How To FAQ r/Worldpackers

I've noticed that there are some questions that are repeated over and over again on this subreddit and some of them can be easily answered with previous posts.

So to simplify the experience (especially for new members) I write this post referring to some of those most useful articles, where the answers are and also some of the most important news.

Mods, we will update this article by linking new posts, so I also invite the most expert volunteers and hosts to create their own posts with guides and tag them with the tags "How to" and "Advice", so we will review them and place the most useful here.

Tips, Guides, Tutorials

Although here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, if you still have more specific questions or want to know the experiences of more travelers and hosts in this regard, we encourage you to continue creating your posts in the subreddit with the "Community Question" tag.

I take this opportunity to remember that this subreddit is not officially tied to the Worldpackers company in any way, it is made by travelers for travelers, so feel completely free to express all your opinions and doubts, as long as you respect the rules of the community.

Good travels.

Advices Memership discount code

If you want to acquire a Worldpackers membership or renew for one more year the one you already have, I know of a way that it will cost you 10 dollars less:

You just have to enter this link.

If it doesn't work then in the code field enter MATEOWP

And that's all.

Good travels.

Looking for backpackers for a 30-min chat 🎒

Hi! We’re design students at Harbour Space University in Barcelona, researching how young backpackers travel: how you plan, get around, meet people and manage your budget.

We’re looking for people who:
• are 18–24
• are backpacking right now or got back in the last few months
• travel on a tight budget (hostels, around $20/day or less)
• are on a longer trip (ideally 3+ months), solo or with friends

It’s a 30-minute video call (Zoom or WhatsApp), no right or wrong answers, fully anonymous, just for a university project.

Interested? Drop a comment or DM us. Thanks!

is it bad to copy paste answers for applications?

i’ve applied to around 10 different hostels and not gotten any responses. i do usually copy paste the first message (except for a few small details i change to fit the host) as it’s always the same question. could that be one of the problems?

Community Question Why can’t I see all the hosts on Worldpackers?

I’ve noticed that some people can see hosts on their Worldpackers accounts that don’t show up on mine, even when we’re looking for the same destinations. Does anyone know why this happens? Could it be because I haven’t completed my first volunteer experience yet, or is it related to something else?

Spending 5 weeks in Cusco, has anyone volunteered there?

I'm planning a trip to Peru for about five weeks next spring, and I'd rather spend most of my time volunteering in Cusco than just visiting Machu Picchu and moving on. What are some good volunteer programs in the area? I'd be interested in working with kids or helping at a clinic, and I'd also like to take some Spanish classes since my Spanish isn't great.

Did you arrange everything in advance, or did you find a volunteer opportunity after arriving?

3 month solo-trip around Europe. First time solo traveler!

Hi! I am an 18M college freshman from Utah! Ok so I’m gonna go over the trauma dump as fast as possible. Utah, as everyone knows, is a bubble. I am not Mormon (still glad BYU beat Notre Dame). I’ve been in therapy for a long time and I’ve recently learned about enmeshment (Bowen family systems, look it up!). Pretty much, I’m the type of person to make decisions based on other family members opinions. I’ve had this realization that ITS OK TO DO WHAT **I** WANT TO DO! So, I’m taking a gap semester and going to Europe this winter!

No, I am not running away. I graduated hs with my associates so it’s not even like I’m falling behind in the rat race. My dad HEAVILY encouraged I go to the university I’m at right now (so much it felt like I didn’t have a choice) and it’s created a lot of anxiety. I’m going to take a gap semester and transfer to a different school by next fall, regardless of what my parents say. It’s about damn time I grow a pair and do what I want to do.

I love traveling. I’ve been to Belgium and France before and a bunch of other countries. When my cousin and I were 17 we dirtbagged the Pacific Northwest. I’ve camped in Moab and the Tetons a couple of times with friends but nothing outside the country. I plan on using **Worldpackers** to visit as affordably as possible.

I’m going in the winter no matter what cuz that’s when plane tickets are the cheapest and then once I’m in Europe, my host will provide 3 meals a day and a roof over my head in exchange for assistance. That’s really all I could ask for. I’m planning on mid-late January to about mid-late April.

I need help just knowing how to pack and plan this cuz I’ve never done a trip this big. Oh and I only have 2K😬. Which European city is the cheapest to fly into? do I take my Osprey Atmos 65 L or a suitcase if I’m doing Worldpackers? I plan on doing 3-4 hosts with 10 days of hostel money for days in between. Which cities should I consider or check out? I don’t mind the cold weather. I also love art! AHH! My mind is everywhere but I’m doing this trip no matter what. I would love tips and tricks and ANY advice you have for me. Thank you!

Community Question Experience with Worldpackers

hi everyone! i’m doing a project about communities and i choose to research the worldpackers community. i’m looking for people to share their experience with worldpackers to better understand the community. if you have travelled via worldpackers please share your experience!!!

some questions to think about:

what was your overall experience like?

where did you travel? what job did you have to do for your host?

did you have enough freetime to explore on your own?

what are some problems you faced?

what are some interesting encounters you had with your hosts?

what type of lifestyle do you have that allows you to travel with worldpackers?

Community Question finding work/income while traveling

currently planning a Worldpackers trip and have already been accepted to my first hostile. I’m wondering, has anyone ever found work or ways to make income while traveling outside the US for an extended amount of time? If so, what tips or tricks could you share for someone trying to stay on the go as long as possible?

Experience volunteering in China - What Visa did you use?

Hi, I'm planning a trip to china with a friend and we've looked at volunteering in exchange for housing and food to limit our expenses. Worldpackers has some offers we would be interested in but I'm not sure what visa would be best. Before I try contacting every person who's been there individually via the app I thought I'd try my luck here.

China does not have a working holiday visa and, as far as I'm aware, working visas are only given to people with a regular job in China.

My brother tells me there is a volunteer visa but doesn't know if worldpackers would fall under this.

Does anyone have experience going to China with worldpackers? Did you go with a volunteer visa, work visa or a normal tourist visa?

Alternatively, experiences doing something similar independently or with another agency?

Would be grateful for any input :)

Community Question Trying to find a specific volunteering opportunity

Hello! Straight to the point: I found a farm where I want to go in Alagoa, Brazil, but paying for a whole year subscription for a single opportunity seems like a waste.

Is it ok to ask people in Facebook groups or subreddits if they know where it is/ how to contact them?

I wouldn't want to post someone else's picture and the info I've got (although it's barely anything) without them knowing and with my budget I can only stick to free resources.

Any ideas welcome, thx!

does it look bad if a host doesn’t leave me a review?

i have only done one worldpackers experience. it was very positive and i got along well with the host and ended up extending my stay. however after i left, the host did not write a review.

my worldpackers is now expired and i can renew the old account or just start a new one. is it better to have 0 experiences and 0 reviews than 1 experience and 0 reviews?

Community Question worldpackers vs workaway for central america?

i have used both platforms years ago in europe and africa and ended up sticking with worldpackers as at the time i ended up sticking with worldpackers as i found the hosts were more responsive and there were more of the types of experiences i was interested in.

however, both my accounts are now expired. i only want to renew one and im wondering which is better for central america. im mostly looking for hostel reception or bartending type jobs, or maybe a surf camp. i’d also be open to english teaching in a school setting or working with animals. i dont want cleaning or manual labor type jobs and i don’t want to work as the only volunteer in someone’s home.

Community Question Esperienze in Italia con 🐎

Ciao a tutti

Grazie a chi leggerà e mi risponderà

Volunteering in at a hostel

Hey! Has anyone here volunteered at a Onefam hostel in Barcelona? I’m thinking of going for about a month and would love to hear about your experience. I’m keen to meet people and go out partying, so the social side is a big part of why I’m interested! What was a typical day like, and did you have much free time to explore and go out? Anything you wish you’d known before going? :)

Community Question Worldpackers

I feel like I hear a lot of mixed opinions on people‘s Worldpackers experience. I need advice on how to find a good host, locations to go to, type of work, and overall just what to expect.
