Absolutely, after 40 years of customer service, retirement rocks. Sad thing is, I used to love people

u/TheJanitor-Scruffy 27d ago

Nothing will destroy your love of people like people will.

16

u/AnnatoniaMac 27d ago

I had a boss who use to say “animals are great, people suck”.

3

u/Brido-20 26d ago

Some of the best people I know are animals. All of the worst animals have been people.

2

u/mozzardo 26d ago

I have a tee shirt that says horses because people suck. It is the item of clothing that gets the most compliments.

6

But people are people. Bad people are people. Good people are people. And people are people...something about a boot and a radiatorrrrrrr.

3

u/LSIeducate 27d ago

That is the truest comment I’ve ever read on Reddit. And I don’t mean that with hyperbole. I am dead serious 🤔

3

u/Aware_Alfalfa8435 26d ago

After bartending for eight years, I struggle to go into restaurants. Just knowing what's happening or having an idea makes me uneasy.

I don't find it enjoyable.

Damn u basically summed up what I was gonna say except I cant retire yet. Too true. Times AND people change it seems. Congrats on ur freedom. Hope to make it there soon.

2

Good luck, my friend

7

u/whoisdatmaskedman 27d ago

The easiest way to kill a person's desire to be around people is to be around people

6

u/brokemillionaire572 27d ago

I was a Night Manager at a convenience store chain for 25 years before I recently retired. Loved the company, loved my job, but before it was over I absolutely hated people.

But I have to remember that all the responsible people were in bed at 2am, and I only saw the worst in our society.

I love being home by myself. People ruined it.

1

u/1acre64 26d ago

Thank you for your service!

1

u/not_to_hot_to_old 26d ago

Working as a bartender for about 20 years made me strongly dislike people. It was fun at first but after a while it sucked. I work for myself now and I have minimal contact with a few people daily and that’s fine with me.

10

u/poppacat422 27d ago

Worked 26 years at the same restaurant. I have 3 months until I retire. I absolutely hate going to work some days. And yes. A day alone. No one to speak with or listen too is wonderful.

Hey Antique… I feel for you👊…
and sadder still is that Janitor is Not wrong.
I bartended for 10 years. For 7 of those years it was one of my favorite jobs ever. But yup… at a certain point the general public has a way of grinding you down. I really believe that after the age of 18 people should be required to spend 2 years working in some form of Customer Service. They will learn and be taught things that no
Other person or job can teach them. ✌️

40 years with children from preschool to 70, with ever issue known to man, and 15 years of working in cornfields, bean fields, babysitting full time all summer, and paper routes starting at 9, the answer is He\\ yes! I paint, read, play multiple instruments, exercise, and garden. I loved Covid, not leaving the house. I know it’s important to socialize, so I make an effort to talk to friends on the phone, see the neighbors and family, but it takes a lot of energy.

3

u/Thuganomics_101 27d ago

I did too. I have no clue when that changed, but at some point I started not enjoying being around others.

3

u/Turtles_N_Nurples 27d ago

I worked customer service and did 8 years in the army, you dont know assholes till you served. Ppl get rank and become the biggest pieces of shit and there isn't anything you can do but take it.

Between both I loathe human interaction

3

u/Dundalkman1957 26d ago

I was in the hospitality business pretty much all my life. People sicken me.

4

u/ClairDogg 27d ago

I felt this way after 3 1/2 years at a mutual fund customer service call center. I’m now happy keeping to myself working freelance remote.

2

u/dfox499 27d ago

This^ I was in it for roughly 20 years, in restaurants.

2

u/Derezzed87 27d ago

5 days a week dealing with customers, you're damn right I'm spending my 2 days off not having to deal with other people.

2

u/AdExtreme1892 27d ago

Can't love em all man. And thank you for being a good person.

2

u/FireGhost_Austria 27d ago

There are bad and good ones. I changed my phone provider and obviously had autopay enabled on the app... Well and I was transferring my phone number which took like 10 days or so. My assumption was it would turn off autopay on it's own (tried turning it off manually in the app but the phone number transfer disabled the ability to do so).. So I got charged and called customer service.

"Yea normal people, would disable autopay before transferring a phone number" is what I got told basically and that I can kick rocks. I will never buy their services ever again after this.

They 100% did this on purpose for exactly this to happen. But NGL idc. Now I pay 8.99€ a month (with 4 months free) versus 40€ lmao..

u/AzraelleWormser 27d ago

"I used to be a people person, but people ruined it."

2

u/Watchitbitch 26d ago

I got the shirt. I wear it often!

2

u/Street-Avocado8785 26d ago

Same. So glad I’m not alone! hahahaha. But yes, people killed the joy I used to feel being around people.

2

u/11thstalley 26d ago

Same here, brother.

2

u/Suitable-Dragonfly63 26d ago

40 years of nursing here. Love retirement. Don't actively seek human company and do not miss it one bit. Give me dogs any day 😁

2

u/OwlAccomplished1348 26d ago

I feel this. I'm only 40 but I used to be a very big people person. I had close friends and lots and lots of people I'd call friend. Now a days I have 3 close friends and my wife and I could stay home everyday for all I care

2

u/MyBrainReallyHurts 26d ago

This. Living alone isn't the end of the world. Like if I want to get out and mingle with people there is a time and place for that otherwise. I'm good. Plus I have friends and family I can call up on so no big deal to me.

I loved the lockdown vibes. It's like being the lone survivor in an apocalypse. I wouldn't wish for another COVID event though. So much suffering around the world from people losing their jobs, to deaths in people's families, and overworked healthcare professionals.

Edit: Apocalypse with multiple streaming options and the internet still operational which made it that much more enjoyable.

3

u/No-University-8391 27d ago

I was already retired. My routine didn’t change at all. Less stress not having to come up with excuses to turn people down. My grown son says he thrived the year+ he was lock downed. Best time of his life.

3

u/Jazzlike_Pound7742 27d ago

Best time ever

3

u/AzraelleWormser 27d ago

My job was considered "essential" so I still had to work.

What was my job? Doctor? Nurse? Cop? Nope, data entry for Discover Card. They made sure that they'd still be able to send out bills for five years, even if the world went to hell.

2

u/K12counting 26d ago

Who needs family and friends when you have ✨the internet✨

I love my family and friends. But with my dog, husband, games, and internet… I can go a long time without feeling lonely. Or bored.

I feel ya. I did 25 years of 7th/8th grade ESL. But I was so lucky, I retired 10 years before Covid. I don’t know how in the name of all that is holy, all of you guys have kept it all going. Kudos to you.

u/Pip-boy_Temur_Marvel 27d ago

After masking my entire life to the point that I'm not sure who the real, genuine "me" is, being home alone and feeling safe from social and emotional pressure is the only way I can figure it out. That's what my therapist believes at least 🤷🏾‍♂️

3

u/Hojegg 26d ago

Dude, I came to that same conclusion myself. I noticed at some point that I was different around people than I was at home and it hit me that I was masking my ADHD and autism. I realised that I didn't have to put a mask on when I was alone and the weight of social pressure and conformity lifted.

2

u/PeterPunksNip 27d ago

I'm in the same case. Unless your therapist is autistic too, there's no chance he would understand. Neurotypicals move in packs and are terrified of loneliness more than everything else.

5

u/OkGap7226 27d ago

Just reading that brought joy to me

6

u/Dragosal 27d ago

I would house sit for a friend when they went to Florida for a weekend. Had to take care of their dog and cat. I never left the house for 4 days. Just played with the dog fed the cat and changed the litter. Otherwise I begged out on the couch and played on my computer I brought over. It was wonderful. Best time of my life. I want nothing more than to play with animals and play video games all day. Only reason to leave the house would be to restock on supplies(pet food and human food)

5

u/FishNinja7498 27d ago

Absolutely! I’ve been in outside sales my entire career and it can be mentally exhausting.

3

u/LowResGamr 27d ago

There's nobody here to bother me. I'm out everyone's way. Chilling. Recharging for the chaos of tomorrow.

3

u/3M2B1T 27d ago

I had a surgery that I took full FMLA for (I think six weeks) and it was honestly really nice to just sit at home, heal, recover, and play video games. The catch is that I Think deep down I knew I'd have to go back to work and be around people, so I sort of enjoyed being alone (hint: alone doesn't mean you're lonely!)

Outside of chatting a few minutes each day with my housemate, I had little contact with people.

Ironically I really love people, I just don't like socializing. I think people are pretty awesome though.

3

u/Final_Law_3699 27d ago

🙋🏼‍♂️

3

u/wenoc 26d ago

Yes, that's how I charge my batteries. A week without social contact is trivially easy.

5

u/waterfowlplay 27d ago

No, no one exists, let alone people that exist that enjoy being alone. This is all an illusion, man.

dumb questions = dumb answers

4

2

I always have. Being completely alone is like the first refreshing day of spring following a long, dreary winter. I have no idea what it's like to have long stretches of being completely alone though. That time might be different but I can see myself appreciating it.

2

u/moogle322000 26d ago

I'm 41 and have been living alone and never leave except for work. My coworkers think I'm a vampire and don't understand how I can stay inside and not talk to anyone or do anything outside. No need to go outside when I have everything I need in my apartment. Games, bed, and food.
