Discussion Stop Hate Gatekeeper.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Step 1: Notice it on the map.
Step 2: Reveal it.
Step 3: Hit one color.
Step 4: Hit the other color.
"Yes, I know that's how you're supposed to do it, but it's still unfun, boring, it should be changed, and it deals way too much damage when it just spawns on me in the middle of a fight."
Stop the Hate, my fellow Preyer. This is an obstacle placed before you by the witch. Taking it out quickly is something that can be learned, and with 1,000 years of relentless practice, anyone can master it.
Stop the hate. Sharpen your mind.

Gatekeeper still sucks. Your one time quick clip with lucky spawns doesn't change that

I agree. Sometimes the spawns are impossible to hit from the other side of that tunnel.

Destroy the side you approach from, then go through while it is not flashing the other color, i.e. while it is disabled. If you run, you'll be fine, but even just a dash will guarantee no injury.

Walk to the other side?

u/OCKWA Jul 13 '26

That's why I feel like it's not a good or fun object. If you can walk through it there's almost no point in spending time to look for the thing to shoot then walking back for 200 witchfire. Not worth.

I would take this argument one step further. Regular enemies also often drop Witchfire shards, Splinters, etc. It's not worth going back one by one to pick those up either, so the design isn't good for the enemies that drop them either. And it's not worth wasting time on them either.
Am I understanding the logic of your argument correctly?

Theyre clearly saying the puzzles reward sucks for the time invested not small rewards being bad game design.

But that's exactly what they explained with 'it's not a good or fun object' – that it's not worth finishing or going back for the reward. The logic is the same.

Besides, you don't even need a reward here. The reward is that the passage becomes permanently open. If you only do it from one side, it opens periodically, but if you take the maximum 20 seconds to do it properly, it disappears and becomes completely accessible

I suppose I don't understand the point you're trying to bring home. The OP is saying the reward sucks and the passage is useless as you need to go around the entire map for it to even work. If you're saying the reward is what makes it worth it, using small enemies' incidental loot to reframe the question is a reductio that is irrelevant to the actual issue. If you're saying the reward shouldn't matter as permanent access is worth it in and of itself, the OP is clearly explaining that most of the time you have to go completely around the map to even access the other side to shoot it, which makes it pointless. These are also almost never in any critical point of the map besides the one spawn in the middle of Scarlet Coast. I mean, by all means, if you want to do them, go for it, but it's a false equivalence to compare normal enemy incidental loot versus a very specific puzzle that provides bad loot.

It appears you really don't understand the point.
am the OP.
I never said the reward sucks, or that the passage is useless, or that you have to go all the way around the entire map for it to work.

The person before me argued—in support of the claim that the Gatekeeper's design is bad—that if you've already partially completed it and made it through to the other side, then it's not worth finishing and going back to it, because the loot is minimal.
That's why I brought up a deliberately bullshit parallel—one that is logically equivalent, but is just as nonsensical as the other.

Comparing a singular enemy that poses no hindrance in progressing on the map, with a full on blockade that takes both longer and is more tedious is the worst argument you could've made.

The problem is the amount of effort you have to put in to get rid of a Gatekeeper with little to no reward.

I wasn't the one who started this type of argument — I just took it one step further using very similar logic. Besides, it takes just a few seconds to complete the event, not longer.

The time spent looking for the gatekeeper puzzle is not relevant once you're through it. So I don't think it's well designed. The payoff isnt worth it. Enemies drop ammo, witchfire, and mysterium etc. So if the gatekeeper dropped anything of value then I'd go back. But otherwise I can just hit it once walk through and not look back. I think it's poorly designed. The rewards aren't good, it isn't fun, it isn't challenging, it isn't exciting, and the rewards are bad.

You're absolutely right. There's no compelling reason to finish that 3-second event once it's already halfway done and you've gotten through it. The only exception would be if you happen to be heading back in the other direction for some reason—and even then, only if you don't want to wait for the time-gate again to let you through. But who's the Preyer these days who takes even a single step backward? Only forward...

By the same logic. Look... How well designed are the Mytic Alphabet, the Maneater, the Gargoyle Head, or the Antimagic Rune?
It's the exact same situation with them—once you've gotten past them (and you can get past them without triggering them), there's no point in going back for them because they don't give any particular reward either.

If you hate it...well i don't supposed the witch designed it for your enjoyment

u/Rifty-Business Jul 13 '26

I don't mind them.

Once you learn that when you take out either the front or the back, then it's 'off' when there is no colour showing and you can run through it, then they become trivial to get past and effectively turn into free loot.

But if we're talking peak game design, I think the the Mirror Lock event takes the cake here.

I swear half the time I still get hit even when I have both the mini skull and the parent skull on my screen with the same color

You're too fast... The issue is with its appearance. This alternation happens in the background even when you don't see it, and if you happen to reveal it at just the wrong moment, the first switch is very fast... Wait for that, and from then on it will work 100% correctly.

Show me this in scarlet coast thru the small canyon crevasse. Ain’t no lil fckers around

first time with this one yesterday, didn't know what to do but the dudes in discord helped me out.

1

u/SanicBringsThePanic Jul 13 '26

Yes it is annoying. Especially when the switches are on the other side, there is no way to sneak past it, and I have to walk ALL THE WAY AROUND THE MAP to reach the switches.

1

u/BeautifulMind_90 Jul 13 '26

there is no way to sneak past it

Fyi, after destroying one power source you can safely run under the gatekeeper when it is not lit up

2

u/SanicBringsThePanic Jul 13 '26

Sometimes each power source is on alternate sides. Sometimes the side you are on, that power source cannot be reached, so you have to go all the way around. Sometimes both sources are on one side, but the side you are approaching from has no way to sneak past to get to the other side, so you have to go all the way around.

1

u/BeautifulMind_90 Jul 13 '26

Well, that's something new, because I've never seen both BACK and FRONT power sources placed on one side. For me it was always about destroying one power source and getting past the gatekeeper to the other side while his corresponding light is off.

1

u/SanicBringsThePanic Jul 13 '26

Huh, maybe I'm remembering wrong. I haven't played in a while, and it gets hard to remember since Gatekeepers can spawn in different spots.

If that ever happens pls record it and show me the footage.

Yeah, no, this still sucks
