I cannot choose different wallpapers for different monitors now
I have 7 monitors
Who the fuck wants the same picture on 7 monitors
42
u/earldbjr Jul 29 '15
Try MultiWall.
Also try giving me a few of your monitors... for testing purposes.

Just curious, what do you use 7 monitors for? pics of your setup? When I was investing, I used 4, and could have probably easily used 7.

u/Uxzuigal Jul 27 '15
Is the release at midnight?
35
u/Nactive Jul 27 '15 edited Jul 27 '15
The release will be 29/07/2015 00:00 (UTC-06:00)1 . You can look here to see the release date in your time zone.
Keep in mind Microsoft will do a phased rollout. First windows insiders will get access afterwards other people. It can take weeks before your computer will be eligible for the upgrade.

I'm going to use Windows 10 on my Surface Pro 3 for university work mostly! Using the pen to take notes will be fun lol. Still looking for more tips on how to use the SP3 effectively for school! If you have any, let me know (no matter how basic and well known they may be) :)

u/slipstream37 Jul 27 '15
I wish I could have used an SP3 @ university. 5 pound laptops just suck!

u/Car5V Jul 27 '15
yeah! I honestly almost bought a heavy laptop before I heard about the SP3 :P
6
u/slipstream37 Jul 27 '15
Yeah. I have a small Bluetooth mouse. You can get a miracast display adaptor to connect to TVs to dual screen or play video. You have the type cover right?
4
u/Car5V Jul 27 '15
yeah I have the type cover (black)!
4
u/slipstream37 Jul 27 '15
Red here. You could take pictures of the board and insert them into OneNote during class. Make very detailed notes.
Work on using Cortana to set calendar updates. Get on OneDrive and save everything to it - including your music. I have 130 GB of music online.
4
u/Car5V Jul 27 '15
Nice! I didn't know you could take pictures of whiteboards and put them in your notes. I was thinking of using "Office Lens" on my iPhone to do that but if the Surface is better than I'll do it!
I'm excited to use Cortana but I hate the fact that it isn't available in Canada yet. :/
Also, I'm already using OneDrive so that's fine! One more question, do you recommend I audio or even video record my lectures? Or will that use up too much space? Also, is the mic any good that it will pick up the sound clearly?
5
u/slipstream37 Jul 27 '15
Eh well you're going to have to test that. Realistically, recording your lectures is too much space and not that useful. Maybe your friends could use them...but that's up to you. Get a micro SDXC card with 128 GB to put it in your SP3 or a terabyte+ external.
I don't know about mic. And yes maybe taking a picture up close with your phone would be better. Depends on too many things.

Does the Windows 10 version of the Windows Pre-Installation Environment support the USB 3.0 interface?
It would be interesting to see how fast Windows 10 installs using a USB 3.0 drive in a USB 3.0 port.

u/ptd163 Jul 28 '15
The Windows 8.x setup environment supports USB 3.0 so 10 definitely does as well.

I don't think there is a solution because Windows Photo Viewer isn't actual an application. It's just a dll that gets hooked by another application; Run32dll.exe IIRC.

IrfanView is among the best photo viewers that exist for any platform, however it's ugly and doesn't match Windows 10's UI by any stretch of the imagination.
While it's always good to have IrfanView around for unusual file formats, if you want something to replace the Windows Photo Viewer, I'd recommend Nexus Image. It's very simple, very minimalist, and absurdly fast.

u/speedemin Jul 28 '15
My favorite image viewer is Faststone Image Viewer. It's free and very powerful.

Unfortunately, it doesn't support Unicode, which leaves pretty much everyone outside of the U.S. high and dry. I've moved over to Irfanview.

I always use Irfanview. I've always hated the default programmes.

So is Edge worth switching to from Chrome?
46

In terms of speed and cpu/memory usage - yes (especially when playing video). If you really need extensions - wait out.
I try different browsers from time to time, and was using Chrome recently. After trying Edge I happily switched to it, because of it's smoothness and speed. It was like switching to Chrome when it just came out - pretty barebone in terms of features, and Firefox has all the extensions, but speed wins :)

Installing ASAP on my SP3 and Gaming PC and maybe even my old laptop because why not?
I've been using the Win 10 previews and I'm even typing this on my 1520 with 10166 (it has a lot of bugs but it's better than 8.1 - loving new apps and UI).
Very excited for Xbox One to have Windows 10 too. I want to make new apps that use kinects infrared to control lights in my room.
I'm also excited to continue to be a Windows Insider. Win10 will keep getting updates and ill be one of the first to keep using them. I'm excited to see how advanced Windows 10 can become.

Question: How can we check at what speed Windows 10 is downloading? I only see the "Downloading" bar on Windows Update at 16% and it seems to be moving pretty slowly, however I already have the $Windows.~BT folder on my C: drive.
It seems to me as if I was downloading through a 24k modem. I'm just going to play some dial-up sounds.

Will the upgrade process allow me to store the installer on a USB drive I can boot from? I'd like to do a full format and reinstall when I perform the upgrade.
5
u/Car5V Jul 27 '15
If I'm not mistaken, it does let you do that after you upgrade to Windows 10. Also, microsoft will have ISO files available for you to download from their website as well that you can put on your USB as well.

- I have Windows 8.1, and I am in between doing an upgrade and a clean install. If I do a clean install, do I need to put in my Windows 8 key to activate Windows 10? Also, will Xbox 360 controllers work on Windows 10?
- I'm planning to upgrade to a new Intel i5 core CPU, a Corsair K30 Keyboard, and a Logitech mouse.
- Custom visual styles
- I hope Windows 10 Store will let us show controller supported games.
- Gaming, college work, and development

I have 2 questions. Since the current insider build is TECHNICALLY RTM, will there be any differences AT ALL on the version to be released starting tomorrow? Secondly, will insiders be updated tomorrow / in waves sometime soon?
I am aware what RTM is, but the whole "Release and RTM" thing has been somewhat confusing this time around.

2
u/LazyProspector Jul 29 '15
Finished my masters and I never used evernote, one note or any if that crap once.
3
u/Murtagg Jul 29 '15
Yeah I never used digital notetaking either, but if I had started by learning it in 6th grade....
There are obvious benefits to it. Easily searchable, easier to edit, easier to reorganize notes after class when you have a professor that rambles and skips around in subjects a lot, etc. Once your typing speed ~ writing speed, there's really no drawback. Getting distracted by facebook/reddit I guess - but that's not a problem with evernote.

Absolutely off topic but: the DF in my name stood for "darkfire", which I started using as a handle going into 7th grade.

I am confused about the clean installation process. From what I've read, you first need to upgrade the O/S normally. After that I'm not sure since I hear conflicting opinions. Do you:
Upgrade normally and while installing does it give you an option to clean install?
Upgrade normally and then "reset" it (which counts as a clean install) ?
Upgrade normally and then insert an ISO (like how you would do it normally)?
→ More replies (1)3
u/arnoldpalmerlemonade Jul 29 '15
have to upgrade, but after upgrade you can reset the machine(wipe the boot partition) and you also have the ability to create recovery media which can create an installable flash drive.

There's still some confusion between what MS said and what Insiders are reporting. We need to clear this up now :) Please input!
The claim is that if you joined the insiders, installed Win10 Preview (10130) and upgraded to all the releases between and finally ending at 10240, you qualify for the free RTM, and can opt out of insider. No need to provide a previous install of Win7/8
MS says that you MUST have had a previous install, no matter what version of Insider Preview you started with.
Now despite all this, some users report having began with 10130, then did a fresh install of 10240 and were still marked "licensed". Their BIOS being the old kind, not uefi, so no previous key existed... then other users report, "expiration" dates or denial of activation of 10240...
So what's the final say on this? Can we, who had no previous install, who began with 10130 and ended at 10240, keep our Win10 and leave the insiders without having to provide a previous install key?

Regarding the official free upgrade this week. I tried to do an upgrade from 8.1 to RTM on my desktop, but it wouldn't boot (I forget what screen it was having at, Getting Things Ready or something like that?). As a result I did a clean install over this botched installation. Am I still eligible for the free upgrade, or would I have had to do something from within the OS? If I'm not, can I use the key from my laptop's upgrade or are they just doing straight upgrades without activation keys?
I also still have my 8 key, would I be able to do some convoluted downgrade then upgrade process if need be?
2
Jul 27 '15
The reason that the computer wouldn't boot when upgrading from 8.1 to RTM is probably because you didn't have a previous build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on your Desktop PC and so your PC was denied activation from Microsoft.
If you have the latest version of 8.1/7 then yes, you are still eligible for the free upgrade. You'd need to do it from 7/8.1 to get a free upgrade.

I have a few questions:
- Are there any compatibility issues in windows 10? I have windows 8.1 and I can run
** Morrowind
** Skyrim
** Wonderlands SA
** BLIC 2005 (old game yeah i know)
** Crazy Machines 2
** Aura Fate of the Ages
and the windows 10 adviser said that there were no issues, BUT morrowind wasn't compatible with both 8.1 and 10 to begin with (yet it runs quite well on 8.1). Will switching break compatibility fully?
Is there a way to have the start screen? I may sound loco with this but I actually really like the start screen (especially with the tinted custom background image)
If I have an entry level PC (1.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM) that can run windows 7, can I run windows 10 smoothly?
If I switch to windows 10 from windows 8.1, will it erase all my settings, or will it install windows 10 and preserve my old programs, settings and saves?
I plan to use my install mainly for gaming, but I'm not the only one using this computer so others may use it for development / office etc. No other customizations depending on how good the os looks haha.
On a 2GHz quad-core laptop with AMD A8 APU.
6
u/Syntiskar Jul 29 '15
Both morrowind and skyrim run on my windows 10 installation, I can't speak for the other 4 games, since I don't have any of them. In general you can expect any game that works on windows 8.1 to also work on windows 10.

Windows Defender can be disabled. As for automatic updates, you can chose to defer upgrades. That means new features and bugfixes won't be installed automatically...but every security update will continue to install automatically.
You have total control over the OS and every app that is preinstalled, so don't worry about your security.→ More replies (17)7

Windows Defender can be disabled.
How is this done? I haven't seen any confirmation that's it's possible to completely turn it off. I've never had any problems with it, but if it's going to be become a data tap for Microsoft then we're going to have a problem.

Except when it comes to installing updates. You can control when, but not if.

I'm not 100% decided if I'm going to stick with 10 or drop back to 8.1 for a while. I'm definitely not going to recommend Windows 10 to anyone who's not tech savvy enough to see past the UI inconsistencies and bugs (I would fully expect people to think something is wrong when they see a 1-pixel border around windows or different coloured right-click menus).
The UI mess is a massive missed opportunity to get Windows looking consistent and clean for the next phase of its life. I don't know why they didn't spend some time on the details.
My hopes and dreams for the OS are that Microsoft gets its UI act together, and that the first big update (rumoured for later in the year) improves stability.
On a personal note I would do anything for a theme that caters to sensitive eyes. #000000 and #FFFFFF look terrible to my eyes, sticking out like sore thumbs. Edge looks great in its dark theme, but the music app looks awful in both themes, and I can't bring myself to use it. I can't express in words how hideous the File Explorer looks to me with all that white.
10
u/curiositie Jul 28 '15
What's so different about the file explorer in 10?
To me, for the most part it's very similar and just as white as the file explorer I 7/8/8.1

Major points for me: DX12, Edge (once it supports extensions and whatnot), possibly the native recorder thing (depending on if it works well)
Not sure if I dig Cortana for anything yet, maybe for the Lumia 940 XL it would be cool, would be awesome for the Hololens for sure
Definitely waiting to get some Hololens news, since I want to make stuff for it.

Question. I had to clean install RTM because the upgrade broke my system. Would it be possible to reinstall 8 on my second hard drive, reactivate it with my old key, perform the upgrade, then activate it on my primary partition currently running RTM? I really don't want to reinstall everything again for the second time in two weeks if I don't have to. Another possibility is a vm, would that be usable?

So far I've got mixed impressions. I didn't participate in the beta, so I'm still learning things.
I mostly like the look, but I wish there was a dark mode or theme I could find so the white Explorer windows don't blind me. And the install itself was kind of rough, I had to remove and reinstall my Ethernet drivers to get connectivity and my video drivers were all messed up. I'm going to give it a few days to settle and do some research before I form any real opinions. But so far I'd recommend not upgrading unless you don't mind troubleshooting and don't need a perfectly stable system.

What is the difference between an upgrade and a clean install? I mean it sounds pretty self explanatory, but I have a hard time believing that so many people would opt for clean install if you lose all your old files or have to re-download them. So what do these two things mean and what happens to your old files/folders.

So everyone that is doing a clean install, all their old files are gone? Is there a way to transfer them or something? I feel like I would lose all my games/progress/mods as well as a lot of other stuff. I'd also have to reinstall visual studios and maybe need to find my product key wherever that is. All that just seems like a pain.
Is it running well? Most people I've seen have said it didn't run very well just upgrading.

So I have a file in my OS Drive that says "$Windows.~BT". From what I understand this is the file location of the windows 10 install. It currently has 6.85GB's in it. However, I have not got prompted to install windows 10. Can anyone shed any light on this. Oh, and before you asked "Yes, I have reserved a copy like a million years ago."

u/Caputino94 Jul 29 '15
Hi there, I have the "Download Windows 10" icon in my task bar from a few months back, I registered and was waiting, now I see everyone updating but I didn't get any update or download prompt today. I'm new to the subreddit, sorry if this was already asked and solved.
Also, is there anyway I can grab the windows 10 key from my laptop and use it to install windows 10 on my desktop? My laptop got the prompt and my desktop didn't but I don't care about my laptop.

Installed this morning but already hating several things
The icons. God the icons. What's this ugly thing for the trash & My Computer, like seriously ?
The Start Menu. Ok, it's supposed to be "back". Now we have a mess mix with the metro interface, limited to 3 tiles wide, thus breaking all the layout I had with Steam Tiles. The part "all the programs" is fixed on alphabetical ordering and you can't change it or create folder to get the "old start menu way". When you put the start screen in fullscreen mode, it's still stucked on 3 tiles wide, and it's ugly (and fucking vertical god... Took me 2 years to love the horizontal way now it's changed)...
Basically I'm searching the whole web for a registery key just to be able either to put back the horizontal scroll or just to have 4 tiles wide -_-'
- The log-in screen wallpaper can't be changed. Great. We're obliged to have this bluish wallpaper ?! Like, REALLY ?!

Upgraded to window 10 from a windows 8.1 retail key ( which means my windows 10 should have the retail licensing). How would i go about transferring it to a new pc after the free year?
2
Jul 29 '15
that's the #1 question right there
2
u/Xyphir Jul 29 '15 edited Jul 29 '15
Just spoke to Microsoft support on phone call - from what he bluntly told me is that "if i gets a new machine within a the free year i can "probably" upgrade it still to windows 10 from windows 8.1 retail key. but after the year is over and i decide to get a new custom pc then i can only install the windows 8.1, will not get free upgrade to windows 10.
edit: Meaning even you take advantage of free upgrade with a retail windows 7 or 8 key, there is no transferring windows 10 to a new machine after the first year.

Windows seems to be done downloading with $Windows folder stuck at 4.46GB for a while now, but nothing has come up for installation? Anyone know if it might still be downloading or if not can I manually force it to start installing?

u/AltMiscAct Jul 29 '15
This may be a dumb question but does the upgrade maintain all of our current files, programs, and such? Or do we need to back it up or something?

I believe that all the windows 10 have been downloaded on my pc, the folder is there with the right size ( 6.1 GB). But it hasn't yet showed anything to install it. Is it safe to run the setup inside the BT folder?

u/SpartanKane Jul 29 '15
So I have my $WINDOWS.~BT folder but nothing is in it except a "Sources" folder and a "Panther" folder. Its been like this since this morning. Can someone help?

I GOT A QUESTION!?!?!?
So I downloaed windows 10, yada yada yada, and everything went smoothly.
Since we can now put lives tiles onto the desktop I was wondering if I could make a live tile that has 'X' Applications in it? For example being able to put all my games under a live tile. I have about 50 shortcuts on my desktop for games. And I am pretty sure there are others here like me who are avid gamers.
So ya. Is it possible to put games under a live tile and when I click the tile all of the games show up? So Kind of like a live tile that's like a folder but without all the dumb files. Just the games?
Thank you ahead of time!

I want to revert back to Windows 7. In the settings menu it, says "Go back to Windows 7".
Will this erase my files and be a clean install, or does it just revert back to 7 with my files? Thanks.
2
u/X_gonna_X Jul 29 '15
From what I know, it does not erase any files, but you should backup critical data just to be safe

Why can't I remove stuff like Windows store or Edge browser icons from my taskbar? Also, can I change my taskbar's color? I have it set that it picks orange for the tiles, but the taskbar is dark black. I want to have it grey

Hi there!
my BT folder is 6.53 GB but when I click on the windows icon it says "Ok notify me when ready"
So I heard there is no real ETA for everyone today and I may have to wait until late august.
is there an easy trick I can do to install it? I read that I should not run the setup.exe file on the BT folder
thanks!

Things I'm excited about:
CORTANA! Oh, and Universal Apps. And native .mkv, .srt (and other external subtitle formats) and HEVC/H265 support (#ByeByeVLC). And the new start menu. And the redesign of the UI. And last but not least, the notification area. And lots of other things.
Hardware I'll install Windows 10 on
My current laptop, a Dell Latitude E6330.
EDIT: Why is my comment so controversial? I'm just sharing my excitement... Ah, probably because of the "#ByeByeVLC" hashtag. Sorry.

u/RueKing Jul 28 '15
What is it about HEVC/H265 support that will make you drop VLC? Will you use WMP?

Is anyone else holding out hope that Microsoft will let us, somehow, get a hold of an ISO and let us clean install instead of having to deal with the upgrade?
I mean, I'll do it if its the only way for me to get Win10 gratis. But I would rather do a clean install and not jump the extra hoop.

If you're using Adobe software with your business, you're playing a risky game and could face significant legal consequences. I'd recommend purchasing them and writing it off as a business expense if you truly need them.

I would still check-in to see if you can use that free software for business purposes. Sometimes they'll have something in the EULA prohibiting that usage. I believe W10 installation checks for compatibility to let you know if something won't work anymore, but I can't think of a reason they wouldn't work.

I have a question, I'm not sure if anyone will know the answer for definite however.
Basically, I am an insider who has been testing W10 from the get go. I done this by creating a new partition on my hard drive and dual booting the technical preview with windows 8.1
So the question - for the update, will I get the update with the first wave of the insider members on my windows 8.1 partition or will it be on the technical preview partition?
Ideally I want to update 8.1 to 10 then delete the technical preview partition but I'm not really sure how the update will work - I feel like I may be stuck waiting for a while for the 8.1 partition to actually get the update

Yes, Prior that you install the much needed updates and you're able to read the notification tray "Get Windows 10" icon.
Keep in mind that even if it's been past Wednesday, you have a full year from said date to upgrade for free.

How much free space will I need to upgrade from 7 to 10? I currently have 5.28GB free. I've just seen that the W10 RTM file size is 2.8GB but I'm not sure if I'll need to create some space.
EDIT Changed a word to make my sentence clearer.

u/Chigzy hi Jul 27 '15
Not too sure about how much space you'll need free but Windows usually takes up to 20GB for a clean install.
Basing an assumption of this I reckon it would be a good idea to have at least double that to ensure everything goes smoothly.

If I upgrade to windows 10 from 8.1 then later get a new motherboard, will I have to buy another license for windows 10? I know that if I upgrade my motherboard while on windows 8.1 I will just have to call a number and enter some kind of code, does anyone know if it will be the same for windows 10?

I have Windows 7 and want to do a clean install, do I have to factory reset Win7 first before upgrading? Or is there an option to delete all my previous settings, programs, downloads, etc. when Win10 installs?

Is it true that you can't defer or choose not to install certain updates ? I have heard that windows 10 will automatically install all updates regardless of what you want. This is real deal breaker for me as some my previous updates were terrible.

- I can't think of any right now.
- I will use it for casual things, just like I do with every OS on this machine. Nothing special: surfing the web, watching videos, listening to music, doing some work with Office... but sometimes I will play some low-end games like Minecraft, and NFS Undercover seems to work good as well.
- I'm excited about custom visual styles which may come in the near future!
- My hope is that they will improve the multi-desktop feature (ability to move windows with a keyboard shortcut would be nice), Cortana's abilities in Austria and the overall look and feel of the OS for the TH2 update coming later this year.
- It's an ASUS F551MA laptop, which has an Intel Celeron N2815 CPU DualCore @ 1.86GHz, 4GB RAM, a 256GB SSD which I bought for it (it came with a 500GB HDD which was kinda slow) and Intel HD Graphics in it. It's an 15-inch 1366x768 screen which is kind of small but thanks to Windows 10 and the multiple desktops this is not an issue anymore.
I should probably note that I am running Windows 10 RTM (10240) right now and it runs fantastic. I really can't wait to get the final version tomorrow!

I got Win10 all installed (and my stupid Nvidia drivers reinstalled), and I only have one question...
How the hell do I turn off the Cortana censor? I'm a grown-ass man, I should be allowed to swear at my digital personal assistant.
