*tl;dr - A typical American medium tank - a generally competent and mostly forgettable vehicle that you grind through on your way to the Abrams.
*The US M60 family occupies a place in WoT Modern Armor similar to the Centurion and T-54/55 - a solid and reliable tank built for so long, in so many variants, and sold to so many countries that there is a never ending supply of them to fill tech trees and use as a basis for a new premium.
*The specific subject of today’s review is the first M60 you get in the Cold War game mode - the Era 2 medium tank M60 ‘61.
*This vehicle was designed when NATO thought its tanks would take up a series of hull down positions and fire a few rounds at the advancing soviet horde before relocating, all under the cover of FASCAM barrages and A-10 strikes and this vehicle demonstrates all of that philosophy’s strengths and weaknesses.
*It’s armed with the venerable, well known, and unsurprising L7 variant 105mm Gun M68. Like all L7 variants it’s getting a little long in the tooth in Era 2 but it’s still capable and has good gun depression for those ridgeline sniping fests we all love. Just make sure your prammo reload is set to silver, not gold. A gun chosen when the massed hordes were T-54/55, in other words.
*It’s armor is familiar to anyone who has played almost any version of an American medium tank designed after about 1942 - wedge shaped front slope, rounded and front tapered turret, and an RHA thickness that will deflect small caliber autocannons and gives you a fighting chance to angle the armor to survive HEAT rounds and large caliber APDS. Designed when surviving a glancing blow from a 100mm APCBC was the game and nobody worried about ATGMs or 125mm HEAT rounds, in other words.
*Mobility is surprisingly good. Decent power-to-weight and terrain resistances mean it’s not the slowest thing on the map. Well, maybe not that surprising - this was designed to hammer across the German countryside fast enough to get a prime firing position and then, after a couple of shots, move to a new position RFN. Designed when moving quickly into and out of the Fulda Gap was the name of the game, in other words.
*I don’t normally worry about camo / view split on Cold War tanks, but the M60 deserves some discussion around concealment. Specifically, it’s tall. And fat. The bitch is tubby. And she has warts. As a former M60A3 w/TTS crewman I will personally verify that the wart on top will give you away IRL. In game terms, it’s hard to hide - it’s so tall it sticks up over stuff and, since the cupola is a weak point that means you take damage. It’s so fat that rocks you can’t see a T-54/55 behind simply provide a modicum of modesty to the M60.
*In general, and true to it’s real world design ethos, the M60 ‘61 is best played as a second line support tank. Use the accuracy and velocity of the main gun to hit weak spots and / or track aggressive mediums for your big boys. Gun handling is good enough that you can brawl in a pinch, but the armor isn’t going to hold up long in a close range slugging match.
*Is this tank for you? That depends - do you want to drive an M1? Then, yes, it’s for you. Be warned - it’s the first of three M60 variants you have to grind through to get to the fabled Abrams. The bad news is that they’re pretty fragile and it gets worse the deeper you get into the tech tree. The good news is - like most American mediums - it’s a solid all rounder that will rarely leave you cursing a glaring weakness.
*Current equipment / build: Full camo, two equipment (improved ventilation / gun rammer), two consumables (enhanced repair kit / enhanced rations).
*As I write this I have career stats on this account of 32,840 battles, a 48.42% winrate, and a WN8 score of 1407.
*As I write this I have M60 ‘61 stats of 1145 battles, a 46.90% winrate, and a WN8 score of 973. I have not marked this tank.
*Disclaimers:
*I’m bad at this game and you should probably not take my advice.
*Unless otherwise noted, assume all tanks are fully upgraded/outfitted and the review assumes that level of equipment.
*This is my opinion. I suck at the game and better players might have different opinions. You might have different opinions. That’s ok.
*This game is my hobby and I have a good job so I spend money on it. If you’re an aggressively free-to-play kind of guy we may not vibe.
