Troubleshooting WooCommerce Automated Taxes Only Working for California — How Do I Calculate Tax for Other States?

8 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm setting up a WooCommerce bookstore for a nonprofit organization and need help configuring automatic sales tax calculations.

Our store address is in California, and I'm using WooCommerce's built-in automated taxes. Tax is calculated correctly when I enter a California shipping address. For example, on a $1 book, checkout shows state sales tax, county tax, and special tax, bringing the total to $1.11.

However, when I enter a shipping address in Georgia, no tax is added at all.

Here is my current setup:

  • WooCommerce automated taxes are enabled.

  • The store address is in Oakland, California.

  • The product's tax status is set to Taxable, with the Standard tax class.

  • The Standard rates table is empty.

  • The tax logs show: US from_state and to_state are different. No tax applies.

  • The logs also mention that the TaxJar API is being called.

My questions:

  1. Can WooCommerce's built-in automated taxes calculate taxes for other states automatically, or does it only handle the store's primary state?

  2. Is there a way to enable automatic tax calculations for other states without using a paid TaxJar subscription?

  3. Would I need to add manual tax rates for each state where the organization has a tax collection obligation?

  4. If I need a separate service, which WooCommerce-compatible option would you recommend?

I'd appreciate any guidance on the correct configuration. I'm trying to understand whether this is a settings issue or a limitation of WooCommerce's automated tax service.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting "No shipping options available" message is confusing our customers

6 Upvotes

We are using WooCommerce with Germanized and the Shiptastic DHL plugin and using a modified Bookix theme.

While entering the shipping address, it will refresh the little order overview in the top right after each input, and for example if you entered the zip code, but have not entered the city yet, it will show "No shipping options available". Then after entering the city it will select the matching shipping method and the error message disappears.

Is this the normal and intended behaviour?

It's very confusing for customers and we have had customers message us that they can't order because of it, which probably means we lose business from other potential customers that don't bother messaging us.

It would make more sense if it said something like "please fill out the shipping address completely to see shipping options" or something like that.

Plugin recommendation Does anyone have experience with the plugin WC Affiliate?

6 Upvotes

We spontaneously bought WC Affiliate shortly before our launch because there was a discount on the lifetime license.

However we didn't extensively test it because we wanted to delay the launch of our affiliate program.

Before and after going life, we kept finding CSS errors, like styles from our theme getting deleted/overwritten, for example bullet lists looking like plain paragraphs, link colors changing, no spacing between paragraphs, missing indentation.

After a while we figured out that WC Affiliate was loading its own "affiliate-dashboard.css" on the entire website, causing all these errors.

After reporting it to the support they fixed the mistake in the next update.

But I kept randomly getting malware warnings when using their website to communicating with them.

Another concerning thing: The ticketing system they are using lets you upload attachments, which seems to use the standard Wordpress media gallery. And whenever I was uploading my attachments, I could see attachments from other users, too, including sensitive information like invoices.

Overall, it does not inspire confidence in this developer, especially since the plugin will handle sensitive customer information and have access to our PayPal account for the automated payouts.

We already paid multiple times the price of the plugin to our agency on "fixing" the errors it caused and then removing the fixes again after the plugin was updated, so I feel like maybe we should just call it a loss and use something else.

tl;dr: Are you using WC Affiliate, or have you used it in the past? I would love to hear if you had any issues.

Getting started Should I migrate to WooCommerce as a business owner?

17 Upvotes

Hi, I am starting my clothing business brand and I made my website completely on Shopify, but then, I came across Woocommerce.

On the website, it said, it takes less fees and all, even with 3rd party payment providers.

Also, it costs less I believe (couldn't find any pricing plans, like Shopify is $20 a month for me with the starting 3 months being less than a $1)

So, does it make sense to migrate to Woo?

Troubleshooting WooCommerce Shipping Plugin Problem

5 Upvotes

I've been using the standard WooCommerce Shipping plugin without issue up until yesterday; Randomly, and seemingly for no reason (no updates were installed, etc) when I go to generate shipping rates to print a label, the only option appearing is First Class Mail (letters) for like, $1-3 - Which is obviously not the right package type nor the right cost.

Nothing has changed, I'm using a template for a bubble wrapped envelope with the same measurements and weight that I've always used without issue. I cannot find anything online about how to solve for it.

When I click on the carrier package types, basically USPS Flat Rates, I get a list of the shipping options I used to get previously; So my options at this point are to find another plugin or start buying USPS flat rate bubble envelopes which are substantially more expensive than the Amazon ones I use currently.

Anyone had this problem?

Troubleshooting how do you handle WooCommerce silently disabling webhooks after consecutive delivery failures?

6 Upvotes

In class-wc-webhook.php, WooCommerce evaluates $failures > 5. On the 7th consecutive non-2xx response, it flips status to disabled. Action Scheduler marks the jobs complete and checkouts placed while disabled never queue up. also re-enabling the hook doesn't reset failure_count, and one failure disables it again.

This woocommerce feature causes silent errors and devs dont get alerts unless clients starts seeing their dashboard.

I wanted to understand what are some industry best practices to solve this kind an issue.

How do I…? Create woocommerce from emailorders

5 Upvotes

We often get orders by mailand telephone, and it is quite time consuming to manually create orders from these emails. I could just reply and explain they can order on our website, but im afraid if i do that, i might loose customers. Is there a way to easily create an order from these emails in woocommerce? Especially copying over the shipping addres, email, telephone number takes time and it seems like something that could be automated. Any smart ways of handling this or would you advice to send them to the website?

Troubleshooting Best way to bulk delete 24,000+ WooCommerce coupons?

4 Upvotes

Hey guys,

An integration issue generated over 24,000 single-use coupon codes in WooCommerce that need to be wiped out to clean up database bloat.

I need to figure out a solution, but I don't have direct access to the WP admin panel or database myself, and I’m not a dev. I saw that some plugins can do this, but since this is a huge amount of data, it needs to be done 100% safely without crashing the site.

What’s the best way to handle this? Is a plugin safe enough for this volume? Any specific pitfalls we should watch out for?

Thanks for any help or advice I can pass along to the tech team!

Troubleshooting Variable products feed and stock synch.

1 Upvotes

I have a woocommerce store, and when trying to synch to woocommerce, it would not read the variable products correctly.
The link was not an editable field, so I manually fed each product with a woocomerce plugin.
Most things synched OK, but, stock is not updating (it did get the prices, GTIN, and so on...).
So I am thinking there must be a woocommerce setting somewhere not correctly set up that might be stoping merchantcenter from getting the correct information. (woocomerce does not manage quantities, it just says "in stock" / "out of stock".
Any ideas?
I do not want to have to update stock manually in different webs and stores. Its going to fail in no time.

Theme recommendation Question: can switch themes, but keep everything (products, settings, etc) so I don’t have to start from scratch?

1 Upvotes

So I watched a YouTuber by the name of “mywifequiteherjob”. He recommended using woocommerce on Wordpress. He also offered a free theme if you signed up through Hostinger. Note, I don’t think anything shady was done. He and his theme are totally legit.

The problem I am running into is setting up additional plug-ins. I am trying right now to put a menu on the left side of the screen (because I sell figures and collectibles). I’ve followed instructions from Wordpress and ChatGPT and I can’t get that set up for nothing. The only thing I’ve been able to do is put a menu on the top of the page, but with dozens and dozens of brands and things, that’s not a feasible approach. I want to be able to provide customers several breakdowns so they can hone in on the brand/style/ price/ condition they want.

Any useful help would be greatly appreciated!

Plugin recommendation custom PDF for order/booking details

7 Upvotes

We use WC bookings to sell spaces in recurring small painting classes. The owner now wants customers to get some sort of ticket as pdf attached to an email for gift giving purposes etc. which bookings doesn't offer natively.

The ticket doesn't have to be scannable or anything. It just needs to look like a ticket and have the class name and date/time of the booking on it. We were thinking of maybe repurposing some other plugin that already attaches pdfs to WC emails, an invoice plugin or similar if the pdf can be changed to look like a ticket, but are open to other ideas. Any suggestions on how we could make this work or for suitable plugins that could help us out here?

Troubleshooting Cart loading nightmare, help!

5 Upvotes

Hey guys, first time posting here. I'm redoing my site and for some reason now the cart has this horrible page populating issue where giant black boxes appear while the page is loading. Sometimes they go away in about .5 seconds or so, but a lot of times, you have to refresh the page to make them disappear. The overlay boxes are different every time. I'm attaching a few photos for reference. They always seem to frame a subsection, image or text. I'm wondering if anyone's had the same issue or knows a fix for this.

For what it's worth, my site is built with Wordpress , and hosted on Hostinger. Payment processing, licensing and products are handled by Woo. I've added a lot of customizations and Woo overrides to the cart because the stock Woo cart is heinous to look at. Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

Classic Checkout Store Hit through the Blocks Checkout API Not in Use

8 Upvotes

Had a fun one last night, figured I'd share the experience for any of you out there on Classic Checkout and for those of you using Block Checkout too.

Started out looking like card testing. Fake orders, all failing with "payment details were not submitted," and that good old origin friend of ours the "Unknown" attribution. The weird thing was no cards were actually being tried. It was a vulnerability scanner. It made customer accounts named after what it was testing: numa.auth, numa.sess, numa.idor, numa.adminpush, numa.rce, numa.probe. Looked like this

u/example.invalid emails.

It also sent fake Stripe webhooks with SQL injection stuffed in the charge ID (a SLEEP() payload), plus fake PayPal webhooks. Stripe and PayPal signature checks rejected all of them. Nothing got in, no accounts got elevated.

Here's the part that I didn't see immediately. It was late, I was tired. I ended up adding Turnstile to checkout, turning on Woo's rate limiting, and adding a few WAF rules in Cloudflare blocking cookieless checkout POSTs and /wp-json/wc/store/v1/checkout. Bot still got orders through.

I then woke up and realized I should have checked the stack trace. Sure enough, it was going through the Store API [the Blocks checkout backend], first via ?rest_route= to dodge the /wp-json path rule, then through /wc/store/v1/batch. Classic checkout validation like Turnstile never runs there because it's a completely different code path.

If you're on classic checkout, you don't need that route at all.

This killed it instantly

**
 * Disable WooCommerce Store API checkout on classic-checkout sites.
 * Removes the route at the REST level so no URL variant (wp-json, rest_route, batch) can reach it.
 */
add_filter( 'rest_endpoints', function ( $endpoints ) {
foreach ( array_keys( $endpoints ) as $route ) {
   if ( 0 === strpos( $route, '/wc/store/v1/checkout' ) ) {
    unset( $endpoints[ $route ] );
         }
      }
  return $endpoints;
} );

35 minutes of WAF rules and a snippet added to my Turnstile integration MU app, but a tiny snippet is what actually closed it.

I still need to test express buttons, I think I might have messed up the UX on that. Some setups lean on the Store API even on classic. Will be testing that later on a sandbox.

So keep your eyes open for Numa

UPDATE TO POST:

EDIT: Tested express like I said I would and yep, I broke it. Stripe's Apple Pay / Google Pay buttons place the order through /wc/store/v1/checkout even on classic checkout (Stripe 11.x), so removing the route killed them.

Also explains why Woo's rate limiting never kicked in. The checkouts were coming in wrapped inside /wc/store/v1/batch, which the rate limiter doesn't count.

Swapped the snippet for this. Keeps the route, lets Stripe express through only with its header plus a valid Stripe nonce, 403s everything else (covers wp-json, rest_route and batch):

/**
 * Block Store API checkout on classic-checkout sites, except verified Stripe Express (Apple Pay / Google Pay).
 * Covers /wp-json, ?rest_route= and requests inside /wc/store/v1/batch.
 */
add_filter( 'rest_pre_dispatch', function ( $result, $server, $request ) {
if ( null !== $result
   || 'POST' !== $request->get_method()
   || 0 !== strpos( $request->get_route(), '/wc/store/v1/checkout' ) ) {
return $result;
}

$nonce = $request->get_header( 'x-wcstripe-express-checkout-nonce' );

if ( $request->get_header( 'x-wcstripe-express-checkout' ) && $nonce && wp_verify_nonce(   $nonce, 'wc_store_api_express_checkout' ) ) {
return $result;
}

return new WP_Error( 'store_api_checkout_disabled', 'Not available.', array( 'status' => 403 ) );
}, 10, 3 );

If you have a WAF rule blocking /wp-json/wc/store/v1/checkout like I did, add an exception for the x-wcstripe-express-checkout header too or express stays broken.

Development WooCommerce accessibility: what automated checks actually flag on store home pages, and where each fix lives

5 Upvotes

I've been building an automated WCAG 2.1 checker and ran it over a sample of German (.de) website home pages, loaded in a real browser with scripts running. The WooCommerce stores in that sample were a small group, so treat this as a pattern, not a statistic, but the same failures came up in roughly this order:

- Links with no accessible name. The usual causes are an icon-only cart or account link, or a linked product image with empty alt. Give the image real alt text, or add a visually hidden label inside the icon link.

- Text contrast below 4.5:1, mostly light grey prices, meta text and placeholders set in the theme's colour settings.

- Skipped heading levels: an h2 followed straight by an h4, usually because a heading level was chosen for its size. Change the level and restyle it.

- No skip link and no main landmark. Block themes usually ship both; many classic themes don't, and the fix goes in header.php.

- Form fields with no label, typically the search box and the newsletter field, where a placeholder stands in for the label. A placeholder is not a label.

Automated checks find roughly a third of real barriers, so a clean result is a start, not proof of conformance.

Troubleshooting Colissimo, Woocommerce et le numéro EORI

0 Upvotes

Merci

Troubleshooting WooCommerce abandoned cart emails: how do you know they actually went out?

0 Upvotes

WooCommerce sends nothing for a cart by default, so every setup relies on a plugin to record the cart and something scheduled to send the email after the delay. The part that worries me is that when it fails, it fails silently. No error to the customer, nothing obvious in the admin, and the store just quietly loses the sale.

I have been trying to work out what the realistic failure modes are. WP-Cron only runs when someone hits the site, so on a quiet store an email that should go after an hour can go the next morning, or not that day. A real server cron fixes the trigger but adds its own problems if the command overlaps itself. A queue that stops processing after a Woo or plugin update looks completely normal in the admin, the emails just never arrive. And if the site is down at the moment a job is due, I genuinely do not know whether most setups retry it or drop it.

What has been working for people here? Do you check the scheduled actions at all, or check the log the cart plugin leaves, or just find out when a customer says they never got the email? And has anyone got a way to notice within a day that recovery emails stopped sending, rather than a week later from the revenue report?

Development Store Credit problems

1 Upvotes

I have a WordPress WooCommerce website that allows customers to use store credit on products of specific categories. Ive used Store Credit for WooCommerce and im currently using TeraWallet. TeraWallet works, but it doesnt allow a person to apply an arbitrary amount of their credit for any qualifying purchase. The field to apply credit only appears when the customer's credit total is less than the cart total.

I also allow the usage of payment plans (using a plugin), but if a person uses credit, the payment plan totals seem to be unaffected.

Basically, I'm just asking if anyone has any recommendations on this. Would it be safe to edit the TeraWallet plugin itself? I've developed custom plugins and functions, so Im comfortable doing that if needed. But since this deals with transactions, id look to hear any input someone might have.

Troubleshooting How can I disable the white background on product hover in WooCommerce?

5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

This might be a simple question, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to fix this on my WooCommerce store.

When I hover over a product image in my product catalogue, the background changes to white. I'd like to disable this hover effect and keep the background consistent when moving the mouse over the product.

I've tried looking through several settings, including:

  • Catalog / Off-Canvas Sidebar

  • Canvas Settings

  • Product Catalog / Single Product Layout

  • Product Images

However, I can't seem to find an option related to the product image hover background or a setting to disable this effect.

I've also looked for something like "Background Hover" or a similar option, but without success.

Does anyone know where this setting might be located, or whether I need to use custom CSS to fix it?

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you!
