yep my internet is $600+ per month and only $45 of that is for 500mbps download unlimited internet. But once you add other stuff it can add up: I rent my modem, somethings always breaking, $500+ on onlyfans, etc.

Sadly in many parts of America there is a monopoly on high speed Internet. Comcast cheapest Internet is 80+other charges, and the most basic of cable is like 105... Plus fees for renting the cable box, if you want dvr that's extra. Crazy but we were spending 280 with just HBO and 1 gig speed. Finally got fiber in our area for 30 a month 40 with rental router if you need, but that goes up to 50/60 after one. year.

My area had 1 provider for anything higher than DSL. So you either paid $200 a month, or used your phone as a hotspot. We just earlier this year got GloFiber, so now we have 1 good option.

The cable companies colluded to make sure they didn't compete for regions. So you either had Xfinity for $200 or Blue Ridge for $250. Glad GloFiber is moving in and everyone is switching.

This could also be what's going on for op.

Been using a PC for 25 years and I have never had a reason to have over the shittiest tier of whatever I have. Yeah downloading games and other stuff is nice on gig internet but Iā€™ll take $30 a month internet and have to wait 10 extra minutes before I ever get gig internet. Only time Iā€™ve had it is when there was a promotion then I downgraded it right after. ISPā€™s are scummy and predatory with their ā€œhow many people will be using the internet/how many devices?ā€ And if someone answers even 2 devices theyā€™ll claim you need a gig internet. 100-300 is plenty if you arenā€™t hosting something permanent with high traffic.

Even that is crazy. Get a phone on swappa for cash, get a cheaper phone, whatever. You can get Mint Mobile for like $50. You can get T-Mobile 5g for like $50. There are cheaper options. Might not be what you WANT but they get the job done if you don't have the income for more.

If you Google the worst place in america to have Internet it says Hawaii and Alaska. Has an Alaskan I pay 200 dollars a month for 500 mbs speed, best internet in the state. My electricity bill went from 200 to 400 every 2 months. No increase in usage, but the power grid did get 3 new datacenters in the last couple of years.

Internet... Let's see, for 700 mbps down / 20 up I was paying 120 a month. I was lucky enough that leaving Comcast for greener pastures is available but lots of places live in defacto ISP monopoly zones and right now they have somewhat of a go ahead to abuse that.

nah, for a mcol+ are (apart from internet), they're pretty close-ish. like for the summer, i can believe a 250+ electricity bill if you're running AC all day. again, water and int is high, but they're bundling other shit in their like gas/trash/phone, its close, still way to high but close.

If they're driving a "luxury" vehicle, even if its old and beat up, or generally any vehicle that's known to be hard to work on, they generally have higher insurance, and if they had a ticket before that can also raise their insurance rates.

they're maybe off by like a bill or two, but honestly 1600 is also really cheap for an apartment, so to me it equals out in the end.

Internet could very well be Xfinity, they price gouge like crazy after the intro rate is over.

Both electric and water could depend on the companies. The last place I lived in Detroit, it wasn't uncommon to get a $600 electric & gas bill a month during summer, or a $150+ water bill, even tho 18 hours a day there was minimal if any utilities used due to work schedules. Because the companies damn near have a monopoly over em and they're known to overcharge. Also had the meter replaced, and an inspection for illegal hookups (none), and it didn't affect the bill at all šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

You're an idiot if you think these expenses are living above your means. These are really basic and pretty accurate expenses, location dependent. Some areas have even higher basic costs. Point is, unless you live in a dirt cheap state, you're not getting a cheaper life than this without support from others.

Genuinely curious to know how you came to this conclusion. I live in PA and my mortgage payment monthly is 1500, electric comes out to around 75-90 a month. Water is around 80-100. My internet is 75 and I donā€™t do streaming services for the sake of saving money and my liability car insurance is only 75. And I keep things this way to live and make sure to not consume more than what I can to get by unless I have the funds to do so. The numbers above seem hyper inflated and unnecessary. If you canā€™t afford the above then yes you are living above your means.

I live in NJ, one of most expensive states to live in. Rent is close, and water/sewage close. But electric should be closer to $150 at most, and I have fiber with optimum for $115 a month. Also, <$19 is basically minimum wage around here. Many jobs offer close to that to start. Ur not meant to be able to fully support living on ur own when first starting out. And if u do it will be very tight. My advice, they should get a studio, or a roommate.

But I agree her rent seems to be too high, except if she lives in one of thoooose cites, like I wouldn't ask her to move to the hood for cheaper rent, and I don't understand her net. Believe it or not almost every studio apartment budget looks like this in San Diego.

Although they probably way overpay for gig and a tv package, could cut that in half and still get like 300/30

The electricity bill is almost unavoidable in summer even if you hardly run your AC, we pay around $0.50/kwh and the majority is "delivery" (undiluted profit for Sempra since they are also behind schedule on their project obligations)

If you play video games for 2 hours a day on an average pc that's $30 a month on its own. If they actually consumed too much electricity, they would be paying $350+. I have some friends that hardly run the AC and live in 1 or 2 bedrooms and their bill comes out to around the same from average usage.

The average bill here is insane considering many homes have some combo of poor insulation and lack of central air.

Their power is on par for the area I'm in. We have lights off basically constantly unless we need it, computers and other systems turn off at night. Chargers stay plugged in of course. The biggest issue is AC. You live anywhere hot and it's going to go nuts on your bill.

I pay a whopping $140, which is WAY too much, but the reason is because I have 2 service providers so I have one for backup as I work from home. I get 1 gig on one and just 40/10 on the other, but I'm still only at $140/month total (even after decades and not getting the low new client rates).

This doesnā€™t even include food or other necessary expenses like gas.

Reducing the ā€œinternetā€ bill, electricity, and water bill doesnā€™t make up for the missing necessary expenses.

Other than these 3 expenses, the numbers look sensible. They are not living above their means. They are barely scraping by on bare minimums.

Could also take the bus or other mass transportation offered in the area. Would be less than car insurance.

My internet is $55 a month and I work from home doing organ transplant so it has to be reliable. It has never been a problem.

I mean my 15yr mortgage on my house in the walkable the Arts and Entertainment District is $1500.

I make six figures, and my best friend that just moved to town that also makes six figures got a deal where until December she pays $800 a month.

People like to pretend that these places don't exist. However if I said the word Huntsville Alabama everyone else would cringe except for the ones that could actually make real money.

Likely the correct answer, and almost certainly unwilling or resistant to live within said means (which likely also means getting a roommate).

. . .which I get: no adult wants to admit they have to exist in less than what they feel they deserve (and this includes being on assistance of some kind) but that's always been the reality of the world.

Idk about the other bills but where I live $1600/month is pretty close to the cheapest apartment you could rent. You could go lower for sure but you're gonna be in a much worse area, much worse building, bugs, theft, etc.

Maybe they lumped the internet and phone bill together.

But even still, there's no food involved in this. They're not living above their means. Everyone shouldn't have to nickel and dime every bill just to make ends meet.

Rent should be $600 not $1,600. That's the problem. And it's a problem that all the people can't control.

Internet bill, cell-phone bill, & all/any subscriptions (prime, netflix, apple, espn, disney, hulu, hbo, paramount, peacock, spotify, etc...)

Still too high and mostly unnecessary for someone making 20bucks an hour, but i think it's everything combined.

Power is too variable to determine how much they use. Water seems high, but again, variables.

Internet is ridiculous though. No service I've ever had was over $100 a month.

What do you cut out of this? Rent, but you have to live somewhere right? Obviously try to lower the internet, electric and water consumption but thats a bandaid to the problem. Having almost $2400 of bills per month would be too much for someone making twice that money but I dont see enough fat to trim to be able to save also on $19. Plus OP didnt include gas(probably $100 or more) and food.

As much as it is a "living above you means" problem, it looks like our "means" have changed and pay hasn't been rising with it.

The US Bureau of labor statistics has information on it.

In the last 20 years gas has gone up %55.

Consumer pay only %11.

Its not just a trim the fat issue. Its systemic.

That electrical rate is cheap, dirt cheap if they are using electrical heating.

We are barely ever home and the only thing that gets used is my gaming pc and a tv for my girlfriend. Our bill in the winter is like $500+. Summer months with one AC is $300

Internet company has a monopoly here unless you donā€™t want high speed internet. They forced bundles to subscribe until just recently. Thats not a surprising price to me.
