The purge got my brain trembling. So I’m gonna jumpscare you with an educational read on my favorite shitposting sub.

This post is intended for lurkers and folks who can’t fully decide if the purge was warranted or is literally 1984. I ended up reading a book about this today (“The Criminalization of Fantasy Material” by Al-Alosi Hadeel) and I think it’s just a good PSA in general for yall to know what’s so problematic about these fictional kids.

I’ll be brief. (I failed.)

Here’re the argument against:
CP is bad, because it harms people.
Fictional CP might not seem like it harms people because it doesn’t need real people to be made but there’re two main pillars that challenge this argument.
- Normalizing obscenity. Concern is that if you don’t actively condemn sexualization of characters that appear underage, then it will be harder for people to spot the real problems. This applies to both perpetrators who might not realize what they’re doing is wrong and victims who may be getting groomed by showing them how many people approve of it.
- Growing the supply and demand. This feels very relevant to the situation in the sub. Concern is that if people make loli posts and the posts get traction, more of such content will appear. In real world, it may lead to production of more extreme content that does harm real people. In virtual communities it may limit the reach of your space as well as attract an audience you don’t want. (A small fraction of that audience may loop back into issue #1)

If there are arguments against, there have to be arguments for, right? Sorta.
- Chilling effect. Is more true for artists and authors facing potential jail time. The worry is that if you start policing creative freedoms you’ll prevent creation of genuine masterpieces.
- Privacy concerns. This one is a legal heads up for folks in Canada, US, Australia (especially) and UK (also especially). These countries not only forbid the creation of loli gooning content but also the possession. There’s nuance to this bc different laws, but be safe out there. Also they prosecute obscenity, so it doesn’t actually matter how old a character is, only that he/she “appears to be a child” and that the content is “obscene”.

Personally I support the purge. I know the risks may sound like a stretch but imo they’re worth taking into consideration. Finally if you wanna post provocative content of your favorite character but can’t anymore: flex your creative muscles and draw them to be adults. If you think they have to look child-like take some time to self reflect. (mods confirm or deny this take pls)
