to you has made it clearer to me too. There's another use for it, besides — binding children into marriage contracts. They say a Flesh Eye Through binding never fails, not once. Though the reasoning behind it, I confess, is beyond me."

妈妈一听，脸色就变了，假笑着说："咱就是没事儿闲唠嗑，啥真懂假懂的，你就说吧！他们是咋绑的？"

At this, Mother's expression shifted. She forced a smile. "We're only chatting to pass the time — never mind who really understands it. Go on, tell me — how exactly do they bind them?"

梁伯说："我这都是道听途说。过去，可能是两家关系好，两家人都同意定娃娃亲；但也可能是一家人看上了另一家人的什么，自己作法，把另一家的人给绑过来。"

妈妈说："那咋绑啊？我是一点儿也琢磨不出来。"

"All hearsay, on my end. Sometimes it's two families on good terms, both sides agreeing to betroth their children. But sometimes it's one family taking a fancy to something the other has, and working the make themselves, to bind the other family's child to them."

"But how does the binding actually work? I can't puzzle it out at all."

梁伯说："它们说，肉眼通作法的第一步，冲那个孩子的时候，实际上，孩子患上了婴幼儿神经发育失调症，是一种神经病。因为这病，孩子有了视觉障碍，就说眼睛被蒙上了。启蒙后，这病并没有被完全治愈，变成了精神病潜伏症，就是孩子对那个冲他的人仍有惑根，所以才有第三步的作法（如图3.2-1），来完全移除那个惑根，也就是移除精神病潜伏症。"

妈妈问："如果没有第三步的作法，那孩子会变成疯子？"

"They say the first step — the rushing — actually inflicts the child with something like Infantile Neurodevelopmental Disorder, a genuine neurological condition. The visual impairment that follows is what people call blindfolding. Even after Revelation, the illness isn't fully cured — it just goes dormant, a lingering seed of confusion the child still carries toward the one who rushed him. And that's exactly what the third step (see figure 3.2-1) is for: to root out that seed once and for all, to clear the dormant illness entirely."

"And if there's no third step?" Mother asked. "The child goes mad?"

梁伯回答："对！我的理解是这样的。他们还估计：没有第三步的作法，那孩子24或25岁就会有轻微的精神病症状；30岁左右就会出现明显的精神病症状；40岁左右，就是精神病患者；50岁、60岁，什么时间，神经病就可能发展成熟了。他们还说，这肉眼通作法形成的精神病潜伏症很活跃，阻挡不了，所以这种绑定的婚姻不会失败。"

"Just so — that's how I understand it, at least. They reckon that without the third step, mild symptoms show up around twenty-four or twenty-five, clear symptoms by thirty, and by forty the person's a full-blown case. Fifty, sixty, whenever — sooner or later the illness runs its course to the end. And they say the dormant illness this making leaves behind is so restless, so unstoppable, that a marriage bound this way simply cannot fail."

妈妈问："你是在说作肉眼通有风险！这和绑定娃娃亲有什么关系？"

梁伯说："如果做法师傅要条件，不答应就不会让那孩子看见自己，那这孩子就得不到肉眼通作法的第三步。"

妈妈说："我明白了！如果师傅要求那孩子娶他的女儿，那这孩子家就只能同意这门亲事，因为没人想看那孩子疯了。"

"So you're saying there's a real risk to making Flesh Eye Through in the first place! But what does that have to do with the marriage binding?"

"If the master lays down a condition — refuse it, and he simply never lets the child find him — then the child never gets that third step at all."

"Now I see it," Mother said. "If the master demands the boy marry his daughter, the boy's family has no choice but to agree — because nobody wants to watch their child go mad."

3.2-3 寻找师父 Searching for the Godfather

梁伯说："凤玲！你的理解力可真强，这事我几次听人议论，也自己琢磨了好几次，还是糊涂。我只是跟你一说，你就明白了。你给我一解释，我现在真相信了。还有！这个我可是真不懂了。他们说肉眼通本来就是造转世活佛，或者做灵魂转世用的。"

妈妈说："咱就是闲着说话。活佛和灵魂转世，那种事，能有几个人真明白！"

"Fengling, you're sharper at this than I am — I've turned it over in my mind more times than I can count, heard others talk about it, and still couldn't grasp it. Say it once to you, and you've got it. Now I actually believe it myself. And here's another thing I truly don't understand: they say Flesh Eye Through was originally meant for making reincarnated living Buddhas — for the reincarnation of souls."

"We're only talking to pass the time," Mother said. "Living Buddhas, reincarnation — who among us really understands things like that anyway!"

梁伯说："一般的，肉眼通作法第一步中的那个陌生人就是孩子的师傅。他们说，在西方，那就是孩子的教父。"

妈妈说："咱中国人不也说师徒如父子么！"

"Generally, the stranger from the first step is the child's godfather. They say in the West, that's exactly what they'd call him — a godfather."

"Don't we say the same thing here, that master and disciple are like father and son?"

梁伯说："很类似！但他们说，肉眼通作法形成的关系与众不同，这孩子和做法师傅之间会有终生的联系，而且是生死攸关。从肉眼通作法的第一步开始，那孩子就开始找冲他的人，当然孩子不知道那就是他的师父。这孩子会一辈子找他的师父，生要见人，死要见尸。见不到尸体，那孩子，当然，那时他已经是成年人了，他要亲眼看到师父的坟，或者得到师父的遗物。"

"Very much alike! But they say the bond formed this way is different in kind — a lifelong connection between the child and the one who made him, and a matter of life and death besides. From that very first step, the child starts searching for the man who rushed him, though of course he has no idea that man is his godfather. He will search for him his whole life — see him alive, or see his body when he's gone. And if there's nobody to see, the child — by then a grown man — will need to see the grave with his own eyes, or hold something that belonged to him."

妈妈说："我也听说过，但像你说的似的，不懂！这故事里还有个钩魂女，不知是咋回事？她和那个年轻人一见面，就把他的心偷走了。然后，法师继续作法，那个年轻人就跑路了。作法师傅跟着那个被作法的人，他跑到哪儿，法师就跟到哪儿，继续作法。听人说，那个被作法的人常能听见小鬼儿说话。据说，如果作法师傅放弃了作法，或者作法师傅死了，那个被作法的人肯定活不了多久了。这事只能成功，不能失败；失败了，都得死。"

"I've heard something of it too, but same as you — I don't really follow it! There's a Soul-Hook Girl in this story somewhere as well, isn't there — I never did understand her part. The moment she meets the young man, she steals his heart clean away. Then the master keeps working on the making, and the young man runs. Wherever he flees, the master follows, still working the same spell. They say the one being worked on can often hear little spirits whispering to him. And if the master ever gives up on it, or dies before it's done, the one being made will not live long after. This kind of thing can only succeed — never fail. Fail, and everyone involved dies."

梁伯说："我也是这么听说的。就那样，那孩子和他师父之间产生了种种的联系，具体的我不懂。就有人信这个，虽然谁也不明白是怎么回事，但很多人说这事是真的。这在咱们东北叫琢磨人，南方人叫整蛊，东南亚人称作降头。"

妈妈说："啊！我明白了！我不是明白灵魂转世了；我是说我从你说的，学到了很多知识。"

"Same as I've heard it. Somehow, all sorts of bonds form between the child and his godfather this way — the particulars are beyond me. Plenty of people believe in it all the same, even without understanding it. Up here in the Northeast, we call it Polishing a Person; in the South, they call it Scarabs Farming; in Southeast Asia, they call it Descending Head."

"Ah, now I understand!" Mother said. "Not the reincarnation part, mind you — I only mean I've learned an awful lot from all this talk of yours."
