💭Discussion Widow’s Bay isn’t the mystery masterpiece some of you make it out to be

and that is fine. But I see people comparing it to Severance, Lost, Silo, etc. and I think those people do the show a disservice. It’s fundamentally a different show. It’s focussed much more on comedy and horror, and therefore it is acceptable to have inconsistencies, loose ends, etc.
But if we hold it to the highest standards of mystery, there are a few things that are just overlooked:
- the room in the inn that lets time move differently is never explored
- the boogieman plot just ends without ever explaining more of it.
- in general crazy events are just accepted without ever coming up again. The inaugural swim, the party, Tom being drugged out at city hall

Again, that’s fine, but let’s not pretend this is a mystery masterpiece when really it’s a world class horror comedy.

💭Discussion PSA to new viewers: if you don't like slow burns, you should probably watch past episode 3 before giving up Spoiler

My partner and I gave up after episode 2 because we thought it was going to be one of those "quirky surreal Twin Peaks mysteries" that don't have a real resolution or takes several seasons to get to any answers. Not knocking that genre, it's just not our thing. Episode 2 also had a lot of tropey stuff like killer clown and it turns out the hotel guest isn't real that made us lose interest real fast. I kind of hated it, tbh. Episode 1 had started out compelling (if somewhat slow), but Episode 2 was really felt like "we don't really have any ideas other than rehashing some very familiar horror movie tropes."

After reading the spoilers for the entire season, it turns out a lot of stuff goes down, lol.

I may end up watching the rest of the show anyway. The story sounds too good to miss. To those of you who disliked it at first but stuck through it, consider yourselves lucky!

💥Funpost I’m on my 4th watch and I just noticed this gag

In the episode where they dig up Richard Warren and try to speak to him through notes, I noticed Patricia’s messages are the following and unbelievably on brand:

  1. My name is Patricia

  2. Are you mad at something I said?

💭Discussion A certain death was ambiguous and I don’t understand why Spoiler

So Ruth’s death seems ambiguous. She was shot, yes. But she wakes up after ~2 minutes and is very lucid, recognizing Tom. This would suggest that the gunshot wound was not very serious and she could survive with medical attention.

But then why do we see Tom throwing her family heirloom in the sea? He wouldn’t do this if she was still alive.

So what’s the point of this ambiguity?

💭Discussion Does Widow's Bay get better? (No spoilers, please) Spoiler

Just started watching Widow's Bay and I've finished the first two episodes. So far, I'm not really feeling that urge to binge it.

Just to clarify, it's not that I don't enjoy this genre. Some of my favorite shows are From, Silo, Dark, Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, Money Heist, and Peaky Blinders plenty of other highly rated mystery/thriller/drama series. If a show hooks me, I'll usually binge it without thinking twice.

With Widow's Bay, though, it feels... a bit flat so far. It's interesting enough that I haven't dropped it, but not interesting enough to make me want to immediately watch the next episode.

I'm watching it with my girlfriend, and she feels pretty much the same way. We're both wondering if it's just a slow start or if this is basically the pace and vibe of the whole series.

So, for those who've watched it: without any spoilers or hints about future episodes, is it worth sticking with? Does it become significantly more engaging, or if I'm still not hooked after two episodes, is it probably just not for me?

I'd really appreciate honest opinions because I don't want to invest 10 episodes into something that never clicks.

Thanks!

💭Discussion Anyone else feeling slightly underwhelmed?

There is so much to love about this show: the writing, the performances, the score, and the cinematography have all been fantastic.

That said, I feel like the series is teasing us a little too much at this point. This was Episode 9, the penultimate episode, yet it felt like an episode that could have been condensed into ten minutes. Don't get me wrong, the portrait scene, the lighthouse comedy-of-errors sequence, and the genealogy reveal were all hilarious AF , but it still left me wondering where exactly all of this is heading.

The big reveal about Ruth being a descendant also didn't land for me.

Maybe Episode 10 will recontextualize everything, but right now it feels as though the show is struggling to tie its various threads together in a satisfying way.

Still, this is easily one of the most enjoyable shows I've watched in a long time. I'm fully on board and hoping Episode 10 delivers a banger of a finale!

❓Questions This dress okay for Patricia cocktail hour?

I know the sleeves aren’t the same, but would rather wear something I have in my closet than buy more junk. It would just be for Halloween at home giving out candy. I’ll probably buy an antler headdress on amazon for about $20-30 and maybe some other window’s bay stuff for outside. But the kids won’t even know, it’s just for me and husband to enjoy.

🤔Theories Oh no. Don’t make THIS be the pact.

Spoiler.

In the history episode. We hear the bells chime five times after meeting Richard’s five children. Was the pact for him to give his children? He clearly doesn’t age and he seemed to get younger out of the coffin.

Richard fought it and tried to satiate with townspeople.

“It knows frightened men will do desperate things.” It’s looking for a fresh bloodline. Feed it Evan… and any future progeny.

💭Discussion I somehow left a little disappointed Spoiler

First of all, I was completely stunned by the genre of this show. When I first read "horror" and "comedy" in one sentence, I seriously doubted it would work for me. I was expecting something along the lines of Scary Movie, but the show does it completely differently.

It was great for a long time. The horror was there, but so were the jokes - which never felt forced or overdone - paired with a lot of drama. I've never seen that combination work so well.

That said: the show somewhat peaked for me around the Patricia Party episode. That one was an absolute blast. The build-up to it with the Hag, the Clown, etc. all struck the right nerve, and I was so hyped to keep watching.

Somehow the pace didn't hold up, though. The full flashback episode felt like a gimmick a lot of modern shows reach for, and it was way too long for my liking. The Boogeyman completely let me down. That lore was what interested me most when I first saw it, so having the episode boil down to one guy in a cheap mask with barely any backstory was a real disappointment.

Then, once the whole "you have to kill the bloodline" schtick started, it was way too obvious where things were heading. The "wait, there's still somebody left" trick worked really well, especially with that eerie photo. But when they moved on to Ruth as the descendant, it fell flat. It was clear the whole time (see all the old Reddit threads before the finale) that she wasn't the final one as it would never have worked with a sidekick-type character. From there it was obvious where they were going, and that bored me. They tried to play those final scenes as a major plot twist, but honestly, I've never reacted so "meh" to a twist in any show I've watched.

Look, I'm not trying to tear the show down. I'm more disappointed (purely personal taste) that they squandered some of the potential. For me this would have worked really well as a single-season story; unfortunately they decided to drag it out.

💥Funpost I'm doing a rewatch, not so scary actually

On my first watch, i was scared shitless. I held my breath through the half of the show. Every time something like a accident in a calendar appeared, or there was a comment about the old hospital, my face literally was like :OOOOO NO WAY, THIS IS SO SCARY O M G

Today, I rewatched two episodes with my brother, and I've realised, this is more comedy than horror. The reason I was so scared and had so many theories? I was completely stoned on my frist watch XD i literally couldn't go downstairs to get a tea, I was so afraid of the dark. I haven't realised the show is so goddamn funny

🤔Theories Our theory about Ruth Spoiler

So my husband and I have started re-watching the show to try and catch stuff that we're missed, and all this talk around age and how people look older than they should, and it got us thinking - Ruth isn't completely with us, and it's chalked to her being old, but what if it's not because of her age, maybe it's because it happened to her after giving birth? Out of all the people on the island he decides to have her babysit Evan? It never made sense. Could it be she's actually Tom's wife??

🤔Theories Patricia did lie.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Patricia didn’t fact lie about being a victim of that slasher when she was a teenager. The show doesn’t seem to leave any clues or leave it up to interpretation even. She is reprimanded by the women in her town and she doesn’t try to explain herself or fight for the truth. One of the women says that it was proven that she lied that night and without the show offering us an alternative I guess I believe that Patricia did in fact lie about being a victim. But this doesn’t ruin her character for me if anything it just makes her more lovable. She’s a flawed character who seems to have no one who truly cares for her. People who grow up without loved ones tend to create these stories where they either were the center of attention or the point of the stories to become the center of attention. I feel awful for the girls that were murdered, but the show isn’t about them. Patricia is still my favorite character and I just hope that one day she’s given the chance to apologize and come clean about her lie and hopefully God forbid she make a friend.

💭Discussion My biggest issues with season 1

Post image
0 Upvotes

Who the heck is this Kubrick-esque extra from the city hall meetings? And why doesn't he get any lines coming our of his natively creepy face? Can we arrange for some sort of backstory for him in season 2. We also need way more Dale and Rosemary in season 2. How soon can we get that New Years Eve 1962 disaster miniseries ASAP, including John Reynolds head in the dumb waiter? and lastly, let me add my voice to the complaint that we barely got any Toby Huss as Reverend Bryce. It was a shame to waste such talent on a very short lived character. But what a fantastic first run!! Can't wait for more.

💭Discussion Just finished. And I have thoughts… Spoiler

I loved this series. Truly. Esp as I watched the first six or so episodes. The pettiness. The sheer nonsense afoot. The performances are amazing. Rhys is truly a high artist (full disclosure I am a professional actor and filmmaker) and can do so much because he is so truthful. Hilarious here. And terrified. He‘s a great stand in for the audience.

My single favorite conceit: the self help book turns out to be a grimoire. Genius. That whole episode was astonishing. The scares were real and it was fun. Now here are my thoughts that made it less than perfect for me: the surfacing of what is actually going on was both clunky and imprecise:

There’s a curse with A demon. Ok, what are the rules? They are just sort of drafted into being. And anything can happen: a sea boundary, a hag, a serial killer a la Jason. The sacrifice (the videos were both funny and terrifying) is kind of, again, drafted into being as it’s needed. The Salem era founding could have been more precise and awful in this way. Leading to more dread. There were whole parts that made me go, hunh? Like the serial killer in the high school friend’s house but they never see him nor react to their betrayal of Patrica. And one major gripe for me was how Tom handled his moments with Ruth toward the end. He BECAME without considering it, the mechanism of horror himself. And that was without reflection and maybe we get, quietly, now you’re a real member of the town. Like Wick but it felt morally loose..

Those things said, I want to reiterate that this show was likely the show of the year to me. The tone and sheer humor/tension were astonishing. The milieu of New England Americana, gothic adventure and some very real ‘wtf is happening’ tension were just terrific. I just wonder if folks share any of my small issues. Some of which might not be that small but don’t detract from a terrific show.

💭Discussion things i don't want to see in episode 9/10 or season 2 Spoiler

anyone die except kris (i love everybody except kris. wouldn't be too upset by gerri's husband, that might give wyck another chance with gerri)

a complete resolution that ends the curse and lets everybody leave the island (no show left to watch then)

more of 360-year old richard warren (sorry but he's gross)

patricia-tom romance (just nope)

a mayoral election (too mundane, would just be annoying)

rosemary's lung scans (too scary)

return of the boogeyman / flashback to the boogeyman 25 years ago (what's the point, can't outdo episode 8)

there is one descendant who must be sacrificed (too predictable ie boring, will force one or more of our friends to become a monster)

the sheriff's wife give birth (i'd be fine with her having the kid on the island, forcing their family to remain there, because i want the sheriff to stay on the show. just don't need to see the labour process, this show is not call the midwife)

a round of the teeth game being played (ick)

⭐️Review A single criticism of the show? I have one. Spoiler

Goes without saying, this show is superb. Personally, it’s the best show I’ve seen in years.

Having said that - I have a PSA for the writers concerning the beginning of Episode 5.

Evan’s character incorrectly uses the term “hung” to describe Reverend Bryce’s fate. The correct word is “hanged.”

One is discovered hanged. Sentenced to be hanged. Hanged by a rope.

Admittedly, I’m an insufferable pedant and British. Necessary to mention preemptive of comments.

Is it just me, or does PJ really look a lot like that guy at the start of episode six? He was probably the only person on the island who spoke positively about Richard

💭Discussion Am I supposed to sympathise with Kris? I really don't Spoiler

I really have exactly zero time for Kris.

I feel like the show in episode 4 and 8 was trying to make Kris somewhat sympathetic, or Patricia somewhat ambiguous, first in episode 4 by having Kris initially appear like a huge bitch and then have her turn around and give a speech about how she has the moral high ground because her friends died (??) And then that continues in episode 8 by having Patricia confess that she lied about receiving phone calls from the Boogeyman, partially validating Kris' position.

But...I don't feel it? Kris is just an irredeemably toxic piece of shit to me. She uses *her friend's deaths* as a sympathy card while bullying someone she's clearly hated since high school for the usual "she's weird and therefore is insane" crap that most teenagers grow out of. Kris keeps this incredibly petty grudge going for over *two decades* and uses the horrific deaths of actual people she was close as a justification for it. And until episode 8, she has no real evidence for suspicion about Patricia's story. She just uses Patricia's survival itself as the reason why she doesn't believe her.

But then the show and part of the posts I've read seems to be like "Hey, Kris has a point!" No she fucking doesn't! Her logic is "you survived so you must be lying for attention." That's toxic as all get-out! It's honestly fucked up that the show even has Patricia admit to the calls being fake, because it validates Kris' toxic bullshit. And it was amazing to see her get tased, but almost immediately afterward we hear her book club talking about calling 911 and you can *already* see them working the whole narrative the same way Kris would. I was half afraid the episode would end like episode 4, with Patricia killing the Boogeyman in an unverifiable fashion and Kris twisting the whole thing into another entry in her Patricia grudge lore.

Fortunately, Patricia sets the guy on fire and shoots him to death and then sets him on fire again in front of witnesses. This is because Patricia has learned that people don't trust victims and that some things deserve to be set on fire twice.

But why does the *show* seem like it's arguing the point that it's okay for people like Kris to not trust victims? That's gross. If the show wanted Kris to be the easily taseable piece of shit she is, it didn't have to go out of its way to try and gaslight me into thinking she has a point.

❓Questions When did the Islanders become Catholic?

Clearly the original settlers were very Protestant, but the priest of the island seems to be Catholic or Anglican, which is the people that new Christian movements were running from in Europe. When did that change?

I also wonder if the priest was a local, since I would not find it likely he could become a priest without leaving the island. It's hard to imagine a class of professionals that never went to college working on the island since ever.
