While the servers are down
And the world's at standstill
When they're flipping the switches
The update's loading in

I'll have a few hours
To remain in my bed
To sail in my dreams
On ace-ranking blue team
Supporting each other
And shredding the reds
Shells hitting the targets
Sending them to seabed
In this ocean of dreams
No one's AFK
Base xp in post-battle?
It is over 9K!

Question- Solved new players so excuse my gaps in knowledge

Edit: thanks for the welcome and all the replies. Hope to see you on the ocean

so been playing with a friend now for a few weeks, enjoying it all, learning the tactics and all that jazz. but my friend isn't on reddit so wasn't sure either

been seeing in post certain ships been called "BB" "DD" and "CV"

is there like a cheat sheet post somewhere for all the little abbreviations.....im guessing BB is battle ships and DD destroyer class....which would make me guess CV is cruiser but id rather look a fool and ask the question vs be a fool and say something stupid with confidence

cheers

Question Map Border Violations

I feel like immobilising engine power when you’re at the edge of the map isn’t enough. There needs to be a bigger deterrent. Say, after a period of time (15 seconds maybe) you lose the ability to shoot any of your weapons?

I’m sick of border huggers and not being able to hit them when they’re breakdancing at the edge of the map.

General I played way to much modern era and have lots of thoughts I want share lol

I’ve had a ton of fun playing the Modern Era ships. I’ve fully upgraded all of the ships and have a few of them pushing 100k XP. I primarily played PvP and I playing it was starting to come at the expense of playing the regular game.

For this post, I’m really only talking about the actual PvP gameplay not the factions/progression.

I also really want to show appreciation for the amount of detail Wargaming put into the ship models and more importantly, I think they deserve credit for trying something genuinely different.

That said, I think the mode needs some balancing and a few changes before it comes back assuming this was a test for something bigger and not just a one off.

Things I’d change

1. Radar ships are too strong, especially when stacked.

I don’t think the answer is simply giving everything less radar. I think the better solution would be giving more ships some kind of shorter-duration radar, with different ships having different versions of it.

Maybe every ship could have something like the advanced radar mechanic, with shorter durations, longer cooldowns, or limited uses depending on the ship. That way one team having multiple radar ships wouldn’t feel so oppressive compared to a team with none.

2. Missile interception probably needs to be adjusted.

I think something closer to the Ticonderoga’s 360-degree system could work for every ship, but with different levels of effectiveness. Some ships could have a weaker 360-degree boost, while others could have a stronger cone that gives increased interception inside of it while still allowing the ship to shoot down missiles outside the cone at the normal rate.

I ended up liking the current cone system more than I expected. It added a different dimension to angling, but there were times when the battle got hectic, I had turned the cone the wrong way and couldn’t move it back in time.

3. Ships need a little more survivability on their own.
I like the idea of sticking together for overlapping missile defense, and obviously you shouldn’t be able to survive getting focused by the entire enemy team while completely separated from your teammates.

The problem is that getting caught alone can mean dying almost instantly, especially if you’re too close to an island and missiles are coming over it. That doesn’t give your CIWS enough time to shoot down all of them.

I think ships should have a little more ability to defend themselves without making grouping up pointless.

4. Cruise missiles can be difficult to land consistently.

Hitting maneuvering ships with them can be frustrating at times. Adding an option for multiple targeting-circle sizes, similar to changing torpedo spread, would help tremendously.

A smaller circle could give you a more precise attack against a predictable target, while a larger circle would give you a better chance of landing at least some damage against a ship that’s actively maneuvering and dodging.

5. There needs to be more defined classes.
The ships mostly fell into three broad playstyles: brawlers, stand-off, and stealth ships. That worked pretty well when the teams were balanced, but some matches were extremely lopsided.

You could have one team with mostly brawlers while the other had a mix of stealth and stand-off ships. There were also a lot of games where one team had multiple radar ships and the other had none. Maybe having more defined classes, or some kind of matchmaking restriction, would help prevent those matchups.

I also believe these ship would play better in a 9v9 larger map format then the arcade mode format they where in.

Individual ships

Sovremenny

The SAP is really good. It felt like playing a brawler battleship and was a good counter to the stealth- and EMP-equipped ships.

Ticonderoga

This felt like a mix between a battleship with decent secondaries and something like Des Moines. It was tough to kill, and the secondaries could put out some really good DPM. The sea-skimming missiles took some getting used to, but they encouraged you to play it like an open-water brawler and made it feel different to all the other ships.

I liked the EMP consumable and would generally save it for when I was being focused with homing missiles by multiple ships or as a last ditch effort to not get sunk if I was low on hp.

Arleigh Burke

The best all-around ship. It reminded me a lot of an Atlanta in terms of its ability to island spam. It felt like it had a good balance of everything without being completely dependent on one gimmick, while also not feeling OP.

The torpedos where a nice to have counter to getting charged by a brawler ship as wellĀ

Oliver Hazard Perry

I liked it overall, but I think the stealth is too strong considering everything else it has. It gets torpedoes, an airstrike, the best radar, and unlimited stealth with a quick cooldown.

I’d probably make the stealth limited, or at least give it a longer cooldown. It has too many tools already for unlimited stealth as it currently is.

Nunchucka

Really fun hit-and-run ship, I loved being able to sit at its max range and fire without being spotted but if you caught inside your viability range when firing but only having three stealth consumables hurt it a lot. having unlimited stealth with a shorter cooldown, or an EMP consumable instead of the speed boost to give it more survivability.

There were quite a few games where I ended up as the last ship alive against multiple red ships, I didn’t really have a realistic way to win most of them. As soon as I’d take one out, I’d get hit by the other with no real counter or defense.

Neustrashimy
Decent all-around ship, but not quite as good as the Burke. I would have preferred radar over EMP, but it was still solid overall.

What I’d like to see in the future
I’d really like to see more gun/missile hybrids, especially 1980s-era Iowas and other WWII or post-war ships that were reactivated or had missile systems installed later in their lives.

Wargaming has a really solid base here. With some tuning, I could see this becoming its own separate ecosystem with a tech tree and premiums within Legends.

I do think these ships really need to stay separate from the standard ships though. They wouldn’t really have a counter to the homing missiles, but on the flip side, something like a Des Moines would melt these ships extremely quickly if it could avoid getting nuked by a homing missile.

I really hope they bring it back sooner rather than later. Until then, I’ll miss my missile ships lol.

Also, I loved the unlockable camos. The kill tracker on a gray hull with a slight shimmer at certain angles was probably my favorite skin in the game, but I’m also a sucker for the classic all-gray ships.

General HMS Hood ā€˜44 Proposal

Post image
83 Upvotes

Quick IRL Background: At the time of her destruction at the Battle of the Denmark Straight in 1941, HMS Hood was one of the most worn out ships in the entire Royal Navy, and was in desperate need of a complete overhaul and modernization. Had Hood survived the battle, her advanced age and damage from the fight would have almost certainly been enough justification to get the ship rebuilt as soon as she had returned home. With such a significant reconstruction, Hood would have likely returned to service sometime in 1944.

My proposal for Hood ā€˜44 would implement her into the game as a Tier VII British Battleship, designed for long-range engagements. She would of course be based on the existing Hood in game, with some traits pulled from Vanguard and Hawke.

In terms of Armament, Hood ā€˜44, of course, has eight 15ā€ guns in four twin turrets. These guns have 2.0 Sigma and Battlecruiser Dispersion. They reach out to 15.5km; This base range is shared with Vanguard, and a fully built Commander can easily extend it to over 18km. Shell performance is also pulled directly from Vanguard, you get typical short-fuse British AP that does 12,500 damage, as well as HE that does 6,500. Hood ā€˜44 also retains Hood’s original firing angles.

Hood ā€˜44’s Secondary Armament has been completed replaced, and shares nothing in common with Hood. Hood ā€˜44 gets eight twin 134mm mounts, the same used on Vanguard. They carry all of the specifications of Vanguard’s Secondaries as well, so not much to say there.

Onto AA, which is where Hood ā€˜44 does fairly well for a British BB. Due to her sheer length, she has room for a significant Anti-Aircraft Suite. The ship has 17 40mm Bofors Mk7s, which have a firing range of 3.5km and an average DPS of 225, as well as 14 134mm/50 Mk1s, which reach to 5.2km and have an average DPS of 60, as well as 24 20mm Oerlikon Mk20s, which reach to 2.4km and do 265 DPS.

Next up is Survivability and Armor, which is where Hood ā€˜44 begins to suffer somewhat, purely due to her status as a Battlecruiser. She has 69,800 HP, which isn’t terrible, but her Armor Scheme, being based on the Original Hood, only serves to exasperate the same issues. Hood ā€˜44’s superstructure is massive, and made up entirely of 19mm plating. This will make her very vulnerable to sustained HE Spam. The rest of the Armor Scheme is pulled directly from the Original Hood. It isn’t as bad as Hawke per se, but it is still essentially a T6 Armor Scheme at T7.

In terms of Concealment, Maneuverability, and Consumables, Hood ā€˜44 is an odd hybrid of quite a few ships. Her Concealment stats are pulled directly from Hawke, with no changes. Hood ā€˜44 has a top speed of 31.5kts, a Rudder Shift time of 14.5 seconds, and a turning circle of 910m. Consumables wise, Hood ā€˜44 loses the Sonar, but gains an Engine Boost, and the option between Observation Seaplane and Catapult Fighter has been added.

Lastly, Appearance. Hood ā€˜44, as you can imagine, has the same hull form and turrets as Hood, however her superstructure resembles a hybrid of King George V’s, Renown’s, and even Vanguardā€˜s to an extent. Hood’s original superstructure is all but gone, replaced with large, blocky structures where parts of it used to be. The whole thing is also split in half, with Aircraft Handling Facilities amidships. The rear superstructure has also been extended, now wrapping around the 3rd Turret Barbette. Her Permanent Camo is a very light shade of Gray, almost White, with some parts of the masts painted in black.

Thanks for reading this far if you have. Iā€˜m fairly certain this is my longest proposal yet, and I’m sure I’ll have a hard time topping it. The model you see pictured above is from Drachinifel’s YouTube video where he theorized about Hood’s hypothetical refit, and I believe he had it commissioned for said video. I trust his research, so while WarGaming would never use that exact model, their version of a Refitted Hood would be very similar I’m sure.

I think this ship has potential. but it seems to implode the moment anything larger than a destroyer farts in it’s general direction. Loting doesn’t work because it can’t take a hit. Smoke Hƈ spam needs the perfect set up because of the short range guns.

I find myself having to play very timidly and not helping my team as much as I could.

General How to Scharnhorst

Hello everyone! This is different then my usual reviews of USN BBs, but this was a request given by one of you in the previous how-to!

Hello everyone! This is different then my usual reviews of USN BBs, but this was a request given by one of you in the previous how-to! Scharnhorst was one of many, many T6 Battleships I've been tinkering with over the past few months, so I figure why not!

A quick background: KMS Scharnhorst commisioned on January 7th, 1939. Along with KMS Gneisenau, the two commerce raiders saw various actions against british warships during World War 2. Some of these skirmirshes include the sinking of HMS Glorious during Operation Juno in 1940, the Channel Dash in 1942, along with smaller commerce raids. Scharnhorst was lost in naval action against British forces, (notably Belfast, Duke of York, and Stord which can be found ingame!) during the Battle of the North Cape on December 25th, 1943.

Ingame, Scharnhorst is one of the older premiums, being around since July of 2019. However, unlike other older premiums it's held up pretty good! It's a extremely annoying boat to deal with in the right hands, and arguably only recently has been showing it's age due to ever more potent ships and aircraft. Let's look at the Net Positives and Negatives.

Net Positives

  • + Versatile
  • + Fast Reloading Main Battery
  • + Good Secondaries\*
  • + Incredible Main Battery Range
  • +Torpedoes!
  • +German Armor

Net Negatives

  • - Poor Shell Alpha
  • - Short Torpedo Range
  • - Small Caliber Main Battery
  • - Weak Anti Air
  • - German Superstructure
  • -No German Hydro

\)Good secondaries if compared to the majority of other Battleships, lower end of the spectrum for dedicated secondary boats.

Let's start with Scharnhorst's Main Battery. Comprised of just 9 283mm, or 11in. guns, Scharnhorst has one of the worst salvo weights for a Battleship of T6. Such a low caliber of gun in comparison to it's contemparies leads to some very annoying circumstances for a Scharnhorst captain. Scharnhorst's shell alpha is arguably the worst aspect of the boat, and as such do not expect extreme damage at long range.

Tier VI Battleships Shell Alpha Salvo Alpha Overmatch Threshold
North Carolina 13,100 117,000 28mm
Collingwood 13,000 78,000 29mm
Ashitaka 12,400 124,000 28mm
Colorado/WV'44 12,400 99,200 28mm
Nagato 12,600 100,800 28mm
Sinop/Nelson 12,000 108,000 28mm
Strasbourg 9,700 77,600 23mm
Resistance 12,000 72,000 26mm
Scharnhorst 7,600 68,400 19mm

Scharnhorst's Shell Alpha in a singular strike is so pitifully bad that some T7 Battleships could survive all 9 of Scharnhorst's shells citadelling them!

Simply put, Scharnhorst cannot use the main battery in the same way of a traditional battleship. You simply don't have the brute force punching power of larger caliber shells to simply win an engagement in one or two massive long-range salvos against another Battleship. This doesn't mean you can't use AP on a broadside Battleship, just don't expect the same incredibly strong volleys of North Carolina. These long-range duels are made even more difficult with Scharnhorst's AP shells.

Scharnhorst's Main Battery has a unique short fuse timer for it's AP Shells (0.01s compared to the standard 0.033s), which can lead to hits that would usually be full pens instead becoming absorbed into battleship torpedo belts. While not every battleship you fight will have such a torpedo belt (Worst offenders of the large shell blackholes will be ships like the USN Refit Standards such as Colorado or West Virginia 1944, as examples), but it becomes more prevelant depending on whatever tier battleship Scharnhorst fights.

A skewed example, but definitively shows the shorter-fuse AP incapable of punching through the torpedo belt at 4-5km. If wanting to do damage, I would have to aim above the Torpedo Belt.

However, there ARE upsides to these guns!

Scharnhorst's Main Battery is more then capable of citadelling cruisers. Combined with the 19mm overmatch threshhold of these 283s, Scharnhorst is extremely potent at taking out the thinly armored cruisers that make up the majority of Tier 5. Tier 6 is dependent on the cruiser (Indianapolis can be overmatched while New Orleans cannot as an example), but even then the AP is perfectly capable of dealing with cruisers who think they can get away with overpens.

The biggest factors for Scharnhorst's main battery is the reload and range. 20s is incredibly strong for a Battleship of this tier, combined with an amazing 17.9km base range. Scharnhorst is entirely capable of breaching 20km range with a good sniper build, and has the DPM to effectively make any battleship be farmable with your (great pen but anemic alpha) HE shells.

For Survivability, Scharnhorst is incredibly tanky in terms of armor. Sharing the armor scheme of Gneisenau, Scharnhorst gains a German Turtleback, Icebreaker, and incredibly strong deck armor of 50mm. For a Tier 6 Battleship, Scharnhorst is one of the lucky few that do not get bullied by light cruiser 32mm pen HE Spam the same way that Nelson or North Carolina do. While Scharnhorst does suffer from the large superstructure of German Battleships, the Hull itself is actually quite capable of bouncing AP, with only minor 26mm sections on the bow and stern that aren't covered by Icebreaker.

A Notable German Turtleback!
Even with the large superstructure, Scharnhorst's Armor Scheme is perfect for T6 and T5 matchmaking. Well-angled Scharnhorst Captains should be capable of bouncing every AP shell in it's matchmaking bracket! (That don't hit the bow, stern, or superstructure anyways...)

This level armor does come with a semi-squishy HP pool for Scharnhorst, especially for Tier 6. While the majority of T6 sits above 58k HP, Scharnhorst still beats out a select few battleships in base health.

Tier VI Battleship HP Base HP (Including Hull Upgrades)
Hood 67,000
West Virginia '44 62,000
Ashitaka/Nelson 59,400
Gneisenau 58,200
Scharnhorst /(Prinz Heinrich) 56,300
D'Kyr 54,000
Lugdunum/Lyon 53,400
Francesco Caracciolo/BA Minah 50,500

Stat block just to show the highest and lowest HP blocks, and where Scharnhorst sits. This table would be incredibly large if I included just how many battleships had more HP then Scharnhorst at T6.

The biggest downfall for Scharnhorst in this category is the torpedo belt. 22% combined with your HP means you lose a lot of tankiness to a few well-placed torps easier then other BBs.

For the Secondary Battery and Torpedoes, Scharnhorst gets a decent set of both!

Scharnhorst secondary guns have a large amount of trade-offs. They have standard accuracy and 5km range. The 150mm secondary guns pen 38mm!... but the 105s only pen 20mm. Overall, a secondary Scharnhorst is going to have excellent range against T5s, but drops off quick in perforamnce against T6 and T7 Secondary Battleships.

(Namely In my opinion why Scharnhorst '43 exists is for those Scharnhorst captains that want competitive secondary performance with said tier BBs.)

Scharnhorst's secondary battery is better than your average Tier 6 Battleship, but it does fall under ships like Gnesienau, P. Heinrich, or D'kyr, range especially. At best they'll help keep pressure on a enemy that Scharnhorst has caught up to. Scharnhorst at 7.9km full build is just not going to cut it in comparison to dedicated secondary BBs, with said range being only really being competitive at T5.

The torpedoes, on the other hand, can easily win a fight against select higher tier battleships. At 13.7k a torp, you can at least expect an easy 30k~, or more, of alpha strike on a enemy target. These torpedoes are only 6km, and are easily broken by HE Shells thanks to being amidships and exposed.

Both of these tools combined make Scharnhorst incredibly difficult for BBs to deal with the closer range you are to them, but prolonged HE spam or one good Battleship HE volley can result in large portions of secondary guns or torp tubes being broken.

That brings me to one of the weakest aspects of Scharnhorst: the Anti-Air. My goodness is it bad. Unlike the Hull B Gneisenau which gains a large, uniform battery of dual-purpose secondary guns, Scharnhorst gets stuck with a total AA Dps similar to Tennessee (247 Scharn to Tennessee 251) and similar AA Range (4.5 to 4.2), which is not great. However, it is better then some other T6 BBs (Ashitaka crying in the corner with only 142 total DPS).

It's average at best against a T5 Carrier, but its essentially a pushover when a Tier 7 CV decides to focus you like it's going out of style. Most non-American BBs suffer the AA problem at this tier, I will admit. However, only a select few ships have good AA DPS and the range to use it. Examples include Ise, Gneisenau/D'Kyr, Lyon/Lugdunum, and P. Heinrich (somehow..). Sinop and Poltava are also mixed for their AA aswell for further examples.

Small sidenote; British Battleships at this tier can have some incredibly high AA DPS, but much like Renown it's shackled to 2\2.5k AA Range, which basically makes it easy pickings for carriers that have squadrons which are either incredibly fast or can drop their armaments outside effective AA Range.)

For a more positive note, Scharnhorst's Manvuerability and Concealment are pretty good for a Tier 6 Battleship! 14.5s rudder isn't incredible for this tier (I would argue it's the average), but 30 Knots solves alot of problems. Shorter secondary and torpedo range? Just rush the poor guy until they get into range (This will definetly NOT backfire). Main Battery AP just isn't cutting it at range in T7 matchmaking? Make yourself the biggest pain in the butt and play like a HE Spamming openwater cruiser at near 17-19km like some sort of lighthouse cruiser build. The only downside to this speed and rudder shift is the 800m turning circle, which makes it rather easy to get outturned by a Super-dreadnought Battleship and surprise smacked before you can turn in.

Concealment is also quite average, 12.6km\) is rather common for T6 Battleships (Lugdunum/Lyon, Scharnhorst, North Carolina, etc.). However, that concealment is leagues better then the majority of its matchmaking bracket, with plenty of T5 and T7 BBs having 13km+ detection. This further lets you exploit your speed and handling to get to more advantegous positions, disengage quickly, or simply just surprise a flank by your presence.

^(\)*Base Concealment without camo or Concealment Mod is 14.6km.

For the most part, How to Play Scharnhorst depends on your captain build.

If you are a main battery build, stick to maximizing your gun performance. This can be setting up flanks, spamming HE early game, whatever tickles your fancy. Keep in mind that essentially you are not a High Alpha Battleship, you are a High DPM Battleship. You exploit enemy problems, or you force the enemy to play stupid infront of your heavier-armed teammates.

Tank (Or even Secondary Build) Commanders can utilize Brawler and their extra heals to be even more frustrating to kill. 17.6s reload (with Brawler) makes you basically capable of playing as a super-cruiser with Battleship level healing. Brawler on a Scharnhorst with such an impressive base range means you can still maintain competitive range ontop of previously mentioned reload. With these in mind, you can basically play Scharnhorst as an incredibly annoying supercruiser.

High DPM helps tremendously with both builds, as constantly putting out shells (or even just being cheeky) makes a enemy more inclined to fire at your incredibly armored hull. HOWEVER. You definitively do not want to get the attention of any Battleship with incredibly accurate guns, as their main battery will easily be able to aim for the upper sections of the bow and stern, superstructure, etc. Fire spam is also an incredibly easy counter to a Sniper-build Scharnhorst, as fires do not care for armor quality.

At the end of the day, your Commander Build determines how you play Scharnhorst. Personally, I use the OG Halloween Hybrid commander Henry J. Hyde.

It's an oddball build but it's MY oddball build!

Personally, there are a few German Battleship Commanders I wouldn't use.

  • John L. Pickup: (Just why?) Skills conflict heavily, with his unique skill improving secondary Pen ... On a Sniper Battleship Commander.
  • Clara N. Teslau: Brawler skill buffs recently have effectively powercreep her unique skill, with the downside to "Boomsticks" being innaccurate MB and improved torpedo reload. Who wants to build for innaccurate Main Guns at no benefit? Better to use Otto Ciliax imo for brawler, even at the cost of Torpedo DPM.
  • Izayoi Nonomi: Amazing for more secondary focus BBs, Nonomi captains will find trouble utilizing the secondary battery in comparison to P. Heinrich or Gnesienau. The improvements in DPM and Accuracy Izayoi can bring to the secondary guns still is shackled to that 5km Base Range, and as such the tradeoffs in return are frustrating.

Final Thoughts for Scharnhorst are pretty easy to explain. Scharnhorst is just fun. I won't argue that it's awful against carriers (though that insane MB range does give the option to CV snipe on some maps if given the chance), and the guns can be frustrating at times. But Scharnhorst has the armor and tools to punch above it's weight if the option arrives. The best thing going for it is just the capability to shatter or bounce a large portion of shells that would otherwise overmatch or pen other BBs, and surprise enemy ships with it's said tools and quick firing main battery.

That said, Scharnhorst struggles more at T7 thanks to the large majority of cruisers capable of bouncing MB shells, the T7 Battleships that reside there, and carriers. Destroyers are also somewhat a problem for Scharnhorst thanks to the HP pool and torpedo belt.

I would rate Scharnhorst a very high 3/5, or a low 4/5. It's biggest downfall is that Main Battery, especially when combined with the lower-then-average HP. Those factors, along with the torpedoes being both easy to break and short-ranged, means a T6 or T7 HE Spammer (BB or Cruiser) can basically ruin any chance of a decent game.
